Message from the Principal
The school building came to life on Tuesday,
September 6, as we welcomed the start of the
2011-2012 school year. When the bell rang
to start classes, the parking lot and hallways
were clear, and students were in their first class
ready to learn. With the opening of Patriot
High School, our enrollment dropped from
almost 3,000 students to a little over 2,600.
This has helped to decrease the congestion in
the hallways and cafeteria and made it easier
for students to find their way around. I am
especially grateful to all of our student leaders
and staff members, many wearing purple
shirts for easy recognition, who assisted those
new to Battlefield in quickly navigating the
hallways and cafeteria. It is easy to see we are
off to a smooth start and will have an exceptional
year!
Our successful start is no doubt due in part
to this year’s New Student/Freshmen Orientation.
512 students were in attendance at
the event held on August 26, and they were
quickly placed into small groups led by one
of the 93 student leaders and 51 faculty volunteers.
Students were taken on tours of the
building, introduced to the administrative
team, the school counseling team, and the security
team. They had the opportunity to see
how the cafeteria and attendance office work,
were treated to a “What Not to Wear” fashion
show, and given the chance to hear about
clubs and activities they could join. Students
who attended Orientation were treated
to a free Battlefield backpack and a ticket to
enter the first home football game. Student
feedback was overwhelming positive. We are
especially grateful to our Parent-Teacher Organization
(PTO), our Athletic Booster Club
(ABC), Utz, Revolution Prep, Cici’s Pizza,
Chick-fil-A, and Herff Jones for donating
food and prizes for the event.
about the programs and resources we offer
at Battlefield. Those in attendance were
introduced to the administrative team and
our school counselors and were greeted by
PTO President Sheri McGlothlin and Athletic
Booster President Ron Fairbanks who
each spoke about opportunities for parents to
get involved in the school community. One
important point we emphasized is using the
school’s website to access the most up-to-date
information on school events, programs, and
resources. Handouts from the presentation
will be available on our website if you were
not able to attend.
We send out a special “thank you” to Kirby
Black, manager of Eggspectation, for hosting
the Battlefield staff at our annual Welcome
Back Breakfast. Kirby opened the restaurant
early and provided us with a free buffet
breakfast , allowing everyone the time to
catch up after the summer. We appreciate the
generosity of Eggspectation and hope you
will support them and all of our business
partners whenever possible.
Please mark your calendars for these important
upcoming events:
September 26: Battlefield is hosting a Col
lege Fair from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (80 confirmed
colleges)
October 4: Back-to-School Night starting at
6:30 p.m. PLEASE CARPOOL!
October 12: PSAT (The Practice SAT) for
all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
October 14: Homecoming Game
October 15: Homecoming Dance
We look forward to seeing you at the many
events and activities this school year. As always,
thank you for your support.
Not wanting to leave out parents who are
new to Battlefield, we also held a New Parent
Orientation on Wednesday, September
14. Approximately 200 people came to hear

PSAT – October 12th
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/
NMSQT) will be given to all 10th and 11th grade students at Battlefield High
School on Wed., Oct. 12th, 2011. This is a standardized test that provides firsthand
practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship
programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. PWCS
pays the testing fee for all students and we strongly encourage all sophomores
and juniors to be present on test day and do their very best. All 9th grade students
will take the Revolution Prep Practice SAT test on the same day - Oct.
12th.
Students will be given their PSAT room assignments the week before the test
and should report directly to their testing room on test day. The test will run
until approximately 11am. All seniors will be involved in senior activities and
programming while testing is underway. Please contact Eric McCaslin at mccaslew@pwcs.edu
Joseph Huddle
Specialty Programs Coordinator
This year “Parent Portal” is replacing “Edulink” to serve
as a new tool to follow your child’s progress. Due to the
change in software, all parents will need to register for a
Parent Portal account, even if they have had a Fusion/
Edulink account previously in Prince William County.
You may register for your Parent Portal account online
at http://parentportal.pwcs.edu . Once your request has
been processed, you will receive an email that will contain
your username and password. As a security measure,
you will need to print a hard copy of this email, and bring
it along with a photo ID to Battlefield HS to activate
your account
We will be accepting this paperwork from 6am-4pm every
day we are open. Please check the school website for
additional extended hours.
SAT/ACT TIMELINE
Chris McMillan
Assistant Principal
freshman year, you have the opportunity to take time to
study and prepare for the SAT/ACT. You can begin by
focusing on your studies, figuring out what subjects most
interest you, and getting involved in sports and/or extracurricular
activities. It’s also a great chance to consider
taking the PSAT next fall. Now is the time to begin researching
the time/dates of upcoming tests at www.collegeboard.com.
