AMTA Oregon News – 2
residential
Notes
by Nathan Nordstrom, LMT #7700
AMTA-OR President
The past twelve months have been one big opportunity of
growth for me. The birth of my daughter, the selling of
my business, development of new skills, and the operations
of the AMTA-Oregon chapter has kept me busy. I
have seen much growth in other people as well. Our members
are doing many great things in our communities. I am
motivated by their dreams, desires and goals.
The AMTA-OR board has put into action a plan to make
this member-driven organization focused on its members:
phone calls, activities, available education, our annual
meetings, and newsletters with surveys to find out what
you think are a few of the efforts put forward this past
year. I feel like this board has gone out of its way to make
sure you are represented in all our decisions.
With the end of another year, we are changing and growing
once again. We are hosting a Volunteer Luncheon on
Saturday April 9, at the Sweetbrier Inn & Suites in Tualatin,
just off I-5 in the Portland area. The day will begin at
10 a.m. with a pre-luncheon AMTA-OR board meeting,
followed by a noon luncheon open free of charge to all
AMTA members and massage therapy students. Meetings
will be held after the luncheon, ending at 5 p.m. This will
be an opportunity to build your resume, serve your fellow
massage therapists, and enjoy activities that could build
your massage practice.
I truly appreciate all the assistance that members have
given during past years, and I hope to continue seeing you
at AMTA-0R functions. Additionally, I would love to see
new faces that have a renewed energy and excitement for
service and massage therapy. Please join us on April 9.
Nathan Nordstrom, LMT #7700
President
Hello everyone, I would like to introduce
myself as your AMTA-OR Chapter
President. I have been at this post for
one year now, previously serving
AMTA-OR as third vice president. During
this time, I have found out many
interesting things about people I would
call the “movers and shakers” of this
industry. My ability to lead depends
on my ability to lead these knowledgeable
people. I have also found out a lot
about our state and the inner workings of
professional associations, governing
bodies (OBMT), education, and Roberts
Rules. By attending AMTA’s Community
Volunteer Orientation Program
(CVOP) and its National Convention, I
have communicated with many professionals
from other states who are in completely
different situations with their
governing bodies. By serving a committee
for the NCBTMB I found myself
serving our community in a completely
different way.
I have been an examiner for the Oregon
Board of Massage Therapists, and am
currently teaching massage at Ashmead
College in Tigard. My practice has varied
from resort spas, clinics, outcall,
owning my own spa, and currently I
am practicing out of a chiropractic office.
I believe that service is the beginning
of a fulfilling career. There’s no
better way to do that than to join with us
here at AMTA-OR.
Mike Blackmore, LMT #6637
1st Vice President
I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist
from 1998 to present. I graduated
from the University of Oregon with M.S.
in Athletic Training (1987). I am currently
co-owner of a full service hair
salon in Eugene, offering sports massage,
therapeutic massage, and insurance
billing. I serve as chairman of the Exam
Committee for the Oregon Board of
Massage Therapists. I have been a member
of AMTA since my licensure. I believe
that growth and success comes
through participation in your industry.
John Combe, LMT #7492, CCA
2nd Vice President/ Delegate
I would like to introduce myself as your
AMTA-OR 2nd Vice President. This is
year number two of a two-year term for
my position. In the first year I was excited
to learn all of the information about
AMTA, to better serve you, the members.
Attending AMTA’s Community
Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP)
and the National Convention, and taking
many leadership classes at both, has
helped a great deal. Being the Membership
Chair prior to my 2nd V.P. election,
members have been my focus from the
start, and will continue to be. Serving as
a Chapter Delegate the next two years I
will always "Remember the Members". I
have been a Professional Member the
last six years, in which a lot has changed
in the profession at both State and National
levels.
I am also involved with the Oregon
Board of Massage Therapists, serving
on the Education and Exam committees
and helping with the exam process. This
has helped me in making knowledgebased
decisions as your 2nd V.P.
I have been in Clinical/Sports Massage
the last six years, working with Naturopathic,
Chiropractic and Medical Doctors.
In 2004 I co-founded the Advanced
Sports Therapy Institute.
I challenge you to Get Involved with
AMTA!
