The AccentSpring 2008 EditionZac Humphrey and Katie KozmaFrom the Desks of your Western District Presidents!First off, we would like to express how honored we are to beselected to serve the Western District this upcoming year. Weboth have many ideas, goals, and visions to continue to move ourDistrict forward in a positive manner, but we would also love tohear your ideas because we feel that the best way to serve ourBrothers and Sisters is by knowing exactly what you want fromyour District Council.Service/Music/Leadership:In Tau Beta Sigma one of our main purposes as stated inthe mission statement is to serve collegiate bands. It is also achief aim or ours to promote music as well asleadership within our colleges and universities. With the success that we have had in the past two years, I believe that continuing to implementservice projects that illustrate music and leadership into district events is extremely important. Iplan on continuing to make this happen with the help of the elected officers as well as your ideas.Communication:Communication is one of the most important aspects of making organizations as rewarding aspossible for every member. Not only does it strengthen our bond, but it increases the love we havefor each other. The improvement of communication within in the district begins with having respectfor every member within the district. I have found that over the past two years the communicationand support from the district council has improved the districts level of communication on a verypositive note and I would like to continue with this trend, but there is still room for improvement. To offer up a communication solution, I plan to have monthly meetings with the chapter presidentsover aim chats and through phone conference calls. I would like to communicate with District Officersfrom other Districts to exchange ideas and hopefully gain some new and exciting project ideas. Zacplans on initiating the Buddy Chapters Program to the Kappa Kappa Psi Chapters in the WesternDistrict and from this we plan on implementing a Joint Buddy Chapters Program. We feel that theBuddy Chapters Program has been developed to strengthen our bonds of Brotherhood and Sisterhoodas well as district communication despite the many miles that separate each of our chapters. It willbe a fun and exciting way to continue to make it known that THE BEST ARE IN THE WEST!District Involvement:I plan on truly encouraging district involvement not only at district events such as DistrictLeadership Conference, State Days, and Conventions, but also outside of these events. I plan oncarrying out this endeavor by continuing to utilize the current program chairs as well as making theWestern District more aware of the events that are going on throughout the district. Such eventsinclude degree dates and retreats as well as dates for fundraisers or service projects being put on byindividual chapters. My goal is to compile all of the dates for these specific happening and use the WDwebsite as well as the newly created Buddy Chapters facebook group to make such announcements.Personally, I plan on being as involved as I can as well, by making chapter visits. I feel that it is veryimportant to give each chapter personal attention and support because it is this support that canhelp chapters in need become more organized and more involved. I was thrilled to be able to visitBeta Omicron, Gamma Kappa, Alpha Chi, and both Omega Chapters over my spring break and I lookforward to the many adventures that are in store for me as a District Officer.Page 5

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionHeeelllooo Western District! From Your WD KKPsi Secretary/Treasurer[by Candace “CLEO” Roberts, WD KKY Sec/Treas]It’s my honor to be writing you all as the new Kappa Kappa Psi Western District Secretary/Treasurer! For those of you who may not know me, my name is Candace “CLEO” Roberts andI’m a member of the Beta Omicron chapter at Arizona State University (Go ‘Devils!). I was born inOxnard, California, and there I stayed until I moved to Tempe to attend ASU. I am currently pursuinga BIS major in communications and business, along with a double minor in music and special eventmanagement. I play tenor saxophone in the Arizona State University Sun Devil Marching Band and Ihave been a member of Kappa Kappa Psi since the fall of 2006.But enough about me, let’s talk about the WESTERN DISTRICT! First of all, I’d like to thankIota Kappa for hosting a great District Convention this year! Even though I was stressed-out half ofthe time with running for Office, the Western District continued to show why the Best are in the West.My two main goals for the year are to facilitate communication between chapters in the District, aswell as bring some new fundraising projects to the District. I think that a lot of the time, we get socaught up with what’s happening in our own Chapter that we forget that there are 12 other chaptersin the District that are probably going through or have experienced the same thing. Through monthlydiscussiontopics, I hope to narrow the gap between chapters and create an environment whereSecretaries and Treasurers (along with other Chapter Officers and members!) feel comfortable askingfor advice, getting suggestions, or just checking in with other chapters in the District.Throughout the summer, I’ll also be diving into the world of fundraising and hope to have apreliminary list of fundraisers to offer to chapters for the first ever Western District Kappa Kappa PsiMonth of Fundraising as well as fundraisers that can be incorporated into State Days as well as forgeneral use by the chapters. While it’s up you to decide what type of fundraisers you want to do, weall need a starting point sometimes and I want to help make the process as painless as possible. As much as I want to serve as a resource for the Secretaries and Treasurers of the WesternDistrict, I, along with the rest of the District Council, are here for ALL of YOU! If you ever have anyquestions, comments, concerns, suggestions, etc. etc, feel free to email me at wdsec_trea@kkpsi.org.AEA,Candace “CLEO” RobertsKKΨ Western District Secretary/Treasurer, 2008-2009Page 8

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionSo often I hear about Brothers and Sistersbeing so incredibly busy that they have notime to sleep, and they can’t find enough timein the day to do everything that they need todo. I know I often find myself wishing for 30hour days because that would make everythingso much easier to accomplish! This can befixed with one easy method. PRIORITIZE!!!There are definitely things that are moreimportant than others to get done. Doingyour homework and going to class is probablymore important than working on mastering“Through Fire and Flames” on Expert difficultyfor Guitar Hero III (if it’s even possible). Sobefore you sit down on Facebookfor the next 3 hours and ignoreevery word that is in here, here’sjust something to think about.Make a to-do list of things that youwould like to accomplish for thatday, or week. Then rank the tasksin importance so you know whichones need to be finished the earliest. It’s a lotharder to ignore a task that is staring you inthe face than a mental note that keeps gettingpushed to the back of your mind, especially ifit’s ranked highest on the list. Micromanagingis another thing that helps you accomplishmore in the long run because it breaksmonumental tasks into smaller things thatdon’t seem quite so impossible. Also, if needbe, write down your daily schedule so that youknow exactly what you need to do, where it is,and when you should do it.Is Time Not on your Side?[by Scotty Phillips, WD MAL]Prioritize, make a todolist, rank your todolist, micromanage, schedule, and thenFunFun time or sleeponce everything isdone.Page 9Sometimes a little structure in a day can go along way in terms of being able to achieve asmuch as you can.At times though, all this structure can really beincredibly stressful and make things seem a lotharder than they could be. For all I know, youcould be rebuilding a full-scale replica of theGreat Wall of China with your bare hands all byyourself, and for that I give you all the creditin the world. But most times we aren’t doingsomething like that, it’s more often that paperthat’s due in a week and getting a chance topractice for ensemble rehearsal or a lessonthat week. It’s important to sleepand/or unwind a little bit every nowand then. This is then the time whereit would be ok to work on becoming,“The Guitar Hero” by getting 100% on“Through Fire and Flames” on Expert(if that’s even humanly possible)unless it’s 3 AM when you finisheverything. Sleeping is the betteroption then. Just remember that this shouldn’tget in the way of everything else you need tobe doing right now.In one phrase: prioritize, make a to-do list, rank your to-do list, micromanage, schedule, and then FunFun time or sleep once everythingis done. Hopefully this helps you figure outwhat to not to do to feel overloaded andoverwhelmed with everything going on in yourlife. Just some ideas to help figure out howto survive this crazy life experience we callcollege and Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma.Omicron’s Mascot: Herbie the Love BugIn February 2005 Herbie the Love Bug became the official mascot of TBS Omicron. The chaptervoted on him because they liked his audacious personality, much like our chapter. Herbie isopinionated, but is always perseveres in time of trial. He may be stubborn at times but he alwaysdoes his part to help people. His three stripes fit our chapter very well, white and blue for TBS andred for the University of Utah.We also have a mascot for all of the chapters in Utah. He is a stuffed monkey named Cochino. Hehas helped tighten the bond between the Iota Iota, Theta Eta and Omicron Chapters. Both Herbieand Cochino have Facebook profiles and they would love to be your friend.

