Vol. IX, No. 1 November 2009
Message from the Principal
This fall has been busy for the students and staff at Battlefield.
In October we recognized over 500 students at our annual Academic
Awards Ceremony. These students, who earned the equivalent of a
3.0 or better in all of their 2008-09 classes, were honored for their
dedication to academic excellence. Earning an academic letter or a
Lamp of Knowledge pin to wear, these students are role models for
all of their peers. Congratulations to all who earned this recognition!
Your hard work is appreciated.
This year we have instituted two new programs to help our
struggling students. The I-Can! Program, developed by the members
of our Freshmen Transition Committee, is designed to assist
freshmen who are not completing homework assignments. This
fall, students are receiving after school help in English and in math.
Ms. Mary Kate Donohue (English department) and Mrs. Laura
Tillman (math department) are working with these students and are
also assisting the committee in analyzing data to measure the program’s
success. This program is part of our ongoing effort to help
freshmen transition successfully to high school.
The second program we have created is designed to provide
academic intervention to students who are not passing their courses.
This program, which is being managed by Kate Williams (art
department), offers students in all grades the opportunity to receive
after school assistance in completing assignments in a quiet, supervised
setting. Students are selected by their administrators to participate;
our goal is to assist students in being successful in their studies
and to graduate on time.
In addition to their schoolwork, many students are involved in
a variety of after school activities. Those students who are members
of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) are once
again sponsoring Operation Turkey to collect food for SERVE. Our
goal this year is to collect over 3,000 non-perishable items. Please
feel free to drop off in the main office anything you would like to
donate; we will be collecting items between now and November
19 th .
Our DECA students have been extremely busy this fall as well.
Currently they are working to raise money for Music Corps at
Walter Reed Hospital through a program called Rock to Recovery
to benefit wounded veterans with an interest in music. Students are
also involved in raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation
and the Prince William SPCA. Please read more about the charitable
work our students are involved in on page 15 of this newsletter.
Once again, our Battlefield Men’s Choir has been called upon
to perform for a distinguished group! Following last year’s invitation
to perform at the Virginia Department of Education’s Virginia’s
Teacher of the Year program, our young men will be traveling to the
Homestead to perform by invitation for the Virginia Music
Educator’s Association conference. The selections, which range
from “Danny Boy” to “Pirate Song,” are sure to impress.
Congratulations to all of our guys and to Ms. Lynn Gregory, our
choral director, for achieving this honor. It is clear our Men’s Choir
is developing a statewide reputation for excellence.
I would also like to take a moment to recognize all of our fall
athletes and coaches who have worked and played hard this season.
Congratulations to all of our fall athletes who continually push
themselves to excel while still displaying integrity and sportsmanlike
conduct. Thank you to all of our coaches, parents, and staff
who have worked to make this fall’s activities possible. Your dedication
to supporting our students is very much appreciated and contributes
to the outstanding school we are. Your involvement makes
it possible for our students to reach their goals of scholarship, leadership,
and service.
Academic Letter Award Ceremony
On Thursday, October 29, 2009 students who met the criteria for an Academic Letter Award for the 2008-2009
school year were honored at 8:30 a.m. in the Auditorium. Students who earned an Academic Letter had to have
been enrolled in at least six classes and earned a grade point average for the year of 3.5 or higher.
Battlefield High School wishes to thank Ms. Cynthia Williams, Marketing Specialist, and Qdoba Mexican Grill of
Gainesville for providing all of its 2008-09 Academic Letter winners an Award of Excellence. Through this Award,
Qdoba Mexican Grill recognizes academic excellence in its community.
************************
Battlefield High School would also like to thank Col. Cartee, Chief Woodiel and the Air Force Junior ROTC Cadets
for once again ushering the Academic Letter Award Ceremony.
School Fusion
School Fusion which hosts all PWC websites is our primary
communication tool within the school community.
