I’D LIKE to show you the unspoilt national rivers in eastern 

Swedish Lapland: the rivers Kalix and Torne. I would show you 

my best fishing spots (I promise!), the shallow bathing creeks and 

barbecue areas with views over the smooth water and blue-grey 

forest-clad mountains. The whole of eastern Swedish Lapland 

is full of water, with the wild rivers, the sea and the large lakes 

shining like a guiding thread through the story of the region. Yes, 

here the biggest attractions are created by nature itself. And in 

summer, when the midnight sun generously pours its light down 

24 hours a day, you get a lot of extra time and energy to fill the 

days with memorable activities. A rich culture with living minority 

languages – Finnish, Meänkali and Sami – alongside Swedish. 

The five main towns: Kalix, Haparanda, Övertorneå, 

Överkalix and Pajala, are within comfortable distance of each 

other. This means that you don’t need to choose – you will be 

able to explore the entire region while you are here on holiday. 

Follow the Torne river along the border with Finland (yes, there’s 

another country just the other side of the river!) and be fascinated 

by the exciting history and culture of the area, so intimately 

interwoven with that of our good neighbours to the east. Today, 

the boundary is one of the most peaceful in the world. This has 

not always been the case, and there are many stories to discover 

of Tornedal’s dramatic history. 

Take a trip over the mountain to Överkalix in the next 

river valley. Listen in and try to understand the rich Överkalixbondskan, 

a unique dialect and an important part of the local 

identity. And of course you mustn’t miss the coast, with its shallow 

bathing waters and fantastic archipelago. Take a boat trip out 

among the islands or take the car to beautiful Seskarö island. 

And don’t forget to taste the local delicacies as you 

go; smoked or seared freshly caught fish, freshly baked mjukkaka 

or rieska flatbreads served with melting butter, Kalix Löjrom roe 

with its Protected Designation of Origin status, ”dopp i kopp” 

potatoes, game and berries. Ingredients straight from nature, and 

completely without additives. And as the icing on the cake, did 

you know that the region is amongst the sunniest in Sweden, with 

impressive numbers of sunshine hours every summer, and quite 

often the hottest temperatures in the country?

KALIX - WHERE RIVER AND 

SEA MEET 

Kalix is beautifully situated where the impressive and 

pristine Kalix River flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. The 

waters around Kalix are hiding fabulous riches. There 

are a lot of wild salmon and you’ve probably heard of, 

perhaps even eaten the gold of the sea – Kalix bleak 

roe (Kalixlöjrom). Kalix bleak roe is unique and is 

therefore origin protected under the European Union 

standard. The proximity to the East has characterized 

Kalix and the old wars against Russia have left their 

mark. In the area there are graves of Russian soldiers 

who perished on Swedish soil. And according to 

legend, there should be spoils of Russian gold buried 

in the woods north of Pålänge. Today it still attracts 

people into the forest to dig for gold. In Kalix, you 

don’t need not choose between coastal or river – 

here you’ll find both of them. Let yourself be surprised 

by the adventure and tranquility in an environment 

where the guests are always at the center. 

PAJALA - WHERE CULTURE 

FLOURISHES 

Pajala is molded by a century-long clash and melting 

pot between Finnish, Swedish and Sámi traditions. 

The Torne River Valley heritage and identity is deeply 

rooted in these three cultures, so far as becoming the 

home of a minority language of its own – Meänkieli. 

Not to mention the food! The local food traditions, 

dating back hundreds of years, offer many joyful 

surprises. Such as Kaffeost, cheese you eat with or in 

your coffee, and more. Summer in Pajala is something 

special – fishing, canoeing or rafting trips on any 

of the five pristine rivers, the cloudberries on the 

wetlands, elk hunting and berry picking. Enjoy our 

nature, culture and see our handicrafts traditions.

ÖVERTORNEÅ - THE HEART OF 

THE BORDER COUNTRY 

With good neighbors such as Finland and the Arctic 

Circle, Övertorneå has something to say about 

friendship – and making the most of borders. All 

friendships begin in the sauna, as we all know, and 

here’s plenty of it to go around. Try a traditional 

sauna, smoke sauna and why not a sauna raft along 

the Torne River? History, the nearness to Finland and 

the pure nature gives Övertorneå a special kind of 

character. 

ÖVERKALIX - WHERE PAST AND 

PRESENT COME TOGETHER 

This charming little town, nestled in the woodlands 

by the Arctic Circle, has many stories to 

tell. Fishing stories, that is. Some of Sweden’s 

best fishing spots are to be found here along with 

beautiful scenery, mighty waterfalls, rapids, and 

a very charming city center. Bring your fishing 

rod – and camera, here’s a lot to catch your eye. 

