Rosalie Movius, MD, Michele Hoover, PT and Susanne Carlson, MA, LMT presented a workshop at the state meeting on the pelvis, its function and dysfunction. These three women are just a part of the whole team available to patients at the Massotherapy Clinic in downtown Portland. They included assessment of pelvic instability and dysfunction. Dr. Movius covered normal pelvic movements, SI laxity and the pelvic asymmetry, which follows. Co-morbidities that often accompany the pain and movement dysfunction of pelvic instability include obesity, depression, osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, sleep (or lack thereof) and other injury patterns associated with this condition. Michele Hoover covered exercises for quieting the muscles that are commonly over recruited when the pelvis is dysfunctional. These include superficial and deep muscles of the back, legs and abdomen. She also covered how medical professionals can teach patients to help themselves. Sue Carlson covered the massage techniques and Thompson maneuver. She also handed out a pain rating scale that should be commonly utilized when working with patients in pain, regardless of the etiology of pain. This is part of a full assessment of a patient presenting with pain and/or sacroiliac dysfunction. This was intended as an introduction of a topic much too broad to be covered in a few hours. They plan to follow it with a workshop later this year that will be a deeper focus on the actual “hands on” work. This eight-hour workshop will provide the skills and knowledge to safely and productively work with these types of patients. Dr. Movius, who did her medical training at OHSU, brings to her medical practice a vast depth of knowledge of the human body, its movements, and how to teach. This proves invaluable in her work with injuries and re-education of adults needing to take very small steps as well. She uses Yoga to teach exercises for strengthening and lengthening muscles in rehabilitation. Sue Carlson has been doing and teaching massage in Oregon for thirty years. Her background in exercise physiology, anatomy and physiology is utilized every day in her work. AMTA-OR is grateful to have such a talented group of speakers to share their medical knowledge and experience. May 17 — Acupuncture and Pain: What is the Point? An experiential opportunity if you choose. June 21 — Interventional Medicine — Pumps, Electrical Stim, etc. All meetings will take place at the Multnomah Athletic Club from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Cost is $25, which includes dinner and 1.5 hours of continuing education credit.
