Dear priests, deacons, religious brothers and sisters, pastoral
directors, pastoral associates, staff of offices, and agencies of the
archdiocese
As we move into Lent, there are a number of important events taking
place including the Rite of Election on the First Sunday of Lent,
March 1, in the Cathedral at 2.30pm for all catechumens across the
Diocese except where delegated locally.
Since the introduction of the RCIA following Vatican II, many
thousands of adults have been welcomed into the Church. Thank you
to all in the parishes this year who have been preparing their
catechumens for this time.
Project Compassion kicks off this month with three launches – at a
childcare centre, school and parish – ensuring the whole community
embraces Caritas Australia’s major fundraising campaign for the year.
The first focus group for the Leap Ahead project was held in early
February for representatives of a broad cross-section of the Church
and we look forward to more discussion and consultation as part of
the development of a major restructuring plan for the A r c h d i o c e s e .
We welcome Sue Kennedy-Branford from education to the Leap
Ahead working team.
As we face the challenges and opportunities of the times in which we
live I am delighted that Heather Carey has joined the senior leadership
of the Archdiocese.
Heather took up her position as Chancellor in the Archdiocese on
Monday, February 9. She will provide leadership in the vital area of
strategic planning and will work closely with Cathy Whewell and
Jane Swift as three Chancellors working as part of the Leadership
Group of the Archdiocese.

CLERGY MATTERS
Clergy Significant A n n i v e r s a r i e s
We give thanks for the following priests who are
celebrating significant anniversaries.
Celebrating 40 years of ordination on March 22 is
Father Gabriel Micallef.
On March 19, Father Joseph Molon celebrates
5 0 years of ordination.
On February 1, Bishop Greg O’Kelly celebrated the
50th Anniversary of his entry to the Jesuit
c o m m u n i t y.
I personally celebrate 25 years of ordination to the
priesthood on March 3.
Please pray for all of our clergy and in particular for
those we are acknowledging this month.
Papal blessings
To obtain a Papal Blessing through the A p o s t o l i c
Nunciature, it is necessary that a written
recommendation from the parish priest or a priest
who knows the beneficiaries, and signed personally
by him be forwarded to the Apostolic Nunciature, via
the A r c h b i s h o p ’s Office.
Requests should be addressed to Maureen Wa t t s ,
O ffice Manager, A r c h b i s h o p ’s Office, 39 Wa k e f i e l d
Street, Adelaide SA 5 0 0 0 .
The letter of request should provide the full names of
the beneficiaries of the Blessing, the occasion and
the date of the occasion.
If it is for a marriage, it is strongly advised that the
name of the church should also be included.
The offering for a Papal Blessing is $60 to be sent at
the time of the application. The cheque is to be made
payable to The Apostolic Nunciature.
Scrolls/parchments can take up to eight weeks to
a r r i v e .
Mass times
A number of parishes have had changes to their
Mass times. Please visit the Diocesan website at
w w w. a d e l a i d e . c a t h o l i c . o rg.au for up-to-date Mass
times. The new Mass times will also be published in
the upcoming edition of The Southern Cro s s .
Episcopal Liturgies
Just a reminder that for all liturgies at which
Archbishop Wilson, Bishop O’Kelly or Monsignor
Cappo are officiating, a copy of the liturgy and
running sheet must be sent to the A r c h b i s h o p ’s
O ffice for approval at least six weeks prior to the
event.

and running sheet are approved, you will receive
notification from the A r c h b i s h o p ’s Office, allowing
you to print Mass booklets etc.
Parish information
Due to a large volume of priest movements and
parish staff, we are currently updating the listing of
parish information. The staff of the A r c h b i s h o p ’s
O ffice will be sending out the updated listing to all
parishes in the next week or so.

