Summer Residential Governor’s School
Mrs. D. Moulen,
Governor’s School Coordinator
Twenty-one students from Battlefield auditioned for the
Visual and Performing Arts Governor’s School on
November 2. Several students have reported that they had
positive audition experiences, so we are hopeful that
many of them will make it to the state level. We are proud
of our bobcats for taking advantage of this opportunity
and for being responsible in carrying it through.
Students who wish to apply for Academic Governor’s
Schools, must join the Fusion site (found under Class
pages—Virginia Governor’s School). Forms and applications
can be found on that site. Teacher recommendation
requests are to be submitted immediately. Mrs. Moulen
will send the appropriate forms and letterhead for narrative
references directly to the references. This is to ensure
that references receive the appropriate forms and address
the appropriate topics in narrative letters.
All applications are due December 4. The submission site
will be determined closer to the deadline.
If you have any questions about the process, please contact
Mrs. Moulen moulendl@pwcs.edu or stop by Trailer
6 before or after school to get help or to make an appointment.
Good luck!
Gifted Education Resource Teachers
All service plans have been completed and placed in the
mail. If your student is in the gifted program you should
have received one by the time this newsletter is published.
If not, please contact Mrs. Moulen (9 th grade & 11 th
grade) or Miss Durman (10 th grade & 12 th grade). We
spent a great deal of time with our 9 th , 10 th , and 11 th
graders talking about future plans and planning out longterm
coursework. It seemed to be a productive process
that we will continue to revisit and update.
The freshmen had their first full seminar on the topics of
communication and revenge. Although they will continue
to grow into the process, we were pleased with our first
11
session. It was obvious that the annotation work the students
in Mrs. Provenzano’s class are doing carried over
for the students in examining seminar text.
The sophomores were introduced to the concept of paradigms
and related it to scientific progress. Their flexibility
and maturity was appreciated as we pass through the flu
season and had to make procedural adjustments. The
growth they are showing is certainly moving in a positive
direction.
The juniors discussed the American Dream. The diversity
in the students’ views led to some interesting discussions.
We will carry the theme over to the November seminar
where we will examine pieces of American music in terms
of the qualities and identity of America. Several students
remarked how this past seminar supported an English
assignment they were given around the same time. It is
great to see those connections.
The seniors have been examining their own identity. The
GEMS students completed black box art projects which
will be on display in the front lobby sometime in
December. The project was modeled after the artwork of
Louise Nevelson. The students’ reflections were poignant
about the process of examining who they are and learning
about their classmates.
December is field trip month. We are so excited to be able
to take our learning outside the building. December 1, the
freshmen will be going to the National Cathedral to examine
cathedral architecture and the semblance or order this
architecture brings and has brought to societies through
history. December 9 the juniors will head to the
Smithsonian American Art Museum for two docent discussions—one
on American folk art, the other when they
view selections from the 1934 Public Works of Art
Project. December 15 will find the sophomores at the
Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum completing a handson
physics workshop and docent tour of the facility. The
seniors will visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum
in January to examine visual literacy and contemporary
art.
Miss Durman is now the primary contact for all screening.