HAPARANDATORNIO - OUR 

BORDERLESS TWIN TOWN 

The border towns of Haparanda in Sweden and 

Torne in Finland have today grown into one single 

unit – HaparandaTorne. Visiting this area means 

twice the range of goods, culture, entertainment, 

education, and more. Since IKEA and several other 

large chain stores have chosen to establish here, 

HaparandaTorne has evolved into a vibrant commercial 

center, visited by millions of people annually. Other 

small shops as Butiken på Landet, Taavolagården, 

Udda med Flit and Pesula Gårdsbutik are well worth 

a visit. There is also a Swedish-Finnish border culture, 

developed through centuries with sauna, fishing 

traditions, smuggling and multilingualism. This border 

region has also been witness of wars and many 

other dramatic events through the years. Traces of 

history can still be seen, like the Orthodox Church, 

trading houses, museums and a manifold of monuments. 

The border itself has a special magic. As with 

the Swedish and Finnish time zones: on the local golf 

course, you can hit a ball over the border – and it will 

land an hour earlier because of the time difference. 

There are also great opportunities for recreation 

outside the city centers. You can find peace and tranquility 

in the beautiful Torne Valley, full of traditional 

culture, or enjoy nature in the unique Archipelago.

Swedish Lapland’s culinary pearls. Places where you 

can enjoy meals prepared from local ingredients or 

buy local products to take home.

Here local produce is 

completely natural 

SOCIAL INTERACTION and a sense of well-being go 

hand in hand with a really excellent meal in eastern 

Swedish Lapland. It has always been that way. The 

local cuisine has the benefit of being able to browse 

in a well-stocked pantry, brimming over with natural 

ingredients of the highest quality. In the dense forests 

we obtain game meat from freely grazing elk and reindeer. 

There is also a large supply of wild fowl here, including 

ptarmigan and capercaillie. The flavours marry 

extremely well with berries that have been allowed to 

ripen under the copious midnight sun. Or why not let 

lingonber-ries, bilberries, Arctic raspberries or cloudberries 

serve as the sweet finish for a perfect meal? 

Of course, you can’t miss out on the fish. In Torne 

River and Kalix River, the clear, free-flow-ing national 

rivers, salmon, grayling and whitefish swim. And bleak 

caught in the sea yield the exclusive, gold-shimmering 

Kalix vendace roe. Enjoy it with the classic accompaniments 

– look for it on restau-rant menus in the area. 

Kalix vendace roe also is sold at the tourist office in 

Kalix for those who want to buy the delicacy to take 

home and share with loved ones. 

Here in eastern Swedish Lapland, local produce is something 

of a legacy from the past, when many of the 

large farms in the fertile river valleys were self-sufficient. 

At Hulkoffgården and in Kukkolaforsen, both 

of which are mentioned in the White Guide, you can 

order local delicacies from forest, river and field, 

prepared in the tra-ditional manner, seasoned with 

modern influences. 

That fact that we find ourselves in a borderland also 

is reflected in our food preparation. People talk 

about a bread boundary between the rivers Kalix 

älv and Torne älv. Explore the difference in taste 

between Tornedalen’s rieska cornbread and Kalix 

Älvdal’s klådda, which is made of wheat. The squeak 

between your teeth when you chew coffee cheese 

(kaffeost) is something you have to sample. Coffee 

cheese is made from raw milk and rennet that is cooked, 

allowed to cool and then baked in an oven. It is 

usually enjoyed in coffee (yes, it’s true!), and it squeaks 

so pleasantly between the teeth when you chew 

it. If you eat coffee cheese along-side coffee, it often 

is served with a little cloudberry jam as a condiment.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MIKAEL NIEMI AND 

LÆSTADIUS 

Come along on thrilling guided tours in the footsteps of literature and history. At Pajala 

Turism & Evenemang, you can book your knowledge tour, and along with knowledgeable 

and inspiring guides, be escorted to Kengis, Jupukka, Læstadiuspörtet, central 

Pajala and Vittula, where you can become familiar with the boundary culture between 

Finland and Sweden at close quarters. Experience the settings from Mikael Niemi’s 

book “Popular Music from Vittula: A Novel”, which also was made into a Swedish film. 


HANHIVITTIKKO FÄBOD 

Small, red painted cottages surrounded by summer meadows shine like 

jewels in forest clearings. Accordion music, craft events and other fun activities 

for the whole family are organised here. Mountain pasture farmers, 

mountain cows, sheep and hens contribute to the experience. You can 

hire traditional mountain pasture cottages. 

