VIII. Conclusion
I. Introduction
The only way to truly know where we are is to know where we have been. This is why we
compile histories, so that we can remember and learn not only from what worked well in the past, but
what has not worked well.
The Western District has had a long and fascinating history, even though the District itself is
younger than all of us! We have tried to bring some of the fascination to life, to show that history
is more than mere dates and nameless faces. History is what brought us here, and history will
dictate what the future will bring. We have had a road with some great joys and a few bumps along
the way, but we stand as a united district, better and stronger than ever. We owe a great thanks to
those brothers and sisters who came before us, who carved out our history and their paths so that
we could enjoy the successes that we have today. This history is dedicated to all of our alumni of
the Western District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, without whom there would be nothing
to write.
If there is an error in the facts of our history, you are encouraged contact the current Western District
Member at Large or the current Western District Vice President of Special Projects. This process
is ongoing; it will never be truly “finished”. But it will be strengthened and enriched if all brothers and
sisters, including alumni, participate fully in its editing and compilation.
II. Start of the Western District
In the 1980ʼs, the National Headquarters had started a reorganization and realignment of the
districts of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma to accommodate the growth that was
occurring throughout the nation in the organizations after the final contractions of the 1970ʼs. In
1987, at the National Convention held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it was decided that the states
of what was then District I (Idaho, Oregon, and Washington), District II (Arizona,
California, Nevada, and Utah), and District X (Alaska and Hawaii), along with parts of
Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico (the portions of those states west of the Rocky
Mountains) were to be combines into one district for the Western United States. They also
decided to scrap the Roman numeral designation used at that time and to adopt a new
naming system based on the geography of the various new districts.
The original name proposed by the National Jurisdiction Committee was the West District.
However, members of the delegation from the newly formed district didnʼt like that name, and
lobbied for a slightly different twist on the name. Their efforts paid off, and the new district
was christened the Western District. This slight difference was the beginning of the reputation
that the Western District would hold (and still holds today) for being just a little bit different, a
little bit further ahead on progressive ideas.
In 1988, Psi and Epsilon Kappa chapters at UCLA hosted the first Convention of the Western
District in Los Angeles, California. At this convention, the decision was made to hold a
convention every year rather than two years, as had occurred in the old District II. Also
changed was the length of the terms of district officers, which were shortened to a single year.
The name for the district publication, the Accent, was selected at this convention, and the first
publishers for the Western District were the newly activated Iota Alpha and Eta Omega
chapters from California State University, Fresno. 1
1 UCLA was the publisher of the district publication from 1986 1988, but that was when they were still part of District II.
They did publish the district newsletter in 1987, as one of the two year terms that were in place at the time

On July 10th, 1993, the Gamma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi was reactivated at the University
of Washington. Also, the chunks of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming were reapportioned to
the Southwest (New Mexico) and Midwest (Colorado and Wyoming) Districts at the National
convention, to conform to state borders.
4 The election for Member at Large resulted in a tie. Since there was no solution in the bylaws to solve the tie situation,
both candidates were given the position and served as co-Members at Large.
5 At the National Convention in this year, it was decided to appoint co-governors for the Western District. There have
Chapter of the Year: Beta Omicron, Arizona State University
In 1995, the Western District Councils created the Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma
Chapter of the Year award.
Later on that year, the Iota Kappa chapter at Boise State University went inactive. The
office of Vice President in Tau Beta Sigma was split into two offices to ease the
duties and to conform to Nation Council structures.
During this year, the Western District Challenge was created. It reads:
7 Matt DeCample of Iota Gamma was appointed to the vacated Vice President position halfway through the year.

VIII. Conclusion
Obviously, there are holes and gaps in this history. These holes are not permanent, however. They
can be filled in with your help and cooperation. Please feel free to contribute to this history, so that
it can grow and expand as our district grows and expands.
This, as said before, is not the end of the story. It is just another step in the process of
collecting and refining the history of the Western District. Hopefully, future compilers will find the
format that I have used easy to understand. The goal is to make it easier in the future for information
to be collected and simply plugged in wherever the future compliers of the history see fit.
Again, if you have any information not included in this history or find an error, PLEASE email your
district officers! We are trying to make this document as useful and accurate as possible.