STAT I O N A L MA S S E S A N D PA S C H A L MA S S
The purpose of the Lenten Stational Mass is for the
Bishop and Archbishop to visit all areas of the
Diocese to meet the people and to journey together
in Lent. Secondly the Stational Mass provides the
opportunity for Candidates for Full Communion in
the Catholic Church to be presented to the Bishop
who will welcome them into the Church. It is also a
great opportunity for specific cultural communities
to join with the hosting deanery.
Thank you also to those in the parishes who have
been preparing their candidates for this event. As has
been the practice in recent years the Archbishop and
Bishop will be celebrating this event in the
deaneries.

Thank you to the host parishes. They will remind the
deaneries of this important event and invite priests
and deacons to concelebrate. The host parishes and
the Archbishop/Bishop would like to see as many as
possible from the other parishes, so please publicise
these Stational Masses.
The Paschal Mass (Mass for new Catholics) has
been changed from April 26 to May 3 at the
Cathedral at 11 a m .

Applied Theology Priesthood
You will have received an invitation from the
Archbishop to gather and reflect on how best to live
out the church’s theology of priestly ministry in
these times of significant change and challenge. T h e
details of key speakers will be forwarded to you
soon, but I hope that you have the dates in your
diary and will bring your own experience to these
discussions so that we can seek a shared
understanding of the most healthy and eff e c t i v e
ways to live our vocation as priests with an
increasing sense of solidarity with one another.
International Women’s Day
I draw your attention to the material sent from the
O ffice for the Participation of Women, from the
Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, about the
celebration of International Wo m e n ’s Day on
M a r c h 8. The material includes prayers, homily
ideas and other suggestions for acknowledging this
day in the Liturg y. I am sure many of you will have
other forms of celebration or gatherings as well to
mark this important day. The focus of this year’s
material is celebrating the contribution of women to
the life of the Church. In each parish we are indebted
to so many women who have taken up leadership
responsibilities, are training for leadership, or who
provide pastoral care for those in need in our
communities. It is right to thank them and celebrate
the gifts they bring to our local Church.
C ATHOLIC THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE
2009 enrolment re m i n d e r
Bachelor of Ministry and Certificate of Ministry
students are reminded that the Enrolment sessions
are – Tues. Feb. 10, between 10:30am and 1:30pm,
and – Wed. Feb. 18, between 5 and 6pm.
Flinders University Undergraduate and Postgraduate
continuing students should ensure they are enrolled
online before classes begin.
Advance notice: The Heart of series returns this
year with Fr Michael Trainor presenting a five week
topic entitled The Heart of Romans in the Catholic
Tr a d i t i o n .
Dr Trainor will look at the most important letter
which St Paul ever wrote and has influenced
followers of Jesus ever since. Romans is Paul's
magisterial letter that reflects upon the fundamental
importance of Jesus in God’s plan for human beings.
This short course will change every myth you held
about Paul as you draw closer to Paul’s portrait of
Jesus.

study of this great early Christian writing.

A biography of Matthew Beovich, Archbishop of
Adelaide from 1939 to 1971, has been written by
CTC history lecturer Dr Jo Laffin and published by
Wakefield Press. Catholic Theological College has

Commonwealth Government Announcement for
S c h o o l s
Catholic Education SA has been delighted to receive
the news about building the Education Revolution
which means that $14.7 billion will be provided
around Australia to assist schools with the most upto-date
possible facilities for student learning.
Catholic schools will certainly be among the
beneficiaries for this and we are confident that this
will be another initiative to strengthen our schools as
faith-filled learning communities.
Australian Technical Colleges
The Archdiocese of Adelaide has been successful in
its submissions to become the education authority
for the two Australian Technical Colleges located in
the Adelaide metropolitan area.
The principal of the Elizabeth West college is Rob
Thomas and the Christies Beach college will be
headed by Jim Fenoughty, both of whom come from
a strong background in Catholic education.
Archbishop Wilson has been a strong supporter of
the Technical Colleges initiative since their inception
and is delighted that the archdiocese is able to off e r
leadership to these two colleges as they move into
the future in providing creative and flexible
education pathways to students.
