The 1898 chamber In 1898 a Chamber of Mines was founded in Vancouver. We wrote about this group in our fall issue, and were puzzled by its disappearance without a trace. But, thanks to newspaper reports of the time, we do know its aims: a) to promote and protect the mining interests and industries of British Columbia, b) to consider questions connected with the mining industry and promote public discussion thereon, c) to promote measures affecting the mining industry, d) to collect and circulate statistics and other information relating to the mining industry and e) to communicate with and exchange information on mining matters with Chambers of Mines and government departments of mines in the Dominion of Canada and other countries … and so on. When the British Columbia Chamber of Mines, predecessor to AME BC, began in earnest in 1912 (originally as the Vancouver Mining Club), its aims were virtually identical. And they have changed little in 98 years. ■ This is a first draft of the first chapter of a book by local author Chuck Davis, marking the 100th anniversary of AME BC in 2012. Additional excerpts will appear in future issues of Mineral Exploration. The book is aimed at the layman, so those of you in the industry will find a great deal with which you are familiar.
