Combined Turbines<br />
Because the installati<strong>on</strong> of the power turbine also<br />
will result in an increase of the exhaust gas temperature<br />
after the turbochargers, it <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible to<br />
install both the power turbine, the larger boiler<br />
and steam turbine <strong>on</strong> the same engine. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g></str<strong>on</strong>g> way,<br />
the energy from the exhaust gas <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> util<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed in the<br />
best way possible by today’s comp<strong>on</strong>ents.<br />
When looking at the system with both power and<br />
steam turbine, quite often the power turbine and<br />
the steam turbine are c<strong>on</strong>nected to the same<br />
generator. In some cases, it <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> also possible to<br />
have each turbine <strong>on</strong> a separate generator. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g></str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>, however, mostly seen <strong>on</strong> stati<strong>on</strong>ary engines,<br />
where the frequency c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> simpler because of<br />
the large grid to which the generator <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> coupled.<br />

For marine installati<strong>on</strong>s the power turbine <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>, in<br />
most cases, c<strong>on</strong>nected to the steam turbine via a<br />
gearbox, and the steam turbine <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> then c<strong>on</strong>nected<br />
to the generator. It <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> also possible to have a generator<br />
with c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s in both ends, and then<br />
c<strong>on</strong>nect the power turbine in <strong>on</strong>e end and the<br />
steam turbine in the other. In both cases c<strong>on</strong>trol of<br />
<strong>on</strong>e generator <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> needed.<br />

As menti<strong>on</strong>ed, the systems with steam turbines<br />
require a larger boiler to be installed. The size<br />
of the boiler system will be roughly three to four<br />
times the size of an ordinary boiler system, but<br />
the actual boiler size has to be calculated from<br />
case to case.<br />
