OVERVIEW OF GRADUATE PROGRAM The University of Tokyo is a national institution for higher education and research, comprising a College of Arts and Sciences, ten Faculties, fifteen Graduate Schools with fifteen Divisions including the Graduate school of Engineering, and eleven Research Institutes. It is a leading institution, and the oldest Japanese university. The total number of students enrolled at present is about 28,000. The graduate program at the Department of Civil Engineering offers advanced professional training leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy (Civil Engineering). The Department does not offer, in principle, non-degree programs or research fellowship. The fields of study include : • Bridge and Structure; • Coastal Engineering; • Concrete Engineering; • Construction Management /Infrastructure Systems; • Earthquake Engineering; • Geotechnical Engineering; • Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering; • International Project; • Landscape Planning and Design; • Regional Planning and Surveying; • River and Environmental Engineering; • Spatial Information; • Traffic Engineering; • Transportation Engineering and Infrastructure Planning; and • Urban Earthquake Disaster Mitigation Engineering. The teaching staff comprises approximately forty faculty members from Department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Industrial Science, and the Earthquake Research Institute. The graduate program includes specially designed courses for international students, in which class instruction and research supervision are given in English and/or Japanese. Master's thesis and doctoral dissertation are accepted in English. Japanese language courses are also offered for international students and their spouses. Currently, the number of international students registered in this program is close to ninety, which is comparable to that of Japanese graduate students of the department. Students come from more than twenty different countries in five continents. Most of them are on full scholarship grants. Most students from abroad enroll in October, when the fall-winter semester starts. The spring-summer semester commences in April, which is also the beginning of the Japanese academic year. Research achievements of graduate students and faculty members are regularly published in renowned national and international journals. The department compiles reprints in an annual volume of Collected Papers, which is distributed to major universities worldwide.
