MENTAL HEALTH
The New Year’s
Resolution Trap
ew Year’s day never fails to evoke
N feelings of hope and renewal, but
is it really a trap?
You’ve been handed a proverbial clean
slate - another chance to shrug off your
bad habits and reach for your dreams.
In an attempt to bottle that New Year’s
vigor, you’ll make a few New Year’s
Resolutions. But before you put pen to
paper, you ought to know this:
It has been reported that 92% of all New
Year’s Resolutions end in failure. That
means that less than 1 out of every 10
people will successful accomplish their
resolutions in 2009. Ouch - those statistics
are brutal. Who in their right mind
would take the time to make resolutions
when failure is that imminent?
As your trusted source for fitness advice,
I’d like to coach you through this
sticky situation. Yes, most people fail to
achieve their New Year’s Resolutions.
However, I am going to clue you in on
what the 92% do wrong and teach you
what the 8% who succeed do right.
First up, the 92% who failed, shared
a common mistake that put the nail in
their coffin before they’d even begun:
They bit off more than they could chew.
In all the excitement of the New Year
they made the crucial mistake of committing
to do too much. But reality set
in, a few weeks or even days into their
reformed life, and they gave up.
• Instead of resolving to give up all
carbs, they commit to bring healthy
snacks to work instead eating from the
vending machine.
• Instead of resolving to drop 3 sizes
in 3 months, they commit to losing 1
pound each week until they reach their
desired size.
• Instead of resolving to never eat out
again, they commit to eating healthy all
week and rewarding themselves with
one meal out on the weekends.
Stress = Fat
Stress has been shown to contribute
to fat storage. Yikes. Take a break
from the daily grind to enjoy meditation
and relaxation. Want to know
another great way to relieve stress?
You guessed it: Exercise!
Monique’s Corner
Goodbye, 2008
and Hello, 2009.
The New Year engages promise
of change, the ability to shake off
past mistakes and become a better
you. Let 2009 be the year you take
control of you. 2009 is the year of
renewal and fulfillment of dreams!
You deserve it!
...If you want your
resolution to stick,
then think of something
simple and
realistic...
About the
author:
the Executive Director of Fitness for
In-Shape Health Clubs, Monique built
a multi-million dollar profit center,
fitness programs, personal training
services and corporate fitness trainings.
Monique is now the owner of Fit
in Sacramento, Ca, which provides
In-Home Fitness, Business On-site and
Internet fitness services. Monique is
an Author and National Presenter; she
has held previous management positions
with Western Athletic Clubs and
Paradigm Sports Clubs. 10 years of
industry experience.
The 92% gave themselves an easy way
out. They approached their resolution
with an ‘all or nothing’ attitude. Once
the ‘all’ became too tough they opted for
‘nothing’. And just like that another resolution
ended in failure - end of story.
Now let’s examine the 8% who succeed
with their resolutions year after year.
The key to their success is quite simple
(you may have even guessed it by now).
They set realistic goals:
• Instead of resolving to lose 50 pounds
by June, they commit to exercise 3-4
times each week.
If you want your resolution to stick, then
think of something simple and realistic.
Remember that the whole point of making
a New Year’s Resolution is to become
a healthier, happier and more successful
person. Small changes done consistently
will make a big difference.
If your New Year’s Resolution has to do
with losing weight and getting into great
shape (and whose isn’t?) then guarantee
your success by working with a fitness
expert who can show you the ropes and
guide you to success. I’d love to team
up with you - together we will transform
your body in 2009! Call or email to get
started today.
MENTAL HEALTH
By Ronda Degaust
What Causes
LOW SELF-ESTEEM?
Ask yourself the question, “What is
most important in my life?”
What is your first response?
Does financial wealth come to mind
or do words such as happiness, health,
contentment, love and peace of mind
have more resonance with you? The
words you think of are your values – the
ways you measure your success.
Winning the approval of significant people
in my life was my feeble attempt to
find happiness. I never found happiness
because I wasn’t living up to my values
– love, joy, contentment and, most
importantly, peace of mind. Instead, I
experienced considerable stress that affected
my quality of life. It limited me
in my career, prevented me from having
healthy relationships and most importantly...it
affected my health.
Self-Esteem Lesson Created Understanding
Truly understanding the importance of
living my life based on my own values
has been an incredible journey filled
with both pleasure and pain. For 20
years, I lived my life and based my selfworth
on other people’s values – what
they wanted me to do for them. I was
treated like Cinderella before she went
to the ball, criticized for how I looked,
acted and as for my ability – nothing
was ever good enough. I tried harder
and harder to please people, avoiding
any actions that would be seen as
wrong. Sacrificing my own values to
gain acceptance from my mother and
others, I repeated this pattern to overcome
their obvious dissatisfaction with
me. I believed it must have been my
fault since strangers would also point
out what was wrong with me.
It took time, but eventually I realized I
would need to heal from this emotional
pain and stress to reach the peace of
mind that I was searching for.
Is it Time for You to Change This
Pattern, Too?
If you are grappling with similar issues,
or know someone who is, perhaps you
understand the importance of changing
such destructive patterns. In recognizing
these patterns, you may conclude
that continuing to feel this way has the
potential to be a major barrier to your
success and your well being. After
making the decision to take responsibility
for my own success, I became
determined to do what was necessary
to overcome these issues by healing the
pain inside. My healing started when I
chose to take action.
What Worked for Me
Originally, I tried the traditional therapy
route. When it proved unsuccessful,
I decided to explore other options.
Several people shared their experiences
with me about NLP (Neuro-Linguistic
Programming) and how it helped them
make significant changes in their lives.
I knew from their stories it was what
I needed. This NLP process is based
on changing unwanted feelings and
behaviors. It’s about modeling excellence
and applying that excellence to
whatever you want to achieve. I felt
these principles would help me start
living a life filled with love, happiness,
joy, contentment, peace of mind and
return of my health.
Something amazing had happened to
me during my coaching session. At the
time, I wasn’t able to precisely define
the new feelings I felt inside. I experienced
a newly found energy, and that
felt exciting! I soon began doing things
I had once only dreamed about. After
several months of consistently feeling
different and no longer responding to
the criticism of others, I was convinced
that NLP really did work. It felt as if I
had been released from a cage that, for
years, held me prisoner inside myself.
I became passionate about learning its
processes and becoming a coach, helping
people heal their lives and experience
their own successes. This was the start of
a new journey, a journey leading me to
uncovering the real reason behind what
causes low self-esteem or low self-worth.
After eight years of helping others
break-thru their issues, I noticed a common
theme in most of my coaching
and training sessions; people struggle
mainly from low self-esteem and put
a high value on what they assume others
think of them. Most of my clients
struggle with issues of criticism from
others, taking it as a reflection of who
they are. Being criticized, abused or
rejected is what causes low self-esteem.
If you were never hurt from these issues,
you would have a strong sense of
self and plenty of confidence to do or be
anything you desire.
Our Advertising Works!!
Dear Health & Fitness Magazine,
“...As a massage therapist
moving from a spa environment
to a privatepractice office, I
wondered how I would build a
client base. My advertisement in
Health & Fitness has consistently
brought 5-10 new clients to my
practice each month.
Through their repeat business
and referrals to friends and
family, my advertising in Health
& Fitness is responsible for about 75% of my now
successful massage therapy/healing practice. Thank
you all so much for continuing to create and publish
such a quality publication. I look forward to all the
wonderful new clients I will meet in the coming year
through my continued advertising. Thanks again!”
Debbie Kemp, CMT
Divine Awakenings
Editor’s Notes
With this brand new year, we bring you
a brand new way to look at Health &
Fitness. Each issue will be a collectible
item you’ll want to keep as one of your
own resources.
Every month you’ll find a feature on a
specific part of the body; this month it’s
the foot. Check out all the articles on
different aspects of health and fitness related
to the foot. You’ll find two articles
about celebrities in this issue; one who
lives right here in Sacramento who has
a special invitation for you. Take a look
at the feature story on radon; now’s the
time of the year to get your home tested.
It’s also the time to check your vitamin
D levels; read the article on this. Each
issue will also protect you and your children
from a chemical by providing information
and a downloadable report to share with your friends.
Have a great New Year, and one filled with wisdom, prosperity and love!
helped my business.
My webmaster has
even posted it on the
nothing but the best
information concerning
the public than any
opportunity to thank your whole team there, “naturally
17 Weight Loss Tips
for the New Year
DAY SPA &
Massage Directory
Spoil yourself. Get Refreshed & Relaxed at any of
these great business locations!
1. Top bodybuilders never eat complex
carbohydrates for dinner or before
bed. Follow their example.
2. Go organic. Do you really need to
burden your body and pack in extra
chemicals into the fat cells?
3. Resolve to never skip breakfast.
4. Make it a point to learn the list of high
glycemic index foods, such as most
bread, popcorn, foods with more than
20 grams carbohydrate per serving,
jasmine rice, puffed rice products,
candy, and most protein bars. Remind
yourself that you’ll store fat for 18
hours after eating any of these foods.
5. Eat more protein. Your body functions
better on more protein. One research
study reported that eating 100 grams
protein per day increased the body’s
detoxification ability dramatically.
6. Use a pinch of sea salt with a few
meals a day. Sea salt has a complete
array of minerals that are easily absorbed
and utilized by the body.
7. Find a reason to work out. If you like
to dance, dance; if you like to cycle,
cycle. Let your passion drive your
movement.
8. Don’t go shopping if you’re hungry.
lease growth hormone, which helps
maintain muscle tone.
11. Place a bowl of raw vegetables on
your desk in the morning and make
a commitment to eat all of them by
the end of the day.
12. Avoid artificial sweeteners, which
can raise blood sugar levels or insulin
levels, resulting in an emotional
“crash” a few hours later.
13. Add one more 45 minute exercise
session per week.
14. Incorporate exercise into your vacation
activities.
15. Look into the mirror and tell yourself
you love every part of your body.
Talk to each body part and tell it what
you think about it. This may seem
crazy, but one informal study found
that people dropped weight much
quicker and their bad eating habits
stopped automatically as a result.
16. Set a goal for your weight loss. Post
it on your mirror in the bathroom
and on the refrigerator. Then imagine
how you will meet the goal.
HEALTH
By Brett Gottlieb, D.C.
NUCCA
A Simple Procedure that
Can Change Your Life!
What Makes NUCCA
Chiropractic Spinal Care Unique
Compared To Other Care?
There are many forms of spinal health
care today. Many focus on addressing
local joint function mobility by administering
a short, quick thrust to a localized
area. NUCCA Chiropractors influence
the entire spinal columns postural
balance by returning the heavy head to
a more balanced position on top of the
narrow neck.
Who Can Benefit From NUCCA?
Although upper cervical chiropractors
often end up seeing patients with fairly
significant discomfort, the assessment
that occurs allows the practitioner the
ability to visualize and reduce the misalignment
long before symptoms are
present. The postural rebalancing created
by the upper cervical adjustment
allows the body to have less gravitational
stress and therefore the person
can direct that now unused energy to
self-healing, maintenance, and thinking.
How Can I Tell If I Need An
Adjustment?
By paying attention to your body, you
may become more sensitive to whether
or not you are in alignment. Although
some rely on the return of their symptoms
to tell them when they’ve lost their
alignment, we recommend patients to
pay attention to their reflection in the
mirror; paying attention to head tilt
or a low shoulder for example. Other
cues may include where they feel their
weight distributed on their feet, or if a
change in gait is observed. More subtle
indications many even include having
to adjust you car rearview and side
mirrors. Even with all of these clues, it
is still recommended that periodic chiropractic
assessments be performed to
verify proper balance.
My Neck Feels Fine But My
Low Back Is Sore. How Can
NUCCA Help My Lower Back?
When posture is corrected, the entire
body rebalances resulting in less stress
to all areas including your low back.
What Can I Expect After My
Adjustment?
Responses to the adjustment vary from
nothing, to muscle soreness, and from
fatigue to a feeling of euphoria. Due to
these individualized responses all patients
are given a list of things they may
experience so they are familiar with
what responses are normal to expect.
Due to the significant postural rebalancing
that occurs with the upper cervical
adjustment people will often feel stiff
and sore for 2-4 days as the body adapts
to its new position. This discomfort is
usually associated only with the first
and/or second adjustment.
How Can Such A Light
Pressure Make Such
Dramatic Changes?
Although the patient feels only a slight
pressure behind their ear while being
adjusted, there is adequate force being
put into the neck. Using the first
vertebrae and the weight of the head
to gain a biomechanical advantage, the
doctor places their own body on a calculated
angle to ensure the adjustment
is specific to the patient’s individual
misalignment. The force generated by
the doctor is transferred to the patient
in such a gentle and precise fashion
that many patients are unaware of any
intervention whatsoever.
Why Are So Many Things
Positively Affected By One
Procedure?
