Roaring20JournalFNL_SGL:6.9 Golf Journal 10/15/08 12:29 PM Page 16 16 The Heckscher Museum of Art FROM THE CHAIR Dear Friends, Welcome to this year’s Heckscher Museum of Art Gala, celebrating the Roaring 20’s, the decade that marked the creation of our wonderful Museum. For over 87 years, The Heckscher has depended on the community’s generosity, and with this assistance, we have grown by leaps and bounds into the acclaimed Museum we are today. The theme of the Roaring 20’s is symbolic of returning to our roots with the restoration of our beautiful building being completed this year, and reminds us of our focus on continued success in the future. I know you all join with me in congratulating our honorees April Gornik and Christopher Mitchell. Both of these extraordinary individuals, together with their families, have been true examples of leadership and philanthropy in our communities. We are grateful to call them friends of The Heckscher and recognize their achievements tonight. I would also like to thank Judith Streiter, our Gala Chair, for her vision and leadership in making this evening so spectacular. Her hard work, along with that of the committee and the dedicated staff at the Museum, has made this event one to remember. Thanks to the support provided by generous individuals and businesses, we continue to fulfill our mission of engaging the people of Long Island through stimulating and inspiring programs of exhibitions and education offerings dedicated to a full understanding of the visual arts. We have elegantly restored galleries, a new website, a new logo, a new newsletter, and an exciting array of new exhibitions and educational programs. The response has been enthusiastic from both the critics and our visitors. Our membership roles are growing, and we are creating new ways for people to volunteer and become involved with the Museum. This year’s gala reflects the energy and optimism that has infused the Museum. For the first time, one of our honorees is a noted artist, April Gornik. April resides in Suffolk County on the east end of Long Island, and she has developed an international reputation as a painter of mystical landscapes that range from the spiritual to the sublime to the surreal. By honoring April, we hope to underscore The Heckscher Museum’s commitment to the artistic heritage of Long Island and to contemporary visual artists. We are especially pleased that April Gornik will be presenting an important body of work at The Heckscher in 2009. Marshs clothing store has been an important presence here for decades, as a cornerstone of the business community. Selecting Christopher Mitchell as an honoree emphasizes the importance of The Heckscher’s relationship with the town of Huntington and with the community. The Mitchell family has an especially distinguished history in supporting cultural and other charitable causes. It is obviously a central part of their philosophy to give back to the community and help those in need. Both of these distinguished individuals honor us with their presence tonight.