JOCKFALL 

Here you can also watch as the salmon leap up the fish ladders and anglers stand 

along the banks of the Kalix river in the hope of making a prize catch. Guide and fly 

fishing instructor Ronny Ladin will happily help you to improve your technique. And if 

you start to feel peckish, visit the restaurant and try out a ”jockfallare” – a burger made 

with salmon and potato.

HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF TORNE RIVER VALLEY 

The core collection exhibition at the Historical Museum of Torne River Valley in Tornedalen is titled “Encounter 

at the Boundary – our common river valley”. It tells about the roots of the people who live in the valley: why they 

came to the area and how they coped with life. In the exhibition you can see what archaeologists have uncovered 

about life thousands and hundreds of years ago, familiarise yourself with traditional livelihoods and hear how war 

has affected residents of the river valley. The history and stories are made accessible through artefacts, images, 

sound and films. The proximity of the boundary and its influence are at the fore of the exhibition in many different 

ways. The exhibition also addresses typical phenomena in the area that still are evi-dent in daily life: cuisine, 

rock music, local identity, language and dialects. 

CHURCHES 

In eastern Swedish Lapland there are 20 churches, all with their 

own special architecture and history. Here you can find mediaeval 

churches interspersed with Orthodox churches, all forming part of 

a unique cultural and historical tradition. In the summer, many of the 

churches offer guided tours. Tick off your own list of churches.

ARCTIC MOOSE FARM 

A visit to the Arctic Moose farm to meet Rokka and his moose will give 

you unforgettable memories. You will have the chance to see and pat 

the tame moose, and hear the story of how everything began with a 

moose called Arthur. You can book guided moose tours in advance. 

The farm is located around 20 km north of Överkalix on the E10.

Summer is a time for play and relaxation. Here in eastern Swedish Lapland, 

you will find plenty of time for both with your family.

A family holiday can be 

both tough, stressful, irritating and 

utterly, utterly.... wonderful. 

Travelling with your family is both the best and worst 

thing you can do. Are you like me, with a romantic 

vision of how it will be; happy children eating ice cream 

or playing together in the water? 

And then of course, it isn’t like that. The children 

are screaming and the book that you were longing 

to read is still unopened in the bag which is full of 

sticky juice mixed with the lovely white sand that 

was described in the brochures. After yet another 

summer with too many people on the beaches and 

long queues for the ice cream kiosk, I decided to try 

eastern Swedish Lapland instead. Sun, swimming and 

relaxation... of course there was sticky juice in the bag 

anyway, but I must say that it’s a perfect place to take 

a holiday. With comfortable distances by car, we saw 

all five municipalities in eastern Swedish Lapland, and 

also played car bingo as we travelled, which meant 

that we looked at the wonderful countryside and also 

passed the time more quickly in the car.

The Vasikkavuoma nature reserve is one 

of Northern Europe’s largest hay-making 

moors. The area covers 250 hectares and 

in its heyday there were 350 barns here. 

Now only 70 barns remain. At Camp 

Vasikkavuoma, there are 18 beds in five 

rooms. The kitchen area contains a gas 

cooker and refrigerator. Wood for heating 

the cottage and sauna.

RAJAMAA 

200 km north of the Arctic Circle, at the Finnish 

border, is Rajamaa; an idyllic campsite with a homely 

feeling and welcoming hosts. In the summer, we 

offer many opportunities for excellent fishing, both 

fly and spinning. Here there are also many good 

pike lakes. 

CAMP ONKA 

You will be staying only 25 metres from the famous 

Onka pool on the Lainio river. The Onka pool is 

reserved for the use of campsite residents, and there 

is also a total of 9.5 km of river to fish on, from both 

banks. The campsite is inspired by African safari 

camps, with lots of comfort and luxury but without 

leaving a major impact on the environment. 


Archipelagos 

Kalix and Haparanda archipelagos together have around 440 kilometres of coast, plus 1400 islands, so you 

will find very good opportunities for high-quality fishing either with family or friends. Many people choose to 

take a boat and fish from the water, which gives an even greater feeling of freedom. You can find your own 

island to fish from, and if the fish aren’t biting you can always just relax and take in the beautiful archipelago 

scenery. You can also try out trolling, which is often very effective in this kind of water. 

