108 SUMMARY.<br />

In respect to <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease, <strong>the</strong> family has doubled its<br />

numbers, <strong>the</strong> last two centuries, on an average, once <strong>in</strong> somewhat<br />

less than every twenty five years. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease should cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same rate, tlie next hundred years, <strong>the</strong> <strong>descendants</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert Day, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> male l<strong>in</strong>e, would amount <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1948, to<br />

from thirty to fifty thousand souls.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> nearly twenty five hundred whose names are recorded <strong>in</strong><br />

this <strong>register</strong>, four hundred and eighty one have become heads <strong>of</strong><br />

families. Very few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family have been <strong>in</strong> any way dist<strong>in</strong>guished.<br />

To a great extent <strong>the</strong>y have beea farmers. So far as is<br />

known, <strong>the</strong>y have generally been useful and respectable members<br />

<strong>of</strong> society. In some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> branches, nearly every member has<br />

been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> religion. From <strong>the</strong> best <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>the</strong> compiler<br />

has been able to obta<strong>in</strong>, he has been led to <strong>the</strong> conclusion that<br />

<strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uance <strong>of</strong> families <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same place from generation to<br />

generation is not usually favorable to enterprize and <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

success <strong>in</strong> life. N<strong>in</strong>eteen have been graduated at Yale College,<br />

one at Dartmouth, one at Williams, one at Amherst and one at<br />

Brown University. Eleven have been m<strong>in</strong>isters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel, all<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom, with only one exception, are still liv<strong>in</strong>g. Seven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

are connected with <strong>the</strong> Congregational, and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g three<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Baptist denom<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

The average age <strong>of</strong> those who have become heads <strong>of</strong> families<br />

appears to have been about 68 years. The oldest person <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

name was Col. Benjam<strong>in</strong> Day, who died <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1808, <strong>in</strong> his<br />

98th year. His daughter Lydia, (b. Nov. 1, 1759,) <strong>the</strong> widow <strong>of</strong><br />

Henry D wight, Esq., is supposed to be <strong>the</strong> oldest member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

family now liv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