The AccentCommunication: Not Just a Buzzword!Communication is a word you hear a lotaround Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. It isthe answer to every problem and the issue that everyofficer runs on. “What do you want to do with youroffice?” “I want to improve communication!” The realquestion is how do we, as officers, active members, oreven alumni, improve communication? In order to answer that question, we have tolook at what communication is. Communication hasbeen defined as “the exchange of thoughts, messages,or information” and “interpersonal rapport”. Bothdefinitions are useful for members of our fraternityand sorority. We definitely want to exchange ideasand thoughts, and we also should be building ourrelationships with one another. But again, how do wedo that?In the arena of exchanging thoughts, we assisters and brothers have many opportunities to shareideas. If you have a great idea, don’t hesitate to shareit with your chapter, either in a meeting setting or justby calling up an officer. If your chapter is running dryon project ideas, have a brainstorming session butmake it fun! Turn it into a social event with snacks;have one person give words or topics to get the ballrolling, and divide up into teams. Give small prizesto the team(s) that come up with the best ideas. Also, don’t be afraid to steal ideas from other chapters! Ifyou heard about a great project that Omega did, callthem up, e-mail them, or Facebook them and justask. “I thought that your work with Relay for Lifewas great and I would like to try something similarwith my chapter. Can you give me any suggestions?”Chances are, that chapter will be flattered that youthought their project was worthy of imitation.Another form of exchanging information is theever popular bulletin board. If your chapter does nothave a bulletin board in your music department, talkto your sponsor, Director of Bands, and/or departmentchair about getting one. This is a great tool for leavinginformation about upcoming events or just little notesfor your members. You can also use your bulletinboard to publicize your projects once they have beencompleted through pictures. This not only tells yourdepartment what you have been doing to serve thebands, but can also be a recruiting tool, as potentialmembers have the chance to see exactly what KappaKappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma do.[By Janet “Dagny” Maggio]Spring 2008 EditionWhile sharing ideas is important, the biggestcommunication problem members face tends to beinterpersonal. This can mean communication betweenmembers of a chapter, communication betweenchapters, or communication between active membersand alumni members. This article is not going to focuson how to resolve conflict, but instead is meant to giveyou ideas on how to reach out to all these types ofsisters and brothers.Everyone likes to feel special. An easy wayto accomplish this is simply through a pretty note orcard. I just received a note in the mail on cute floralstationary from a sister who wanted to simply send megood wishes and offer her support. I felt honored andtouched that she took the time to sit down and writeme. This is an example of how a simple gesture canmake us as brothers and sisters feel more connectedto one another and strengthen our bonds. Have a daywhere you sit down as a chapter and make somethingspecial but simple for each member of another group, like a different chapter or your brother or sister chapterat your school. Many chapters send out Christmas cards witha picture of their chapter in them. While this is greatand should continue, why only at Christmastime? Trycelebrating little events, like your chapter anniversary, their chapter’s anniversary, or even Secretary’s Day(yes, this does exist). Secretaries from all around theWestern District could send each other little cards and/or gifts.Take the time to acknowledge your ownmembers as well. Many chapters do roses orcarnations at their meetings; you could extend thisto sending in roses and carnations to The Accent(shameless plug #1) or having mock awards for eachmember at the end of the year. Remember that bulletinboard from earlier? Give members little notes ofencouragement or just write a quick hello and leaveit there. Everyone likes seeing something with theirname on it; again, it helps people feel special.Alumni often feel left out or unimportant. For those new alumni who were active leaders, thetransition from active to alumni can be very hard.Reach out to those alumni by making them feelwelcome at all your chapters’ events. Make sure yourAlumni Secretary keeps them up to date through useof a listserv, newsletter, or most importantly, personalPage 10

The AccentCommunication: Not Just a Buzzword! Cont’dSpring 2008 Editioncontact. Create an alumni group on Facebook or MySpace, or just call them and talk to them. Alumni still havegreat ideas and advice to give to your chapter.I hope you have found some ideas in this article to bring to your chapter. As District Secretary/Treasurer,I feel that strengthening communication is part of my job. Take every opportunity to participate in projectslike the Buddy Chapter program and utilize your District Officers-we were elected to serve YOU, the WesternDistrict! In the Bond,Janet “Dagny” Maggio2008-2009 Tau Beta Sigma Western District Secretary/TreasurerEducation, does it ever end?[by Mary “BeAUx Peep” Pagendarm, WD TBS VPM]The easy answer to this question is no, and while post-membership education is a term thrown around quiteoften, what does it really mean? No matter what chapter we come from there are a few basic things that weall learn as prospective members: chapter officers, basic history, the Greek alphabet, and the tenets of ourorganization. Retention of this information however is often scarce at best. I will point out that there areexceptions to this rule, and these exceptional individuals can quote every bit of information they were evertaught but I will admit I am not one of them. I do my best to look to live by the factors, qualities and purposesof my organization but I cannot quote all of them in order off the top of my head. So what can I do about it?One answer to is work on memorization but another is to look deeper. Discussions about the meaning of ourpurposes and how we are living up to them are far more meaningful than pure memorization. As a chapter Iurge you to take a step back once in awhile and really look at what you stand for and how you are living up to it.There is so much to be gained from looking again at everything you were taught as a candidate. Taking anotherstep back allows you to look at your chapter as a whole and have open discussions with your sisters or brothersabout concerns, thoughts and ideas. Sharing with each other is a great way to bond and to increase trust andrespect for each other. Different things work for different chapters but some of my favorites are teambuildingactivities, retreats, and games or challenges about core knowledge. I guess my advice would be to just keeplooking for the opportunities for PME, challenge your chapter to come up with new lessons, bonding activities, and opportunities for growth. Nobody knows everything and we all have something to teach each other, so ifyou have an idea share it with your chapter and please please share your ideas with Adam and myself, we wouldlove nothing more than to hear from you.Much love in the bond,Mary “BeAUx Peep” PagendarmWestern District ΤΒΣ Vice President of MembershipPage 11

