Five Centuries of Art:<br />

Selections from <strong>the</strong> Permanent Collection<br />

Through April 26, 2009<br />

This installation of outstanding art spans <strong>the</strong> breadth of <strong>the</strong> Museum’s Permanent<br />

Collection of paintings. Old Master works will include Lucas Cranach’s Virgin, Child,<br />

St. John <strong>the</strong> Baptist and Angels, 1534, <strong>the</strong> oldest work in <strong>the</strong> collection; 17th century paintings<br />

from Holland’s Golden Age, such as Melchior d’Hondecoeter’s magnificent Stripped<br />

of Borrowed Fea<strong>the</strong>rs: The Raven-Jackdaw; Francois Girardon’s baroque sculpture The Rape of<br />

Proserpine, 1693; and 18th century Italian paintings, including a Venice scene depicting<br />

<strong>the</strong> Grand Canal by a follower of Giovanni Antonio Canaletto. Landscapes by European<br />

and American artists, a strength of The <strong>Heckscher</strong> collection, will include works by<br />

William Merritt Chase, Jean-Desire-Gustave Courbet, Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Pena,<br />

Thomas Moran, and William Trost Richards, presenting a variety of 19th century artistic<br />

approaches to <strong>the</strong> recording of place. A small selection of portraits dating from <strong>the</strong><br />

17th through <strong>the</strong> 20th century, including <strong>the</strong> French painter Nicholas de Largillièrre,<br />

<strong>the</strong> English portraitist George Romney, and <strong>the</strong> American Florine Stet<strong>the</strong>imer will also<br />

be on display, as will a rare tile painting by Winslow Homer, Resting Shepherdess, 1872,<br />

and George Grosz’s Eclipse of <strong>the</strong> Sun, 1926.<br />