The body is self-healing and its healing
capabilities are infinite. With your energy
no longer being excessively re-directed to
fight gravity, often the body will manage
to deal with other issues as well.
If you are suffering from pain, ill health,
or just would like to start feeling better
you should have your body balance
checked to see if it is okay. For a free
CELEBRITY
BodyBuilder
in Sacramento?
10 January Edition 2009 Want to Train with a
You may not know that Sacramento
is home to a world-class
athlete who ranks as the #1 Asian
bodybuilder on the planet! Kris Dim has
been training and competing since he
was 17 years old and competed in the
Mr. Olympia, which is the equivalent to
the Super Bowl or World Series of that
sport. He has been featured on the cover
of numerous fitness and workout magazines
around the world.
An opportunity of a lifetime has presented
itself right now where YOU
could be training with him tomorrow!
Whatever your workout goals are,

Kris Dim’s
Tips and Tricks
Top Motivational Tips
1. No goal, means no results! Start
with a realistic goal.
2. (For women) Buy a dress that’s
a few sizes smaller and use it as a
motivation to continue.
Top Exercise Tips
3. Expect that your progress will go
like this: drop (weight or fat), plateau,
drop, plateau, etc. Know that
you’ll break every plateau!
Before
you’re guaranteed faster results. You’ll
obtain a lifetime nutrition plan to stay
in shape. Even an injury doesn’t mean
you’re not eligible for this, because you
will learn how to reverse injuries in record
time, the way an athlete does.
Kris’ private gym consists of everything
a person needs to achieve maximum results
without a crowed gym atmosphere.
One might think this is a body building
gym, but this facility caters to all walks
of life and all types of goals. Male or
female, young or old, previous injuries
or not; the possibilities are endless when
trained by a world-class athlete.
“Health and fitness is my life!” Kris
says. ”It’s what I was born to do and
I’ve loved it from the day I started, until
now. I was a scrawny little kid when I
was young, but a natural when it came
to sports. I decided to start weight-training
and my body building career took
off from there.”
Randy, pictured on top, is 60 started
working out with Kris at 232 pounds.
Look at him now – he’s in the best
shape of his life!
Randy says:
“At 57 years of age, my children
came to me worried about my health.
At 5’7” and 232 lbs, I was a heart
attack waiting to happen. Besides
being grossly overweight, I was on
numerous medications due to obesity.
I joined a local gym not knowing how
After
to weight train or diet. It wasn’t long
before I injured myself. The only solution
my DR offered to me involved
surgery. Then I met Kris Dim at the
Mr. Olympia competition in Las Vegas
and was happy to learn he was from
Sacramento also. He agreed to help me
with my rehabilitation, without surgery
and teach me proper nutrition.
Today I’m 60 years old and 54 lbs
lighter due to Kris’ help. Most of all,
I did not have shoulder surgery! I’m
off all medications and feel and look
better than I did 20 years ago. I thank
Kris so much for helping change my
life, which was going physically, in
the wrong direction. This, no doubt
has added years to my life! Not only
do I thank Kris, but my children are
happy to see their dad living a healthier
lifestyle.”
“Personal training doesn’t have to
be expensive,” Kris states. “With the
economy the way it is, I now offer
group circuit training, which is an
economical alternative that will yield
results and fit anyone’s budget.”
2009 is a new year and a new beginning;
you owe it to yourself to take
the step. Best of all, Kris offers a free
trial session to anyone who wants to
try out his gym. There is no hard selling
since the training, nutrition and
advice speaks for itself! Remember,
the only person standing in your way
of your success is YOU!
1. If you want to build muscle, never
rest longer than 30-60 seconds between
sets. For fat-burning, rest no
more than 15 seconds between sets.
2. Work out three times a week if
you want to maintain your present
weight. Work out four times a week if
you want results, whether it’s weight
loss or muscle building.
3. If you have an injury, there are ways
to work around it during training.
Top 3 Nutrition Tips
1. Never eat complex carbohydrates
for dinner or before bed.
2. For dinner, only have protein and
vegetables.
3. When deciding your protein
source, go for meats (fish or poultry)
first, protein shakes as a 2nd
choice and lastly, protein bars.
ASTROLOGY
By Michael Mercury
The Mercury Minute
January 2009
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for
many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that
anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of
one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
– Buddha
Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19)
Love is found in all the right places, if
you are interested. Be open to emotional
insights. You meet people who help
clarify your situation in life. Love is
just a glance away. If you let go of your
tendency to be uptight, you’ll have an
entertaining weekend. You’re in a time
that could help usher in a new fling
with sensual delights to enjoy. Work is
a bit dull, but keep a good attitude.
Aquarius (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18)
Work, money, and pursuit of your
dreams are on the menu. Are you enjoying
your educational experience with
life? If not, consider doing something
about it. Your friends are a blessing to
you. Communication is the focus, and
it brings emotional growth. Are you
interested in following up on a romantic
possibility? This could be hot! Meditate
for awareness. Learn from your selfmade
problems. You’re making a major
shift this year and it’s because of your
hard work.
Pisces (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20)
Work opportunities are available; all
you have to do is ask. You have good
fortune arriving in due time, so be
patient. If you are in a relationship,
passion is waiting and intimacy could
deepen in a meaningful way. Dreams
reveal profound insights about yourself.
You can feel that you’re changing
within, and this is just the beginning.
Yoga and swimming are good forms
of mediation. Do what is in your best
interest, and keep it simple for the best
experience and results.
Aries (Mar. 21 - Apr. 19)
You’re in the right place at the right time
for accomplishing your immediate needs.
By helping others, you help yourself;
so be open to requests for your personal
attention. Important contacts are made in
unlikely places. If you’re feeling a bit off
center, then work out or do something.
Stay active and fit for your own good.
Getting back into shape would be a wise
approach at this time. It’s best to keep a
low profile and work from within.
Taurus (Apr. 20 - May 20)
Are you caught up with all your past
obligations? This is a time to strive for
emotional balance and moderation in
all the things that you do. Be flexible
with your attitude. The planets activate
your partnership interests. A romantic
encounter is in the air. Make sure you
accept what happens to you! Be careful
when traveling; you don’t need a ticket
or an accident. Friends and family are
the important people in your life.
Gemini (May 21 - June 21)
Good news arrives when you least expect
it, revealing information that has an
emotional impact. It’s in your interest
to gain insight into your emotions. Find
forgiveness and understanding as a way
of life. For the greatest growth, love is
to be cultivated. You’re amazing when
it comes to information; however, be
careful not to overload yourself, as you
may overlook something. Life is full of
details, but don’t forget the big picture.
Cancer (June 22 - July 22)
This could be the best time to reevaluate
your partnerships in life. You’re overly
sensitive, as Saturn is still raising emotional
issues; therefore, make the most
of this time by listening to your inner
voice. Contact family members who
need your attention. Your recent experiences
have revealed information that
you can learn from. Romance could be
rocky, but you have to know when to let
go. Emotions run hot and cold.
Leo (July 23 - Aug. 22)
It’s time to examine your emotional
health and the way you use your ego.
It’s not always about you. You can get
what you want if you learn to pay attention
to the needs of your friends and
your partner. You experience opposition
with authority, so be willing to make adjustments.
You can be very charming, so
make sure you keep that part of yourself
in tact; it will come in handy.
Virgo (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22)
You should consider driving with more
caution than usual. Meditate and embrace
the peace of mind that can be
yours. Learn to stay within yourself.
Recognize truth and beauty in all things.
Pay attention to your health! You may
be feeling a bit of a let down, which is
all the more reason to recharge yourself!
Reading will reawaken a perception that
you may have forgotten about over the
years. For a happier life, support people
and consider not judging others.
Libra (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23)
You seek harmony in your life, so create
what you want with balance in mind.
This is a good time for examining what
works in your life and what needs adjustment.
Your home life is the focus,
but you still contact old friends that you
haven’t seen lately. You meet someone
of a romantic interest if you’re single.
Keep your thoughts to yourself and focus
on your greatest wish, one that will
make a difference in your life.
Scorpio (Oct. 24 - Nov. 21)
Stress could be a thing of the past, as
the planets have alleviated some of
your challenges. The best way to avoid
a potential energy drain is to do as
little as possible. You’ll have an emotional
insight as to why you’re in your
current situation and what you need to
change. What nurtures you? Who supports
you? These are important questions
for your consideration as the New
Year points you in a new direction. Be
still within yourself.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)
Make plans for the future and enjoy the
planning – because that is what makes
success blossom. Your ability to communicate
your needs and desires is
important for getting what you want.
To become financially sound is a major
consideration. Start a savings account
for a rainy day. This is an opportune
time to learn about yourself. Life is a
mystery and so are you. The key is to
know what you want.
HEALTH – THE FOOT
Are You Predisposed
to Athlete’s Foot?
As expected by the name, athlete’s
foot is more common among athletes.
The sweaty feet, wet shoes
and socks, and locker room floors are
all part of perfect environment for the
fungus. Yet some athletes never get
athlete’s foot and others get it over and
over. Are some predisposed to it?
How do you know if you are predisposed
to athlete’s foot fungus? Since the
fungal spores can survive for months on
the floors of bathrooms, locker rooms
and swimming pools so if you are predisposed
to athlete’s foot, it doesn’t take
much to infect or re-infect yourself.
Here are some of factors that could
help you determine whether or not you
are one of those more disposed to getting
athlete’s foot.
1) You’ve already had athlete’s foot at
least once in your life. That alone makes
you more susceptible to athlete’s foot
fungus in the future.
2) You have more exposure to the fungus
because of either professional or
recreational activities, such as those on
locker room floors and showers
3) If you travel frequently, you are exposed
more to spores on hotel room carpets
and bathrooms, and swimming pool
/ hot tub areas left there by everyone
else who has walked there before you.
4) If, either professionally or recreationally,
you wear airtight and/or watertight
footwear you are more susceptible.
5) You are a person whose skin produces
less fatty acid, which is a natural
anti-fungal agent.
6) You normally have sweaty feet, then
your predisposition to athlete’s foot
increases.
7) You have some form of immune
deficiency, which will make you more
prone to athlete’s foot.
8) You have poor foot circulation.
9) You are a diabetic, which is a serious
risk factor, as diabetics are significantly
more likely to have a fungal infection
than non-diabetics.
If you fit into any of the categories
above, it is very important to take proper
care of your feet. You can learn how
to prevent being infected with athlete’s
foot fungus at http://footfungusinformation.blogspot.com/2008/04/ways-to-prevent-athletes-foot-fungus.html
Athlete’s Foot Comes in Three Varieties
There are actually three different types
of Athletes’ Foot. While they are all
caused by a genus of ringworm, they all
display differently.
The three defined types are: Chronic Interdigital
Athlete’s Foot (also known as Toe
Web Infection), Chronic Scaly Athlete’s
Foot (also know as Moccasin Type) and
Acute Vesicular Athlete’s Foot.
The most common type is Chronic Interdigital
Athlete’s Foot. It is typically found
between the 4th and 5th toes. The skin
becomes moist and white, there might be
itching, or burning or even a slight odor.
This is the easiest type to treat.
Chronic Scaly Athlete’s Foot often starts
with a minor irritation. It is called Moccasin
Type because, as it progresses,
the foot can become red and scaly in a
pattern resembling a moccasin. The skin
of the foot thickens and begins to crack.
Chronic Scaly Athlete’s Foot can be
hard to treat and very often needs prescription
antifungal medication.
A sudden appearance of blisters is what
usually distinguishes Acute Vesicular
Athlete’s Foot from the other two types.
While it can be severe, it is also easily
treated. Generally, this type of athlete’s
foot will develop after a long fight with
a toe web infection.
All three types are treated with antifungal
medications. Toe Web Infection
and Acute Vesicular Athlete’s Foot can
usually be treated, successfully, with
over-the-counter topical creams, sprays,
lotions and/or powders. No matter what
type of athlete’s foot is present, it must
be treated. The fungus will not go away
by itself. If left untreated, it is possible
for a severe infection to set in, requiring
prescription antibiotics from a health
care professional.
Complications of Athlete’s Foot
Because untreated athlete’s foot can
potentially spread, it is very important
for everyone to know what
athlete’s foot is and how to prevent it
and treat it.
Athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus,
commonly called ringworm, which
is an unfortunate name because ringworm
has absolutely nothing to do
with worms. It is simply a reference
to the appearance that this fungus
makes on the skin. When feet, and
other parts of the body, are in a warm
and moist environment, there is the
very real possibility of contracting
athlete’s foot.
Athlete’s foot should be treated immediately.
The fungus can spread to other
parts of the body and to other people,
including family members. It is common
for athlete’s foot fungus to turn
up on skin, in the hair and under nails.
While it is uncommon, very severe
athlete’s foot can lead to open wounds,
a perfect place for bacteria to enter the
bloodstream.