The AccentAre you prepared to lead your chapter?[by Tanya Marsh, WD KKY Governor]Spring 2008 EditionIt is that inevitable time of year again…….the summer is coming, the band schedule is wrapping up, and your chapter isgearing up for chapter elections. (Well, most of the chapters are turning over officers at this time of year). Are you planningon running for a chapter office? Have you prepared for your candidacy? This article hopefully will help you prepare andthink about key areas you may not have considered.Running for a chapter office should not be taken lightly, and certainly should be well researched and prepped for. Here aresome items that will make you a better candidate, and in the long run a better officer for the fraternity:1 – Research the position you are running for – First and foremost, head to your chapter and national constitutions toresearch the bare minimum requirements for being an officer within your chapter. After that, seek out the current officer(or past brothers who have filled the role) and ask them about their experience. Inquire about what they enjoyed most, where the biggest challenges were, and what some key areas of success were for them. The more research you do,the more prepared you will be for the office and the less “ramp up” time you will need when transitioning to the new role.Preparedness shows you have a vested interest in the officer position and have weighed all of the benefits with risks.Want to go the extra mile? Call/email the district officer that is aligned with your role, and inquire about theparticular facets of the job!2 – Create a solid plan with ideas – It’s amazing how many candidates spout off wonderful rhetoric with very littlearticulation about their ideas. And sadly, many chapter actives buy this “act” and put those people into office. Quite often, when their term ends they have little action to show for it. When running for office think about two or three major goals youhave for the office, and articulate how you will get them done. That means being able to discuss what your timeline wouldbe, what type of resources you would need, and how you plan to accomplish the goals. You should be able to describehow it will look to actives, how it will feel, and paint an image so the membership will understand how they will know theproject was accomplished. This type of planning demonstrates your commitment to the success of the chapter, and yourorganization and planning abilities.Want to go the extra mile? Create a document that highlights your three main platform ideas/goals, and lists outthe specific steps, communication plans, and/or tactics for achievement! Hand this out to actives prior to yourelections.3 – Don’t be afraid to question conventionality – All great leaders understand the need to take risks. Part of this is alsobeing able to convince others that the risks will benefit the whole. Look at the current position and evaluate the following:What works well, where does the office usually get stuck, and if we could change anything what would it be. Once youhave answered those questions, you should be able to identify for active members where you have creative solutions forthis role! It’s important to evaluate and make changes in any position – even if you have a successful predecessor – youshouldn’t come in just to be a clone of them. Bring your creativity and originality to the role. Being innovative displays yourwillingness to continually push your chapter to the next level.Want to go the extra mile? Talk with other officers in other chapters to seek out different ideas and things they do.Look at the different ideas from around the district or nation; don’t be afraid to introduce something new in yourchapter. Above all, be able to describe the need for your identified changes.4 – Above all, be honest and don’t over commit – Great leaders have one common quality, and that is their abilityto be honest. When you are a candidate for office, be honest about your abilities and don’t just say what you think yourchapter wants to hear. If you are more challenged in an area or less experienced, be prepared to speak about how youwill balance those shortcomings (by seeking resources, utilizing other leaders, or you plan for learning). If you are takinga full class load, but know you can still serve the office then make sure you have a plan outlined for how you will combatthe time commitments. If you aren’t honest when you run for office, you are not only selling yourself short but you arejeopardizing the success of your chapter. An honest candidate is a mark of a good leader, who concerns him/herself withthe livelihood of the organization.Want to go the extra mile? List out a few of the areas you know will be challenging for you in the role, and prepareyour thoughts and plans for how you will overcome these items. Share those with the active members in yourchapter.Page 12

Cont’dServing as a chapter officer can be a wonderful experience, and offers the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge thatis transferable to other areas of your life. It takes all types of leaders to step up in these roles and help our chapters findgreater success. Consider the areas you can help your chapter, and hopefully you will join the ranks of the leaders whocame before you. Above all, seek to find understanding in the officer position and its impact to the Kappa Kappa Psiorganization – only then can you truly find plan for your success.Best of luck during your officer elections, I look forward to seeing all the officers inducted in the next few months!AEA All Day, EverydayTanya MarshWestern District GovernorLambda Alpha Has Crabs!!No not that, it’s Crabs the mascot of the Lambda Alpha Chapter at UCI.Anyway, The Origin of Crabs! This way whenever anotherchapter decided to steal our mascot Lambda Alpha would be able to say,“(Insert chapter name here) got Crabs from us.”I always like to say that we have Crabs (or Sebastian if you lookclosely) because our Big Brother Chapter Psi has Jeffery, from the Disneyfilm The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and therefore our chapter shouldhave a Disney mascot too. The AccentSpring 2008 EditionRoadside Assistance[by ArtOo, Eta Omega Chapter]Picture it: Western District Convention 2008 has justended, you’ve got your car all packed, everybody’sready to go, you’ve stopped to get gas, and you’refollowing two other cars packed with brothers andsisters to caravan your way back to California and thenBAM! Before you know it, your temperature gauge hasgone from cool to red and you’re on the side of the roadwith people from your chapter (or brother chapter) andbrothers that you met briefly at convention, but barelyknew at all.I was stressed out because I was responsible not onlyfor myself, but for the four other people in my carand my job was to get them back to Fresno safely andin a timely manner. But my brothers and sisters gotme through it. While the car from Fresno went aheadof us to look out for a parts store or garage, the carfrom San Jose stuck with us for the grueling mile anda half to the nearest Schuck’s, where we were able toget what we needed—or so we thought—to get backon the road again. That was us on the way home from Boise, Idaho.Having been an active sister for nearly three years now,I thought I’d experienced brotherhood and sisterhood.I thought I knew what that bond truly felt like, thoughtI understood it. But when my brothers and sisters werestanding out there beside me on the side of the road, refusing to leave for Fresno and San Jose even thoughI told them to go ahead, I began to finally understandwhat I’d joined and what the bond between brother andsister truly means. We got the car fixed—the water pump was shot—andmade it back to Fresno, but I’ve never experienceda feeling like that in my three years involved withTBS. I’d like to publicly thank StingER, HELLENKELLER, and Heidi from Lambda Psi for beingthere for brothers and sisters you’d barely met overthe weekend, and to BuNsen, AJAX, RacKeT, andcandidate RuFiO for sticking around no matter howmuch I said to go home. Another thanks to HORNet,ziNniA, Acornya, and candidate kataMARI for beingso chill during the whole fiasco. You all showed methe meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood, and I’llnever forget it.Eta Omega’s Mascots: Maple and KeatsMaple and Keats have been with the Eta Omega chapter since the Spring of 2007. Maple was born in LasVegas, Nevada, and Keats was born right here in Fresno, California. Some of our sisters briefly met Maple while attending the preconventionmeeting in Vegas and absolutely fell in love with her. They came home to the chapter and insisted that we adopt this giantyellow duck and show her the true meaning of sisterhood. Maple is agreat cuddler, listener, and friend to all. She’s been everywhere fromLas Vegas to Boise and even to Utah when she managed to hitch aride home with sisters from Omicron last year.BeAUx Peep met Keats while at work one day and upon hearing thatour chapter was looking to adopt a new mascot, she insisted that wegive him a chance. Eta Omega was introduced to Keats during oneof our separate meetings, and the encounter was enjoyable for thosewho were involved. Keats is always seen sporting either of his twooutfits: his 007-esque tuxedo or his Las Vegas t-shirt and shorts. He’svery well-traveled and loved getting to go to National Convention in Orlando last summer!Page 15

