The birth of my daughter, the selling of my business, development of new skills, and the operations of the AMTA-Oregon chapter has kept me busy. I have seen much growth in other people as well. Our members are doing many great things in our communities. I am motivated by their dreams, desires and goals. The AMTA-OR board has put into action a plan to make this member-driven organization focused on its members: phone calls, activities, available education, our annual meetings, and newsletters with surveys to find out what you think are a few of the efforts put forward this past year. I feel like this board has gone out of its way to make sure you are represented in all our decisions. With the end of another year, we are changing and growing once again. We are hosting a Volunteer Luncheon on Saturday April 9, at the Sweetbrier Inn & Suites in Tualatin, just off I-5 in the Portland area. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a pre-luncheon AMTA-OR board meeting, followed by a noon luncheon open free of charge to all AMTA members and massage therapy students. Meetings will be held after the luncheon, ending at 5 p.m. This will be an opportunity to build your resume, serve your fellow massage therapists, and enjoy activities that could build your massage practice. I truly appreciate all the assistance that members have given during past years, and I hope to continue seeing you at AMTA-0R functions. Additionally, I would love to see new faces that have a renewed energy and excitement for service and massage therapy. Please join us on April 9. Contact any board member for more information. Nathan Nordstrom, LMT #7700 President Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself as your AMTA-OR Chapter President. I have been at this post for one year now, previously serving AMTA-OR as third vice president. During this time, I have found out many interesting things about people I would call the “movers and shakers” of this industry. My ability to lead depends on my ability to lead these knowledgeable people. I have also found out a lot about our state and the inner workings of professional associations, governing bodies (OBMT), education, and Roberts Rules. By attending AMTA’s Community Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) and its National Convention, I have communicated with many professionals from other states who are in completely different situations with their governing bodies. By serving a committee for the NCBTMB I found myself serving our community in a completely different way. I have been an examiner for the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists, and am currently teaching massage at Ashmead College in Tigard. My practice has varied from resort spas, clinics, outcall, owning my own spa, and currently I am practicing out of a chiropractic office. I believe that service is the beginning of a fulfilling career. There’s no better way to do that than to join with us here at AMTA-OR. Mike Blackmore, LMT #6637 1st Vice President I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist from 1998 to present. I graduated from the University of Oregon with M.S. in Athletic Training (1987). I am currently co-owner of a full service hair salon in Eugene, offering sports massage, therapeutic massage, and insurance billing. I serve as chairman of the Exam Committee for the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists. I have been a member of AMTA since my licensure. I believe that growth and success comes through participation in your industry. Contributing to the visibility and growth AMTA Oregon News – 3 Meet Your New Board AMTA-OR Board of Directors 2005 of therapeutic massage as a viable form of therapy for health and wellness will only contribute to one’s own growth. AMTA is the best opportunity for me to contribute and grow. John Combe, LMT #7492, CCA 2nd Vice President/ Delegate I would like to introduce myself as your AMTA-OR 2nd Vice President. This is year number two of a two-year term for my position. In the first year I was excited to learn all of the information about AMTA, to better serve you, the members. Attending AMTA’s Community Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) and the National Convention, and taking many leadership classes at both, has helped a great deal. Being the Membership Chair prior to my 2nd V.P. election, members have been my focus from the start, and will continue to be. Serving as a Chapter Delegate the next two years I will always "Remember the Members". I have been a Professional Member the last six years, in which a lot has changed in the profession at both State and National levels. I am also involved with the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists, serving on the Education and Exam committees and helping with the exam process. This has helped me in making knowledgebased decisions as your 2nd V.P. I have been in Clinical/Sports Massage the last six years, working with Naturopathic, Chiropractic and Medical Doctors. In 2004 I co-founded the Advanced Sports Therapy Institute. I challenge you to Get Involved with AMTA! Leslie Giese, LMT #5975 3rd Vice President I have been a Professional AMTA Member for 8 years, as long as I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist. I decided from the beginning that I would be a professional. I also knew that I wanted to be a part of an organization that would support me in being that. I was a cube dweller for 21 years and once I decided to change to massage, I knew I wanted to help others like me, so I specialized in on-site chair massage and stress management training. I am a part owner and director of on-site chair massage at The Massage Clinic in Tigard. One of my goals is to get the MERT program set this year and also help get more members energized about being part of this organization. I look forward to serving you this year. Michael Dukart, LMT #6806 Secretary I have been an LMT for over 6 years, living and working in the Salem area. I've been an AMTA member most of that time. I practice primarily deep tissue bodywork, table and chair, as well as Fijian massage. I am beginning a second 2-year term as secretary of AMTA-OR. The past two years it has been an honor and a privilege to serve in that capacity. The opportunities for growth and learning have been tremendous. This year one of my goals is to organize a more visible and active National Massage Awareness Week for Oregon in October. I anticipate that this new board will do great things. Brandi Walton, LMT #3218 Treasurer I'm Brandi Walton from Wilsonville, Oregon, member of AMTA for 15 years, and Chapter Treasurer for several terms. I work for a chiropractor in Lake Oswego and do massage out of my home. My goals for this year are to keep the expenses down, train others to fill out expense report forms, and be flexible when necessary.
