haunted theme party. Witches, skeletons, and a fog machine creating a spooky effect
greeted partygoers. Creative displays were scattered about. At one location
there was a library with a cobweb-covered skeleton reclining on a sofa as
well as cobwebs and spiders covering a bookcase and two chairs. At another,
two fellow skeletons were having drinks at a table, while the butler was
standing by with Jell-O shots. At a third, there was a graveyard, complete with
an open casket and a skeleton trying to escape.
Costumes, ranging from Cleopatra to Bob the Chinese Drywall Inspector, were very
amusing and creative this year. We even had our very own Occupy Valencia Lakes Protestor!
Party revelers danced to popular songs spun
by Party 101 Productions DJ. The best costume
prize was won by Bob the Drywall Inspector, and
Barbara Ziegler won the grand prize, two tickets
to the New Year’s Eve gala.
EXCITING EVENTS DURING THE
LAST QUARTER OF 2011
The Halloween Party was a hit with the theme of the Haunted
Mansion. Thank you to the committee which consisted of
Marsha Sellars, Marie Chandler, Nell and Jim Bieser and
Jeanne Laffer. In November, the Zumba party and the Holiday
Bazaar were the highlighted events. The first weekend in
December kicked off the holiday season with a Holiday
Cocktail party, the Holiday Bingo and the first ever Valencia
Lakes’ Amazing Race. Combined, these three events brought
in over 500 participants. A big thank you to Neal Rosen for
planning the missions for the race.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT
VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S CLUB AUCTION
The Valencia Lakes Women’s Club Live and Chinese Auction was Sunday,
October 22. Residents and non-residents had a fun-filled afternoon trying to
win exciting gifts such as vacations, dinners, theatre tickets, luggage, art work,
household items, and gift certificates. All proceeds from the Auction will go
towards the Valencia Lakes Women’s
Club College Scholarship Program for
outstanding, high-achieving seniors
from our local Lennard High School.
Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 this
year for scholarships, and we raised
over $6500.00 at the auction.
Thanks to everyone
who attended and
supported this fund
raiser. EVERYONE
WAS A WINNER!
PATRIOTIC PRIDE AWARD
At the VA luncheon celebrated on November 11, jointly with the VL Ladies
Club, the VA Military Club’s emissary, Vincent Genovese, was delighted to
announce that the number of flags displayed on Veterans Day in our community
was 132 compared to 87 displayed on July 4, marking a 51% increase. The
neighborhood that displayed the largest number of flags related to the occupied
homes for the year 2011 was Sapphire Sound Dr.
Vincent Genovese presented The PATRIOTIC PRIDE AWARD to William
Schaeffer. In accepting the award on behalf of Sapphire Sound Drive, Bill
Schaefer, Lt. Col. UASFR Congressional Liaison Officer, said: “As an officer in
the United States Air Force for 27 years and now a proud resident of Valencia
Lakes, I have always viewed our flag with a great deal of pride, respect and
reverence. To me the displaying of the American Flag is one of the most
important ways we as citizens can show our pride in our country and recognize
the sacrifices of those individuals who have helped make America the great
country it is today. The Patriotic Pride Award seems to be another way for those
residents in Valencia Lakes who may wish to do so to participate.”
VALENCIA LAKES WOMEN’S
CLUB TEA
It was 11/11/11 at 11 o’clock! What a day to
honor our military veterans, and that is exactly
what the Valencia Lakes Women’s Club did at
their annual Tea Party! The Social Hall was
transformed into a magnificent Tea House as 26
women worked together to embellish tables with
the finest china, linens, and colorful decorations.
The guests were served scrumptious sandwiches,
scones, and pastries prepared by our own residents.
The cash donations from this event will enable the
Women’s Quilters Club to purchase fabric and
supplies to complete the 50 handmade quilts being
made for the Haley VA Hospital, where disabled
American Veterans receive crucial medical care.
Diana Raphael extended our caring by bringing all
the leftover food (and there was a lot) to the EMT
volunteer station in Sun City.
Thanks to everyone who attended and supported
this function. Without your participation, the
Valencia Lakes Women’s Club could not accomplish
their humanitarian goals!
Vincent Genovese, presenting the
PATRIOTIC PRIDE AWARD to
William Schaeffer. The award is being
displayed in the Clubhouse lobby.
TRAVEL CLUB VISITS THE RED ROSE INN By Carol Lewis
On November 12, 36 residents visiting the Red Rose Inn in Plant City were transported back in time as they listened to the sounds of
the 50’s by such artists as The Platters, Bobby Darin,
and Chubby Checker to name a few. As “Heavenly Night was Falling,” we were able
to “Yakkity Yak” amongst ourselves and reminisce about the dawn of rock and roll.
We have Arlene to thank for organizing such an enjoyable and nostalgic evening.
As we waited on the bus for folks to arrive, she read a poem that put us in the mood
for the evening ahead. Then to test everyone’s memory, Arlene called out titles of
some songs from that era, while the rest of us tested our memory to name the artist.
It wasn’t long before we were shaking, rattling, and rolling to the sounds of the 50’s.
Classics like “Love Potion #9” and a truly awesome version of ‘Unchained Melody”
brought everyone to their feet.