Fungal infections of the nails are very
hard to treat. Oral antifungal medications
might be necessary to treat
advanced cases of toe or fingernail
fungal infection.
People with immune problems, such
as diabetes, HIV/AIDS and cancer, are
particularly susceptible to all kinds of
infections. If they develop athlete’s
foot it is very important that treatment
is started right away.
Skin is the natural barrier that protects
our bodies. If the skin is broken because
of a fungus infection, a bacterial
infection can set in. This can very likely
happen to the elderly, people with
diabetes or chronic leg swelling or
anyone who has had a vein removed.
Anyone who has an impaired immune
system should be particularly careful.
Not only is athlete’s foot uncomfortable
and unsightly, it can be potentially
dangerous. If you suspect you
have athlete’s foot, begin treatment
immediately.
on the prevention and treatment of
athlete’s foot.
HEALTH – THE FOOT
By Dr. Donna
Athlete’s Foot Remedies
There are plenty of athlete’s foot
remedies widely used by people
looking for relief. Many of them are
very simple to follow, as most of them
use commonly available natural products.
To date, though, there has not been
any study on the effectiveness of them.
Here’s an analysis of them – why they
may or may not work.
Here’s a list of several known remedies
used often and recommended by many:
1. Rubbing diluted alcohol on the affected
area with cotton balls
This can dry out the feet more, so be
careful. It’s probably a temporary solution
at best, and only for short-term use.
2. Applying aloe vera gel twice daily on
the affected areas
This one certainly won’t harm you in
any way.
3. Apple cider vinegar. Soak the feet
in a mixture of equal amounts of apple
cider vinegar and water for ten minutes
daily up to ten days or until symptoms
disappear. Apple cider vinegar has
antifungal, antibacterial and possibly
antiviral activities and will never harm
skin. It’s also used in cases of seborrheic
dermatitis.
4. Some people soak their feet in a
solution of baking soda and water for
about 30 minutes daily. This is thought
to change the pH of the skin to what it
should be and should not harm the skin.
Restoring the skin to its proper pH is
known to kill bacteria and fungus that
can’t live at the proper pH.
5. Washing the feet in a mild solution of
boric acid is also used.
This is similar to #3 and #4. Boron is an
essential element that may be consumed
in low amounts in the diet; if this one
works, it may be because boron levels
are raised.
6. Chaparral in a footbath.
Chaparral is the herb that makes the
desert smell so clean and fresh after a
rainstorm. It has great antifungal, antibacterial
and antiviral activities. About
2 tablespoons of chaparral in the footbath
could help because it is a detoxifier
as well.
7. Cinnamon is thought to effectively
combats both yeast and fungal infections;
however, don’t expect cinnamon
alone to cure athlete’s foot!
8. Dimethyl sulfoxide, an effective
fungicide.
Whether it’s an effective fungicide
remains to be proven. It’s primarily an
anti-inflammatory agent. It comes in gel
form and can be rubbed on the area.
9. Rubbing a clove of raw garlic on the
fungus.
You can expect to have pain with this
one! Garlic eats away at tissues when
it’s used on open and raw areas. I recall
reading a case where a woman with an
oozing breast cancer packed her breast
with raw garlic and ended up in the ER
with second degree burns. Don’t rub
garlic on raw open areas ever!
10. Ginger is a strong antifungal product.
Again, ginger is not strong enough to
combat the athlete’s foot fungus.
11. Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), a
powerful antimicrobial product and an
excellent disinfectant.
GSE has these properties but when used
by itself will not cure athlete’s foot.
12. Rubbing raw honey on the infected
areas before bedtime and leaving it
overnight.
Honey is antimicrobial; fungus from athlete’s
foot needs something more potent.
13. Applying onion juice twice daily.
Good luck doing this! You’ll cry in the
process, and lose a few friends.
14. Tea tree oil contains antiseptic compounds
that are skin disinfectants.
Tea tree oil can definitely impact athlete’s
foot. If your case is pretty serious,
you may want to combine tea tree oil
with other remedies.
15. Applying vitamin E oils directly on
the affected areas twice daily.
This is another example of something
that most likely will not work. Vitamin
E strengthens the cell walls – a
good thing, but you need a potent fungus
killer.
When trying to eliminate athlete’s foot
naturally, there are several things to
consider:
1. Why do you have it in the first place?
Athlete’s foot signals an issue with the
immune system. What is missing from
the diet? What are you doing to destroy
your immune system; i.e., eating too
many polyunsaturated or hydrogenated
fats, eating too many processed foods
and sugar, not enough protein?
The true answer
lies in correcting
the imbalance.
It’s possible you
may have low
levels of selenium,
zinc, vitamin
A, vitamin E,
boron, and other
vitamins and minerals.
Are you on a
customized nutrition
plan to reverse this?
2. Many times people
think that skin issues
are the result of something
they’re wearing,
not the result of something
they’re doing internally.
Certainly wearing wet
socks or sweaty socks for extended
periods of time will contribute to
the problem, but always look for the
internal reasons, such as those mentioned
in #1. Remember that there was
a time when you didn’t have athlete’s
foot. What were you doing back then
compared to now?
3. Use athlete’s foot remedies that work.
I’ve used herbs for over 15 years that
were so effective at treating fungus that
the veterans who were in Viet Nam with
foot fungus were able to clear it up in
very little time. Herbs like that exist and
they’re usually used in combination,
never alone. A credible herbalist rarely
uses one herb as a remedy. My athlete’s
foot recommendation is to use one of
these herbal combinations that have
proven themselves in the past.
The longer you wait to find out the
real reason behind your athlete’s foot,
the longer you could potentially continue
to have other things go wrong
with your immune system. Remember
that athlete’s foot is just a symptom of
something else that’s wrong.
HEALTH – THE FOOT
Different Types of Warts
What is a Foot Wart?
Excessive Foot Sweating
Symptoms & Natural
Treatments For Foot Sweating
Excessive foot sweating is a form
of sweating called plantar hyperhidrosis.
Other forms of hyperhidrosis
include palmar hyperhidrosis and axillary
hyperhidrosis. This article focuses
on the symptoms of foot sweating, its
symptoms and the available cures.
Foot sweating is characterized by excessive
sweating of the soles of the feet.
It is one of the most common forms of
hyperhidrosis, and affects about 1% of
the population of the world.
There can be many causes of excessive
foot sweating for the people who have
this condition, and it is hard to pinpoint
the exact cause for each person. It could
be caused by an overactive nervous system,
or overactivity of the sweat glands
themselves. Another common cause of
foot sweating is heredity. It is very common
to see family members with similar
severity of the foot sweating condition.
The obvious symptom of excessive foot
sweating is the sweating of the soles of
the feet. Many other reasons can include
stress and anxiety, or even during intimate
moments. For people who suffer
from severe foot sweating though, the
condition can also occur with no real
reason at all.
Excessive foot sweating exists in many
different degrees. For people who suffer
from mild foot sweating, it is only a
little annoying to them, but they do not
consider it to be a big problem. More
severe forms of foot sweating can lead
to other diseases. For example, excessive
sweating of the feet can cause athelete’s
foot, bacterial infections, fungal
toenails or other skin problems.
There are many ways to treat excessive
foot sweating. The most basic
form of treatment is supportive
therapy, which should be used for
every severity types of foot sweating.
It involves using absorbent foot
powders, and changing shoes and
socks more frequently. More severe
types of foot sweating may need to
be treated with medications like Drysol
or iontophoresis. Most of these
treatment methods are expensive,
and I’ve personally tried injections,
but to no avail.
There are natural remedies to cure
excessive foot sweating though. As
an excessive hyperhidrosis sufferer, I
used a natural method that has significantly
reduced my sweating after the
course of applying the method for a
few weeks. If you suffer from excessive
foot sweating, you should look to
find out its causes and cure it quickly,
before it results in the other conditions
that I have described above.
Do you want to treat foot sweating
naturally and easily? The author, Ricky
who has used natural remedies to free
himself from excess sweating. Visit
where he tells you about
the natural remedy methods that he
has tried from various guides he used.
For a limited time, you can also get a
FREE e-course on excess sweating at
the real shocking causes of sweating
and the available methods for treating
excess sweating!
Foot warts are a type of warts that
can be found at the bottom of the
foot. A foot wart is about 1cm in diameter
and is generally paler than the
nearby skin. It has tiny black dots at
the centre.
Foot warts have the tendency to group
together into clusters. Because it is
at the bottom of the foot, this type of
wart is generally quite flat.
Sometimes it may cause pain because
of the constant pressure exerted when
walking. Furthermore, because of this
constant pressure, it has the tendency
to grow back inside the foot.
A foot wart is also known by the name
of plantar wart. The medical name for
this type of wart is ‘verruca plantaris’
or just ‘verruca’.
The human papilloma virus or HPV
causes foot warts. This virus is responsible
also for other type of warts. The
human papilloma virus can enter your
skin from little cuts or scratches.
Unfortunately this virus is also contagious
and so you may get foot warts
from getting this virus from another
individual. Objects that are touched by
another individual that carries this virus
may also be contagious.
The human papilloma virus dwells in
wet and warm habitats. So bathrooms
and swimming pool areas are excellent
habitats for this virus. It is a good idea
to take appropriate caution and as much
and not walk barefooted in these areas.
Furthermore if you have this type of
wart do not scratch it and then touch
other parts of your body. Pay particular
attention not to scratch it with your other
foot since this may also increase the
chance of getting a foot wart on your
other foot as well.
There are many types of foot warts
treatments that can help you to treat
this type of wart. They include over the
counter wart removal treatments, surgical
wart removal treatment and home
treatments for warts.
HEALTH – THE FOOT By Janet Smith HEALTH – THE FOOT By Annalisa Zisman
The History of
Thai Foot
Massage
What’s New
in Foot Massage Tools?
It’s no secret that there are many
benefits of using foot massage tools.
Foot massage has been used as medicinal
therapy for thousands of years the
world over. If you haven’t enjoyed the
benefits of today’s new foot massage
tools here are a few reasons to enjoy
the benefits of foot massage tools.
Scientific research proves specific benefits
of massage, and using foot massage
tools can only help the process.
Any time massage occurs on any body
parts, that area receives increased blood
circulation. The blood is the lifeline
of every cell in your body. It carries
nutrients to the cells, and carries toxins
and poisons away from the cells. When
blood flow increases to an area, then
the area will be proportionately rejuvenated
and cleansed. There is scientific
data to support these facts. It only
makes sense that there are benefits of
foot massage tools.
One scientific study performed on heart
surgery patients showed a significant
decrease in levels of stress after a foot
massage. Reducing stress levels helps
the body in many ways, both mentally
and physically.
Many feel there are benefits to other
areas of the body with a foot massage.
Some believe there are certain reflex
points on the feet that correspond to
other parts of the body. When these
points are massaged, the corresponding
body part is also rejuvenated.
You can now obtain scientifically designed
foot massage tools to use at
home whenever you like. These foot
massage tools give you a wonderfully
relaxing and calming massage. Pains
and tiredness can be greatly reduced.
The iSqueeze Calf and Foot Massager is
one of the best choices for foot massage
equipment. You’ll get all the benefits of
a professional quality foot and calf massage
right at home. Invigorating disks
squeeze and penetrate muscles, while
soothing vibration improves the circulation
and energizes tired muscles. Pressure
nodes stimulate the bottom of the
foot for enhancing the benefits of the
foot massage.
The combination of heat and massage
therapy in the Massaging Foot Warmer
provides maximum comfort and relieves
tired aching feet. Electronic remote
control gives you once touch heat and
massage control. Just sit back and your
feet will be relaxed and toasty warm in
no time.
Another benefit is that your feet feel
great after using foot massage tools.
There’s a level of relaxation over the
entire body when your tired achy feet
get a massage. If you’ve never tried
suing foot massage tools at home to
relieve your tied feet, you owe it to
yourself to try.
Thai foot massage dates back
over hundreds of years, and
has been one of the most effective
and revered forms of massage in
the Orient, and eventually all over
the world. Though Thai massage
can cover the entire body, the art of
Thai foot massage is an art in and of
itself. Thai foot massage was developed
over the years by incorporating
foot massage techniques from
some places such as China, Japan,
and Korea.
Most people who have experienced
Thai foot massage can attest to its
benefits. The foot is probably the
most abused part of the body, but not
only that, it seems to have a direct
connection to every other part of
the body. A good Thai foot massage
not only makes your feet feel wonderful,
it can promote healing and
relaxation in many other parts of the
body as well. In the ancient Orient,
this was discovered rather early, and
foot massage was used as a method
of healing both the mind and the
body. As a holistic treatment, those
in the ancient Orient realized that
foot massage could relieve stress,
help promote restful sleep, increase
circulation, and even help promote a
better immune system. In the mental
sense, it could increase alertness and
enhance creativity.
Thai foot massage incorporates elements
of what we recognize as reflexology.
