Fibber McGee Breaks Record!
Proceeds from the 2013 Fibber
McGee sale totaled $1665 - a
new record! The third annual
sale, which was hosted by the
volunteers of the Village Shop on
August 2, raised funds to support
the Residents’ Assistance Fund.
“Just my size!” exclaims
Helen Caines, Martha Kirby were delighted
Co-chairs Helen Caines and
co-chair.
with the response from residents
to their request for donations,
and with the support of residents and staff
who came out to shop. “Everyone was just great
– the donors, residents, staff and volunteers,” exclaimed
Helen. “We couldn’t do it without them,”
added Martha. Other Village Shop volunteers who
assisted with the sale included Diane Crichlow,
Judy Culley, Chris Hollingsworth, Molly Johnson,
Margaret Keely, Mary Alice Love, Jo McCall, Phyllis
Many folks at Arbor Acres could easily say about Dr.
Eben Alexander that “we knew him when....”
A few can say they knew him when he went to
church at Centenary or went to school at Summit.
Some can say they knew him simply as the son of
resident Betty Alexander and the late Dr. Eben Alexander,
Jr.
Today, almost everyone can say they know him as
the author of Proof of Heaven, an amazing account
of his near-death experience.
Dr. Alexander has been on the cover of Time magazine,
has been a featured guest on Oprah’s Super
Soul Sunday show, and this month will be sharing
his experience with us. He will offer two similar
presentations, exclusively for the Arbor Acres community,
so mark your calendars.
See Tuesday, September 17 for more information.
“It’s an extraordinary set of skins,” says model Judy
Culley to volunteer Chris Hollingsworth and cochair
Martha Kirby.

aging people and what we can do to curtail it. There
New Usher Committee Established
by Resident Council
Will be called the Green Circle Committee
The group, known as the Green Circle Committee,
will help people find seats, help with walkers, and
distribute programs as necessary at both planned
and unplanned events.
In response to the increasing number of memorial
services and other events being held at Arbor
Acres, the Resident Council has established a new
committee for, as chairperson Jim Walsh laughingly
calls it, “domestic crowd control.”
Resident Meetings This Month
Wonder what a “rover” does? Want to compliment
your housekeeper or maintenance team member?
Or do you have a question about why something is
done a particular way and perhaps have a suggestion
for improving it? If you’ve got something on
your mind, Lurana Day wants to know!
As Chief Operations Officer, Lurana oversees dining
services, facility services (housekeeping, laundry,
maintenance), continuing care, nursing, recreation
and wellness, and transportation. This month she’s
holding meetings to share information with you
and to hear your comments about what’s working
and what could be improved
in any of the above-listed
areas. Check your cubby for
the schedule.
“We’re looking for a few good men - and women
- to ensure that arrival and departure runs smoothly,”
explains Jim. “In church this might be known as
the Usher Committee, but here
we’re referring to it as the Green
Circle Committee because members
can rotate serving as their
schedule permits.”
If you would like to serve on the
Green Circle Committee, please
call Jim Walsh at 602-2834.
New Names for
Two Areas on Campus
Dignity. Engagement. Potential and possibility.
All these are attributes Arbor Acres holds dear.
As our evolution continues, what once seemed
entirely appropriate - referring to areas on campus
by the services residents require - now seems a disservice.
After careful consideration, Fitzgerald Health Center
has been renamed Fitzgerald Place, and Memory-
Care will be called Arborview.
Both names were selected to convey warmth, respect
and continued personal growth.
Absentee ballots must be requested in writing from
the Board of Elections not later than 5:00 PM on
the Tuesday before the election. The fastest way to
get your absentee ballot is to apply for it online.
Visit www.co.forsyth.nc.us/elections
or call 703-2800.
Arbor Acres will provide transportation to our voting
site, which is nearby Hanes Community Center
(home of Twin City Stage). Look for details in the
October Lamplighter.
Though renamed Fitzgerald Place, the building
continues to honor Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald and his
wife, resident Frances.
