Meet B.C.’s mining associations HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY MAKE FOR DIVERSE INTERESTS – AND VOICES TO REPRESENT THEM BY PETER CAULFIELD British Columbia has a well-developed mineral exploration and mining industry, with hundreds of companies involved in exploration and mining, and hundreds more providing products and services. Because mineral exploration and mining are entrenched in B.C.’s economy, it’s not surprising there are many industry associations that represent the industry to government, the public and other companies in the private sector. These associations cover every stage of the mining process in B.C. A partial list includes preliminary geoscience (Geoscience BC), exploration and early-stage development (AME BC and many regional groups throughout the province), late-stage development and construction (the Mining Suppliers Association of B.C. and the Mining Association of B.C.), operation (the Mining Association of B.C.), professional regulation (the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia) and reclamation (the B.C. Technical Research Committee on Reclamation). Byng Giraud, vice-president of corporate affairs for Vancouver-based Imperial Metals Corp., knows a thing or three about B.C. mining associations, having worked for two of the main organizations in the province – the Mining Association of B.C. and AME BC – and through them interacted with most of the other mineral exploration and mining associations in B.C. Although the difference between MABC and AME BC is self-evident in the industry, Giraud says many people outside mining, including some in the provincial government, are uncertain about the respective roles.