The foundation of reflexology
is that there are certain points
on the foot that can affect other areas
of the body. Thai foot massage and
reflexology can extend to the ankles
and legs as well. For this reason,
most Thai foot masseuses will ask for a
detailed medical history before beginning
treatment. In this way they can
determine what pressure points can be
focused on more than others, and even
help patients discover problems early
that they may not have been aware of.
Thai foot massage usually takes about
an hour, and starts not with immediately
focusing on pressure points, but
on what the masseuse calls “opening
the pathways of energy”. In Thai foot
massage it is believed that the massage
must be done in stages, readying the
subject for each successive step so that
each step in turn can be most effective.
A reputable Thai foot masseuse also
knows when massage can be beneficial
and when it can actually be harmful. If
there are any serious injuries or illnesses
that the subject needs to address, the
masseuse will require that treatment
by a physician before trying Thai foot
massage. Though Thai foot massage
can help in the healing process tremendously,
it is not a substitution for
medical treatment. During healing,
however, and as long as a complete
medical history is known, Thai foot
massage can have incredible benefits,
both for those what are in good health
and for those who are suffering several
different types of ailments.
writes for a few different learn massage
techniques sites (see
RELATIONSHIPS
Viewpoint Inspired...
Dear Mitch,
I have a friend who wanted to ask his
girlfriend to get married. They’ve been
dating for less than a year and this question
of his keep popping up in every
conversation we have: how long is long
enough before a couple should tie the
knot?
My usual response is there’s no formula
to answer this. Every situation is different.
A person has to know himself first
before he is ready to dive in a relationship.
There are some couples who dated
many years and end up in divorce. I don’t
think there’s a definite time line. I knew
my wife (from San Antonio) a fairly short
period, mostly on long daily conversations
over the phone. She flew here every
month and we got married in Vegas 4
months after we first met... Big risk, but a
risk worth taking! We’ve been (very happily)
married now for seven years (and 3
children)!
Thank you,
Maybe Just Lucky
St. Helena
Hey At Home,
Hey Lucky,
“To have to have any meaning or viability
at all, a life plan must include
intimate relationships” --Harriet Lerner
What are the odds, eh?! You and
your wife met and had a mostly longdistance
relationship. Married pretty
quickly. And are to be “happily married”
forever!!!
To some degree actually, it is about
odds! When we come up with
guidelines for protecting against bad
relationships and/or mistakes, all
we’re doing is giving people the
cognitive (thoughts) & behavioral
pieces to increase their odds of
relationship success!
NOTE: There are NO absolute rules
or guidelines to guarantee ending
up with a rewarding long-term relationship
(LTR)!
This would start with the fact that
humans took some 100,000 years to
recognize the concept of romance,
and even more to decide that we
want romance in our marriage (and/
or LTR’s)!! If it weren’t for Medieval
French Troubadors’ discovery
that romantic stories entertained
the royalty (and allowed them to
keep their heads), we may never
have date nights, French-kissing, or
Valentine’s Day!!
• If You Don’t Know Where
You’re Going, That’s Where
You’ll End Up!
Most of us really want a great marriage
(or long-term relationship).
When’s the last time you really took
quiet time to consider what this
means to you?! No wonder your
friend is hesitant about a marriage
proposal – he’s not sure what’s in
the fine print!
What characteristics and values will
end up being of greatest value to your
friend in a long-term relationship?
What roles do characteristics like
these play?
• Money sensibility
• Meaning of, and importance of fun
• Matching sense of humor
• High energy or mellow nature
• Sensible/Realistic vs. Dreamer/
Hopeful type
• Go-Getter vs. Planner
• Growth-Oriented
There’s only like a billion relationship
books on the endless number
of relationship elements to consider.
If you’re trying to help your friend
grasp answers as to what he should do,
maybe he could look at.
What’s relationship success to him?
• “At least we don’t kill each other!”
• “We raised (X-number) healthy adult
children!”
• “Do a lot of things together”
• “We’re very intimate with each
other!”
If your friend can get a handle on
what he’d feel is a successful (good)
marriage, that he feels he and his girlfriend
can share their feelings, and that
there’s a good match for the long-run,
then that’s a great start!
Has he ever seen a successful relationship
role-modeled in his life?
• It’s Really Hard To Get Somewhere
You’ve Never Seen!
If your pal knows someone who’s
LTR/Marriage appears to be successful,
then he should talk with that
person – ask what characteristics in
the couple contributed to their success
– and what about their relationship IS
successful. It may be a very different
version of success.
“But how can some of the happiest
LTR’s/Marriages started in an instant
& last forever?!”
Great question....
• Are you willing to really go
for it? Let go of any ideas of
needing the PERFECT one?
• What are your boundaries,
criteria and expectations
for yourself and your
partner? oAre they truly about the
big stuff, knowing all sorts of little
stuff won’t seem to match?
Sometimes I think that those couples
that meet, decide to commit very quickly,
and end up staying together in a relatively
successful, happy situation are
those that simply went for it – dropped
any impulse to seek those endless things
that are wrong about our partner, ourselves,
our relationship.
In the words of the great Bob Seger, “It
is the things in common that make relationships
enjoyable, but it is the little
differences that make them interesting.”
Actually those little differences
are why long-term partners are meant
to be!
Your buddy and his special friend may
or may not be meant to be long-term
partners – a couple with the same core
values and commitment to fully go for
it – to be open for true intimacy: vulnerable
– the foundation, and the spice
which inspires Forever!
FITNESS
I
f you don’t have any oomph in your
exercise routine, it may be time to
change to something more exciting.
Shouldn’t exercising be fun? Consider
the advice of Julia Powers, 12 times undefeated
U.S. & Arthur Murray Rhythm
Champion and three times World Mambo
Champion. She has won more U.S. titles
than any other person in the history of
American ballroom dancing.
Q: Julia, I never realized that it was possible
to have a great-looking body from
dancing but you and your partner, Jaana
Kunitz have proven it. It looks like you
work out on weights for at least an hour a
day. Do you do any weight lifting to have
such a strong looking, healthy body that
defies aging?
A: Dancing is my only form of exercise, I
hate lifting weights! When I go to the gym
(to teach Core Rhythms Dance classes) I
pass the Stairmasters and see such bored
expressions on people’s faces. I feel sorry
for them. When people come to our classes,
they leave with a huge smile every time.
What other activities can you get that with?
People always ask me, “How do you stay
in shape?” and I tell them I dance! They
say, “No, you must do something else.”
But it’s true. All I do is dance. When
you dance using the three Core Rhythms
movements, you strengthen all your muscles,
especially the abdominal muscles.
And, it makes you look like a bodybuilder.
Dance Exercise Program
“How many crunches do you do?” and I
tell them the same thing. None!
Q: Julia, did you have big dreams to be a
champion at the start? Were you always a
good dancer?
A: No. I’m from Russia and when I was
six years old my mom told me, ‘You will
be a dancer.’ I didn’t have a choice like
kids do here. At first it was a drag but
when I was 10, I would go to competitions,
win, and come back with trophies.
It made me feel very special. People look
up to you in school when you win. When I
was 18 years old, I came to the U.S.
Q: So the Core Rhythms DVDs fuse Latin
rhythms and movement into a dynamic
workout system. Your breakthrough exercise
concept is based on world-class Latin ballroom
dance techniques that strengthen the
core and abdominals, while sculpting legs,
arms, buttocks and thighs. I would imagine
that it’s a good way to boost self-esteem.
A: Jaana Kunitz, my partner, and I designed
the dance routines for the DVDs.
And we get incredible results – people can
speed-shrink the waistline, burn away fat
and tone the abs and they don’t have to
go to the gym. They do it in the privacy
of their home. They don’t need any expensive
equipment. And their self-esteem
does go up.
Q: I noticed just with one session that my
posture was so much better and it felt like
I didn’t have to exert any energy to stand
or sit up straight.
A: Yes, that happens all the time. Your
core is the center of your body and you
are working those core muscles over and
over in the program. After the sessions,
people always have that huge smile on
their face, and they have a better awareness
of their body. If they were bloated,
they start wiggling and it’s gone. Their
digestion improves. The moves make you
more aware of your body parts and you
start feeling sexier.
Q: What are the steps to get to that point?
A: The first time you do the program; try
to pick up the rhythm.
My advice is to just
keep moving when
you start. After the
third or fourth time,
you will recognize
the moves better and
your range of motion
will improve. Then,
you start to pick up
the rhythm changes.
I call it ‘sneaky exercising’
because after
45 minutes you’ll
say, ‘whew! That was
good! I want to do it
again!’
Q: With your program,
no one needs
a partner either. Now
what I’m wondering
is how long before
someone can strap
on spikes and go
clubbing? I noticed
that you always wear
those spikes in competitions.
A: Get the moves down first, and then
add the spikes later! Give yourself a few
weeks, maybe sooner if you dance regularly
right now.
Q: It must be pretty difficult to win a competition.
Tell us about that.
A: At competitions, the judging is very
different from other sports. We’re judged
on everything, not just the dance –shape,
choreography, hair, costume, how our body
complements our partner...One thing we
mention when we teach is that when you
do the Samba moves, you might get sore
at first but you have to stick to it. It will go
away. People will see your agility when
you walk.
Q: You met your husband in the business.
How did that happen?
A: When I saw him, I knew he was it.
But, he was a dancer and partners should
never be husband and wife because each
person wants to dance their own way.
What I discovered was that you can dance
together as long as you genuinely love
and respect each other. We’ve been married
for 17 years now.
Q: Your dance/exercise program is definitely
revolutionary. Tell us more about it.
A: The DVDs include step-by-step invigorating
dance instruction in the Salsa,
Samba and Merengue. It’s a full body
workout.
The starter pack includes A Full Workout;
Quick Workout; Latin Dance Made Easy;
and Kick Start DVDs, as well as a free
seven-day Diet Guide with menu plans to
help you slim down while you are toning
up. On the DVDs, you will see me and my
co-creator, Jaana Kunitz teaching the steps.
Jaana has been featured on PBS, NBC,
ESPN and the hit movie “Dance with Me”
starring Vanessa Williams. She’s received
many championship titles including 10
times International Latin Championship,
North American Latin Showdance Champion
and fourth in the World Latin Showdance
Championships. Jaana is also an
ACE certified Fitness instructor.
Q: I think the benefits people receive
speak for themselves.
A: Absolutely! We included movements
inspired from the Paso Doble to tighten up
buns. The Samba moves work the stomach
for flatter abs, and movements from
the Merengue slim down the waist.
Q: Thanks, Julia for your insight into a
new way to add a little life to our exercise
routines and help us exceed our weight
loss and health goals for the New Year!
HEALTH
Why Wintertime is the
Logical Time to Test
Vitamin D & Neurotransmitters
By Dennis Godby, MA, NMD
Naturopathic Medical Doctor
Despite the abundant sunshine in California,
virtually everyone in Northern California
not taking optimal amounts of Vitamin
D in the winter, are deficient in this absolutely
critical nutrient. Also, if you normally feel
more blue during the winter months, it may be
due to lowering serotonin levels.
Vitamin D story
Having a low level of Vitamin D is associated
with an amazing 26 percent increased
rate of death, from all causes, according to a
2008 Archives of Internal Medicine study.
A large variety of studies have demonstrated
that low Vitamin D levels are a major factor
in: at least 17 varieties of cancer; heart
disease; stroke; high blood pressure; autoimmune
diseases, such as multiple sclerosis;
diabetes; depression; chronic pain; osteoarthritis;
osteoporosis; muscle weakness and
wasting; birth defects; periodontal disease;
weakened immunity, such as the flu; inflammatory
bowel disease....and many others.
If preventing cancer is important to you - a
2007 UC San Diego research team reported
that up to a whopping 50 percent of all breast
and colon cancer cases could be prevented by
consuming more vitamin D. Approximately
three-fourths of the American population do
not have adequate vitamin D levels.
After exposure to the same amount of sunlight,
60-year-olds make 4 times less vitamin
D than do 20-year-olds. It is safe and wise to
assume that seniors are Vitamin D deficient
and would benefit greatly by supplementing
with D3; however, testing twice a year to
reach optimal levels would be prudent.
Although wintertime Sacramento sunshine
may lift your mood, it will not help your Vitamin
D levels, as levels drop it creates the
perfect internal environment for wintertime
flues and other immune challenges.
Research from around the world has clearly
demonstrated that people do less well in the
winter as Vitamin D levels drop.
Vitamin D has profound and multiple effects
on human immunity. Influenza occurrence
parallels vitamin D deficiency. Norwegians
- who get less sun exposure than other Europeans
- have less flu epidemics and a smaller
wintertime spike in mortality because their
diet includes fish oil and the highest wintertime
vitamin D levels.
Due to increased skin melanin, African-
Americans generally have lower vitamin D
levels than Caucasians and may explain why
African-American children get pneumonia
twice as often as Caucasian children, and
why African-American adults often have
higher blood pressure.
