VALENCIA LAKES GLOBAL CONNECTIONFROM LES & MANDY — OUR RESIDENTS FROM IRELANDWe are Les and Mandy Martin and live on Sandy Brook Circle. We also have a home inNorthern Ireland. Our hometown of Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim is historically significantdue to the Norman Castle founded there in 1180 by Sir John De Courcey, who alsoestablished St. Nicholas Church of Ireland Church. Also, President Andrew Jackson’sfamily were from Carrickfergus. The US Rangers were based here during World WarII. The American Privateer and one of the founders of the US Navy, John Paul Jones, fought the British off our shores in Belfast Lough.Ireland has approximately 6 million inhabitants, 4.5 living in the South (Republic ofIreland) and 1.5 in the North. Ireland has 32 counties encased in four provinces: Ulster,Leinster, Connacht and Munster. In 1922 these counties were divided North and Southfollowing the Irish uprising against the British. As a police officer I have lost many friends and colleagues as a result of the “troubles”.Life in Northern Ireland can be quite negative with political squabbling and people areoften suspicious; however, we are learning to live together. Our journey to Valencia began in 1995 when we visited Disney World and Key Largo. After several visits we ended up standing in the Valencia Tuscany Model in early 2008.Mandy told me, “This is my house!”Our lives in Ireland are somewhat different to Florida. There the weather is generallyhit or miss, with very few outdoor pools. Fuel prices are more expensive, with thecurrent average of £1.20/$2.70 perlitre. Housing prices are double, butclothing and food are the same. Wepay for satellite television. We also pay the government for local services such as water, garbage removal, and schools—as well as paying our US taxes. We have met some fantastic people here at Valencia Lakes whom we regard as friends, helping us feel right at home. But like all “vacation” visitors subject to the 90-day immigrationrules, we are hoping for eventual legal resettlement in Florida by 2012. We wish you all welland look forward to seeing everyone at the end of July. The photographs show Carrickfergus Castle (right) and our family (above). Our son Andrew (next to Les)is an officer in the British Royal Navy and Adam is a student at Strathclyde University, Glasgow,Scotland. Both our sons agree that we made the right choice in buying at Valencia Lakes.LIFE EVENTSBIRTHDAYSJULY2 Ellen Light3 Bruce Berman4 Sandie Papa7 Elizabeth Reed8 Ralph Hamp9 Dave Sigler12 Myrna PeckChris ReichardtAndrea Sellers13 Ely Capo14 Barbara Beyer15 Walt Britt16 Beverly CampbellStan Roberts21 Carrie JenkinsBrenda Raysbrook25 Donald GabinJohn Lanham27 Doug FrenchCarrie JenkinsBarbara Wax29 Carolyn AverillAUGUST1 Marie Vasile2 Judy Zirofsky3 Gary Spieler4 Sherry Gelfand5 Art KilbournAndrea Markowitz6 Bill Luthke7 Steve Cohen8 Gary Spieler9 Genie Harrison10 John Doellinger12 Ervin Daigle13 Judi Cavalier14 Pat Baker15 Scott Allen17 Nick Fazio18 Joyce Kennedy20 Margo Ooft21 Denise Mineri23 Denise Pagoaga24 Eileen West25 Linda Berman27 Nancy Malveaux28 Elaine Sheehan29 John CalderonEllen GabinSEPTEMBER1 Carol Franch3 James Acierno4 Michael Nelson8 Larry Shaw13 Fran Pine17 Sunnie BrunhildEd MarkowitzYale Peck20 Pauline BowersKeith Schneider25 Joe CapoPatricia Sluder27 Virginia Hernandez29 Naomi Larino30 Kay LaughlinSusan TerkhornCondolences to: Don Houch on the loss of his wife, MaryANNIVERSARIESJULY2 Barbara & Al Wax8 Mandy & Les Martin9 Sue & Nick Fazio • Fran & Ervin Daigle12 Barbara & Francis Spisak15 Jan & Bob Howerter17 Margo & Hans Ooft24 Sandie & Dom PapaAUGUST1 George Ringham & Susan Doetsch2 Janet & Bob Corin • Chris Reichardt & Andrea Sellers7 MJ & Yime Otani21 Norma & Walt Britt28 Fran & Alan PineSEPTEMBER3 Bonnie & Ed Pichette5 Addie & Dave Unterlack6 Sandra & Arnold Abramson9 Ann-Mary & Ed Kapusta28 Debby & Steve CohenVALENCIA LAKES 10