Sophomores (Class of 2014)
Continue to focus on your academic curriculum. If you
are taking AP classes, sign up and take the corresponding
SAT/ACT Subject Test immediately after your AP course
has ended while the material is fresh in your mind. Students
typically take the PSAT in October of their sophomore
or junior year. The PSAT is important for a number
of reasons: it is great practice for the SAT and it’s the
qualifying test for a National Merit Scholarship. A high
score could qualify you for a National Merit Scholarship.
Since the test is only administered in October, summer is
a great time to prepare for the PSAT.
Juniors (class of 2013)
Many juniors take the PSAT in October followed by the
SAT/ACT in the winter or spring. Do you have to take
the SAT/ACT in your junior year No. But it’s generally
a good idea because it leaves you plenty of time for a second
try if you’re not happy with your score. Also do not
wait until your senior year, because you will be working
on your college applications.
Seniors (class of 2012)
Senior year can be complicated because there are several
factors that can affect your SAT/ACT testing timeline.
Answering the questions below can help you figure out
your ideal testing plan:
Are you applying early decision
Are you applying to highly competitive colleges
Are your current scores far from your goal scores
Do you plan to take both the SAT and the ACT
If you have answered mostly “yes” to these questions,
then October should be the latest you take the SAT or
ACT exam. If you have answered mostly “no”, then
you can take the exam up to December of your senior
year.
Freshmen (Class of 2015)
Mrs. D. Moulen,
Ms. D Munchel,
Gifted Education Resource Teachers
It’s been an interesting start to school this year...
earthquake, hurricane, floods. Even so, we’re planning
to forge on ahead with seminars beginning the
second week of school.
Most, but not all, of our students are in clustered
Pre-AP English 9 and 10 classes and will receive
services through those class periods. Students who
are not, will receive passes to attend seminar out of
other classes. We thank Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Miller,
Mrs. Provenzano, and Ms. Starkey for agreeing to be
on our team. They are all excellent, caring teachers
who will work with your students and you for them
to have a successful year.
We are excited to have the largest enrollment of senior
GEMS classes (Gifted Education Multidisciplinary
Seminar) ever in the history of BHS. After
a roundtable discussion the first days of school it is
obvious students are coming to the class with open
minds and ready to explore the philosophical ideas
presented in the class. Since Ms. Munchel has taken
on three classes of AP Psychology, Mrs. Moulen will
teach all sections of GEMS this year.
All students will be working on their Differentiated
Service Plans in the month of September. Freshmen
will set high school, four years after high school,
and career goes. After that they will develop, from
scratch, their long-term course plans. Sophomores
and juniors will revisit their course plans especially
looking at some changes in classes that BHS is offering.
Seniors are in their final courses so they will be
focusing on their goals. Service plans will be mailed
home when they are completed.
We are beginning to look at field trip options for
all grades. Ms. Munchel will be volunteering at the
Newseum and will be exploring specific options
there. There are some interesting exhibits opening
in November at the Smithsonian American Art Museum—one
of Mrs. Moulen’s favorites. The Udvar-
Hazy Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is still
offering their Mission to Mars lab. Sophomores attended
that last year and were challenged to theoretically
create their own Mars rover keeping within
a budget and working as a group. Mrs. Moulen is
We plan to have our parent and Governor’s School
meetings in late September or early October. We usually
have the meetings after the Governor’s School
applications are released by the state. Keep an eye
on the Gifted Resource—All Grades and Governor’s
School pages (which will be activated soon) for a
date for that meeting. We encourage you to join
the All Grades page and your student’s specific year
page. Please be patient as the county is still working
to get Fusion fully operational.
If you wish to contact us, Mrs. Moulen is the primary
contact for gifted education this year. Due to a hearing
impairment that makes talking on the phone difficult,
the best form of contact for me is to send me
an email at moulendl@pwcs.edu. If I am not your
student’s teacher this year, I will forward your message
to Ms. Munchel. If you know your student has
Ms. Munchel, you can contact her at munchedk@
pwcs.edu. You can leave a phone message for either
of us with Mrs. Blackwell in the front office.
If you wish to have your child screened for the Gifted
Education program, please contact Mrs. Moulen.
I will handle most of the screening this year.
Want to be a teacher
At Battlefield, students who wish to become teachers are given two clubs to join that will develop their
skills and help them with everything from college admissions, scholarships, job shadowing, co-teaching
opportunities, and assistance with college admissions through field trips and job fairs.
Future Educators Association (FEA- Formerly Future Teachers of America)- open to all grades
According to their website, http://www.futureeducators.org/about/index.htm, this club:
“The Future Educators Association... is an international student organization dedicated to supporting
young people interested in education-related careers. Founded in 1937, FEA has helped thousands of
students develop the skills and strong leadership traits that are found in high-quality educators over the
past 75 years…
FEA continues to help:
…begin averting teacher shortages at a local level, particularly within the areas of math, science, and
special education;
Encourage students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds to enter the education profession; …
FEA is a federally-recognized Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO).”
