ADMISSION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS
To be eligible for admission to the Master's course,
applicants should hold a degree from an accredited
institution comparable to the bachelor's degree
offered at the University of Tokyo and have
sufficient undergraduate training to undertake
graduate study in civil engineering. For admission
to the doctoral course, applicants should hold a
Master's or other equivalent degree comparable to
that is offered at the University of Tokyo.
Admission to the Graduate School is granted by the
Graduate Council of the University upon recommendation
of the department. The Department of Civil
Engineering bases its decision on granting the
recommendation on the applicant's academic
qualification as indicated in his/her official
transcripts from the institutions where the applicant
studied or is studying and letters of recommenddation.
Other academic achievements, such as
scholastic honors or prizes are also considered.
Candidates applying from abroad are not required to
take entrance examination. However, An applicant
who has been already studying in Japan must take
written examinations.
To be placed on the short list, applicants have to be
among the top group in academic attainment at few
most accredited institutions in each country. Since
the academic level of the program is high and the
number of international students that can be
accommodated is limited, only the most qualified
applicants are admitted.
The department admits students in October and
April, when the fall-winter and spring-summer
semesters begin. However, the entrance
examinations for admission in either April or
October are held at the university only once a year,
in September. Those applicants who are required to
take the examinations should consult the Entrance
Examination Desk (gs@civil.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp) well in
advance.
Due to high living cost in Japan, the department admits,
in principle, only those qualified applicants who have a
sufficient financial support. The department can arrange
roughly 30 scholarships for its applicants every year.
Prospective candidates can also apply for scholarships at
Japanese Embassies in their home countries. Please see
the section Financial Aid for details. Note that the
department can arrange scholarships only for those
applicants hoping to enroll in October.
Application for Admission
The following documents must be submitted.
1. Pre-registration to FSO
2. Completed application form;
3. Official certificate of degree or verified copy of
diploma, and official transcript or marks certificate,
written in or translated into English, from each
college-level institution previously or presently
attended
4. Two confidential letters of recommendation.
A certificate of English proficiency, such as score of the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), is
desirable.
