Be enchanted by eastern
Swedish Lapland
w e lcom e to east e r n sw e d i s h lapland. Enjoy the hospitality.
It is said that each place has its own charm, and no one would
disagree when we say that eastern Swedish Lapland is a very
charming place indeed, with plenty of small picturesque islands
in the archipelago with magnificent scenery as well as a fascinating
history. Locals inviting guests for a dance on a balmy summer
evening and children playing outdoors making friends for
life, are not rare sights. That truly is holiday at its best - uncomplicated,
peaceful and absolutely wonderful.
The main attraction in this area is in fact nature itself. In the
summertime you’ll experience the famous Midnight Sun. The
sun won’t stop shining and darkness is banished. It may mess up
your sleeping pattern, spending nights in daylight, but believe
us when we say - you don’t want to miss out on this experience!
Why not make the most of it by heading to the river for some
midnight fishing?
This is a place of rich culture and vibrant minority languages:
Finnish, Meänkieli and Sami are all spoken alongside Swedish.
The five main destinations in the region are: Kalix, Haparanda,
Övertorneå, Pajala and Överkalix, all located at a convenient distance
from each other. In other words - you have time to explore
the whole region while you’re here.
Read Swedish actor Rafael Edholm’s story of how he fell in
love with Överkalix. How come an actor who’s travelled all over
the world prefers eastern Swedish Lapland above all other places
he’s visited? Let the locals’ warm hearts remind us that everybody
matters - we’re all important and equal.
Let the culinary flavours guide you between the different
destinations. You’ll find traditional dishes on the menu such
as reindeer, moose, grouse and capercaillie served with freshly
picked berries. The local cuisine is diverse with natural ingredients
of highest quality, straight from the forest. Local produced
at its finest... Why not let cranberries, blueberries, cloudberries
or perhaps arctic raspberries wrap up the perfect meal? You
can’t leave Kalix without having tried Kalix bleak roe (Kalix löjrom),
an exclusive local delicacy that simply can’t be missed!
Good tips
and ideas!
You’ll find contact details for local
entrepreneurs in the index
at the back. Page 23-27.
Welcome to eastern Swedish Lapland. Make yourself at home.
Pajala
Are you dreaming of warm summer nights with the midnight sun, and fishing waters like nowhere
else? Welcome to Pajala, every angler’s paradise. There are plenty of places to visit when you
are here, and even more fishing waters. The area is dominated by Muonio River, and it is mainly
known for its trout fishing. There are also brown trout, and lakes with trout and grayling. There
are also opportunities for salmon fishing. Here we fish around the clock during the peak summer
season, as the sun never sets. Visit the Tärendö River, which is the world’s second largest bifurcation.
Forest Hotel offer their guests a unique location with forest on one side and the river on the
other side. There are many beautiful places to visit in and around Pajala, so do not forget your
camera! The nature is great and the wildlife as well. The locals will charm you when you meet
them during your adventure, and you will experience the Swedish summer at its best.
Övertorneå
Have you ever jumped across the Arctic Circle? You have to give that a try when you’re
here, what a feeling! Övertorneå lives up during the summer and attracts visitors with its
traditional culture and charm. Just about 10 kilometers south of Övertorneå you will find
Luppioberget which makes the perfect daytrip for the whole family with its magnificent
surroundings and views. It is like God himself would have built a stone fort of Luppioberget.
And if you happen to be here on Midsummer Eve, the Luppio giant who is said to
live inside the mountain, may show himself to greet the first rays of sunshine. There are
many myths and legends linked to this place. Nowadays there is a restaurant up on the
mountain, and do we need to mention the view is spectacular? Bring the whole family
to Luppioberget for an adventurous outing - and do not forget your camera. The
children’s favorite is of course the lovely Ekobadet with heated outdoor pool, water
slides and children’s pool - the bath is located in the center of Övertorneå. We also
recommend you to visit Övertorneå church, where you can see the oldest organ
in Sweden. Take the opportunity to learn more about the culture here in Torne
River Valley, and enjoy the summer in Övertorneå!
HaparandaTornio
HaparandaTornio is booming in the summer, and Kukkola-forsen
live up like never before. Try the ancient fishing tradition which
involves a net with a long shaft, or join a guided tour in the
fishing museum and sauna museum. To see what everyday
life is like in HaparandaTornio, you have to try living
there just as the locals do – with one foot in each country,
Sweden and Finland. Eavesdrop, and maybe you can
perceive the difference between Finnish and the minority
language known as Meänkieli? Did you know that
Haparanda Church has gained a reputation for being
Sweden’s ugliest? Perhaps it is precisely because of this
controversial structure this church has become one
of Haparanda’s major attractions! The food culture
is characterized by locally produced meat and fish,
natural ingredients of the highest quality. Many restaurants
to choose from, but you should definitely visit
Hulkoffgården for a nice dinner in a beautiful setting.
