Components of the IXA SDK for the IXP1200 l l Ethernet connections between the IXM1200 Network Processor Base Card and your chosen Windows NT and/or Linux development platforms as described in the IXA SDK Installation and Setup Guide. For remote debugging of the IXM1200 Network Processor Base Card, all configurations use the Ethernet connection. In configurations 1 and 3, video and keyboard cables from the single-board computer to your own external monitor and keyboard. Deploying Applications Most developers of IXA systems develop hardware and software simultaneously: l l OEMs develop boards and systems around the IXP1200 chip. Appliance vendors develop systems around an Intel board, the Policy Accelerator, which contains a complete IXP1200 subsystem. At the beginning of the development cycle, software developers work with a generic development system. Later in the development cycle, the software and hardware developers work together to integrate the software into the deployment hardware environment. To deploy an IXA application, you use the RAMdisk and flash utilities to create a flash image that contains both the application code you developed and an embedded Linux operating system. Depending on your deployment configuration, you download this image to the flash in the IXP1200 in the factory, or create an initialization or boot procedure to download it. Components of the IXA SDK for the IXP1200 The IXA SDK is designed specifically to develop IXA applications. It contains the tools, libraries, drivers, and other runtime elements that you use to develop, debug, and deliver embedded network applications. It also contains efficient languages for describing and classifying packets and for defining communication interfaces. The IXA SDK includes the following elements: l An application programming interface, the IXA API, which includes the following: — Object Management System (OMS) services library, which provides C support for interobject communication, ACE creation, and control of traffic flow. — The Action Services Library (ASL) core services, which provide C and C++ support for the packet-handling mechanism, and C support for data sets, event scheduling, and error handling. — The ASL application services, independent libraries which provide C and C++ support for efficient implementation of common packet-manipulation tasks, such as TCP/IP manipulation and reassembly, NAT, string searches in packets, ARP processing, and so on. These application building blocks speed development time. Additional libraries are made available from time to time. — The microACE Resource Manager API, which provides management services for microACEs and microengines and access to shared memory.