Announcements, class syllabi, homework assignment,
class notes, blogs, student activities, and much more are
available on our School Fusion site. Access is provided to
our parents, students, and staff. This year all parents had
to create new user accounts and the students were given
new accounts. For information on how to create a new
account, go to www.battlefieldhighschool.org and select the
“New User Registration” link on the left. Parents will
need to obtain their child’s passcode (not password) from
the school in order to create their account. We encourage
all parents to have accounts. If you have multiple students
in PWC schools, you only need one account to access
your children’s information from each of their schools.
We ask that all users, parents and students, to update their
email address. Email addresses are used for automatically
resetting forgotten passwords, receiving class specific
information from teachers, and receiving the Daily Digest
which contains new announcements, upcoming events,
and assignments that will be due over the next 2-3 days in
your children’s classes. Please encourage all members in
the family who have an account to update their email
address. To do this, logon to School Fusion, select “My
Personal Settings” link on the left, and then the “My
Personal Info” tab. You will then see a location to enter
your email address. Remember to select the button,
“Change Information”. You will be sent an email asking
you to verify the email address. Follow the instructions in
the email to accomplish this. If you don’t receive an
email, then an incorrect email address was entered.
Google Translate Feature
A Tip to Share...
Did you know that you can click on the flag
symbols of the different countries that are
located at the bottom of your school’s
SchoolFusion Web page to view the page in
that country’s language?
SAT Information
A SAT score is typically made up of several different sections;
almost every College looks at your overall SAT
score and also your section scores in isolation.
For an optimum math score on your SAT, remember that
focusing and brushing up on your fundamentals, armed
with the standard tips and techniques that are relevant to
each question can be as important as preparing for the
final test.
You must prepare in such a way that you will be able to
create your own shortcuts and tips for yourself, tips that
will stand you in good stead when you are doing your
quantitative section of the SAT.
Never forget that the math section has been designed to
test your problem solving skills, your ability to deal with
problems of a similar nature when they crop up in real
life, and NOT merely to test your mathematical skills.
Do not spend too much time on practicing solving long
problems; aim your energies and orient yourself towards
spotting the short and often very simple solutions to the
problem that has been presented to you. This will save
Battlefield’s First Book Drive
Battlefield’s first book drive was launched by the Literacy
Committee on September 25, 2009! Thanks to the generosity
of students, parents, and staff, hundreds of quality books
and magazines poured in to support Battlefield’s schoolwide
silent sustained reading initiative: Read to Succeed.
The need for such materials will continue for the rest of the
school year; so if you have books and magazines at home
that you believe Battlefield students would enjoy and you
no longer have a use for, please continue to drop them off in
the Main Office.
Book Drive News
The Literacy Committee continues to be thrilled with the
books and magazines that staff, students, and parents have
donated to support Read to Succeed. The Literacy
Committee would like to recognize two parents in particular
for their generous contributions to the Book Drive: Mrs.
Husser, who donated a very large number of books and Mrs.
Kennedy, who donated hundreds of magazines. Mrs.
Kennedy, through her work with Cavendish Media of
Sterling, VA, will be donating magazines every month.

We are the school’s recycling center. We recycle cartridges
from all brands and styles of printers; cell phones
(no chargers or cases, please); and newspapers. By going
Attention all Battlefield High School Parents
The BHS Parent Teacher Organization began planning the After-
Graduation Celebration for the Class of 2010. They are working
hard to put together a successful and memorable event, but cannot
do it without the help of parents with students in all grade levels.
They would appreciate any support from you, your family, your
business or colleagues in making this drug and alcohol-free celebration
a success this spring.
This tradition is a final farewell to the graduates and depends on
you! The PTO is looking for someone to help head this event and
work with the great team of committed volunteers who have already
signed up to help. It takes hundreds of hands to put this tremendous
event together. Whether you can help for one hour, one day or the
entire graduation night, they would love to hear from you!
The PTO needs adult volunteers to help in the following areas:
Donations: Any donation or matching grant from your company
goes toward lowering the ticket cost for seniors. Donations can be
sent to “Battlefield High School PTO” with a check payable to
“After-Graduation Celebration.” If you are employed by a generous
company that would match your donation, please consider submitting
the paperwork to help the seniors. If you prefer to donate merchandise
in June, please, let the PTO know so they can contact you
closer to the date. Delivery/Pickup of merchandise can be arranged
in May.