Or leave the mainland for a day and head out to the
Bay of Bothnia pearl, Seskarö, located in Haparanda
archipelago. Visit the White Guide listed restaurant
Seskarö Wärdshus and experience their food which is
well-known all along the coast. Welcome to Haparanda-
Tornio, everything you need for an idyllic summer holiday
in the north.
4 DESTINATIONS OF SWEDISH LAPLAND KALIX PAJALA ÖVERKALIX ÖVERTORNEÅ HAPARANDATORNIO 5
I’ v e e x p e r i e nc e d s o m e o f m y l i f e’s g r e at e st
m o m e n t s i n Ö v e r k a l i x. From shooting films to
playing ice hockey for Team Salming against Överkalix
IK. Börje Salming was indeed playing, as well as many
other legends. I’ve been sauna bathing in Ängesån and
felt the warmth of the midnight sun. Test driven a Harley
Davidson and even driven a hot rod whilst singing
“Smoke on the water”. I’ve scared anglers by shoving
old stubs in order to create fake bear traces. Been paddling
a Canadian canoe in Kamelunge, confessed my sins
to Pohjanaen in Sirillius church. Starred in the play
“Miss Julie” at Brännaberget one Midsummer’s eve (I left
my theatre costume in Stockholm - as I was so eager to
get to Överkalix that I only packed my fishing tools and
forgot everything else - true story). Been fishing salmon
with Mikkey Dee from Motörhead at Arctic Range, and
done a whole lot of mischief that’s not suitable for print,
so I think we’ll stop here…!
visitors the best side of Överkalix. I recall all the gifts
I’ve received, from filming in Sanningslandet where we
were offered freshly made pancakes with cloudberry,
the gold of the forest, to the day I was to catch my first
salmon of 10 kilo using a fly rod in Ängesån. Yeah that’s
actually how it happened – it was a gift. Ronny Carlsson,
renowned salmon fisherman and fly fishing guru
brought me out to Ängesån. We walked to the spot he
calls “Hällan”, you’d be surprised by how many salmon
were caught – in total it was about 14. When Ronny had
a salmon on the hook he asked calmly: “Do you want
to try?”
Of course I do, I thought to myself and grabbed the rod
with shivering hands. With a whistling sound, 25 metres
of line flew out, then another 25 metres. When will this
end (?) I thought before Ronny leaned over, cigarette in
his hand, saying “It’s probably not so small after all.”
I’ve always loved north
” Sweden and it’s people.
Swedish actor Rafael Edholm
The first time I saw Överkalix when driving across Hällabron,
was in early June 1999. I was on my way up north
to shoot a film in the wilderness, “Järngänget”. The film
was directed by Jon Lindström and starred Alexander
Skarsgård, Josephine Bornebusch, Marika Lagercrantz,
as well as the now deceased actors Per Oscarsson who
played my father and Emil Forselius who played my
younger brother. The brilliant Jens Fischer was there to
catch each moment on film. I was already fantasizing,
even the name ÖVERKALIX mesmerized me, and to be
able to film in these incredibly beautiful surroundings
was like a dream. Having an X in a name, a town name,
really impresses me. The fact that I’ve always loved nature
and never minded long walks out in the wilderness,
preferably with a fishing rod in my hand, didn’t make
things worse. This was the start of the adventure.
I’ve always loved Norrland and its people. When I first
arrived in Norrbotten at Kallax Airport, yet another
X, my heart skipped a beat. I had yearned to travelled
there ever since I was little, having read numerous articles
about the fishing, the famous salmon fishing in
particular. When driving from Luleå I could feel the excitement
already. This was where I was going to spend
almost two months and a big part of me felt at home
already.
I entered the Grand Arctic Hotel holding a bunch of fishing
rods and waders. The hotel resembled a palace in the
middle of the outback. There I was treated to such hospitality
by everyone. From my understanding that hospitality
still lives on as the hotel now lets refugees enjoy
the fantastic location and the stunning views. That’s
HUGE, and something I know that the locals in Överkalix
are immensely proud of. They always want to show
An hour later a 10 kilo salmon lay on “Hällan”. The
following day this fish was served to the film crew,
prepared by the film chef number 1, Bengt “the king”
Karlsson, whom was instantly employed as our chef.