Leslie Giese, LMT #5975
3rd Vice President
I have been a Professional AMTA Member
for 8 years, as long as I have been a
Licensed Massage Therapist. I decided
from the beginning that I would be a
professional. I also knew that I wanted to
be a part of an organization that would
support me in being that. I was a cube
dweller for 21 years and once I decided
to change to massage, I knew I wanted to
help others like me, so I specialized in
on-site chair massage and stress management
training. I am a part owner and
director of on-site chair massage at The
Massage Clinic in Tigard.
One of my goals is to get the MERT
program set this year and also help get
more members energized about being
part of this organization. I look forward
to serving you this year.
Michael Dukart, LMT #6806
Secretary
I have been an LMT for over 6 years,
living and working in the Salem area.
I've been an AMTA member most of that
time. I practice primarily deep tissue
bodywork, table and chair, as well as
Fijian massage. I am beginning a second
2-year term as secretary of AMTA-OR.
The past two years it has been an honor
and a privilege to serve in that capacity.
The opportunities for growth and learning
have been tremendous. This year one
of my goals is to organize a more visible
and active National Massage Awareness
Week for Oregon in October. I anticipate
that this new board will do great things.
Brandi Walton, LMT #3218
Treasurer
I'm Brandi Walton from Wilsonville,
Oregon, member of AMTA for 15 years,
and Chapter Treasurer for several terms.
I work for a chiropractor in Lake
Oswego and do massage out of my
home. My goals for this year are to keep
the expenses down, train others to fill out
expense report forms, and be flexible
when necessary. It's an honor to serve
our organization and be a part of the
AMTA-OR massage community.
AMTA-OR Annual Meeting Highlights
The Brand
that Binds
with TJ Helm
No, I’m not talking about cattle branding.
Though, you wouldn’t be that far
off. Branding your business, product, or
service is not that different. A strong
brand allows people to associate your
product or service with your business.
Your brand is your promise to your clients
and the emotional bond you establish
with them. The stronger that emotional
bond is, the more loyal the customer.
And we all want more loyal customers.
How do you create that bond, how do
you establish your brand? Your brand is
not just one aspect of your company. It’s
(541) 937•2611
npassist@msn.com
Barb Tyler
lquemie
ublishing
nk
your company name, your logo, how
you’ve positioned yourself in the marketplace,
and the personality of you and
your company. It’s every piece of paper
that comes out of your office — it’s your
business card, your customer service
policies, it’s the whole package.
Take a look at Pepsi, Nike, Subway,
Nordstroms or any other company that
has a strong brand. When you hear the
phrase “just do it” you think of Nike and
when you think of customer service you
think of Nordstroms. That’s because
those companies have branded themselves
in such a way as to be known for
those characteristics.
You’re probably thinking, “That’s all
well and good for a large company with
a huge branding and marketing budget.
But how do I, a small business owner,
brand and market my business on a small
budget?” The important thing is not to
dwell on all the marketing dollars you
don’t have and think of all the avenues
you do have open to you. Whether you
have a large budget or not, the process is
the same.
That process starts with defining your
identity:
Name. A company’s name means
nothing until something is associated
with it.
Logo. What you look like, who you
are, what you do. What do you want
your clients to think of you.
Positioning. Ask your customers
and target market what they think of
you: lowest cost, largest inventory,
highest quality, quickest delivery,
best service, etc.
(See Branding… continued on page 5)
Branding…
(Continued from page 4)
Personality. If your company were
a person, how would you want it to
appear? Ask: are you friendly/
authoritative, fast/thorough, advanced/traditional,
etc.
Once you know what you and your company
stand for, it is time to put that identity
to work and market. Make sure that
everything associated with your company
reflects that identity: website, voice
mail message, letterhead, business card,
how you treat the customers, your 30
second commercial, how you appear at a
networking event, anyone working for
you, all of it, and I mean all of it needs
to reflect that identity.
It’s important not to deviate from that
identity. You don’t want your clients to
have to guess who you are. A brand that
is consistently and constantly put out
there will draw your clients closer. Just
as branding cattle is a somewhat irreversible
process, you want your clients
irreversibly stuck on you!