Fundraisers: The PTO will need assistance for family night planning/publicity
at local establishments as well as help with soliciting
prizes, food, and monetary donations for the After-Graduation
Celebration in June. The goal is for each graduate to be able to go
home with a prize.
Parent Volunteers: The PTO needs volunteers for the fundraising
event in the spring, and After-Graduation Celebration in June. The
graduation celebration takes approximately 70 volunteers to man
crews for setup, pick-up donations, serve food, work games, and
tear-down/clean-up.
The graduation date has not been set by the PWCS School Board.
However, the plan is to hold this all-night event once again at the
George Mason Freedom Center in Manassas. Last year, 300 graduating
seniors attended this event to celebrate with their friends. The
overwhelmingly positive feedback from the graduates made this
event a great success. The class of 2010 wants to keep this tradition
going, but cannot do it without many volunteers to put it together.
If you are interested in being a part of the After-Graduation planning
committee, volunteering your time at the event, or would like
to make a donation to the event, please contact Michelle Baker at
mbakers55@yahoo.com. For more information, please visit the
PTO website http://www.bhs-pto.com/
The Class of 2010 and the PTO thanks you for your support!

The Great American Smokeout®
November 19, 2009
Since 1977, every third Thursday of November is the
American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout®
Each year, many people mark the event by quitting for the
day or even for good.
If you’re planning on quitting, here are some tips to help:
1. Decide to quit. Nobody but you can make the commitment
to give up smoking.
2. Choose a quit plan. Studies show that people are most
successful if they have support. Talk with your doctor
about a plan that’s right for you.
3. Have a withdrawal plan. There are physical and mental
hurdles to overcome when giving up nicotine. Look
into nicotine replacement and avoid people, places and
habits that tempt you to smoke.
Recognize excuses to smoke and don’t give in to them.
4. Keep it up. Think ahead to when you might be tempted
to smoke and plan how you will cope. Remember too,
that if you slip and smoke you still have the power to
renew your commitment to kicking the habit.
For more information on how to quit, visit the American
Cancer Society’s web site at www.cancer.org
Know the Difference between Cold and Swine Flu Symptoms
Symptom Cold Swine Flu
Fever Fever is rare with a cold.
Coughing
Aches
Stuffy Nose
A hacking, productive (mucus-
producing) cough is often present
with a cold.
Slight body aches and pains can be
part of a cold.
Stuffy nose is commonly present
with a cold and typically resolves
spontaneously within a week.
Chills Chills are uncommon with a cold.
Tiredness
Sneezing
Sudden Symptoms
Headache
Sore Throat
Chest Discomfort
Tiredness is fairly mild with a
cold.
Sneezing is commonly present
with a cold.
Cold symptoms tend to develop
over a few days.
A headache is fairly uncommon
with a cold.
Sore throat is commonly present
with a cold.
Chest discomfort is mild to
moderate with a cold.
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming
into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of
symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications,
can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).
2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in
the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling
with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple,
inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a
Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very
effective in bringing down viral population.*
5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make
sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in
the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate
or do any harm.
10
Fever is usually present with the
flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A
temperature of 100°F or higher for
3 to 4 days is associated with the
flu.
A non-productive (non-mucus
producing) cough is usually
present with the flu (sometimes
referred to as dry cough).
Severe aches and pains are
common with the flu.
Stuffy nose is not commonly
present with the flu.
60% of people who have the flu
experience chills.
Tiredness is moderate to severe
with the flu.
Sneezing is not common with the
flu.
The flu has a rapid onset within 3-
6 hours. The flu hits hard and
includes sudden symptoms like
high fever, aches and pains.
A headache is very common with
the flu, present in 80% of flu
cases.
Sore throat is not commonly
present with the flu.
