Tutor and Foreign Students Office
Japanese Language Class
The University adopts a system whereby every
international student is assigned a tutor who can give
him / her individual extracurricular assistance on
matters concerning study or research as well as
university procedures and other formalities. The tutor to
be assigned is a graduate student who is majoring in the
same field of study. The foreign students officers of the
department, who assigns the tutor after consultation
with the research advisers, may also be approached for
advice on general matters including housing
accommodations.
Housing Accommodations
A limited number of single rooms and family units in
private company dormitories and public housing are
leased to international students upon recommendation
by the department. The department adopts a waiting list
system for each type of accommodation, as the number
of rooms or housing units available through this
endorsement procedure is uncertain.
The department started to offer Japanese Language
courses in April 1982 to help international students
acquire practical skills in the language. Although
Japanese capability is not required in the graduate
study programs, students new to Japan are encouraged
to take the basic Japanese course to help them enjoy
everyday life in and out of the university during their
stay in Japan.
Basic Japanese is a six-month course which meets
twelve hours per week. This course aims at developing
basic skills in speaking and listening as well as in
reading and writing Japanese. In addition, more
advanced courses such as Japanese Conversation and
Reading are offered. Spouses of students are also
welcome to enroll in these courses.
The courses start in October and April each year after
the arrival of new students. These courses are given by
instructors qualified to teach Japanese as a foreign
language. Parties and speech meetings are occasionally
held in addition to the regular classes. The Japanese
class also serves as a place for social interaction and
occasionally for personal counseling for international
students.
The University of Tokyo also offers
various services to support the
international students.
