PREFACE.<br />
It is now two hundred years s<strong>in</strong>ce Robert Day, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
early settlers <strong>of</strong> Hartford, and <strong>the</strong> ancestor <strong>of</strong> those whose names<br />
are recorded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g pages, was ga<strong>the</strong>red to his fa<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
In present<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>refore to his numerous liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>descendants</strong>, on <strong>the</strong><br />
second centennial<br />
anniversary <strong>of</strong> his death, this enlarged edition <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir Family Register, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention has been to render it a commemorative<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g. Scattered as <strong>the</strong>y already are, and every year<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g more widely separated, it has been <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> compiler<br />
<strong>in</strong> labor<strong>in</strong>g to preserve <strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Puritan l<strong>in</strong>eage,<br />
that this Register, borne with <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>y leave <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs' sepulchres,<br />
will<br />
ever rem<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> obligation <strong>the</strong>y are under, as<br />
<strong>descendants</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early settlers <strong>of</strong> New England, to cherish <strong>the</strong><br />
virtues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Pilgrim ancestors, and <strong>in</strong> testimony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir descent<br />
to uphold and support wherever <strong>the</strong>y may dwell, freedom, laic,<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g and religion.<br />
The small edition <strong>of</strong> this Register, pr<strong>in</strong>ted at New Haven <strong>in</strong><br />
1840, was not only soon exhausted, but was found to conta<strong>in</strong>, what<br />
<strong>in</strong>deed with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>the</strong>n had it was impossible to avoid,<br />
some serious errors.<br />
These, with a considerable number <strong>of</strong> smaller<br />
mistakes, have been corrected and important additions made, by<br />
which <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> names is nearly doubled. Still, it is not expected<br />
that <strong>the</strong> present edition will be found entirely free from<br />
error. In consequence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great variety <strong>of</strong> sources from which<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d is ga<strong>the</strong>red, and <strong>the</strong> defective accuracy <strong>of</strong><br />
many <strong>in</strong>formants, perfect correctness is probably out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> question.<br />
No means, however, have been left unemployed to approximate<br />
to it as nearly as possible.<br />
Where <strong>the</strong> genealogy <strong>of</strong> any branch has not been followed out,<br />
or where dates are want<strong>in</strong>g, no fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation could, be obta<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />
There are some families <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong>ir nearest surviv<strong>in</strong>g relatives<br />
have wholly lost sight. The compiler would respectfully request<br />
<strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong> supply<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> deficiencies which exist.<br />
Although he does not expect to issue ano<strong>the</strong>r edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Register, it<br />
is not impossible that a supplement contani<strong>in</strong>g additions and corrections<br />
may herealtcr be pr<strong>in</strong>ted.<br />