He served me my first “Klämma” with potatoes, onion,
sour cream and fermented herring. Before this I’d always
avoided this type of food, but Bengt managed to
change my mind. Consider yourself lucky if you get to
experience food made in Bengt’s muurikka where everything
from culinary Mediterranean specialties to local
wild stews have been prepared. You could write a novel
about this man! It’s such a lovely feeling to slowly move
along the Kalix River in Bengt’s warm sauna, with the
midnight sun as the backdrop.
When in Överkalix you might also be lucky enough to
meet the funniest man in Sweden, and I’m not talking
about Robert Gustavsson or the other people calling
themselves comedians, but Jocke Andersson from Vännäs,
or Kron which he’s sometimes called. I was lucky
to get him to play one of the big parts in “Babas Bilas”
which I wrote and directed.
Well, if I’m to sum up Överkalix, it’s not that hard: I
love it and I long to be there when I’m not there. Plus,
now I know where to find them - the 10 kilos salmons
in Ängesån!
These places are well worth a visit: Bengt’s sauna raft
(River Rafter), Vippabacken, the Tractor Museum and
Jockfall. Learn the art of fly-fishing from Erling Holmström
and Ronny Landin. Or just do what I usually do;
visit Kron and put a note on the table saying “I’ve gone
to the woods, not sure when I’ll be back – Kisses // R.”
The red gold of the Bothnian Bay
The huge flow of fresh water from the rivers in the northern
area make up for the world’s largest brackish water archipelago
between Haparanda archipelago and south of Piteå. This
is the only place where the vendace provide the exclusive and
yellowish caviar - Kalix löjrom - also known as the red gold of
the Bothnian Bay. The roe harvest normally starts mid-September
and continues until the vendace are ready for spawning
around late October. You can fish between the hours of 6am
to 6pm. This is simply to prevent interfering with the reproduction.
Trawling accounts for almost the entire fishing volume
and occurs only in well-defined areas with limited permits for
trawling.
The Archipelago
SUN, SEA AND ARCHIPELAGO
p s st! Did you know that Kalix and Haparanda archipelago
together have just over 440 kilometres of
coastline? That’s approximately the same distance
as the route between Stockholm and Gothenburg
by car.
Most of Haparanda archipelago is a national
park with a rich bird life and magnificent scenery.
One tip is to take the tour boat over to Sandskär
or if you prefer to go by car - cross the bridge to
the island of Seskarö. These are only two of the
archipelago’s many gems.
Kalix river meets the sea in the centre of Kalix –
it’s such a lovely feeling to stop for a moment and
imagine this place during the timber industrial era,
when logs from the entire river stretch gathered
right here, at the mouth of the sea.
This is a place where freshwater meet brackish
water, creating a unique terroir which gives Kalix
bleak roe its very own characteristic. It has a status
of Protected Designation of Origin, issued by the
European Union (same as Champagne and Parma
ham) and is in fact the only Swedish product with
the PDO status. So, don’t leave Kalix without
having tried Kalix bleak roe - there’s no better
place to try it!
Many visitors choose to go fishing by boat as
it gives you a different sense of freedom; as there
are so many islands, you can even find your very
own island for fishing. If you don’t have access to
a boat, it’s perfectly fine to fish along the coast.
This is especially rewarding in the beginning of the
summer if you are pike fishing. Every year plenty
of pikes measuring over 100 centimeters are caught
here. Another exciting fishing opportunity in the
archipelago is dry fly fishing for grayling. There is
a good chance to catch both whitefish and trout in
the fall. It’s easy to find your own favorite spot in
one of the many islands and cays.
Not only does the surroundings of the archipelago
feel almost magical, it’s something special
about the fresh air and the waters. It creates a great
feeling of wellbeing. This region is also one of the
areas in Sweden most prone to sunshine, which
makes the experience even more enticing.
Delicacy
Roe is considered a delicacy, not only in Sweden but around
the world. It’s not uncommon to hear that “Kalix löjrom is
of world class” which Stockholm Grande Hôtel’s reputable
kitchen would agree with. It is the strictly maintained and consistently
high level of quality that impresses the most. No other
roe is as dry and firm as Kalix löjrom - not to forget the taste of
course! It’s rich and hearty flavour of minerals and sea make it
stand for something pure and genuine. To put it simply - this is
a superb craftsmanship.