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionAlpha Xi Shares on Social: “If You Really Know Me”[by Melissa L. Measor, TBS Alpha Xi, Bowling Green State University]Bonding opportunities are a significant aspect of a successful Sisterhood. The Sisters of Alpha Xi at Bowling Green StateUniversity in Bowling Green, Ohio have numerous chances to improve their bond and learn about each other throughoutthe school year. Many of these activities are ones in which we do annually, including “Something Special” night.During this activity, Sisters are asking to bring one item that holds a significant meaning to them. We sit in a circle andindividually present our “Something Special”, allowing the Sisterhood to learn a bit more about each other, strengtheningour bond. This activity is always a wonderful experience. This year, Alpha Xi decided to try something new. During the fallsemester, the Sisters packed their bags and went camping for a night. Aftera Friday Falcon Marching Band rehearsal, many of the Sisters gatheredtheir sleeping bags, tents and all the warmth they could muster and headedto Grand Lake St. Mary’s campground. By the time the majority of usarrived, the moon was out and we had to set up by car headlights. Thoughthis seemed to be a difficult (and very chilly) task, we all had many laughsonce our tents were put together. After we were settled in, the Sisters madehot dogs, s’mores and played a giant game of Twister. However, manyof us agree that the most significant aspect of the night was around thecampfire. For hours, we sat, told stories and played games that allowedeach other to really learn about each other. After it got too cold for us tohandle, we retired to our tents and curled up in many layers to keep warm.Holding this retreat was an amazing opportunity for the Sisters of AlphaXi to bond and reconnect as a whole. The key to planning a successfulcampout is to plan early! Spark interest early on within the semester andutilize the assistance of a committee so that the work is easily distributed. Find a location relatively close to your campusso you can arrive early within the evening. Also, take advantage of a group price rate that most campsites offer, even ifthis means staying in an area without lighting (this may make the trip a bit more adventurous!). Alpha Xi had an amazingtime on their first camping Retreat and we are looking forward to next year’s adventures! The Alpha Xi of Tau Beta Sigma chapter would like to send many greetings to the Sisters of Tau Beta Sigma and Brothersof Kappa Kappa Psi of the Western District!Page 17

Afterelections last year, it was clearthat the Psi brothers wanted topush harder for service. We haveaccomplished this in a multitudeof ways.By staying in contact with oneof our alumni, we were able tohelp out with Padres Contra ElCáncer, an amazing organizationcommitted to improving thequality of life for Latino childrenwith cancer, which was a perfectway of getting Psi involved in thegreater Los Angeles area.We were also able to help out themarching band in a big way duringmarching season by constructingan elaborate prop, a Trojan horse, for our famous Downfall of Troyshow designed to mock our rivalschool U$¢, and by helping ourequipment crew transport anderect the horse at the Rose Bowl. This quarter, we are putting ourlargest effort in starting a hugeproject that our band director hasbeen passionate about, called thehistorical project, which entailsscanning and archiving relics fromthe UCLA band’s rich history sothat future bandsman have a senseof pride when seeing how storiedtheir band is.While service has been the focalpoint on our chapter, we havealso made progress in betteringour chapter in many other ways.Earlier in the year, we sat down, often late into the night, toform a dramatic overhaul of ourcurrent alcohol policy to betterreflect our goals as a chapter, ourexpectations as a bandsman atUCLA, and our duties as a brother. It was tedious at times, but was atestament to how well our largechapter is able to communicateand disagree with each other, and, when necessary, come togetheron a decision that will affect ourchapter for years to come. Finally, one of the projects thatI personally found the mostrewarding was Active Night.Through a cohesion of ideas, ourSocial Coordinator and Sergeantat arms came together to createan amazing event to reach for thecore of what our degrees meanto each of us on a personal level, and simply what we’ve gainedas a brother. By the end of thenight, I felt a deep attachment andrespect to all those present, andunderstand why I’m proud to be abrother.Overall, the Psi Chapter hashad an amazing year with manyunique and diverse projects thattruly represent all of the purposesthat we hold as important. WOAH!!! Seriously…WOAH!!!!!Clam down. Take a few deep breaths and collectyourself because you’ve just signed up for oneof the wildest rides of your life.Second thing’s second. Take a good long nap…maybe four or five days worth.Thirdly…Fourthly. It’s time to dive into thatabyss that is “the box.” Swim around and seewhat you can find. What works? What doesn’t?What do you need? What don’t you? What canyou improve upon? Once you ask yourself allthese questions and figure out the answers toSpring 2008 Editionthem, it’s time to start planning and figuring outexactly how to accomplish these visions.Another idea is to send emails or make phonecalls around the district to your counterparts inother chapters, or your buddies on the DistrictCouncil (we don’t bite unless you ask us to) andsee what works in other places and see if youcan bring any of those ideas and adapt them tofit your chapter. The most…most important thing: Don’t letanyone…anyone talk badly about your mom. The AccentOMEGAlympics[by Niki Glavich, Omega]Spring 2008 EditionThe joint chapters of Omega, at the University of Arizona have created an afternoon of fun calledOmegalympics. During this event the Brothers and Sisters are divided into four teams, with each team havinga mix of Brothers and Sisters. The teams then compete in various games for points, with the winning teamreceiving a prize and most importantly, bragging rights. Omegalympics begins with a round of Lifesaver Relay,in which each member holds a toothpick in their mouth and passes a Lifesaver from one toothpick to the nextwithout using hands. The next event we move into is an exciting battle of Tug~o~War. After Tug~o~War wemove into a relay race/obstacle course. This relay event combines the old favorites of Dizzy Bat, Three LeggedRace, Crab Walk, and Sprint. It is always one of the most exciting events and full of surprises. We then havea water balloon toss. The next relay we have is the infamous food relay. This event consists of team membersrunning a short distance, reaching in a bag and pulling out a food item, such as a 6 oz. can of soda and a handfulof crackers. They then have to chew and swallow the food, show the officiator that they do not have anymorefood in their mouth, and then run back and tag the next person in line. After the various games we play a roundor two of Dodgeball or Kickball.Brosis Awareness Week[by Dori Guest, Omega]The Omega chapters of KKΨ and TBΣ at the University of Arizona have created a week-long eventthat focuses on strengthening the bonds between brothers and sisters. BROSIS AWARENESS WEEKstarts with our Monday meeting, where we will pass out BROSIS AWARENESS ribbons and pickthe name of a buddy from the other organization (our “brosis”) out of a hat to write them a funand happy letter. We will also be playing “Guess the Nickname and Win Some Candy” game!On Tuesday we will eat lunch with our brosis and share our deepest and darkest secrets. OnWednesday we will all attend the Jazz A concert as a joint chapter, as well as prepare and attendthe reception that follows. Thursday includes texting or facebooking a haiku or limerick to ourbrosis that professes the love and adoration we have for each other. On Friday, members of thePride of Arizona Marching Band, KKΨ and TBΣ will be performing at and participating in Relay forLife on the UA campus. We will walk with our brosis, hand in hand, so all the world can see thatwe LOVE our brothers and sisters!Page 28

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionBrotherhood Story of Epic ProportionsAs told by: Sarah HillA few weeks ago it was our chapter’s annual Retreat to northern Arizona. We stayed at a campgroundabout 30 minutes outside of Strawberry, AZ, and had a big group of BO brothers represented. On thesecond day, most of us decided we would go on a hike to the nearby lake. So, the group of us set outaround 9am, and about 2 miles later, found ourselves surrounded by beauty. The lake, the trees, androcks made for a wonderful backdrop.Randy (an Active) and Emily (then, a Prospective, and Randy’s littlebrother) decided to trail off from there on their own adventure, hikingaround the rocks and steep cliff right by the water. Some others went offon their own too, but most of us hung out by the waterside.