At the 2005 AMTA-OR Annual Meeting
I want to thank everyone that signed up
is also the morning that time springs
forward, so please remember to set your
clocks ahead Saturday night!
We will be having other classes soon.
The Massage Clinic is located at 7360
First Vice President Report
Provided by Tamara Felix, LMT #5352
My journey with AMTA-OR has come a
long way. As a newly-elected officer
four years ago, I had a dream that
AMTA-OR would grow by holding
monthly membership meetings with education
and cookies, and that attendance
would grow with each new meeting
around the state, and AMTA-OR would
grow to become a wonderful community
of support for all LMTs in Oregon—
where we could gather together and be
inspired by each other. Perhaps learn
something new, or just reinforce the
value and power for the work we do in
touching the lives of others.
This community of support would be
structured by monthly membership meetings,
beginning with education and treats
to entice attendance (thus the term
Cookie Masters). The monthly attendance
would grow with each new meeting,
and end the year with an Annual
Meeting that felt like a Convention at a
nice hotel with many attendees, a full
day or two of continuing education
classes and even a trade show of local
businesses who support and enhance the
practice of Massage Therapy in Oregon.
(See Chapter Reports… continued on page 6)

Rosalie Movius, MD, Michele Hoover,
PT and Susanne Carlson, MA, LMT
presented a workshop at the state meeting
on the pelvis, its function and dysfunction.
These three women are just a
part of the whole team available to patients
at the Massotherapy Clinic in
downtown Portland.
They included assessment of pelvic instability
and dysfunction. Dr. Movius
covered normal pelvic movements, SI
laxity and the pelvic asymmetry, which
follows. Co-morbidities that often accompany
the pain and movement dysfunction
of pelvic instability include
obesity, depression, osteoarthritis, inflammatory
conditions, sleep (or lack
thereof) and other injury patterns associated
with this condition.
Michele Hoover covered exercises for
quieting the muscles that are commonly
over recruited when the pelvis is dysfunctional.
These include superficial and
deep muscles of the back, legs and abdomen.
She also covered how medical professionals
can teach patients to help
themselves.
Sue Carlson covered the massage techniques
and Thompson maneuver. She
also handed out a pain rating scale that
should be commonly utilized when
working with patients in pain, regardless
of the etiology of pain. This is part of a
full assessment of a patient presenting
with pain and/or sacroiliac dysfunction.
This was intended as an introduction of a
topic much too broad to be covered in a
few hours. They plan to follow it with a
workshop later this year that will be a
deeper focus on the actual “hands on”
work. This eight-hour workshop will
provide the skills and knowledge to
safely and productively work with these
types of patients.
Dr. Movius, who did her medical training
at OHSU, brings to her medical practice
a vast depth of knowledge of the
human body, its movements, and how to
teach. Michele Hoover is a pediatric PT
trained in NDT which breaks movement
into very small units of movement associated
with the developmental stages of
maturation. This proves invaluable in her
work with injuries and re-education of
adults needing to take very small steps as
well. She uses Yoga to teach exercises
for strengthening and lengthening muscles
in rehabilitation. Sue Carlson has
been doing and teaching massage in Oregon
for thirty years. Her background in
exercise physiology, anatomy and physiology
is utilized every day in her work.
AMTA-OR is grateful to have such a
past president and board member of
AMTA at the national level, has a long
history of contributing her knowledge
This year’s Trade Show featured the
products and services of 18 exhibitors,
who were visited by attendees in between
workshops, lunch and the annual
meeting. At 5 pm, AMTA-OR’s annual
raffle was held, with many great items
won by those in attendance. “I believe
just about everyone attending had a great
time,” said President Nordstrom of the
(Continued from page 5)
As my second term as First Vice President
comes to an end, I am delighted to
find that my dream for AMTA-OR has
been realized. I am grateful for the experience
of being a part of our chapter’s
growth, and thankful for all of you who
helped make AMTA-OR grow into the
community of support it has become.
Now, with new leadership, it is time for
new dreams to grow into an even
stronger community of support. I invite
all members to be a part of creating
AMTA-OR’s potential. I look forward to
seeing you at the Volunteer Luncheon
