ESASO | A vision of collaboration | Page 5 Fellowships: General Principles ESASO has created an academic curriculum consisting of taught specialisation modules, leading to the degree of Master of Science in Ophthalmology (MSO), and runs a Fellowship scheme for eye specialists. The ESASO Fellowship is an advanced specialist training programme in which the recipient can acquire a thorough, in-depth understanding of the specific subject and, accordingly, proficiency in the exercise of the clinical-surgical profession. Aims The Fellow’s advanced training shall be conducted within one of the high specialist teaching hospitals or university centres that have entered a partnership agreement with ESASO and agreed on a training programme on an ophthal- mological specialist branch. The Fellow achieves proficiency in the execution techniques for all diagnostic procedures covered by the Fellowship; is being involved in all clinical/treatment decisions; and has mastered a good theoretical knowledge of operating techniques. In addition, the Fellow has commenced his/her research project under a Tutor’s supervision. (Months 1 – 4) The Fellow further fine-tunes his/her skills for the execution of all diagnostic procedures; achieves a competent autonomy in handling the clinical and therapeutic aspects of a patient’s care; and begins executing surgery procedures under a Tutor’s supervision. The Fellow carries on with his research work according to the plan laid out at the start of the Fellowship. (Months 5 – 8) Eligibility Priority is given to those who earned top marks calculated on the basis of the overall grades obtained in the examinations of each taught module and of the ESASO evaluation. Objectives of the Fellowship Programme ESASO plans its Fellowship curricula in accordance with its accredited Departments of Ophthalmology, to ensure that the above mentioned targets are reached. It is expected that Fellows will reach a level of competence enabling them to practise autonomously in the ultra-advanced sector of their expertise. Duration and Organisation The one year of Fellowship programme is subdivided into three consecutive stages corresponding to levels of skills to be gradually attained and certified term by term. 1. 2. 3. The Fellow achieves a thorough knowledge and mastery of the technical skills and of the diagnostic and clinical routines; acquires a sound proficiency in surgery procedures as confirmed by the number of operations carried out; and completes his/her research programme. (Months 9 – 12)