Children with rickets, the classic vitamin D
deficiency illness are 11 times more likely to
have lower respiratory infections than children
without rickets.
Are your vitamin D 25 Hydroxy levels at
the optimal 60-80 ng/mL?
Serotonin and neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters (NTs) are molecules that
regulate brain function and send messages
from nerve to nerve both within the brain
and outside the brain. They also relay messages
from nerve to intestinal tracts, muscle
and lungs.
Common symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalances
include: mood disorders, i.e. panic
attacks, depression, anxiety; eating disorders,
such as food cravings and poor appetite
control appetite; memory and pain disorders;
and metabolic problems, such as fatigue and
hypoglycemia; and insomnia.
Of the American people tested, 70% have
low serotonin levels. The six NTs that naturopathic
doctors commonly measure are:
serotonin, GABA, dopamine, norepinephrine
(NE), epinephrine (EPI), glutamate.
GABA is the most important and widespread
inhibitory neurotransmitter in the
brain. Its main job is to counter the brain’s
most common excitatory neurotransmitters:
NE, Epi and glutamate.
Serotonin works with GABA to prevent
over-excitation, reduce pain, induce: relaxation,
quality sleep, good mood, and
calmness under stress. Optimal serotonin
levels provide balance and equilibrium, both
biochemically and emotionally. A stressful
lifestyle, poor diet, and plentiful stimulants
like caffeine, can contribute to the above
symptoms, as well as blood sugar swings,
rage and bulimia.
Dopamine has many brain functions, including
motivation and good mood, pleasure,
focus, cognition, sleep and learning. Low
dopamine can contribute to: low motivation to
pursue dreams, social anxiety, attention deficit
(hyperactivity) disorder and depression.
Norepinephrine is found within the central
nervous system and functions as an excitatory
neurotransmitter, responsible for our
drive, ambition, alertness, focus and longterm
memory.
Epinephrine (adrenalin) functions both as a
neurotransmitter and hormone. It is a “fight
or flight” hormone, and plays a central role
in a short-term stress reaction. Chronic
stress may initially raise EPI, but eventually,
exhausts the adrenal glands.
Glutamate is an amino acid neurotransmitter
- the most common excitatory neurotransmitter
in the central nervous system
- powerfully stimulating neuronal tissue. It
is also involved in learning and memory.
Excess glutamate is dangerous to nervous
tissue, causing excitotoxicity, neuron damage
and death.
COVER STORY
By Dr. Donna
How Happy
Are Your Feet?
Why Trusting a Podiatrist is
a Safe Solution to Foot Care.
hen California legislation
recently was
considering removing
p o d i a t r y visits from Medical benefits,
diabetics would have suffered the
most,” Brian Keller, Doctor of Podiatric
Medicine (D.P.M.) who practices in
Lincoln, CA. said. His office is located
at 1530 Third St, Suite 208.
“They would have ended up with untreated
diabetic complications. Foot ulcers are
common with diabetes and they’re difficult
to heal. When left untreated, they can
end up resulting in amputations.”
Fortunately, the American Podiatric
Medical Association stepped in and prevented
that from happening.
Why Trusting a Podiatrist is a
Safe Solution to Foot Care
Many people may not know that podiatrists
are the true specialists for the foot
just as dentists are the true specialists
for the teeth. A podiatrist is board-certified
in podiatric medicine and podiatric
surgery. Just like Dr. Keller attended the
California College of Podiatric Medicine
for four years and then a residency
for two years, other podiatrists undergo
similar training.
After training, podiatrists gain hospital
privileges to perform surgery.
“The difference between a podiatrist and
an orthopedist is that podiatrists only
treat the feet. Orthopedists treat the back,
knee, hip, and foot,” Dr. Keller said.
“When you need treatment for the feet
– for hammertoes, bunions, plantar fasciitis,
plantar warts, toenail fungus, and
other foot issues, you have a choice.
You can take advantage of the era of
subspecialties and see a podiatrist who
really is best qualified to treat the feet.
The key to successful outcomes in these
conditions is repetition on the part of
the physician. Whoever has done the
procedure the most will be the most
successful,” he said.
Podiatric Advances in
Technology Mean Less Pain,
Quicker Healing
Dr. Keller uses the most advanced techniques
in podiatric medicine, which he
admits are quite exciting.
“Years ago, hammertoe surgery left pins
sticking out of toes which could have
caused infection. Now, there are techniques
that bury the pin in the toe. Better
alignment results and pin infections are
non-existent. The new pin is absorbed by
the body’s tissues.”
Plantar fasciitis is another condition,
one that affects about 2.5 million Americans.
One innovative technique called
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or
ECSW utilizes 20,000 shock waves over
a 12-minute time span to create a microtrauma
to the heel. The new mini trauma
then signals the body to grow new blood
vessles to the area to heal it.
“I don’t recommend surgical severance
of the plantar fascia except in rare cases.
In this new technique, there is no cutting
and the procedure is done on an outpatient
basis. The patient walks out of the
post op and can continue daily activities
as usual...It’s now covered by Medicare
and insurance plans,” Dr. Keller said.
Podiatric surgeons now have an
updated procedure for neuroma...
Instead of cutting out the swollen nerve,
leaving an area of numbness and the possibility
of a stump neuroma, podiatrists
are able to use minimally-invasive surgery
to release the offending ligament,
and thus, decompress the nerve. The
nerve is not cut out of the body, but released
from it’s confinement. The procedure
is similar to a carpal tunnel release
performed by orthopedists in the wrist.
... at the last podiatric convention, a new treatment was unveiled
using a laser to treat the nail fungus...
Even Toenail Fungus Methods
Have Improved
In the past, those with toenail fungus
may have taken Lamisil, a prescription
medication once daily for 3 months, and
waited up to a year for healing to occur.
Although a 75% cure rate is customary,
liver function must be monitored.
“Now at the last podiatric convention, a
new treatment was unveiled using a laser
to treat the nail fungus. The laser has a
prearranged depth of penetration and
sweeps across the nail, killing the fungus
in a 15 minute procedure,” Dr. Keller said.
To create an orthotic, a shoe store takes
an impression of the foot in two dimensions,
such as a wet foot impression. The
problem is that the foot and arch are 3-D.
“The foot needs to be held in a correct
position and a plaster cast is made of
the foot. The orthotic is then made
into a form fit for the shoe and made
out of the right material when a podiatrist
makes it. At the shoe stores,
they go to the back of the store and
pull it out of a bin in the back. You
get more support from a custom-made
orthotic that’s been professionally
made,” Dr. Keller said.
Common Foot & Toe Terms
HAMMERTOES – when the outer two joints
of the toe bend downward to look like a hammer
or a claw.
PLANTAR FASCIITIS – inflammation of the
tendons of the bottom of the feet
NEUROMA – a condition where a growth of
tissue affects one of the nerves of the foot
ORTHOTIC – a device that’s inserted into
the shoe to correct the gait
“There’s an 88% satisfaction rate with
the new procedure...there’s a difference
between cure rate and satisfaction
but the result is a significant difference
in the shape and color of the nail,” he
continued. The procedure is fast, effective,
safe, and without the risk of side
effects. Unfortunately, it is not currently
covered by insurance.
Bunion surgery is very accurate now,
according to Dr. Keller. And he has
plenty of additional techniques for other
foot problems.
“A lot of times people ask me what they
could have done to save their feet later
in life. It’s impossible to follow them
around with a camera and know for sure,
but the best prevention for most people
is arch support. This can alleviate bunions
and hammer toes,” he said.
Should You Get Orthotics?
Dr. Keller is an advocate of using professional
orthotics, not standard orthotics
that many shoe stores offer. He believes
that arch support is a plus and it can fit
into any shoe these days.
Guidelines for Shoe Shopping
Some people can walk through life in
bare feet. Most people need foot care
at one time or another. Choosing shoes
is important.
“Sturdy non-bendable shoes may not be
so bad. They will support the weight of
the body and result in less strain on the
back, hip, and knee...To find a stable
shoe, grab it by the heel. Push the toes
into a table; you want the shoe to break
(crease) at the area where the toes would
normally bend, not in the middle of the
shoe. You shouldn’t be able to make
the heel of the shoe touch the toe of the
shoe,” said Dr. Keller.
His general rule of thumb is that if you
can wring it out like a wet washcloth, it’s
too flexible. “If your feet hurt, you hurt
all over! Let me get you back on your
feet,” Dr. Keller says.
Don’t go through life with foot pain
thinking there is no solution. Dr. Keller
has been treating feet in Northern California
for over ten years. For more information,
call him at 916 434-6410.
Dr. Keller, DPM
Note to Parents:
Do you have a child with flat
feet? You can tell by checking
the footprint of your child
as he or she walks out of the
pool. If the footprint appears
flattened, as if there is no
arch, you may want to contact
Dr. Keller. An implant can
be inserted in one of the foot
joints that helps the arch develop
normally. No screws are
needed and the procedure only
takes 15 minutes.
Bountiful Harvest?
What Does Yours Look Like?
W
hen we think of the term “harvest”,
many people relate it to
food from their garden or food collectively
grown from a geographic area.
Here in California, we’re quite lucky to
have a plentiful harvest and the results
are seen every week at the Farmers’
Markets. So many other cities in the
nation have a much shorter growing
season and less variety in crops. Our

sense of gratitude is profound when we
think about this.
Financial Harvests? Where?

But there are other harvests we should
be concerned about. In today’s times,
many people are fretting about their
financial harvests. They may have experienced
a cut in their 401K plans, retirement
plans, or maybe have been slashed
from the payroll at their job. Clearly,
there’s tension in the air about finances.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
The Big Harvest Experiment
Last month, I was inspired to gather
with friends determined to get through
this time period with a financial harvest.
By simply reviewing one Biblical
scripture on finances and prosperity a
day for 12 days, amazing things started
to happen in each of our lives. People
who owed us money started paying it
back. Commission checks arrived in the
mail. Job project opportunities appeared

seemingly out of nowhere. Relationships
improved where there had been no
hope before. New relationships showed
up to open new paths. People reported
a closer relationship with their Maker.
A feeling of peace and contentment in
today’s troubled times. All this happened
in 12 days.
Some had to change specific beliefs
that were holding them back. Others
had to learn a new skill and I taught
them how to write autoresponder
emails to their client list, a skill I
picked up a few years ago. Whether
they saw actual money add to their account
or not, all felt the changes came
from outside themselves as if they
were directed by a higher force.
The group wanted to continue receiving
the emails with additional scriptures for
at least the next month. And just today,
a report came in from one member
about a brand new job opportunity and a
new mate. The stories of amazing transformations
continue to appear.
What You Focus On, You Will Get
It’s no secret that what we focus on
in our mind, we will get returned to
us one hundredfold. If we spend our
waking hours concentrating on how
finances are dwindling, we get more of
the same: less and less finances. Focus
on all the bad relationships around us
and get more bad relationships. They
seem to be attracted to us. We can easily
change our focus to gratitude and
prosperity. If there are dozens of prosperity
promises in the Bible, in fact,
more scriptures on finances than any
other topic, why not focus on them?
Just to see what happens.
Just because many are suffering right
now doesn’t mean it has to include
you. It doesn’t mean it has to be permanent
and things will never get better.
And it doesn’t mean there aren’t other
ways to prosper.
Try the Harvest Experiment for yourself.
See what happens in 12 days.
All from focused on the Biblical Word
a few times a day and then prayed for
each other in the group. Amazing, they To get the Biblical verses we
reported.

Amazing, that is, that we used in a daily email, email me at
didn’t think of it before.
Why Tooth Whitening
Toothpastes
Don’t Work
HEALTH
If you’re looking for that dazzling smile
and want to achieve it with teeth whitening
toothpastes, better save your money.
“They’re worthless,” Kira Watson,
registered dental hygienist at the office
of Fausto R. Prato, DDS located in
Stockton said in a private interview. “If
you want white teeth, the professional
kits or professional in-office whitening
treatments work. The problem (with the
toothpastes) is that they can be extra
abrasive and wear away the enamel
layer, which will then make teeth whitening
more difficult.”
But there’s more to this story about why
they don’t work.
Tooth Anatomy
The connection of abrasiveness to teeth
whitening is actually simple but you
have to understand a little about tooth
anatomy first.
The structure of a tooth has three primary
layers: the crown or enamel, the dentin,
and the pulp. The crown or enamel
of the tooth is the white visible part, and
it’s composed of a material harder than
bone. In fact, tooth enamel is the hardest
material found in the body.
The dentin layer is a yellow layer. This
layer is composed of tiny tubules that
connect to the nerve within the pulp.
It’s a sensitive layer, that is, sensitive to
what you do to the tooth.