The AccentSpring 2008 Editionbasically, and on the mountain. Did I mention it was really windy? He held onto a tree, and I pulledEmily up enough so that only her legs were hanging off the edge. She climbed up me to Randy, andthen all the way to the semi-flat area farther behind us. Randy pulled me up, and we walked up tomeet her. We were all crying/teary, and happy, and hugging each other. It was crazy scary, really hardto believe what had just happened. So we took some pictures, and it was amazing. :)happy ending :Dcave picture! The endThe wonder that is Zeta Xi’s mascot…GATORADEBy: Katie KozmaGatorade the alligator puppet has been Zeta Xi’s mascot since Fall of 2000, when we purchased himfrom Toys R Us because of the cool roar that he made. The two names that were brought up while naminghim were Gatorade and Onomatopoeia. Gatorade ended up being the winning name for the mere reason thatthe actives wanted to say his name like they do in the movie The Waterboy with Adam Sandler. When he firstbecame the mascot, he lived in a house made out of a Chex Mix box, which is where he stayed when he wasn’tjoining the actives for degrees, chapter events, and district events. He was actually formally initiated into the Zeta Xi Chapter in Spring 2002. He was the only candidatein the Alpha Chi class. That spring, we didn’t have any candidates rushing Tau Beta Sigma so, while Eta Muconducted their ritual, Zeta Xi would practice reading and improving the TBS ritual and Gatorade was thestand-in candidate. In 2004, one of the Sisters of Zeta Xi, Stixen made Gatorade a suitcase full of clothes including anSDSU bands shirt and assorted ritual attire. Also in the year 2004, two actives took Gatorade along with them toBoise for DLC and there his voice box froze and he could no longer roar. Emergency surgery was performed toreplace it for him and now his roar sounds a little funny. There have been many attempts to kidnap Gatorade over the years, most of which were staged byIota Pi. Gatorade is missing an eye because of one of these attempts. We have a couple of different strategiesthat we have used over the years to prevent him from being kidnapped. Gatorade had a girlfriend/stunt doublecalled Gatorbabe, but we have no idea what happened to her . We have zip tied him to the arm of an activewhile he was present at district events and sometimes we even use him as a boxing glove to ward off potentialkidnappers. He was kidnapped by Lance at CA State Days 2007 and once again at WDC 2008, but he iscurrently safe in San Diego with his Sisters. Gatorade has been an amazing asset and mascot for Zeta Xi and wetruly look forward to the many more memories that he will create for our Chapter.Page 30

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionKappa Kappa Psi Omega’s Mascot: Sylvia[Submitted by: Zach “Sister” Sanchez]It has recently come to the attention of the Brothers of Omega that our dear mascot, Sylvia, mayhave offended some of the Brothers and Sisters of the Western District. We would like to take thisopportunity to apologize to all bothered by her presence, for that was never our intention. We aresorry. Our relationships with each and every one of you are something we hold dear.To begin to understand why such a “unique” mascot came to be, one must understand thehistory of the Omega Chapter. In the early 1990’s, we find KKPsi–Omega populated by a group ofoutstanding men, and a few women, with a strong dedication to the Broservicing of the bands. These individuals happened to have an appreciation for a “crude” sense of humor, if you will.To further demonstrate my point: at the time of the mascot selection, the National Chapterfound itself in a frenzy of furry mascot adoptions. Stuffed rabbits, dinosaurs, and bovines madetheir debuts as chapter mascots and our members found it only fitting that a sheep be selectedas ours. (Insert Animal House joke here)…Exactly. To the Brothers’ dismay, they found thatmaintaining a live sheep would be next to impossible and the purchase of a blow-up sheep wasbeyond a reasonable price for their budget. The obvious choice from there was a blow-up person!Sylvia was born. The tongue-in-cheek decision to make a blow-up doll the mascot of Omega was accompaniedby the addition of an extensive wardrobe, including a dress for the convention dance! The morerecent appearances of Sylvia have included a more risqué approach. While RV-ing to conventionin Ontario, Sylvia was inked with a large Omega and adorned with an “extra small” special editionPride of Arizona uniform. During this time she also became an advocate of practicing safe sex, anissue important to many college-aged adults.Al in all, Sylvia’s lifespan has expanded the borders of conventional humor. While herexistence has provided, for the Brothers of Omega, a cheap laugh come convention season eachyear, we understand how her presence may not be as off-handedly accepted by those who are notprivy to our joviality on the matter. Regardless, Sylvia will always hold a special place in the heartsof Omega and will always cherish her hard-earned title of “Classy Broad of Gamma Kappa”.Respectfully submitted,Brother Zach “Sister” SanchezHistorianKappa Kappa Psi – OmegaPresenting Gamma RadiationThe Gamma chapter would like to present to some and introduce to others our newly formed boy-band.They go by the name of Gamma Radiation and are made up of five members: Tucker Kraght, Michael Komatsu,Mike Siedlik, Daniel Suskin, and Wayne McNeal, Jr. They had humble beginnings, with their conceptionresulting from three of the members getting into a car accident on their way to Washington States Days withIota Gamma at Washington State University. They currently perform and entertain the Gamma chapter and arecontinually learning how to step and dance as a team. Their goal is to strive for the highest in entertaining thechapter and creating a stronger sense of brotherhood as well as having fun along the way.Page 31

