TROUBLESHOOTING The majority of operating problems that occur with a system can be traced to improper adjustments or delayed service. A consistently applied preventative maintenance program, as outlined in the Maintenance section of this manual, will prevent many problems. The following chart is designed to help you locate a problem by suggesting probable causes and the recommended solutions. SYMPTOMS Starting motor does not crank PROBABLE CAUSES Steering control levers not in park brake position or switch not adjusted Deck clutch switch engaged Weak or dead battery Electrical connections are corroded or loose SUGGESTED REMEDIES Place steering control levers in park brake position or re-adjust switch Disengage clutch switch Recharge or replace Check the electrical connections 15 amp fuse is blown Replace the 15 amp fuse For additional causes See engine manual SYMPTOMS Mower creeps when steering control levers are in neutral Mower circles or veers in one direction Mower creeps when parking brake engaged PROBABLE CAUSES Steering linkage needs adjustment Steering linkage needs adjustment Loose steering linkage Adjust linkage Adjust linkage Tighten linkage Tires improperly inflated Adjust air pressure to 8 - 12 psi (55 - 83 KPa) Transaxle component faulty Steering linkage out of adjustment SUGGESTED REMEDIES Contact your Dealer Adjust steering linkage The engine will not start, starts hard or fails to keep running No fuel or line plugged Fuel valve is turned off There is incorrect fuel in the fuel system There is dirt in the fuel filter Fill tank or replace line (See Fuel System section for more details) Open the fuel valve Drain the tank and replace the fuel with the proper type Replace the fuel filter There is abnormal vibration Brakes need adjustment The engine mounting bolts are loose The engine pulley, idler pulley or blade pulley is loose The engine pulley is damaged Adjust parking brakes Tighten the engine mounting bolts Tighten the appropriate pulley Contact your Dealer Dirt, water or stale fuel in the fuel system Contact your Dealer The cutting blade(s) is/are bent or unbalanced Install new cutting blade(s) The choke is not on Move the choke lever to ON A blade mounting bolt is loose Tighten the blade mounting bolt Numerous See engine manual Spindle bearing is worn or loose Replace or tighten spindle bearing Engine: Runs with continuous misfiring or engine runs unevenly or erratically Loss of power or system will not operate in either direction Numerous Restrictions in air cleaner Poor compression See engine manual Service air cleaner Contact your Dealer Blades do not rotate A blade spindle is bent The deck drive belt is worn, loose or broken The deck drive belt is off the pulley Contact your Dealer Install a new deck drive belt Install the deck drive belt and check for a reason Air cooled engine overheating Steering linkage needs adjustment Tow valve open The traction drive belt is worn, loose or broken Air in system For additional causes Air intake screen or cleaning fins clogged For additional causes Low engine oil pressure Low oil level Add oil Adjust linkage Close tow valve Install a new traction drive belt Check filter and fittings See engine manual Clean screen and fin See engine manual Electric clutch is not engaging Check and/or replace 10 amp fuse.
