the hottest
summer event
ever!
“Aloha” was the word of the day
for June 4th as many Valencia
Lakes residents joined in on a
night of tropical fun, festivities,
and great food and entertainment.
The event featured live music
by Blair Entertainment, including
an authentic Hawaiian dancer
who helped the men shake their
bottoms. Other highlights hli h included d the games, brilliant decorations, Hawaiian food
and, of course, the after-hours dancing with DJ John the Hat Man. The weather was
wonderful, the event was spectacular and a great night was had by all. The success of this event would not have been possible without t our
wonderful volunteers, the Lifestyle team and the Cafe staff whose time and services made this an incredible and memorable occasion!
GONE TO THE
DOGS!
Valencia Lakes held its first ever Dog Show on April 9th. Dog owners
took pictures with their pooches before the contest. Each owner
walked their dog down the
runway for
spectators to
view and vote. Everyone in
attendance was able to have
a free lunch catered by Chef
Michael. With the crowd’s
involvement, we were able to
crown our top three dogs of
Valencia Lakes.
THE SPICE
OF LIFE!
This year’s Variety Show,
which took place on April
23rd, had a record crowd of
342 residents and friends. All
of
the acts gained approval of
the audience
and even some of the spectators were pulled on stage
to perform at the last minute. We look forward to seeing next
year’s participants and performances. Thank you to everyone who
worked very hard in creating an amazing event.

SAVER’S CORNER
BY BOB CORIN
Somebody once said, “Buying quality at low cost equals value.”
Value is what we look for in our club. We have promoted value
with the many established business partners. A vendor listing
can be found at the Clubhouse or by calling the phone numbers
listed below.
If you live in VALENCIA LAKES,
phone and save.
NOTE: The Buying Club is a group of volunteers that, in good faith,
research to find reliable and reasonable vendors for our community.
We are NOT to be held liable or responsible for any wrongdoing.
Your sole remedy for dissatisfaction with these vendors is to stop
using their services. Should you have any questions, call:
HAVE YOU MET?..
SHELLY & HARVEY CANTOR
Shelly and Harvey moved here
from Boynton Beach. Although they
still have a home in Greenville, SC,
they choose to live year round here
at VL. Prior to retirement Harvey
owned a large insurance company
in St. Louis, MO. He worked with
President Clinton and was involved
in politics in the past. Shelly was
in public relations and even had
a client booked on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She also owned a
couple of restaurants in Coconut Grove, FL. Shelly now makes
and sells life-like dolls that look like real babies. Harvey is a
photographer, involved in the photography club. Together they
have 12 grandchildren and six great grand children.
MARSHA & BYRON FRESO
After over a year of searching for the
right “retirement” community in Florida,
Marsha and Byron Freso moved into VL.
Marsha is originally from Detroit, MI,
and Byron hails from Guyana, South
America. They met and married in
Atlanta, GA, 31 years ago. After living
there for over 25 years, they were ready for
a change. Since moving in on March 17,
the Freso’s have become avid pickleball
players. Within a few weeks of moving in, Byron performed in the
Variety Show in April. He has also joined the Valencia Singers.
Marsha served as a committee member for the recently held
luau. Marsha took second place in the pickleball match during
the Memorial Day sports tournament with teammate Dave
McElhiney. They look forward to becoming more involved in
community activities and meeting more Valencia Lakes residents.
CLUB SPOTLIGHT
GOLF CLUB OUTING By Jay Solow
On the 21st of March, the Valencia Lakes Golf Club had its first full field tournament. The Scramble format
was contested by six full foursomes (24 players). A fantastic time was had by all. For those of you who are
not in the club, but do play golf, you should surely consider joining us. The results of the tournament are as
follows; First place was the team of David Hinds, Erv Daigle, Fran Spisak, and Larry Chalmers. A whopping
63 was the winning score. Second place went to the team of Yime Otani, Ray Haywood, Bob DiPentima, and Harry
Watson. Their score was a close 64. The third place team, with a score of 65, consisted of Bill Barreau, Ed Pichette, Sal Scrozzo, and Bill
Chalmers. Congratulations to all the winners. The quality of the golf was extraordinary. One of our founding fathers, Johnny Springer,
couldn’t play due to surgery. The tough old colonel is now home from the hospital and doing great. He was missed very much by all.