Roe Safari ‘from fish to dish’
If you’d like to be a Bothnian Bay fisherman for the day, and
follow the journey of the Kalix löjrom from the sea to the
making of a world class delicacy, look no further. At Land och
Strand in Pålänge, you can book a spot on the Roe Safari - and
it’s not like any other safari. It offers a package with lodging,
caviar breakfast, full board and sauna in the local pub. For
An adventure on rail
You can almost feel a tingling sensation in your body when you start riding
the trolley on the disused railway Haparandabanan, filled with history.
Although the trolley weights 60 kg, it is actually easier to ride than a bicycle
- it moves very smoothly along the railway!
Haparandabanan starts in Morjärv and ends in Haparanda. If you want to
you can pedal all the way, ninety striking kilometres, or opt for a shorter
distance. The trolleys are based by the station in Vitvattnet and the path
features forests, bridges, lakes and swamps - not a rare sight in these part
of the woods. Bring a picnic basket or why not make a stop at one of the
restaurants to enjoy lunch or perhaps a cup of coffee and start the railway
journey with your family!
There is something special about being
so close to the king of the forest - a visit
the whole family! Don’t forget your
Tractor museum
Are you interested in tractors? If yes, look no further. In
Svartbyn, Överkalix, you can find Sweden’s northernmost
tractor museum with the district’s entire tractor history
gathered in one place. There are about 30 different tractor
models, some of which are real rarities; including John
Deere, Case och Oliver. The oldest one is a John Deere BR
from 1934. If you want to know more, Holger is the person
to ask. One thing is for sure - there’s much to discover!
Jockfall – Salmon fishing for adrenaline junkies
If you prefer a more “hardcore” fishing experience, Jockfall
might just be for you. The pools beneath this waterfall consists
of big bays, making them the perfect resting place for salmon.
If the salmon stays in this area, catching them isn’t that
difficult. However, convincing the fish to stay there isn’t the
easiest of tasks, which is why you’ll occasionally see people
running across rocks to be able to catch the salmon before it
makes its way back to the sea again. When it’s time for a meal
we recommend a visit to the on-site restaurant where you can
order a “jockfallare” amongst other dishes. The jockfallare
is made of homemade soft thin bread, marinated salmon or
venison stew, potatoe, clarified butter and onion. Jockfall
Fishing
SALMON FISHING IN EASTERN NORRBOTTEN
- How come you have become so interested in Swedish
salmon fishing?
Lars: To me, salmon fishing is about three things.
The chance to catch a really big salmon, the beautiful
nature with large wild rivers and two-handed fishing,
preferably with a 15 foot fishing rod.
Ronny: I was brought up close to the river, and my
parents managed Jockfall camping during my entire
childhood, therefore my interest in Swedish salmon
fishing came naturally.
- The salmon fishing has improved over the last
couple of years, why do you think that is?
Lars: A big part is the fact that both Sweden and
Finland have put an end to professional fishing in the
southern Baltic Sea, thanks to the efforts of Östersjölaxälvar
and Sportfiskarna and their hard work against
this type of fishing. In my opinion we’re not completely
there yet, but we’re getting there and I have a positive
outlook on the future.
Ronny: Because of sea and coast regulations, and in
addition people are getting better at releasing some of
the fish that get caught.
Photo: Ted Logardt
Two men in particular have made sure that this area has reached
international fame for salmon fishing. Lars Munk and Ronny Landin
have been fishing salmon for many years, talking about salmon,
thought about salmon, arranged guided tours and convinced
many others to think about, you guessed right – salmon!
- How big was the biggest salmon you caught in
Norrbotten in 2015?
Lars: It was a real big piece at 111 cm, caught in the
month of June. 2015 was a really good year for big
salmon, practically all rivers saw big salmon. The largest
registered salmon as far as I know is the one that
Kristian Stridsman caught at Kengis Bruk measuring
128 cm.
Ronny: It was a 100 cm long male salmon from Jockfall.
The salmon just couldn’t resist a Willy Gunn.
- Do you sometimes bring salmon home with you, or
do you release all fish that you catch?
Lars: I usually bring home two salmon per seasons,
mostly because my family loves it. Myself, I prefer
eating moose.
Ronny: I didn’t bring home any salmon for eating in
2015, but previously I’ve brought one home per season.
- What’s your best tips for anyone who wants to experience
the fishing in eastern Norrbotten?
Lars: Make sure that you work on your throwing
technique beforehand, as it’s a shame to spend your
whole holiday practicing your throwing technique.