If you don’t have access to a boat, of course you can also fish from the coast; fishing for pike in the early 

summer can be very effective, and every year several pike more than 100 cm in length are caught. Another 

exciting fishing method is dry fly fishing for grayling in the archipelago. In the autumn there are good chances 

of catching both whitefish and sea trout.

Lakes 

In the heart of Lapland, everyone can find their own favourite lake or pond, because there are 1600 to choose 

from! Some are home to enormous pike that are so big they can be mistaken for logs, so that dream pike is 

definitely out there somewhere. Fishing for perch is one of the high points of the summer; the fish are often 

at their best when there’s a real high pressure over the area, with lots of sun and warmth. This is a fish that 

appeals to everyone in the family, and you can fish from either jetties or boats. 

For the real angling enthusiast, there are lakes that can deliver Swedish records for roach; there are several 

confirmed large catches that have never been registered in the big fish register. You will also find Sweden’s 

northernmost zander here. Zander can be a cautious fish that sometimes take so cautiously that you hardly 

feel anything on the line. But if you go out on warm summer nights you may have an exciting fishing experience. 

If you would rather go for grayling or trout with a dry fly, there are plenty of very fine lakes, and often these 

are the kind of food-rich waters that give both grayling and trout everything they need to grow really big. Is 

there anything more exciting than to see your dry fly disappear into the mouth of a big trout?

Rivers 

Within the Heart of Lapland, we have five large rivers 

and their tributaries; the Torne, Lainio, Muonio, 

Tärendö and Kalix rivers. These rivers run through 

an attractive forested landscape from their sources 

far up into the mountains and down to the coast. For 

hundreds of years, the rivers have been a natural 

resource for the local population. 

Angling is a relatively new arrival which has become 

extremely popular in recent years, particularly as a 

result of the extremely good salmon runs we have 

had. The reason why salmon fishing has improved 

is that there have been very tough restrictions at 

sea, where the salmon previously found it difficult 

to escape the fishing fleets. But for four years, certain 

of the rivers have seen an all-time high in terms 

of the number of spawning salmon. For example, in 

the Torne river, it rose by 104,000 individual salmon 

in summer 2014, which is significantly more than the 

majority of other Nordic salmon rivers. The average 

weight of the salmon is high in our rivers; around 7 kg. 

In total, we have 1850 km of salmon river, and even 

though the majority of the rivers are large you can 

still use normal angling methods such as spinning 

and fly fishing. 

And salmon aren’t the only fish; there are also pike, 

perch, whitefish, grayling and trout. The long calm 

stretches of river can offer magical whitefish, pike 

and perch fishing. If you want to fish for grayling or 

trout, you have the best chance in the areas with rapids, 

or in the smaller tributaries that supply some of 

these rivers.

Mountain pasture farmers, mountain cows, sheep 

and hens contribute to the experience. You can hire 

traditional mountain pasture cottages. Guided tours 

can be prebooked for groups. 


Go wilderness camping by the extensive marshes 

of Vasikkavuoma. From the observation tower 

you have an excellent view, and the barbecue 

area below offers you a good place for a break. 

Your stay here is characterised by simplicity and 

harmony. Draw up water from the well, light the 

wood-fired sauna then simply relax and enjoy the 

feeling of just being.

KUKKOLA 

We offer different types of accommodation in a 

variety of price ranges and everything from hotel 

standard to self-catering. We have more than 100 

beds and when you stay with us you always have 

access to the sauna. The accommodation is divided 

into holiday apartments, cottages and camping 

cabins. 

Three cottages for hire with unspoilt nature only 

a stone’s throw away. Located on the large lake 

Miekojärvi, close to Överkalix. A perfect summer 

residence for the whole family, with opportunities 

for fishing, canoeing and hiking. 

Unevenly 

SIKNÄS FORTET 

Spend a night 40 metres underground in the 

top-secret underground fort at Hörmyrberget on 

the Siknäs peninsula. Experience what it was like 

to live in the fort and combine your visit with an 

overnight stay. 

CAMP ONKA 

You will be staying only 25 metres from the famous 

Onka pool on the Lainio river. The Onka pool is reserved 

for the use of campsite residents, and there 

is also a total of 9.5 km of river to fish on, from both 

banks. The campsite is inspired by African safari 

camps, with lots of comfort and luxury but without 

leaving a major impact on the environment.

Welcome to Sweden’s northernmost destination! 

In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up 

by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling 

northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days 

without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest 

brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. 

In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures 

around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte 

River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer.

is known. Heart of Lapland is owned by its members and is part of Swedish Lapland 

Visitors Board, the regional industry-governed platform for collaboration on the tourism 

industry in northernmost Sweden.