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionUNO - More than just a card game[by Kelly “Icebearer” Porter]While planning the last membershipeducation meeting for our Eta class, Iwanted to make it a little bit different. Theyhave learned about the people, the datesand the places. Now I need to be sure theyall knew what this meant. While trying to designa lesson around brotherhood and what it means tobe in a KKPsi chapter a brother gave me the ideaof sticking to what I know: UNO. Sounds crazybut when I presented an analogy between UNOand KKPsi to the Eta class I was shocked by theresponse it got. There were a few laughs, notat what a basket-case I was, but at the humorof comparing a fraternity to a card game. Thetalk was followed up by many hands of amass UNO game during which brothers werereferring to the meanings of the cards they putthem down.I would like to share this parallel with you in thehopes that it will mean something to you. If itdoesn’t, at least you will have enjoyed reading andlaughing at the crazy ramblings of a brother fromLambda Alpha!Any given deck has many different numbercards. These come in different colors anddifferent numbers. Each one can represent amember of the chapter. Everyone is different;they come from different backgrounds (theircard color) and they vary in the amount of timeand commitment they put into the chapter (whatnumber they are). If you had only two numbersthere would not be as many different plays and thegame would not be as much fun. With a whole deckof different cards there are many different peoplethat can bring experiences and ideas to the table.Skip cards signify the things that we skip. Asa fraternity we don’t drink, haze, or rush. Weknow that the game can continue and be muchmore fun without them. The Draw 2 cards help to bring all the brotherstogether. They can be bad at first, but thenbecome good when you see what you havedrawn. Take for example convention. It’sexpensive, you get very little sleep, and thereare lots of long meetings. But, you gain somuch! Friends, memories, new officers and mostimportantly, the sense of brotherhood.Reverses are the little things that make you lookat things differently. They cause a change inperspective. If you only look at things from oneperspective, clockwise, you are missing so manyopportunities. When someone switches thingsup and cause you to look from another pointof view, counterclockwise, you have a wholenew view on the situation and have gainedperspective.A Wild card is the surprises. They don’t have to begood or bad; they just simply happen. As a chapteryou have to adapt to keep playing the game. Themore you play the easier it gets to deal with thesesurprises. They no longer halt the game but aresimply a bump in the road that is soon overcome.Draw 4, ironically, is the “Brotherhood Card”.They are the bad things that happen within thechapter. They just get thrown out there but whenthey do we can learn from them. When you areforced to cope with the 16 new cards added toyour hand you develop new strategies and waysto help avoid the problem the next time it comesup. The whole game is a balance of all of the players(the number cards) and the cards thrown in thatshake things up a bit (Reverse, Draw 2, Skip, Wild,Draw 4). Without every piece the game wouldnot be as much fun or meaningful. Every timeyou play it is different. This is so much likethe fraternity that we all know and love. Ourchapter and district would be nothing without thebrothers in them and the experiences that we allgo through.Page 32

The AccentEpsilon Kappa has many traditional socialevents that we put on every year. One favoritetradition was started a few years ago, when ourDirector of Sisterhood Activities (DOSA) cameup with the Night of ?. This is an event that theDOSA plans without telling the chapter what theactivity will be. She gives simple hints to thechapter to help us figure out what we may be doing, but often sisters enter into the evening without anyknowledge of what they will be doing.Epsilon Kappa’s Night of ?[by Caitlin Nunn, Epsilon Kappa]Spring 2008 EditionThree years ago, at the first annual Nightof ?, sisters of EK went to the Ropes Course oncampus for an evening of bonding activities lead byUCLA Recreation. This was a great way for sistersto have fun, and build closer bonds. Two years ago,the DOSA planned a night of “Crazy Bowling,”where teams competed to achieve the highest scoreby bowling between their legs, backwards, lefthanded, and many other crazy ways. Althoughbowling is always fun, this new twist addedexcitement, and brought teams together.Last year, our DOSA planned a night whichfeatured dinner and rock climbing on campus. With clues like feathers (for our chicken dinner),rope (for the climbing), and bras (to symbolize thesupport we would need to give each other), mostsisters were completely lost as to what the eventwould be. When we found out we would be climbingJackie and Emily climb the wall while other sistersbelay and watch.the rock wall, many sisters got nervous and a little scared, because we had never done anything like this before. We learned a two-man (or woman) belaysystem which allowed three sisters to worktogether to achieve a safe climb to the top.It once again proved to be an amazing nightof bonding and fun!EK tries to fit inside a small PVC pipe box at Night of ? 2005This year, we are all excited tosee what our DOSA has in store for us forNight of ?. Whether it’s the anticipation ofsurprise, or the promise of a great bondingactivity, this event always seems to bemany sisters’ favorite social event. It’sa great way to hold a social event that isdifferent from usual bonding nights anddinners. No matter what the activity,Night of ? always seems to be a huge hit!Page 33

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionFuture Jamie writes to 2005 Prospective Jamie![by Jamie Nelson]Dear Year 2005 Prospective Member Me,Hey there UC Irvine Freshman Jamie, this is Future Jamie. I am writing you from April of the year2008. Guess what… you’re going to graduate in four years! I know you don’t have a major yet (spoiler alert,it’s Psychology and Social Behavior), but don’t worry, it’s all going to work out. Although… if you could paya little more attention during your Environmental Analysis and Design Class next spring, your graduate schoolapplication would really appreciate it.Right about now you should be around halfway through your prospective membership at the LambdaAlpha chapter. If it’s not already, it’s going to get pretty dramatic. You might seem a little overwhelmed, andyou might be thinking to yourself, “is it worth it?” You’re going to back up your argument with ideas such as,“Well… they’ll still be my friends even if I’m not a brother,” or, “I’ll still be a really awesome active member ofthe band even if I don’t join the fraternity… and besides, this is going to take way too much time and be far toodramatic for my liking. Also, I kind of enjoy going to bed early on Sunday nights.”This is where I want you to pay attention - do not be deceived! Banish those thoughts from your mind.Sure, things seem a little intense and out-of-proportion. And sure, it’s going to get worse. You’re going tobecome active and sit through minimum four hour meetings and chapter wide squabbles that turn in to all outwars… but you’re going to love it. Your brothers are going to become your family, and these will be the besttimes you’ve ever had.Just a heads up, the next two years are going to be absolutely terrible for your personal life. You’regoing to hit rock bottom… and your brothers are going to bring you back up. They’re going to be there for youwhen you need them, and you’re going to be just fine. The meetings are going to get shorter. The drama will drift away. You will hold the offices of both VicePresident and President, and you will learn a lot about yourself in the process. You will end up doing a lot ofwork, and spending a lot of time dealing with fraternity issues… but just to let you know, it will absolutely beworth it.Hang in there,Future JamieP.S. Don’t root for the Patriot’s during the 2008 Superbowl… you will just end up being sorely disappointed. Also, buy an external hard drive before the end of Fall Quarter 2008… your savings account will thank you.Gamma Kappa’s Mascot: The Steller’s JayThe Steller's Jay, beautiful in it's rich blue and black feathers, is a birdnative to Flagstaff. Hitting close to home, Gamma Kappa has collectivelydecided that this bird fits extremely well as our mascot. He arrived in themail mid–semester and we've proudly named him "AH!" His name originatesfrom the "For Music Sake" Western District Convention" in 2007 when allof Gamma Kappa annoyed their brother chapters around them be replying"AH!" after almost every motion passed, and pretty much whenever we feltit was appropriate…so...all the time. He is new to our chapter last semester(Fall 2007) and we've grown quite fond of him. AH! also has a facebookprofile under GK AH. Please go friend him! He loves meeting new brothersand sisters!Page 34

