OUR MISSION The mission of the Boulder History Museum is to foster understanding and appreciation for the unique history of the Boulder region and the resourceful, innovative people who have chosen to live here — a living history that grows with each new generation. 2
April 2008 Dear Members and Friends of the Boulder History Museum, Organizations are always evolving and continuously striving to get better. They do that by making small improvements every day, and major ones periodically. The major advances often involve changes in focus and the reinvention of how the organization seeks to reach its goals. Over the last several years, the Boulder History Museum has made many incremental improvements through the hiring of highly capable staff, the development of quality exhibits and programs and improvements in the protection of our collection. We are now embarking on a significant leap in how we can accomplish our mission by investigating the possibility of a new museum for Boulder. The Board of Trustees envisions a new Boulder History Museum on the civic use pad next to the St. Julien Hotel. At this time it is only a vision, but the board and staff are working hard to turn it into reality. While we are approaching the project cautiously as responsible stewards of the Museum’s resources, we are excited about the possibilities that a new museum might provide. As you know, the Museum convened a Visioning Task Force last year to look at how we could best serve the Boulder region. Through community focus groups, brainstorming sessions and thoughtful discussions, we have developed some goals. These include: providing an accurate record of the community’s roots, illustrating the activities, events and people that made the Boulder region what it is today, suggesting a direction in which the community might be moving for the future, becoming a gathering place for discussions of contemporary issues, and serving as an educational resource for students and others to learn about the place in which they live. These are big goals which can be best met with a new facility, but there are other improvements underway as well. Watch for a new website, more interaction with members and friends and increased outreach to the community. The staff and board are working hard to make the Boulder History Museum more relevant to you. So get involved, tell us what you like (or don’t like) and what you want from your museum.