FASHION SHOW HOSTED BY THE WOMEN’S CLUB By Patty Hibsher
On May 6, Valencia Lakes Women’s Club hosted our second annual fashion show. The clothing
and all the accessories were presented by Accessories & More, who did a great job of bringing
clothing to fit all sizes. Our volunteer models looked fabulous in all the outfits they wore. The
turnout for this event was terrific, thanks to our dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to
ensure that each event is successful. Our chef Michael and the Valencia Lakes bistro catered
the luncheon. As an added attraction, we had a very special guest; our very own, “Miss Junior
Wimauma”, decked out splendidly in an original designer gown that fit her superbly. She
greeted all of our attendees with her marvelous wave and walked down each aisle with a lovely
smile for everyone. The proceeds from this most enjoyable fund raiser have been earmarked
for next year’s scholarships.
“KING OF CANNOLI DELIZIOSI”
The “royal” link goes as far back as 1897 when Vince’s grand-father, Nino Genovese, a first-class baker,
received the prestigious “Golden Plate Award “from Italy’s King V. Emanuale for his Cannoli Deliziosi.
Historically, the Genovese baking trade started in the year circa 1841, when Nino’s father, Domenico
Genovese, moved from Sicily to Naples to attend Italy’s most famous culinary training school. Later,
with his son, Nino, he established the most prestigious restaurant in the Naples region. Here, all nobles
from other regions converged to indulge in the world’s famous Cannoli Deliziosi while listening to the
melodies of “O Sole Mio” and “O’Marie” under the exciting and romantic moonlight in Positano.
In the year circa 1901, Nino moved from Naples to Calabria and from his arranged
marriage with Arcangela, three sons were born. The youngest one, Luigi (Vince’s father), took
over his father’s baking business. After an arranged marriage with Carmela, Luigi fathered 10
children. When Luigi passed away, each of his children received a different recipe as part of
their inheritance. Vincent received the Cannoli Deliziosi recipe. Neither Vincent nor any of
his siblings pursued professional baking.
In the midst of his Italian Consular activities, Vince finds time to bake the Cannoli Deliziosi
for his new wonderful friends at Valencia Lakes. He has no direct heirs and upon his celestial
ascension, his recipe will be auctioned and its proceeds will be donated to the SPCA as
requested by his lovely wife Linda.
TRAVEL CLUB VISITED RINGLING By Arlene Donnellon
In June, the club offered a trip to Ringling Museum in Sarasota. We all remember going to the circle
in our youth and all the fun we had watching the many acts performed in front of us. Well our trip
to Ringling Museum in Sarasota reminded us of those days. On June 9, the Travel Club went to
John and Mable Ringlings, 20-acre waterfront property in Sarasota, FL. We had an enjoyable day
visiting the many exhibits on the property, including the Circus Museum which documents the
circus’ past to today. The Museum of Art, built by John Ringling to house his personal collection
of masterpieces; the Ringlings’ dazzling mansion, a tribute to the American Dream, reflecting the
splendor and romance of Italy with 56 incredible rooms filled with art and original furnishings;
and the grounds and gardens were a treat to see including the Rose Garden, as well as Mables
Secret Garden. We all enjoyed a day at one of the loveliest and interesting places in Sarasota.
DRAWING WITH PEN AND INK —
ALL LEVELS
including stippling, various types of
hatching and scrumbling. You will also
become familiar with using a technical
type pen as well as working with an old
fashioned dip quill pen. Please bring your
own sketchpad to practice on.
Classes will be held every Tuesday
at 1pm
Cost: $8 per class
LEARNING SCRATCHBOARD —
The scratchboard artist uses a sharp
instrument to scratch the black surface
of the board and reveal the white surface
below. Color can then be added to the
piece if desired.
Supplies for this class will be available
before classes begin.
Classes will be held every Tuesday at 3pm
Cost: $8 per class
waterproof drawing ink, penholder,
two pen nibs, a technical type pen.
“OPEN STUDIO”
Open Studio class is designed for all levels, from the absolute
beginner, who claims they cannot even draw a straight line, to the
recreational or experienced artist. The three hours of Open Studio
will be available to anyone wanting to learn Watercolors & Colored
Pencils and allow students to explore their own interests with much
personal direction from the instructor. Basic principles of color,
drawing, and paint application will be introduced and learned as
the student’s work progresses. It is
encouraged that prospective students
contact Nava Mentkow, Valencia
Lakes Art Director, directly at
navajudith@gmail.com, to discuss
what they hope to accomplish in the
class and what mediums interest
them. It is Nava’s philosophy, as an art
instructor and artist, that anyone can be taught to paint or draw. It
is a matter of teaching someone to see.
Date/Time: Every Monday in the Art Studio
Time: 12pm-1:30pm; 1:30pm-3pm
Cost: $8 per 1.5 hour class