The AccentIn The Bond...For LifeIt’s finally here! The day you’ve waitedfour (or five or six or…) years for: Graduation! Asmany of us are getting ready to leave college andexcitedly (or, if you’re more like me, nervously)prepare to enter the real world, we realize we’releaving behind more than just midterms, essays, and all-nighters. We are leaving comfort, friends, and those we’ve come to call brothers and sisters.Though our journey as actives is rapidly comingto a close, our lives in Kappa Kappa Psi and TauBeta Sigma is long from over. Brotherhood is forlife. Sisterhood is for life.“We’re stillbrothers andsisters.”So we’re no longer actives, but we’re still brothers and sisters. It seems like an oxymoronic land of confusion, and we all react in different ways. I’ve heardstories of some alumni who were unwilling tolet go: coming to meetings, demanding a voice, telling actives what to do and how. I’ve alsoheard stories of alumni who seem to have beeneaten up by a black hole. So which camp do weside with? After some long talks with both activesand alumni, I’ve come across some helpful advicewhich may help us all find our way as we adjust toour new roles both in life and in chapter.1. Recognize and respect the current active body. It’s their chapter now. It’s their turn to makedecisions, make memories, and make mistakes.Spring 2008 Edition[by Esther Lee - Psi]4. Tell stories. What was chapter like when youwere active? What was the band like? One ofthe many things that separates a fraternity froma club is the rich sense of history. Being an alummeans we are now part of that history, and we arethe ones who can remind the new generation ofbrothers and sisters of traditions, history, and howfar we’ve come. We can really only successfullymove forward, if we know where we’ve been.5. Bring what you have to offer. What’s differentnow from when you’ve graduated? Youhave a career. You have a family. Youhave some travel experience. As analum, you have answers to those burningquestions many college students have. You haveconnections and networks that college studentshave heard so much about. Share the wealth;share the knowledge.I’ll admit—moving on is hard. And sure, these five bits of advice won’t make everythingbetter, nor will they always hold true all the time. But it’s a start. Though we may be moving onto bigger and (hopefully) better things, we don’thave to leave everything behind. The bondswe’ve formed, the memories we’ve shared, themusic we’ve made—those things are forever.2. However, advice is usually welcome. Though it anew generation’s turn of learning, growing, andbonding, the wisdom of those who have beenthere and done it is invaluable.3. Come and visit occasionally. How cool is it tohave a big bro? What about a big big bro? Well, keep stacking up the bigs and you realize howcool being in a family is. Just because we’re olddoesn’t mean we’re no longer part of a family.True, our time to have a little bro has come andgone, but our lineage continues to grow. Go meetthem! They’re waiting to meet you, too. (Samegoes for sisters!)Don’t forget, Nationals has thought ofplenty of ways for us to be active alumni, too.Find out more info on the National AlumniAssociation, Local Alumni Associations, how to become a Life Member, and moreways to contribute.http://www.kkytbs.org/alumni/index.htmlPage 35

The AccentIota Gamma and Theta Delta’s Fateful Trip to WDC[by Leanne Burns-Iota Gamma and Alex McElroy- Theta Delta]It was a dark and stormy afternoon as 4 cars setout from Pullman, WA to make the 6 hour trek to Boise. In mostly unknown territory the weather became moreand more forbidding. The leading car accidentallyfound its way off the road into a nice pile of snow;after some wait a tow truck picked up the strandedtravelers and delivered them to a hotel where theyelected to spend the night.Later on the second and third car wheretraveling down a straight and narrow road, thatunbeknownst to them, was a solid sheet of ice. Thethird car lost its footing and found the snowy ditchto the side of the road. Once the car was backon the road, and everyone was found to be ok,it was discovered that a front tire was no longerSpring 2008 Editionattached to the wheel. This wouldn’t have been a major problem if the wheel had not been frozenand rusted on. After six different people tried to remove the stubborn wheel, it was eventuallyremoved and the car was driven to the nearest town. The stranded passengers were impressed at theamount of motorists who stopped to help; one evendonated a really nifty flashlight. The two cars thenwaited for quite some time for the tow truck andwere very grateful for the help from Gamma as twoof their members drove from Boise to pick up thewrecked car’s passengers. As it turns out, the last carto leave Pullman was the first one to arrive in Boise. All told everyone arrived in one piece, sooner or later, and managed to have an awesome experience atconvention. And then there was the trip back…Lani making a snow angel next to our stranded carRay and an off duty policeman putting onthe spare tireIota Pi’s Mascot: EduardoEduardo is a relatively new member of the Iota Pi Chapter. Throughout the years we have had a numerousamount of mascots but none of them ever really stuck until Eduardo came around. Eduardo is an inflatablePurple-Striped Zebra pool toy who made her (that’s right Eduardo is a girl) first appearance at the 2007 NationalConvention in Orlando, Flordia. We figured we would always want to keep Eduardo with us even if we wereswimming the night away. Eduardo even got her own National Convention name tag that she wears on her earat all times. However, the name tag was stolen at this year’s DLC, but it was safely returned. Eduardo feelsa great sense of security being with her chapter brothers because she can wrap herself around them. Therehave been many kidnapping attempts towards her as well as a slightly tragic attempted assassination. Shewas attacked by a coat hanger at DLC but survived with a minor scar that she keeps covered with a band aid.Eduardo has a companion named Horace however, Horace is not always seen at every event. Horace is a Maletoucan. He attends every district event but only comes out if Eduardo needs a rest or if she is in trouble. Weunderstand that Eduardo looks like a fun toy but we do want to keep her protected so please be nice to her. It isoften heard that she also may have a crush on a certain mascot named Jeffrey from the Psi chapter but they donot get to spend much time together.Page 13 36

The AccentEverybody’s doing it[by Brother Azazel, KKPsi Omega]Broservice 1 has gone unnoticed for far too long.To make recognition our sole purpose of service is tocompletely miss the point, but to document our service ashistory and a resource is right on! Tomorrow, today will beyesterday and what you do will become history. If no onedocuments what we do, how will we know what to do in thefuture? Documenting broservice will create history, fuel thedistricts with ideas, and bring this district closer together.Recognition is a good thing, but some feel (andrightly so) content doing what they know is right regardlessof a special award. It is great that we have brothers sodedicated to service that they feel completely comfortablebroservicing for the love of the fraternity or sorority, butanother aspect of the broservice is helping other bros andsises in their service. Chapters rocking out with theirbroservice can send a record of their broservice over thewestern district listserv, thus creating history and sharingideas. The best are in the west? Why don’t we takeadvantage of our greatness and use each other as resources. If there is an idea that completely rocks, there is no reasonwhy the rest of the district can’t get in on it. For example, Iknow TBS omega has been doing Girl Scouts for years, butafter BO did a gigantic Girl Scouts at DLC, and Girl Scoutshas caught on like wildfire. It’s an awesome service projectand is something everyone can do.I remember DLC at Cal Poly, as a young up andcomer and very interested in how other chapters operated. Iasked the then VP of Iota Pi about their prospective process.I came back to Omega with the concept of prospectiveprojects that encompass brotherhood, music, service, andfundraising. We are now in the process of putting throughour third class with prospective projects, and I feel thequality of our membership has increased. Notice now thatOmega will have roots that go back to Iota Pi and becauseI’m documenting this event, it is now history. Thank youIota Pi!The Western District listerv is a valuable andunderutilized resource that we all have. Let’s create ties andhistory. Let’s share our broservice ideas with the district.Let’s take our district to the next level.Spring 2008 EditionEK’s Mascot: Fra FraFra-Fra became the mascot of EpsilonKappa at Western District Convention2002 in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was decidedthat our mascot should be a cow because“Happy cows come from California!”Now it was time to hunt down theperfect cow and the sisters made a tripto a nearby Target where they found ahorrid sight: dozens of stuffed animalscrowded together in what could onlybe termed inhumane conditions! Theyfound the perfect cow and decidedshe needed to be rescued from Arizonaand brought back to California whereall cows belonged! Fra-Fra enjoyedWD convention until that Sunday whenthe Sisters of the Omega chapter COWnappedher!!! EK was quick, however, tosteal Omega’s mascot Flash!!! Her timein Arizona was extended a bit longeruntil finally making her way back hometo UCLA.Fra-Fra sports a blue ribbonbow, tied onto her neck the first day shewas initiated into Epsilon Kappa. Pins inher ears mark the different chapters thathave cow-napped and taken care of Fra-Fra. By 2007, five years of life startedmaking Fra-Fra floppy…her stuffing justwas not what it used to be. However,Western District President LanceCoochyouma and his chapter saw thatFra-Fra was limp and expertly restuffedher to a new and plumb state! Now Fra-Fra is looking better than ever!Fra-Fra is truly involved in EK. Shecomes to meetings, degrees, projects, and even attends musical performanceswith sisters! In the seven years Fra-Frahas been apart of EK, she has truly beenan essential part of our sisterhood!Where’s it at?!West Side!!!1 Broservice is by no means is meant to bediscriminating against sisters. Broservice is funnyword created by BO.Page 37