Today’s Student’s tomorrow’s Teachers (TSTT)- Freshmen and Sophomores ONLY
TSTT is a program that targets specific students in precise circumstances. Students have to interview to
be accepted.
This program is one from PWC's "Growing Our Own" program that is being implemented to address
the teacher shortage here in our county. Teachers mentor young students who are interested in becoming
teachers. These students will be given a "jump start" at securing a job as a teacher in PWC when they go
through the program. In addition, students can receive up to 50% tuition scholarships at participating
colleges and universities.
Meeting times will be announced at the end of September. Students should pay attention to posters, announcements,
and outside room 2211. Feel free to contact Ms. Wright with any questions at wrightka@
Next Booster Meeting – BHS Mini Theatre Room #1407
The next meeting of the Athletic Boosters will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, 2011from 6:30 to 8:30
pm at the BHS Mini-Theatre room # 1407. This meeting will kick off our 2011-2012 school year; you can
join at the meeting or visit www.BattlefieldBoosters.org to join. Member or not, please plan on attending.
You can play an important role in determining how to make the athletic teams of the largest school in the
state a success!
New Concessions Lead and Need for a Secretary
The BHS ABC and all of Battlefield sends a big THANK YOU to Michele Curry for all she did to support
our student athletes as head of our Concessions Committee for the past year and more. Michele has passed
the baton to Susan Coxson as Concessions Lead. Susan is the new lead for our Concessions Committee
and has the ABC Executive Board’s approval for day-to-day decisions, but needs team-rep help to schedule
concessions for the entire year. Teams earn significant funds when parents help with concessions. Contact
Susan at BHSConcessionsscoxson@gmail.com.
KEY NOTE--SECRETARY ELECTION: Susan was (is) our BHS ABC Secretary and we will be electing a
new secretary at the September meeting!! E-mail Ron Fairbanks at Fairbanks@ieee.org if you are interested.
ABC Membership Has Its Privileges
You can join the Athletic Booster Club (ABC) for as little as $25 for the year or as much as a Super Bobcat
corporate level of $1000 for the year. Benefits vary, but always 50% of your member dues go directly to
the team you designate. Concessions and Spirit Wear coupons are included at most levels; see http://www.
battlefieldboosters.org/ under Membership for details. We recommend at least the Purple level ($100) to
get great benefits or the Bobcat level ($500) to get a family of four year-long pass to all athletic events plus
other benefits.
As a member your vote counts at each meeting on how to earn and distribute our funds to best support
BHS student athletes.
ABC Scholarship
Each year the BHS ABC provides a $2000 scholarship to one male and one female student athlete. Congratulations
to Nathan Moyer and Tessa Klumpp as the 2011 Scholarship winners. Details and application
form for the 2012 Scholarship can be found at our web site under scholarships http://www.battlefieldboosters.org/scholarships/
. The deadline for the 2012 applications is May 11th, 2012 and will be accepted
at any time before that date. These funds are paid directly to the selected students.
Concession Volunteers – Your Team Needs You !
There is always a need for volunteers at the concession stands at all home games. Team parents and friends
should contact the team representative to BHS ABC or contact Susan Coxson at BHSConcessionsscoxson@gmail.com
to volunteer. Your team will earn $100 to $400 depending on the event.
Student Athletes Need Your Help!
We need volunteers to lead or be a part of the ABC Ways and Means Committee. We also need people to
be on the Spirit Wear and Concessions committees. Email Ron Fairbanks at Fairbanks@IEEE.org if interested
or for questions or come to the meetings to express interest.
Help Us Make the TOP 10 Schools in VA!
Did you know four schools in the Northern Virginia area were among the top 10 schools that had the
greatest earnings from the Giant Foods A+ School Rewards Program These four schools earned between
$10,000 and $14,000 last year through their bonus cards. The most amazing part of this is that all of these
schools had less than 1,000 students, with the top earner having only 566! It would be a fantastic achievement
to have Battlefield High School listed in the Top 10. You can help!
Please take a moment to log onto one of our participating bonus card programs and register your card.
BHS can increase our membership in each program by asking friends and extended family, such as grandparents,
to register and specify Battlefield High School as their school of choice. Some bonus cards require
you to register each school year so check to ensure your registration is current.
The links and directions on how to log on for each program are listed below to help you easily navigate each
stores website. If you prefer, please contact Mrs. Blackwell at 571-261-4400 to provide your bonus card
number and name or stop by the bonus card registration table at our back to school night and we will help.
Do you have children in multiple schools and want to split your contributions No problem, most programs
allow you to specify multiple schools so you can share your contributions.