Also, bring a well-stocked fly box with flies measuring
from 2 to 10 cm. If it’s the first time you visit our rivers,
contact a local guide! You don’t need a week’s guiding,
but an introduction which teaches you about what’s
been working and what areas have been extra productive
recently can prove useful. The rivers in Norrland
aren’t always easy to read.
Ronny: Make sure you’ve got plenty of time, a two-day
visit is not ideal. Speak with the locals as they can
provide tips and tricks.
Culture
EASTERN SWEDISH LAPLAND – A COLOURFUL REGION
i t’s a colo u r f u l re g i o n, east e r n sw e d i s h
l a p l a n d. Perhaps that has to do with the fact that
in days gone by the populations of the two river
valleys were isolated, each on its own side of the
mountain crest separating them. In those days the
rivers were the transportation channels in both
summer and winter and the obvious pantry year
round. Settlements and villages grew up around the
rivers, subsequently developing into meeting places
and communities. Completely different languages
have developed along both of the river valleys.
By the river Kalix River, in Överkalix, Överkalixbondskan
is one of the country’s most distinctive
dialects. It differs markedly from the dialect spoken
in the neighbouring municipality of Kalix. And in
Tornedalen, Torne River Valley, a minority language
known as Meänkieli, or “Torne Valley Finnish”,
is spoken. It is closely related to Finnish. That’s
fascinating, considering that only a few kilometres
separate the two valleys. And in addition to these
three languages, Swedish, Finnish and Sami also
are spoken in the region. The border culture has
many different aspects, and at Tornedalen Museum
you can learn more about all of the dramatic
historical events that have left their stamp on life in
the area.
The churches in eastern Swedish Lapland are
unquestionably worth a tour of their very own. The
church in Kalix is, in fact, Sweden’s northernmost
medieval church. In the Övertorneå church you can
see and listen to Sweden’s oldest organ. And you
will clearly see that the region has had, and continues
to have, exchan- ges in an east-west direction
when you visit the orthodox churches in Överkalix
and Haparanda. Sauna culture is something of a
religion of its own for eastern Swedish Lapland.
Those who believed that there is only one way to
bathe in a sauna have a lot to explore with us. Try
your hand at distinguishing between an electric
and wood-fired sauna, between a smoke sauna and
a steam sauna. And don’t miss allowing the whisk
of birch twigs to bring your skin back to life in the
heat. Now that you are here in winter, it’s obligatory
to jump right out in the snow, directly from
the sauna without a stitch of clothing. Guaranteed
rejuvenation.
The handicrafts culture is strong, and the
region’s very own hallmark is genuine and wellmade
products of the highest quality. Look for
Made in Kalix products and Kero’s supreme leather
crafts in Sattajärvi. Or visit Simu Nordic in Övertorneå.
Many tourist offices in the area sell local crafts
and can tell you more about the many skilled artisans.
and culture. Join a guided tour through the beautiful village
with its Fishing Museum and Sauna Museum. You’ll discover
how the locals worked around and in the river over 500 years
the same!). www.kukkolaforsen.se
Unique whitefish fishing with net
Whitefish fishing in Kukkolaforsen is like no other fishing
experience. The method used here originates from the 16th
century and involves a net with a long shaft. This method is also
unique from a geographical point of view – it’s only used in the
Amazon River in Brazil and here in eastern Norrbotten! This
method is normally used from the beginning of June through to
mid-September.
Fancy trying this unique fishing method? At Kukkolaforsen Turist
& Konferens guests are offered the opportunity to try this unique
fishing experience. Net, fishing and instructor are catered for.
Plus, you’ll get to keep all fish you catch during the hour!
Though, you don’t need to fish yourself to be able to enjoy
exquisite flavours. In the restaurant you can order various dishes
prepared from local produce and fish caught in the area. How
about grilled whitefish in herbal sauce or a roasted salmon?
The man who’s all about
saunas
It’s safe to say that what Svante Spolander doesn’t know
about saunas, isn’t worth knowing. He was born and raised
in Kukkola in the central parts of Torne Valley. Here the
sauna is a natural part of everyday life; the place where life
begins, where life goes on and where life ends.
- I use the sauna every day, it’s my life elixir. There I get to
enjoy some peace and quiet for myself and get a chance to
clear my head and regain energy, says Svante Spolander.
In fact, one of Svante’s first childhood memories features
the sauna. He recalls looking for his father and then found
him and other men from the village in the public sauna.
