Apple Credit Union Comes to Battlefield High School Apple Federal Credit Union’s 10 th Student-Run Credit Union (SRCU) to open in Prince William County, Va. is all about opportunity. Not only will the Credit Union’s new Battlefield High School branch offer students, faculty and staff the chance to take part in a unique financial education experience, but the program will also serve as a resource to help expand the horizons of business students within the school. “Being able to have our own in-school branch of Apple Federal Credit Union is an exciting opportunity for Battlefield,” says Battlefield Principal Amy Ethridge- Conti. “This provides our students with the chance to learn about savings and financial stewardship as part of our ongoing effort to teach financial literacy. We look forward to a strong working relationship with Apple!” Reputed to be the largest, national high school student-run credit union network within the industry, Apple’s inschool program is more than a convenient location for students and employees to conduct Credit Union business. Each of Apple’s 35 SRCUs serves as an educational tool, providing students with real world financial literacy and the opportunity to explore future employment prospects, while developing an understanding of money, conceptually and in practice. Additionally, Apple’s program provides assistance with the development of financial education curriculum within the schools it serves. When possible, Apple works to partner with a school’s special education students to insure that everyone has an opportunity to gain practical financial and life skills for their years beyond high school. Battlefield is no exception. DECA With many community-wide projects underway, DECA has many upcoming events to announce. Battlefield High School is supporting the Music Corps charity at Walter Reed Hospital through the Rock to Recovery community service project. All proceeds from the project will be used to buy individualized instruments for severely wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. On November 21 st , there will be a Rock and Run 5k and 1 mile fun run to support this cause. DECA would be happy to accept any companies interested in selling their product at the run. More information and registration forms can be found at www.bhsrocktorecovery.com. Battlefield’s Key Club has partnered with DECA and will be hosting a bowling night on November 21 st from 2-5. It is $15 for shoes and games, and a 1/3 of all profit will be donated to Music Corps. So bring friends, form a team, and support Music Corps! DECA is organizing the Turkey Teacher contest again this year. Feathers will be on sale during all lunch shifts and delivered directly to the teacher of choice. The teacher that is given the most feathers will win a Thanksgiving turkey. All proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Public Relations Campaign, Paws for a Cause, has extended the deadline for Plato’s Closet clothes donations. They will be accepting clothing from now until November 19 th . Plato’s Closet will give money for each article of clothing and that money will be donated to the SPCA. SPCA is an organization dedicated “to protect domestic animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment”. HELP US HELP YOU! 15 FBLA FBLA has been busy with their community service projects. On October 25th, over 25 members traveled to Osborne High School to participate in the Germanna Region Project Ask community service project. Members joined other chapters to make children’s blankets for a local hospital. Toys and gift cards were also collected by the chapters for donation to the Project Ask charity. The third annual Faculty Tricycle Race took place on October 30th during the pep rally. For the second year in a row, Dan Evers was the Faculty Tricycle champion. All money raised during the teacher voting sales will go towards the MusicCorps, which is an charity providing specialized music equipment for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital. It's that time of the year again that FBLA will be sponsoring the Operation Turkey food drive at Battlefield High School to help support the local food shelter, SERVE, Inc. Help bring a Happy Thanksgiving to our community’s neediest families! Your gift of non-perishable food items will enable SERVE, Inc. to support the programs that give Thanksgiving baskets to more then 1,400 individuals and families. Our goal this year is to collect over 3,000 food items. Collection runs November 12-19, 2009. Please help support the annual FBLA community service project by bringing in your donation to your first block class. Together we can do it! For early dismissals, please send a note with your child (or fax us) on the morning you need an early dismissal. This allows us time to verify the dismissal, and you will not have to come into the school to wait for your child to be located!