Combine the exposure of the dentin
part of the tooth with normal everyday
stains on the enamel from coffee,
tea, chocolate, pomegranates,
blueberries, blackberries and other
foods and you have the recipe for
discolored, yellow teeth.
If you use a very abrasive toothpaste
that wears away the enamel
quicker in an attempt to remove
stains, you end up with a formula
for more stains that are harder
to remove.
And the big problem is that
many of the top teeth whitening
toothpastes are in fact,
abrasive.
Check out this Consumer Reports
Health chart of abrasiveness
and stain removal ranking
20 products on the market.
(Source: www.Consumer-
ReportsHealth.org) The M
stands for medium abrasiveness,
How Teeth Whitening Toothpastes Affect
Tooth Anatomy
As we age, our enamel starts to wear thin.
The more you expose the dentin layer, the
more you expose the yellow color of that
layer, the dentin, of the tooth.
What’s a Consumer to Do?
To answer this question, your dentist is
really the best resource. However, there
are some recommendations you can
start initiating right now:
1 Since toothpastes are the lowest on
the totem pole of effectiveness at creating
whiter teeth, use a low abrasive
toothpaste and save your enamel.
2 Brush your teeth immediately after
eating. This will remove any stains that
resulted from eating or drinking foods
that have pigments that cause staining.
3 Consider professional teeth whitening
kits or professional laser teeth whitening.
These work quickly and often result
in teeth that are 7 to 10 shades lighter.
Then continue your good habits #1 and
#2 to maintain the brightness.
As the dental hygienist said, “Teeth whitening
toothpastes don’t work. They just
remove the external stains. When they’re
abrasive, they can cause problems. Your
best bet is to use the professional bleaching
agents obtained from the dentist.
They’re stronger and get the job done.”
MENTAL HEALTH
Fine in
2009
Can you believe it’s that time again
when we look forward to the new
year in wild anticipation. But what will
the New Year hold?
By Mary Jane Popp
I checked in with Psychic/Numerologist
Esther Bear. She’s got our numbers.
We started a new cycle last year that
controls money, power, big business,
government etc. This cycle runs through
2016. Every year tells what the important
influences are so life will be easier.
Last year we started with new goals and
ambitions. So, in 2009, plant the seeds
of your future and watch them grow in
the next few years. If you planted those
ideas last year, they could culminate this
year. Now you can let the opportunities
come to you. This year, unlike last year,
you do not have to be aggressive. Let
partnerships come to you. Just be patient.
Things can go slow at times. Hang
in there. If they do not come to fruition
this year, look out next year!
Here’s the 2009 plan:
JANUARY: Remind everyone what
your goals are. Time to express yourself.
Take up a creative endeavor.
FEBRUARY: No changes. Keep that
nose to the grindstone. Make plans for
next month’s changes.
MARCH: If you planned well last
month, now you can make those changes.
Make those calls and contacts that
benefit you. Take a mini vacation. Will
do you good.
APRIL: If your goals have something to
do with community service, now is the
time to make contacts to help you...parties,
social gatherings etc.
MAY: Slow down month. Body and
brain not connected. Take up studies
to help achievements. Quiet time and
reflection.
JUNE: Offers of money and work can
come. Get the offers in writing. Offers
can be elusive. Don’t trust verbal
contracts.
JULY: Study what you have done so far.
Throw out everything not useful.
AUGUST: Do what you did last year.
Be more aggressive and let everyone
know what you want to achieve.
SEPTEMBER: Kick back and wait for
things to come to you. Watch for accidents
because of lack of concentration.
OCTOBER: Repeat January. Keep
calling contacts and talking about your
dreams. But get things in writing.
NOVEMBER: Same as February. Let
things just happen. You may be error
prone. No major changes or decisions.
Make plans.
DECEMBER: Same as March. Make
changes. Replace what’s not working.
Take another mini vacation to clear your
head and refresh ideas.
Finally, next year...2010...is the highlight
of last year and this year. Next
year is a time of expansion and selfawareness.
Anything you did not get
this year, you should get next year if
you planned and executed properly.
Sooooo, keep your head on straight. Do
not believe everything you hear unless
you check it out. Ger things in writing
and avoid that spacey feeling that can
surely cause accidents. 2009 is your
cross-over year to an enjoyable and fun
next year.
So there you have it. Follow the plan
and feel fine in 2009! A HAPPY AND
BLESSED NEW YEAR TO YOU AND
YOURS!!!
SPORTS / FITNESS
Tennis Elbow in Middle-aged Women:
What else is going on here?
elbow need not be a stubborn
condition to heal. Finding and treating
the underlying causes can get rid of
the problem for good.
Classic tennis elbow is a problem
with the tendon of the wrist extensor
muscle that attaches at the elbow. A
tendon is what attaches the muscle
to the bone. There will be pain at the
elbow when you bend the wrist back.
People can develop tennis elbow after
using the muscle too much, such as
when playing tennis, or gardening.
Middle-aged women are particularly
prone to this condition.
Problems at the wrist, elbow, shoulder
or neck can all contribute to tennis elbow,
as well as overuse of the muscles
of the wrist or poor biomechanics.
Actual Clients...
not Supermodels.
Physical treatment can include: exercises
to strengthen the muscles; looking
at biomechanics such as changing your
tennis swing or gardening technique
(e.g. using your body more than your
arm); taking some stress off the muscle
by using a tennis elbow brace and loosening
your tennis racquet strings; and
the use of modalities such as heat and
electrical machines to promote healing.
Mobilizations and manipulations can
also help.
Acupuncture Perspective on
Tennis Elbow
In Traditional Chinese Medicine there
are twelve main lines of energy that
flow through the body. In tennis elbow
the line of energy that goes through the
elbow is not flowing properly – either
the energy is blocked or there
isn’t enough energy.
Also, the tendons of middle
age women are “drying out
“ (or in Chinese lingo,
their “Yin” is decreasing),
as they get older.
In Western medicine this
corresponds to the hormonal
changes happening
in and around menopause.
Acupuncture treatment aims at
increasing the Yin for the whole
body and moving the energy
around the elbow. The Yin
line of energy responsible for
tendons of the body is called the
Liver Yin meridian, so increasing
and moving the energy in the Liver
meridian is a must.
Can Emotional Issues Contribute?
Some experts believe that we get
physical symptoms because of a
build up of unresolved emotional
issues. Picture a garbage can
filling up with mental “stuff”-
when it starts overflowing
that is when we get physical
symptoms.
How can we discover what
the emotional issues are?
In Chinese Medicine, the body, the mind,
and the spirit are all connected and all
are important. We know that the Liver
meridian is involved in tennis elbow
because of the tendons and the Liver meridian
is associated with anger issues.
People from India discovered energy
centers of the body, which they called
chakras. Traditionally there are seven
main chakras. The arms are an extension
of the Heart Chakra, the fourth
chakra. The Heart Chakra is associated
with love and relationships.
Is the patient angry with someone?
Does she not have enough “elbow
room”? Is someone irritating her? Is
repressed anger holding the patient back
from moving on with her life? What
was happening in her life just before
noticing the elbow pain?
Is the patient angry with herself?
Treatment for emotional issues starts
with getting insight into the problem.
When you don’t let the anger go it stays
in the body. Neuro-Linguistic Programming
is one form of treatment that helps
resolve emotional issues.
Think Outside the Box for Health
Problems
In my experience, combining
physical therapy, acupuncture and a
ddressing emotional issues, works wonders
in helping to heal a patient who has
tennis elbow.
SAFETY
By Dr.Donna
Why Mumbai Terrorism
Increases Our Vigilance for Safety
The recent terrorist attack on Mumbai
came as quite a shock to the
entire world. In this article, we find out
inside information about the incident
from William Cooper, anti-terrorism
expert and author of the book, Suicide
Terror: Confronting the Fear, and discuss
your personal safety.
Q: Mr. Cooper, did the professionals
on the anti-terrorism team in India, the
U.S. or any other country expect what
happened in Mumbai with the multifoci
attack?
A: There had been credible intelligence
shared with the Indian government, and
in some cases, the hotels themselves.
Q: Would you say that terrorist attacks
have been pretty predictable up til this
point?
A: They are predictable in the sense
that in many cases the terrorists themselves
will tell their intended victims
they will be attacked. They just don’t
tell them when or how the attack will
occur. In the years since 9/11, intelligence
agencies have grown their information
sharing to a fairly successful
level. In the cases of the United States,
there are very few people who don’t
believe we will be attacked again, so
in that sense attacks are predictable.
The when, where, and how are always
the unknowns. What is known is that
the terrorists continue to use the type
of attacks that have been successful for
them, so we may be aware that this may
be how we are attacked.
In the case of Mumbai, the attack paradigm
shifted significantly. We have been
used to the large scale, single event type
attack, such as a vehicle-borne improvised
explosive device or suicide bombers.
In Mumbai, the method of attack
shifted to a commando style, multiple
target approach, and while eenroute
to the targets, the terrorists attacked a
number of other venues. The intent was
to create considerable chaos and confusion,
supposedly to divert attention
away from the main targets, which were
the hotels and Jewish Center. This type
of attack makes it very difficult for first
responders to coordinate and react.
Q: So what you’re saying is that by
watching what the terrorists do in other
countries, it’s a good indication of what
they’ll try here?
A: Absolutely. What you see happening
overseas is likely the type of attacks we
will face in the United States.
Q: Many people seem to believe that
these attacks only occur elsewhere.
What’s your take on this? Isn’t it true
that the reason why these attacks aren’t
occurring here is because our Homeland
Security and citizens are keeping a
watchful eye?
A: Americans in many cases, due to their
own lives and commitments, do not pay
considerable attention to overseas attacks.
They make the news for a short
time, and it’s on to the next issue. 9/11
changed the fact that we can be attacked
here, but we see little about the number
and type of attacks that were interdicted
in the US prior to and after 9/11.
One case, in fact, is very similar to the
Mumbai attack, which was stopped in
New York City in 1993.
The attacks that have been stopped
since 9/11 have not occurred largely due
to our intelligence and law enforcement
agencies, and certainly to the diligence
and enhanced awareness by many of
our citizens. They reported unusual or
suspicious events and stopped an attack.
Q: What are the problems that result
when several different places in a close
geographic area are attacked simultaneously?
While being careful not to go into too
much detail here, we’ll simply say that
in a multi-agency response there are a
number of issues that will always exist.
Responders have been, and are, working
on remediation, but with multiple targets
over a sizeable geographic area, the
logistics in response and management
are significant.
Q: From the perspective of a civilian,
what can be done if an attack like this
occurs in Sacramento?
Rajabai Tower, clock tower in South Mumbai.
A: Be prepared. While Sacramento is
not a target-rich environment like other
cities, its citizens and business operators
need to be prepared. You need to
have a plan. What will you do, where
will you go, how will you know your
family is ok? You may rest assured that
in a major attack, travel will be difficult,
communications via phone or cell
phone near impossible, and your ability
to get from one place to another seriously
compromised. For a complete set
of planning templates, visit www.ready.
gov. Everything one needs to create and
have a plan exists here.
Q: Any closing comments?
A: There are few reasonable people who
do not expect an attack in the United
States. There is nowhere that is not
exempt. Al Qaeda, for example, has
stated they want to hit America where it
feels safest. Its goals are simple - inflict
massive economic pain, cause mass
casualties,and create terror. The best
defense is preparation.
this very moment, the real answer, not
the appropriate/common sense answer?
Would you believe one of the top reasons
both men and women work out
is because of body image, and fear of
being rejected by those around them?
Many women would prefer to call in
sick at their place of employment rather
than show up without make-up, perfect
hair, the appropriate outfit, and right
accessories.
And men now visit beauty supply stores
and browse isles of products for their
hair, beard, skin, scalp etc. Why? Perhaps,
as a society we no longer judge
a person’s outward appearance by the
character that reveals itself in ones daily
words, attitudes, actions and behaviors,
but rather by the perfectly fit body, Gucci
sunglasses, Prada shoes, Coach purse,
Rolex watch and the Louis Vuitton bag
to carry it all in.
When did our vision change towards
how we view ourselves and our fellow
citizens? What are we missing by seeing
life only from on the surface? How
might our life change if we organized
our goals, our thoughts, and behaviors
around those things in life that enhance
not only the person we could become as
an individual, but also enhance the lives
of the persons around us?
When you examine your goals, the reasons
you workout, the job you go to every
day, how do these activities enhance
your life? How are you enhancing the
lives of the persons that are uniquely
placed around you? Do the activities
you engage in, the body you live in and
the people you share your life with fulfill
your inner longings? The desires of
your heart? Or are you holding on to,
or not participating in some activities
and relationships because it’s easy? Are
you staying in your current occupation,
because it pays the bills? Do you look
back to a period in your life when you
felt you were doing better than you are
right now? Or perhaps, the way you
envisioned your future would be in your
younger years, has not yet materialized
and you doubt your dreams will ever
come true?
