General
Arkansas Bus Exchange, Winter Garden. MCM 975 was parked in a prime position on this dealer’s forecourt.
Originally in Birkenhead livery (from its days in preservation), in May 2000 it had just been freshly painted in red
with white roof and lower and upper window surrounds. Its recent departure for Universal Studios, Orlando, may
only be a period on loan to promote a film or other production.
Churchill’s English Pub, Miami. The unidentified LD and FLF are located on a parking lot across the street from the
pub, which is a pub in name only and is actually a punk rock club. Neither bus carries any licence plates (though
it is suggested they move from this spot on occasions) nor has any identifying numbers visible, and both seem in
reasonable physical condition. The LD is painted white and is open-top, the FLF is red and retains its top; both
are covered with advertising for the pub. Still present August 2001.
Coliseum, Daytona Beach. The Coliseum was a “dance club” or night club, which may have opened circa 1993/94
and which by 1996 had a double decker bus which was usually kept “round the back”. It was at its busiest
between about mid-February and mid-April when countless students head for Florida at the first signs of spring.
However The Coliseum had gone bankrupt by May 2000 and the bus had disappeared without ever being
identified!
Darryll’s Restaurants, Altamonte Springs. Acquired around 20 RT’s for use internally in restaurants they had in
Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee. Unfortunately very few were ever identified, a task made more difficult
by the fact that several carried incorrect fleet numbers on the bonnetside.
Geenty, Daytona Beach. Bob Geenty used to live in Herne Bay, Kent, and whilst there, acquired AGX 517, a
former London Transport Auxiliary Breakdown Tender (739J), built on the chassis of STL175. In 1990 he moved
to Florida and now owns a motel in Daytona Beach. He brought AGX 517 with him, and keeps it stored under
cover at a nearby airfield.
Gulf Breeze Media, Fort Walton Beach. RWC 605 is kept in immaculate condition, painted red. It is now powered
by a Chevrolet truck engine and has rear wheels slightly smaller than the originals and which stick out beyond
the mud guards. Since about 1996 it has been used as a promotional vehicle for KOOL FM on 92.1 “Good Time
Oldies”, and is called the “Majic Bus”.
Hilton, Wauchula. The owner is Dave Hilton who comes from Mount Vernon, Maine, and who uses the two RTL’s
as mobile homes in the winter. They have been converted in such a way that they in fact form one articulated
unit. KGU 58 (RTL608) has had the complete rear end of the body cut away from behind the rear wheels. KXW
24 (RTL 674) is the trailer having had the driver’s cab and the front of the upper deck removed though it does
retain its engine. The nearside of KXW 24 has been painted blue with a grey whale painted onto it; the
remainder of the unit is mostly in faded London Transport red. Most of the windows have been boarded up with
only a few left for light and ventilation. An off-side door has been fitted into both buses.
Kings Head, Saint Augustine. JVH 370, AEC Regent III/East Lancs L30/28R new to Huddersfield Corporation, was
still outside this British Pub in May 2000.
McCarthy, Ormond Beach. CFC 357C, AEC Renown/Park Royal H38/27F new to City of Oxford MS, was still in
this dealer’s yard in May 2000.
McGuires, Pensacola. DSA 851 was acquired about 1990 when McGuire paid the outstanding storage charge
incurred by its previous owner. As the engine was beyond repair, it has never been used and has been stored
on the premises of Expert Heating and Air Conditioning. Two rows of seats are missing from upstairs, and the
lower saloon had been converted into a kitchen and working area. The general condition of the body is very
poor; it is now being used for the storage of (central heating?) piping and other materials.
Miami Double-Deck Tours, Miami. This was a new venture in 1999 in which Jim Nikitas of Chicago MCC fame,
had an involvement. Previously in 1998 Mr Nikitas had also become involved with New York Double-Deck
Tours, which might explain the migration of BNU 681G, a VR that had been converted to left-hand drive before
being exported from the UK many years ago. The two VR’s ex Arriva were imported into America by, and are
owned by, Busapolis Leasing Ltd., of Wilmette, IL, another Nikitas company. When seen in May 2000, BNU
681G, had sustained roof damage, and the two Arriva VR’s were still in West Herts College colours, the livery
they wore to operate local routes in Watford; it is not known if they had actually operated, or not. There were
some Neoplans in this fleet and they, too, were acquired through Busapolis Leasing.
Universal Studios, Orlando. MCM 975 may just be on loan for the summer season to help promote recent films
from the Universal studios.
Wells Motor Company, Avon Park. LEL 653F is used as an “eye-catcher” at their Chrysler dealership, and is also
entered in parades, etc..