Chest discomfort is often severe
with the flu.
Summer Residential Governor’s School
Mrs. D. Moulen,
Governor’s School Coordinator
Twenty-one students from Battlefield auditioned for the
Visual and Performing Arts Governor’s School on
November 2. Several students have reported that they had
positive audition experiences, so we are hopeful that
many of them will make it to the state level. We are proud
of our bobcats for taking advantage of this opportunity
and for being responsible in carrying it through.
Students who wish to apply for Academic Governor’s
Schools, must join the Fusion site (found under Class
pages—Virginia Governor’s School). Forms and applications
can be found on that site. Teacher recommendation
requests are to be submitted immediately. Mrs. Moulen
will send the appropriate forms and letterhead for narrative
references directly to the references. This is to ensure
that references receive the appropriate forms and address
the appropriate topics in narrative letters.
All applications are due December 4. The submission site
will be determined closer to the deadline.
If you have any questions about the process, please contact
Mrs. Moulen moulendl@pwcs.edu or stop by Trailer
6 before or after school to get help or to make an appointment.
Good luck!
From the Gifted Education Department
B. Durman and D. Moulen
Gifted Education Resource Teachers
All service plans have been completed and placed in the
mail. If your student is in the gifted program you should
have received one by the time this newsletter is published.
If not, please contact Mrs. Moulen (9 th grade & 11 th
grade) or Miss Durman (10 th grade & 12 th grade). We
spent a great deal of time with our 9 th , 10 th , and 11 th
graders talking about future plans and planning out longterm
coursework. It seemed to be a productive process
that we will continue to revisit and update.
The freshmen had their first full seminar on the topics of
communication and revenge. Although they will continue
to grow into the process, we were pleased with our first
11
session. It was obvious that the annotation work the students
in Mrs. Provenzano’s class are doing carried over
for the students in examining seminar text.
The sophomores were introduced to the concept of paradigms
and related it to scientific progress. Their flexibility
and maturity was appreciated as we pass through the flu
season and had to make procedural adjustments. The
growth they are showing is certainly moving in a positive
direction.
The juniors discussed the American Dream. The diversity
in the students’ views led to some interesting discussions.
We will carry the theme over to the November seminar
where we will examine pieces of American music in terms
of the qualities and identity of America. Several students
remarked how this past seminar supported an English
assignment they were given around the same time. It is
great to see those connections.
The seniors have been examining their own identity. The
GEMS students completed black box art projects which
will be on display in the front lobby sometime in
December. The project was modeled after the artwork of
Louise Nevelson. The students’ reflections were poignant
about the process of examining who they are and learning
about their classmates.
December is field trip month. We are so excited to be able
to take our learning outside the building. December 1, the
freshmen will be going to the National Cathedral to examine
cathedral architecture and the semblance or order this
architecture brings and has brought to societies through
history. December 9 the juniors will head to the
Smithsonian American Art Museum for two docent discussions—one
on American folk art, the other when they
view selections from the 1934 Public Works of Art
Project. December 15 will find the sophomores at the
Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum completing a handson
physics workshop and docent tour of the facility. The
seniors will visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum
in January to examine visual literacy and contemporary
art.
Miss Durman is now the primary contact for all screening.
If you wish to have your child screened for the gifted program,
please contact her at durmanba@pwcs.edu or 571-
261-4400. The deadline for the January screening cycle
is December 1. Please notify her by then if you wish to
have your child screened.

FIRST Technology echnology Challenge
ILITE Robotics is comprised of 4 FTC (FIRST
Technology Challenge) teams for the School Year 2009 –
2010. These teams are comprised of students ranging
from freshman to seniors. The first regional competition
for FTC is December 12 th .
The competition is “HotShot!”. The object of the game is
to score more points than your opponent’s alliance. Points
are earned by releasing the balls from the Ball Chutes in
autonomous mode, by shooting balls into the goals in the
center of the field (high or low) in both autonomous and
driver-controlled periods, and shooting balls into the offfield
goals during the last 30 seconds of the match. Balls
scored in the autonomous period will be counted once at
the end of the autonomous period and again at the end of
the driver-controlled period, if they remain in the goal.