All of us go through periods when life’s
responsibilities can seem particularly
burdensome, and our hopes and dreams
seem like something that become further
and further from our grasp. So how
do we get back on track and reclaim the
invincible dreams that we once believed
would come true?
First we must stop. Stop and take inventory
of your life right now. Many
dreams and goals never materialize
because they never get past the wishful
thinking and hopeful daydreaming
launching pad. Yet, if you were to write
down the attributes and skills you would
need to accomplish some of your greatest
dreams and goals, more than likely
you are more than qualified to reach a
successful outcome. So what’s the block
between wishful thinking and making
your inner dreams and goals a reality in
your life?
Spend some quality alone time with
yourself; ask yourself, knowing you
are equipped to move your goals and
dreams from the wishful thinking category
into a plan of action for success
what is hindering you from doing so?
Next, write out a personal inventory of
your special gifts, skills, education, and
personality. Write out your dreams, and
how you envision living your perfect
life. Armed with the above information,
put together a plan to begin to live your
dreams and take the first step today!
Need help charting a new course in your
life, organizing your priorities and developing
the motivation and momentum
you need to reach your heart’s desires?
Enlist the help of a Professional Life
Coach. A professionally trained coach
will partner with you to set meaningful
goals, create purposeful action steps,
1/2 OFF
your first individual session.
January Edition 2009

It’s easy to start a new exercise program
or a new diet program and impact
one’s health positively. But when
the improvement received from these
known health boosters is less than expected,
it’s time to look for other factors
that may be impacting health.
Over the last few decades, research
scientists not only from the EPA but
from major institutions worldwide
have confirmed the idea that hidden
dangers in the home can contribute to
poor health. These dangers occur not
only from not cleaning the house properly
but also from problems with home
construction or natural geography.
Below is a list of 12 of these
insidious dangers that will be
addressed in this series.
1. Radon
2. Electromagnetic radiation (EMR)
3. Asbestos
4. Lead in old plumbing and on paint
that is chipping
5. New carpeting
6. Dirty heating and air conditioning
units
7. Mold from water intrusion
8. Inadequate bathroom ventilation
9. Humidifiers with stagnant water
10. Little known sources of bacteria
uranium in rock, soil and well water. It
seeps into the home through cracks and
holes in the foundation. The gas passes
into the air you breathe and cannot be
seen, tasted or smelled. Radon is trapped
inside the home.
Radon is a leading cause of lung cancer
among non-smokers, causing 21,000
deaths per year (Source: EPA. 2003 Assessment
of Risks from Radon in Homes,
EPA #402-R–03-003) If you smoke and
your home has high radon levels, your
risk of lung cancer is especially high according
to the EPA.
Is Radon a Real Threat?
The EPA estimates that 1 out of every
15 homes in the U.S. has elevated radon
levels. Testing the home is the way to
discover if your home (or office) is affected.
Homes, schools and office buildings
should be tested and only takes a
few minutes of your time.
If your home’s radon level is 4 picocuries
per liter (pCi/L) or higher, you’ll need
to take action and protect your family
from this harmful gas. Radon reduction
systems are not too costly and can reduce
this hidden killer by up to 99%. Every
state has a governmental radon office for
qualified testers and information about
radon problems in schools, daycare and
childcare facilities as well as workplaces
in your area. In the Sacramento area, call
916-449-5674. (See www.epa.gov/radon)
How is Radon Testing
Accomplished?
Part 1
HEALTH & THE ENVIRONMENT
The EPA has designated January as National Radon
Action Month to increase the public’s awareness of
the health risks that arise from radon.
Put the testing device in a room frequented
often by household members
excluding the kitchen or bathroom, 20
inches above the floor away from drafts,
heat, humidity or exterior walls. Leave
the kit there undisturbed for the required
time period. Then reseal the package and
send it back to the lab. Your results will
be ready in a few weeks.
IF your water supply is the source of
contamination, a whole house filtration
system is the best solution. Radon is removed
from water by granular activated
carbon filters (GAC) or aeration systems;
however, GAC filters can collect radioactivity
and may be considered a toxic
waste. Discuss solutions with your state
radon office.
Our first hidden danger addressed
in this issue is Radon.
The EPA has designated January as National
Radon Action Month to increase
the public’s awareness of the health risks
that arise from radon.
What is Radon and How Does It
Affect Us?
Radon is a natural radioactive gas emanating
from the natural breakdown of
Testing is quite easy. Tests can be either
short-term (2 to 3 days up to 90 days)
or longer. Obtain a charcoal canister,
electret ion chamber, alpha track, continuous
monitor or a charcoal liquid
scintillation detector and test your home
for 90 days.
Close your windows and doors during
the test. Don’t bring in outside air from
fans or other devices; HVAC systems
are fine and may be turned on. Also,
don’t conduct the test during severe
storms or high winds.
My Home is High in Radon; Now
What?
If your home is found to be high in radon,
a soil suction radon reduction system
can be installed which is a vent pipe
system and fan that pulls radon from
beneath the house and vents it to the
outside. Combined with sealing foundation
cracks make this system more costefficient
and more effective. The EPA
recommends that you use a state-certified
and/or qualified radon mitigation contractor
to fix any radon problems.
Resources
• Order test kits from the National Safety
Council/EPA by phone by calling 1-
800-SOS-RADON (767-7236).
• Obtain EPA radon publications from the
number above or the Indoor Air Quality
Information Clearinghouse at 1-800-
radiation can affect your health.
What the Vet Looks
for during an Exam
When you want to keep your cat
healthy, a trip to your vet every
six months is ideal. What happens during
the examination and what is the vet
looking for?
The examination will include several
parts of the body.
An examination of the mouth, teeth and
gums will be performed to see if tarter
buiid-up warrants a dental cleaning.
This is very important because tarter
build-up can cause health problems if
left untreated, including painful gum
disease and tooth decay and even liver
and kidney disease.
Your vet will also check the eyes
and the ears for abnormalities or
possible parasites such as earmites,
which live on other areas of the
body....not just ears.
He or she will listen to your cat’s heartbeat
for possible murmurs and other
signs that something may be wrong with
the cardiovascular system. Listening to
the lungs for possible infection or even
asthma is next.
A thorough hand-search by palpitating
the abdominal area can help find any
tumors or cancerous growths, but it may
also uncover even a tapeworm.
The vet will also look through your
cat’s hair and examine the skin for possible
fleas or inflammation, or abnormal
growths. If needed, he or she will suggest
a flea treatment if you don’t already
have one.
Parasites? Why Test for Them?
It is a good idea to have a thorough test
for parasites done either before or after
the exam that your vet does.
The reason why it’s so important to have
this done is because fleas can cause tapeworms
which quickly destroy your pet’s
health and make it anemic. You’ll receive
special instructions on how to handle the
fecal specimen for the parasite test. Following
it is very important because some
parasites die quickly and require special
handling to detect them. A parasite test
should cover roundworm, hookworm,
tapeworm, whipworm, coccidia, giardia
and toxoplasmosis.
There are two types of roundworms:
Toxascaris leonina and Toxacara cati.
The method of infection depends on the
age of the cat. Adult cats can become
infected by eating rodents that have consumed
roundworm eggs passed by infected
cats, but it is more common for a
cat to become infected by eating the eggs
that are passed in the stools of cats that
are carrying mature egg-laying worms.
Unborn kittens can become infected
directly by the mother, soon after birth
while nursing from the mother or by ingesting
the parasite eggs orally as adults
do. When ingested eggs reach the intestine,
they mature in one of two ways:
1. Toxascaris leonina mature in the intestinal
walls.
2. Toxocara cati enter the intestine, then
migrate via the lymph system to the
liver, blood vessels and lungs. They
mature further in the lungs, then travel
up the windpipe to the throat, then
are swallowed, re-entering the intestine
to live as adults. Roundworms
rob their host of nutrition and can
cause death if left untreated. All kittens
should be treated for roundworm
as soon as the vet recommends.
The two most common types of hookworms
that affect cats are Ancylosoma
and Uncinria. These two can infect an
unborn kitten or affect them later on
while the kitten is nursing. Their eggs
hatch into tiny free-moving worms in
the environment with the ability to penetrate
the skin and feet of a cat to enter
its body. While the life cycle is similar
to the roundworm, the main damage is
done by the adult worms. They attach
directly to the intestinal wall and suck
large quantities of blood directly from
the vessels of the cat, causing severe
anemia often leading to death.
A cat or kitten with hookworm should
be treated immediately since the intestinal
walls are damaged by the worms;
the anemia causes serious health problems
as well.
Keeping Your Cat Healthy
Besides taking your cat to the vet and
obtaining regular parasite tests, be
sure to include plenty of TLC in the
life of your cat, Kittens and cats both
love to be nurtured. Some love being
talked to and make verbal sounds that
are much like they are talking, also.
Each meow or different sound means
something. Spend the time to really
get to know your little friend and you
will learn its language.
Always be sure to keep water changed
daily in clean containers.
Never allow your cat to eat moist food
that has set out for more than four hours
and totally change dry food when food
gets low, not adding fresh food over old.
Toxins can build up in the food.
Remember to keep the litter box sanitary.
Always use rubber gloves since
the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis is
not killed by soap and water and can be
transmitted to humans as well as other
animals while using “clean hands” to
handle food and at other times.
Cushing’s Disease
Tough to
Diagnose
in Dogs
Stealer’s muscles weakened. He
was sluggish and began having accidents
in the house. His belly sagged
and his hair was falling out. His owners
thought Stealer was just getting
older. By the time they asked their
veterinarian, Stealer had developed
diabetes and severe kidney problems,
in addition to his Cushing’s disease.
The condition is commonly caused by
tumor(s) in the pituitary gland. It is
difficult to diagnose, at best, typically
presenting with symptoms just like
Stealer’s. And just as Stealer’s owners
did, many people assume their dogs are
simply showing the signs of age.
Cushing’s does not cause bleeding,
pain, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures - or
any other symptom that would raise
alarm or call for a quick trip to the vet.
But left untreated, the disease can most
certainly be fatal. It will continue to
worsen, causing other disorders, such
as diabetes, kidney failure, congestive
heart failure, and infections of the ears,
eyes, bladder and skin
Bull Terriers, Silky Terriers, Yorkshire
Terriers, Dachshunds, Poodles (of any
variety) and Boston Terriers are considered
high-risk. The disease is most
commonly caused by tumors in the
adrenal or pituitary glands. There is
no cure, but treatment options usually
include drugs and/or surgical removal
of the tumor.
Female dogs are more susceptible to
adrenal gland tumors, while Cushing’s
appears more often in dogs that are
older than five.
A veterinarian can determine whether
your dog has Cushing’s with a simple
blood test. Given the variety of additional
conditions that Cushing’s can
cause, it is important to seek veterinarian
attention right away.
The drugs used to treat Cushing’s
include Ketoconazole, Anipryl and Lysodren.
The latter regulates the amount
of cortisol the body produces. Anipryl
restores the balance of chemicals in the
brain, often successfully, in an attempt
to decrease symptoms of Cushing’s
disease. Ketoconazole suppresses cortisol
secretions in the adrenal glands,
but is only effective in about 75 percent
to 80 percent of all cases.
Massage
IN SACRAMENTO
Where can you go for a great massage
in the Sacramento area? What
are the different types of massage you can
get? How do you know what type your
body needs? These are the questions we’ll
answer in this ongoing series on massage
in Sacramento.
Massage of the Month:
Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy
(AOBT) Massage
Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is a
trademarked form of massage performed
by a massage practitioner who
has been professional trained to utilize
their feet instead of their hands. While
using (2) parallel bars on the ceiling for
leverage and support, the therapists feet
glide over the body and can work out
trigger points and ‘kinks’ in your back,
arms and legs. While there are many
styles of barefoot massage, the bars and
the western application with lubricant
play a significant role of distinction
when it comes to Ashiatsu vs. Ashiatsu
Oriental Bar Therapy.
Traditional Ashiatsu treatments took
into consideration breathing patterns
and emotional states, and focused heavily
on diet. The work was always done
with the recipient clothed and on the
floor while the practitioner would use
hand and foot pressure to balance the
basic principals of chi.
Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is a
western barefoot massage technique using
deep compression effleurage strokes
that glide over the body that results
in deep relaxation and stimulate the
lymphatic system to release metabolic
waste products. Bars are used above
the head for support and balance and
lubricant is applied to the body.
Our overall rating: AOBT is a specialty
type of massage that is definitely one to
be checked out. If you want to feel the
benefits of three massages in the timeframe
of one massage, get this massage.
Rating: 10
Who chooses this form of massage:
• those who like, want or need deep
massage
• athletes, especially golfers and tennis
players that create torque in their back
muscles
• those who feel good after getting the
trigger points worked on
• those looking for benefits beyond that
of ‘regular’ massages
• those who use computers in their work
and store unusual amounts of tension
and trigger points between and under
the shoulder blades
• those with chronic low back, neck and
shoulder pain
Where to find it in Sacramento:
You’ll love Amanda’s charming personality.
