TENDER 2011-T-09 System Maintenance Nelson Hydro Page 20 of 51
1. Megger Tests
Including the generator cables, and the leads to the surge arrester module.
2. Rotor Insulation Resistance Test
Including average “PI” value.
3. Rotor Pole Drop Test (Salient Rotor Pole Test)
This test may not give satisfactory results without the rotor removed from the
stator. We would still like the test performed until readings show unacceptable.
The rotor will not be removed during these tests.
4. Megger Stator Windings
Perform combined and individual phases tests.
5. Stator Insulation Resistance Test
This shall also include the average “PI” value.
6. Insulation Power Factor & “Tip-Up” Tests (Doble)
Tests shall also include inter-phase insulation checks.
7. Doble Tests of Surge Arresters
The arresters are metal oxide and will begin to operate very near their rated
voltage. Therefore, these tests shall be performed at 5kV.
8. Corona Probe Test
This is a measurement of the amount of slot discharge. If the initial tests indicate
a high number, then the contractor shall retest that slot. If the reading is still high,
then previous readings will be compared for trending to predict failure.
9. Air Gap Tests
Measurements of reasonable accuracy shall be taken to determine the position
of the rotor with respect to the stator. It was determined from previous tests that
the air gap is uneven, and we are trying to determine the reason for this. The
contractor shall bench mark the unit at its stopped position and record this either
by notes or diagram, and report the air gap at several stations. Ideally, each of
the poles should be measured, and we can determine the practicality of this, on
site.
The contractor shall provide a written report immediately upon completion of his
generator testing, and shall make recommendations to remedy abnormal test
results. We can supply past test results for these generating units, for the
contractor’s reference.
Oil Analysis Tests (Gas-in-Oil)
Nelson Hydro annually tests the condition of the oil in our bulk substation equipment,
by drawing a sample and shipping it to the contractor for analysis. The results
indicate the condition of the oil and the equipment. This analysis determines gas and
water content only, and does not include testing for PCB content.
The contractor must supply a standard syringe and sample bottle for each unit
sample required. Nelson Hydro will draw the samples.
Syringe sample – for gas-in-oil analysis
Bottle sample – for fluid analysis
Results must be based on the following standard testing criteria:
1. Colour (ASTM D1500)
2. Visual (ASTM D1524)
3. Dielectric Breakdown (ASTM D877)
TENDER 2011-T-09 System Maintenance Nelson Hydro Page 32 of 51
4. Acidity (ASTM D974)
5. Interfacial Tension (ASTM D971)
6. Power Factor @ 25 0 C (ASTM D924)
7. Specific Gravity (ASTM D1298)
8. Water Content (ASTM D1533)
9. Dissolved Gas-In-Oil Analysis (IEEE/ANSI C57.1041991)
The contractor must provide individual results sheets for each device: “certificate of
analysis”, clearly indicating the device type, Nelson Hydro equipment identification
number, and station identification. He must notify Nelson Hydro immediately if any of
the results are above or below safe levels, as set by Dornenburg test procedures.
The results of the testing may show a need to re-condition some bulk oil,
which would be handled separately. All of this sampling and testing work must
be completed before May 31.
Oil Re-conditioning Service
We may require the services of a qualified contractor to filter, de-gas and de-water
the bulk oil in our Substations. This will depend on the results of the oil analysis
samples, as provided by the contractor. This reconditioning procedure involves
having the contractor pump the equipment oil through his processing unit, until the
oil meets established IEEE standards.
These oil purifying procedures can be performed anytime between April 1st, &
September 30 for each maintenance year, and we can adjust our schedule to work
with the contractor. Equipment can be removed from service for the oil purification
process. The contractor must notify Nelson Hydro of proposed schedule of work.
The contractor must continue to monitor the condition of the oil as he is proceeding
with his work. His work is complete when the oil meets acceptable standards. The
contractor shall provide a written report on the “as left” oil condition, as soon as
practicable, upon completion of his re-conditioning work. Each oil test report shall be
on an individual report sheet for Nelson Hydro. We can supply trending results for
some of these units, for the contractor’s reference.
As noted in the included yearly maintenance plan, some equipment has been
designated for oil work. The latest oil sample analysis, in combination with trending
results will determine if this work is to proceed.
Waste Material Disposal
It shall be the responsibility of the contractor to remove any used oil filters and any
waste oil and contaminated material from site, including spent Fuller’s Earth. This
waste must be disposed of in a manner acceptable to current Federal and Provincial
regulations.