FIRST Lego League Mentoring
ILITE Robotics, aside from competing in two different
robotics leagues with five Robotics Teams provides
extensive help to the First Lego League (FLL) robotics at
the elementary school level. ILITE Robotics sends over
20 high school mentors to help run Robotics Teams at 6
elementary schools. These mentors use their experience in
Robotics and Information Technology to guide both
teachers and students through the process of building,
programming, and designing their robot. They also help
the FLL members use research to solve a problem in their
community. This year’s game is called “The Smart Move
Challenge”, this challenge is related to transportation and
creative/innovative solutions to transportation problems
that are being addressed around the world. The FLL
teams have to build a robot to accomplish a variety of
missions dealing with transportation. The students also
12
have to do a research project in which they identify and
provide a solution for a specific problem that relates transportation;
it item being transported can be a person, object
or data.
Apple Credit Union
Comes to Battlefield High School
Apple Federal Credit Union’s 10 th Student-Run Credit
Union (SRCU) to open in Prince William County, Va. is
all about opportunity. Not only will the Credit Union’s
new Battlefield High School branch offer students, faculty
and staff the chance to take part in a unique financial
education experience, but the program will also serve as a
resource to help expand the horizons of business students
within the school.
“Being able to have our own in-school branch of Apple
Federal Credit Union is an exciting opportunity for
Battlefield,” says Battlefield Principal Amy Ethridge-
Conti. “This provides our students with the chance to
learn about savings and financial stewardship as part of
our ongoing effort to teach financial literacy. We look forward
to a strong working relationship with Apple!”
Reputed to be the largest, national high school student-run
credit union network within the industry, Apple’s inschool
program is more than a convenient location for students
and employees to conduct Credit Union business.
Each of Apple’s 35 SRCUs serves as an educational tool,
providing students with real world financial literacy and
the opportunity to explore future employment prospects,
while developing an understanding of money, conceptually
and in practice. Additionally, Apple’s program provides
assistance with the development of financial education
curriculum within the schools it serves.
When possible, Apple works to partner with a school’s
special education students to insure that everyone has an
opportunity to gain practical financial and life skills for
their years beyond high school. Battlefield is no exception.
Students with speciial needs who are students interested
in working with Apple will partner with the school’s
Business classes to help staff the location and serve Credit
Union members.
“It is never too early to have students thinking about and
practicing good saving methods,” says Battlefield’s
Educator Liason Theodore Proctor. “Having Apple here at
Battlefield HS will provide that opportunity and fill that
desirable, sought-after, and necessary function for all.”
FBLA
FBLA has been busy
with their community
service projects.
On October 25th, over 25
members traveled to
Osborne High School to
participate in the
Germanna Region Project Ask community service project.
Members joined other chapters to make children’s
blankets for a local hospital. Toys and gift cards were also
collected by the chapters for donation to the Project Ask
charity.
The third annual Faculty Tricycle Race
took place on October 30th during the
pep rally. For the second year in a row,
Dan Evers was the Faculty Tricycle
champion. All money raised during the
teacher voting sales will go towards the
MusicCorps, which is an charity providing
specialized music equipment for
wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital.
It's that time of the year again that FBLA will be sponsoring
the Operation Turkey food drive at Battlefield High
School to help support the local food shelter, SERVE, Inc.
Help bring a Happy Thanksgiving to our community’s
neediest families!
Your gift of non-perishable food items will enable
SERVE, Inc. to support the programs that give
Thanksgiving baskets to more then 1,400 individuals and
families. Our goal this year is to collect over 3,000 food
items. Collection runs November 12-19, 2009.
Please help support the annual FBLA community service
project by bringing in your donation to your first block
class. Together we can do it!
For early dismissals, please send a note with your child (or fax us) on the morning you need an
early dismissal. This allows us time to verify the dismissal, and you will not have to come into
the school to wait for your child to be located!