Your session starts with jasmine
of relaxation with soothing music.
Amanda’s method of AOBT combines
hot stones to melt painful trigger points,
long, sweeping Swedish strokes and
Thai stretches for an amazing experience.
At one point in the session, she’ll
place her feet on your shoulders and
use her hands to massage your neck,
making you feel as if you have several
people working on you simultaneously.
The session is like a complete integration
of body-mind techniques that leave
you wondering what will happen next.
You’ll feel considerably lighter and happier
afterwards.
Christina is one of 9 world trainers for
all levels of AOBT massage certification.
See www.deepfeet.com for more
info about her upcoming classes. In the
session she offers, you’ll feel as if your
mind is following her feet the entire
time. It’s as if each muscle will begin to
expect and long to feel the deep compression
pressure to get relief.
Christina follows a sequence of warmup
effleurage technique, palpation to
insure safety of the feet on the body,
seated movements using massage from
her hands and feet, and then compression
with her feet on both the front and
back of the body. The use of both feet
on your body simultaneously is a vastly
different feeling than a practitioner using
only one foot.
Two footed advanced techniques
she’ll use:
1) Ashi-Anma – a movement where her
heel is pushed into the muscle while her
toes pull the muscle back. This feels
like a rolling /rocking motion, almost
like cradling a baby.
2) Butterfly movement – a more powerful
stroke where two feet create a push/
pull/pumping all the way down the major
muscles along the spine. Once at the
lumbar area an intoxicating ‘Ruthie’s
Wave’ spreads back and fourth between
the lower back area and the sacrum.
These are incredible feelings. Christina’s
exceptionally sweet voice adds to
the atmosphere. You’ll love the benefits
you receive from this type of massage
and feel great for days!
and sip on wine, water, champagne or
tea. With DeAnna’s advanced certification,
she blends the fusion science
of AOB with movement, healing and
rhythm. The massage will feel like a
seamless, flowing barefoot dance of
myofascial release. At one point during
the session, you’ll feel as if she’s dripping
a continual stream of hot soothing
oil onto your back but in reality she’s
using a towel.
DeAnna uses both feet for the majority
of your massage and you’ll feel your
muscles surrender easily to the pressure
without feeling pain. She combines
chakra balancing, energy work and meridian
flow massage techniques into the
experience. You’ll leave with a strong
deep sense of who you are, a greater
range of motion and a sense of peace.
Precautions: Do not go to a therapist
who is not certified in this method but
says that they can perform it. Training
prevents the safety of the person getting
the massage as well as the therapist.
NUTRITION
By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski
Food Research
Straight from the Mouth
of the Industry
Another Fruit Found
to Benefit Health
The accepted test used to determine antioxidant
power of a food or supplement is
the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity
(ORAC) test, created by scientists at
the National Institute of Aging and the
National Institutes of Health. This test has
been used frequently as the food industry
focuses its efforts on bringing foods with
high antioxidant levels to the market.
Historically, researchers first reported
that strawberries and blueberries were
high in antioxidant power in the late
1980s and early 1990s, enough to help
improve brain function. The ORAC
values of strawberries and blueberries
are 1002 and 2906 respectively for the
juices (www.ORACvalues.com).
About the same time, the noni fruit
became known for its great stress reduction
properties, antioxidant properties,
detoxifying properties, and ability to
improve digestion. The ORAC value of
noni juice depends on what the different
company adds to the noni; the range is
150 up to 1800 according to Brunswick
Laboratories (www.healthyminerals.
com/vitale_letter.html).
Next came the Ninxgia wolfberry, a
Chinese berry that improved vision
and skin and had antioxidant power
with a punch. Its ORAC value is 3472;
Ningxia Red juice, 4214 (www.webdeb.
com). The wolfberry is also called the
goji berry, which hit the market hard in
marketing efforts and cost pretty penny!
Shortly thereafter, manufacturers started
bottling pomegranate juice as an aide
for the prostate and cardiovascular
system, immune-modulating activity,
protects the pancreas, an antioxidant,
reducing blood pressure and dental
plaque, high in pantothenic acid and
with an ORAC value of about 2341
(www.ORACvalues.com).
In the last few years, the Brazilian
acai berry emerged from unknown
status to the top of the list for berry
antioxidant power with a rating of
161,400 for the freeze-dried version
to the ORAC test (www.OracValues.
com). One has to wonder if the freezedried
versions of other fruits would be
just as high.
As food manufacturers continue to
investigate little-known fruits and vegetables
that can be tapped into for market
share, expect additional products
to crop up. One could be the Indian
gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica), discovered
by New Jersey-based Natreon’s
Calcutta facility in India to have
antioxidant activity high enough to
inhibit the free radical activity caused
by smoking and exposure to secondhand
smoke in a rat study published in
Pharmacology Online.
The fruit contains low molecular weight
gallo-ellagi tannoids that were more effective
than some multivitamin/minerals
designed to overcome oxidative stress.
(Isn’t nature always better than manmade
anyway?)
Indian gooseberry was effective in the
studies for several reasons:
• it inhibited lipid peroxidation
• the body’s production of catalase,
superoxide dismutase, and glutathione
peroxidase enzymes, which
are major players in the free radical
quenching that occurs in the body,
were boosted.
• chemical constituents of the gooseberry
extract were found to control the
production of the enzyme responsible
for GSH, the antioxidant found in the
lungs that decreases with smoking.
• tannoids of Indian gooseberry produced
a vitamin C-like effect in the
body without being oxidized
The extract used by the industry, called
Capros, is produced by Natreon. Major
beverage companies around the world
are now evaluating it for its usefulness.
Food Color Determines
Phytonutrient
Composition
Expect more marketing from the food
industry also about how different colors
of fruits and vegetables are tied to health
benefits, according to industry insider
Ewa Hudson at the Healthy Foods Summit
in London in Oct. of last year and
reported by Food & Drink Europe.
Kellogg’s has already started this type of
marketing in the U.S. and many companies
are also using terms such as “acaired”
or tying pomegranate to ‘red’ tonics.
One company, Kagome, released a color
wheel as part of a health awareness
campaign, stressing that:
• red means lycopene and capsanthin
content
• yellow/orange means beta-carotene
and beta-cryptoxanthin
• white means allicin and flavonol
• blue/purple means anthocyanins and
quercetin
• green means chlorophyll and lutein
The health and wellness industry is a $500
billion industry worldwide now with color
foods valued at $483 billion in 2007, up
42% since 2002. Organic foods grew fastest
at 86% between 2002 and 2007.
more consumers demand new exotic
flavors, some of them are actually
taking hold of their tongues and taste
buds and not letting go of the rush
they get from the new flavors. Here’s
a list of some of those flavors:
• a new tomato/mango flavor created by
Atlanta-based GSB Flavor Creators
and 20 other companies in the U.S. in
the last 2 years
• Adagio Moments Yogurt Drink in
Portugal, blending flavors of chocolate
chips, strawberries and chili peppers
into the yogurt.
• vanilla ice cream sweetened with papaya
and flavored with basil, created
by Bell Flavors & Fragrances
• pairing the Moroccan spice ras el hanout
with apricot on toasted pine nuts
• pairing the Asian citrus fruit yuzu with
spicy African ginger in a sorbet
What will your taste buds experience today?
Thinking about Getting
Tooth-Colored
Fillings or Sealants?
Better Think Again
By Dr. Donna
For the past year, the media has reported
on the harmful chemical bisphenol-
A, also known as BPA. This chemical
leaches out of hard plastic baby bottles.
Because the young bodies of babies are
immature and unable to detoxify BPA,
the health risks of BPA to children is
greater than the risks to adults.
BPA presents a paradigm to toxicity
studies: even low levels of BPA can be
problematic, with studies showing that
BPA may be one of the few chemicals
that is more toxic at lower doses.
In over 100 studies, BPA has been
linked to:
• altering cell-to-cell signaling pathways
on the cell surface to allow calcium
efflux in cells
• persistent changes to breast tissue
• permanent changes to the genital tract
• decreased antioxidant enzymes
• increased prostate weight
• increased aggression
• earlier puberty
• breast cells predisposed to cancer
• decreased testosterone levels
• insulin resistance
• decreased maternal behaviors
• damage to eggs and chromosomes
• reversed the normal sex differences in
the brain structure and behavior
• hyperactivity
• disruption of 200 genes
• spurs the formation and growth of fat cells
While much of the media focuses on
BPA emanating from plastic bottles
marked “7” on the triangle on the bottom
of the bottle, there are three other
sources of this health-ruining chemical:
1.tooth-colored dental fillings. The FDA
reported 50% of the fillings can be
composed of bisphenol-A in 2004.
2.sealants used to protect the molars of
developing children.
3.epoxy resin coatings on cans such
as tuna, canned fruits and canned
vegetables
Bisphenol-A is produced in the U.S. at
the rate of close to one billion pounds
a year. In one Center for Disease Control
study, the chemical was found in
95% of the serum of 400 adults tested
and identified in water, soil, the air,
and in plastics.
The solution to preventing BPA ingesion
is simple: use glass or stainless
steel containers instead of plastic, use
fresh and frozen foods, avoid canned
foods, and reduce sugar consumption
that causes tooth decay.
why the FDA is downplaying the
health-destroying effects of BPA, what
foods are high in BPA, and other facts
about the chemical, download the free
Soccer Skills
How To
Improve Your
Weaker Foot
Improving your weak foot takes a serious
amount of time and hard work for
results to start to show. There’s no doubt
that the best players in the world have almost
equal ability with both feet. They can
perform dummies, tricks and pass efficiently with
both feet giving them more options and opportunities
when they have possession of the ball. Being able to use both feet is a skill
that every modern footballer needs to have.
There is no real secret to improving your weaker foot other than hard work in
your soccer training. As a player you need to be able to dribble with both feet
giving you the sense of unpredictability against defenders. It allows you to
beat defenders either using your left or right foot.
To improve your weaker foot ball control you can do simple drill is such as little
cuts, any kind of touches on the ball with your weaker foot is improving it.
To accelerate the process of improving your weaker foot you need to perform
dribbling drills such as little cuts around any kind of objects. To perform this
you dribble the ball touching the ball with the inside of the foot with your
weaker foot then with the outside of foot with the weaker foot and repeating
this is in a continuous motion. You can then create a variations such as 2
touches with the inside foot and 2 touches with the outside of the foot. Another
one is two touches with the inside of the foot and one touch with the outside
of the foot. There are many variations to this drill and it’s your hard work that
will make these drills pay off.
To improve passing with your weaker foot you simply have to use your
weaker foot. This can be done by either grabbing a mate and simply passing
the ball in different styles to each other, while learning and maintaining skills
with your weaker foot. Or if you do not have the opportunity to grab a friend
you can always find a wall and practice passing the ball and receiving the ball
with the wall. It’s important when using the wall that you pick a consistent
spot and try to hit it on a consistent basis. It’s crucial that you learn not only to
pass the ball along the ground with your weaker foot, but to learn to chip the
ball and practice your long passes. It’s crucial that you do not become a onefooted
player as this will make you predictable.
THE NATURAL BOOKSHELF
Book Review:
Zero Limits.
The Secret Hawaiian System for
Wealth, Health, Peace and More
by Joe Vitale and Ihaleakala Hew Len, Ph.D.
2007 John Wiley & Sons
Joe Vitale is a well-known internet
marketing guru. What’s he doing
writing a book on health?
He became fascinated and almost obsessed
with tracking down a psychologist
he called the world’s most unusual
therapist. The psychologist was unusual
because he had helped heal an entire
ward of mentally ill criminals without
ever seeing any of them professionally.
Within a period of about three years, the
ward closed down. This book explains
the author’s pursuit to find the psychologist
and discusses what he discovered
along the way to learning how to have
the power to make a significant impact
like the psychologist did.
And according to Joe Vitale, it was after
he himself used the five step process
mentioned in this book that his bank
account started multiplying without any
real intervention on his part, his sense
of peace improved drastically and his
health improved.
In the book, you’ll discover:
• why you can have all the positive
thoughts you want and still be broke.
• why letting your ego and conscious
mind decide what is best for you
doesn’t work and what is the alternative
• why New Age thinking is wrong about
the philosophy that whatever problems
you have in your life, it’s your fault
• a new concept of personal responsibility
• the simple phrase that transforms all
problems
• why your will and your intention really
should take a back seat to inspiration
...it was after he himself
used the five step process
mentioned in this book
that his bank account
started multiplying
without any real
intervention on his part...
This book is a must read for the next
year! Find out the answers to these
questions and you will definitely solve
a lot of your own problems in life and
discover health, wealth and peace. And
if you’re a health practitioner, you will
discover a brand new way of looking at
your patients!