The AccentSpring 2008 EditionWDC Look Back[by Anthony Barbir, EK]There’s something about eight minutes of 200 people engaging in seemingly ritualistic cult behavior that canreally change your outlook on life. I came to Western District Convention 2008 having never been to a districtevent before, and I had no idea what to expect.I would say that I’m pretty active in my sorority, doing my part in service projects, fundraising, bonding withmy sisters and brothers, and of course writing the occasional article for The Accent. I never really understoodthat TBS and KKPsi aren’t just here at UCLA. They’re everywhere. At Convention this year I met so many amazing people, many of whom I’m now honored to call greatfriends. Miles may separate us, but the bonds of sisterhood and brotherhood keep us close (as doesFacebook!). I know that wherever I go, there’s bound to be a sister or brother nearby who I can get in touchwith, and even if we’ve never met, we already “know” each other because of our involvement in these twoamazing organizations.Thank you to everyone who came to Convention. You helped shape my first district experience, and I now havea newfound love for my sorority. I love being with my best friends. I love caucusing until four in the morning.I know that being a part of this organization is the right thing for me, and I can’t wait to see where it brings mein life.Iota Gamma’s Mascot: HumperThe Iota Gamma chapter encountered Humper on a trip to Disneyland many years ago.Humper is of the rabbit variety, with a bushy tail and soft chest tuft. He enjoys wearing hisfashionable handmade suit jacket complete with coattails, bowtie and a miniature rose. He enjoyswearing his black top hat as well. Humper is always ready for 3rd Degree! On his stomach hesports “Iota Gamma” patches, which he doesn’t remember getting (he’d gotten into the vodkaagain!) Humper is named after his favorite activity: humping; which he does often to people’supper arm. The next time you’re in Pullman, WA, come see Humper, you’re guaranteed a goodtime! **However, Humper was the victim of a bunny-napping at convention! Although he doespossess excellent burrowing skills, we’d rather negotiate safe passage for him via the postal serviceor hand delivery. If you have any information as to his whereabouts, please contact the ritual chairof Iota Gamma! Here’s her e-mail: tbraford@wsu.edu**Theta Delta’s Mascot: ErynnErynn the Elephant is named for a former president of Theta Delta. An elephant was chosen asout mascot because of the admirable qualities attributed to elephants in popular culture, as wellas Horton Hear a Who, a book that has special meaning to our chapters. Elephants are known fortheir dependability and long memory. Erynn rocks the baby backpack as we have found it to bethe best way to keep her safe and secure. She sports a classy blue studded collar complete withidentification charm. She has an on-and-off-again relationship with a pair of Cougar socks. She is aclassy girl.Page 38

The AccentRollin’ With Our Homies: Lumberjack StyleGamma Kappa’s Roadtrip to Boise[By Karen “YO.(i)S.(t)HI.” Dicker]6:00p Thursday. Three cars, five Brothers, four Sisters, one mascot, and four bird-body guards leave the gasstation and embark upon what would become an all-night road trip. I suppose that we all must have known onsome level what we were getting ourselves into, but I doubt any of us realized how long fourteen hours in a caris until you’re on hour thirteen and you’re still not there. Thankfully though, there is a reason that our chaptersalways say that half of District Convention is the trip getting there.8a (Boise time) Friday. After 32 dead cats, 2 dead wolves, a dead deer, millions of bathroom and gas stops, and thirteen hours: Arrival! We rolled down the windows to the beautiful, if slightly chilly, Boise morning andput We Are the Champions at maximum volume over the car speakers. We certainly felt like champions. Onedoesn’t know the luxury of an always-available clean toilet until one has explored the wondrous restrooms thatlie off the Arizona/Utah/Idaho Interstate. It was certainlyworth it though. We didn’t go two minutes of being in thehotel without being swept off of our feet (in my case literally)with love from Brothers and Sisters from all over the District.4p (Boise time) Sunday. No more than 14 hours of sleeplater, it was time to hit the road again. This time, though, wewere charged with conversations that consisted of more thatthe daily happenings of our chapter and our lives. The entireway home the nine of us spent our time gushing about howproud we were of FIFA (that’s Scotty, the new WDMAL), ourexperience at convention, and the ways that we could bringwhat we had learned back to our chapters.6p (Boise time) Sunday. We stop to pee (not unusual) and runinto the remaining contingent of Zeta Xi, including the new WD President Katie Kozma herself, returning toSan Diego. Well, of course they joined our caravan and added to our fun. We wrote signs to our other cars a laIota Pi at DLC including “You’re cute” “Ve’y Nice, How Much?” and “Lance Never Really Existed,” stoppedat the HUGE Church of Latter Day Saints Temple in Salt Lake City, and (this was all me) tried to convinceKatie to eat a Baconator. That last one failed.8a (Arizona time). Great success! We arrive in Flagstaff alive, complete with our mascot and all of our decoys.Amazingly enough we even had time to shower and grab a bite to eat before our 9:10a classes.I suppose that I understand why every friend I have who is not a member of our District doesn’t eventry to understand why one would EVER desire to road trip from Flagstaff to Boise and back again. That’s whyI LOVE the Western District. We understand how wonderful it is to spend 14-18 hours in a car with someoneyou thought you knew. It’s situations like those that make you realize how little you really did know aboutthem, and about yourself. With Love,Karen “YO.(i)S.(t)HI.” DickerAlumni Secretary, Co-WebmasterKappa Kappa PsiGamma KappaNorthern Arizona UniversitySpring 2008 EditionPage 39

The AccentFrom the Editors of the Accent!Spring 2008 EditionTo the Members of the Western District-Thank you for allowing the Psi Chapter to publish the Accent this year. I havestruggled, as I think many of us have, with how to get involved on a District level. The opportunities seem few and far between sometimes.