- As a little boy, at first this was a terrifying experience, all
these men and the heat from the steam. The fear soon gave
away for a sense of belonging that’s not very easy to explain.
There in the heat, without a stitch of clothing, everyone’s
the same: young or old, tall or short, Finnish or Swedish. All
wrongs and arguments are left outside the sauna. The sauna is
indeed a place for reconciliation and ever since that moment,
the sauna has been in my heart, says Svante and puts his hand
on his chest.
The resident exhibition of Tornedalens Museum, ”Möten på
of the people living here: why they have chosen this area and
how they’ve lived their lives. Visit the exhibition and find out
what archeological findings can tell us about the life thousands
and even hundreds of thousands years ago, learn about traditional
Fish is a local delicacy and a culinary must in
this area. Salmon, grayling, whitefish and not to
the gourmet menus - Kalix bleak roe (Kalix
can’t be missed!
Local cuisine differs from place to place in
Northern Sweden and this is something a foodie
will notice. Locals refer to the border between Kalix
and Torne River as a ”bread line”. An excellent
opportunity to explore the different tastes between
the Torne valley cornbread Rieska and the Kalix
river Klådda made of wheat. Why not try coffee
cheese? It’s a modern Lappish dessert made from
cow’s beestings. The milk is curdled and set to form
a disk and then baked in the oven which gives it its
distinctive charred marks. Traditionally served in
slices as a side dish with coffee (yes it’s true!) and
if you’re lucky, it’s served with cloudberry jam on
Överkalix’s own brewmastress
tj e r is the na m e o f the fa r m in öv e r k a l i x
where Frida Andersson grew up. She is the founder
of the one and only brewery in the area. Frida
named her microbrewery after the farm and it must
have been meant to be. Tjers sounds very similar
to the English word “cheers” and suits undeniably
well in this context. You’ll hear lots of cheering at
the beer tasting sessions, that’s for sure.
Frida is passionate about beer these days! It’s an
interest she’s developed over the years and the idea
to start up her own brewery came to mind during
an internship at a winery in South Australia (yes
that’s right!) She was previously studying at Grythyttan
University to become a sommelier but she’s
now changed course slightly.
That’s how it all began. The whole process started
off in a rapid pace going from brewing beer at
home to renovating a brewery and ordering excellent
shiny fermentation tanks from Germany - all
to be able to produce local beer with a distinctive
touch of Överkalix.
From thinking about starting a brewery to actually
going through with it has been a dream come
true for Frida. It has been an exciting time and she
wants to keep going.
”The job should always be exciting and challenging
there is always something new to try and
new flavours to discover. It’s great fun to try and
see what flavours go well together and combining
different flavours when producing beer. The more
you learn about how to influence the flavours the
more fun it becomes“, says Frida with a smile on
her face.
As Frida has her roots in Överkalix, she strives
to make a local beer which expresses not only
taste and feel but also the nature and way of life
in the area. She has also chosen to name the beers
using different dialect words from the local tongue
Överkalixmålet: Kå:L SwåRtt (stout), Hå:mle (IPA)
and Lios (pale ale) This means pitch dark, hops and
light in local tongue.
You can tell that this is traditional craftsmanship
with local production when you hear Frida describe
the whole manual process step by step from
milled malt all the way to bottling and labelling.
The feeling is there, and this is probably the reason
the beer from Tjers brewery tastes so good.
Welcome to Tjers brewery in beautiful Överkalix!
Tips!
ACCOMMODATION
Stay at a traditional
town hotel - Stadshotellet
Haparanda, with Stadshotellet in its centre, has at times been the
European town with the fastest pulse. This was especially true at the
time when Haparanda was the only point of contact between the
West and the large empires in the East – Russia, Persia and China. This
was a place where revolutionaries, anarchists, spies, agents, sawmill
barons, military and madams, counts and barons made their mark
on history. Everything from the smell, the mystique and excitement of
this era is forever engrained in Haparanda Stadshotell exterior and
especially its interior. It’s one of the most famous turn-of-the-century
hotels, restored to its former glory with the authentic character. Stay
the night in Haparanda Stadshotell and feel the history in the walls.
Stay in a cottage - enjoy the
peacefulness
8 Seasons offer accommodation in lovely cottages on the
countryside. Guests can experience everything up close -
hiking, biking, walking, boating, as well as picking berries
and mushrooms. The cottages are beautifully situated in
Welcome to Sweden´s northernmost destination!
In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the
Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights
in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the
midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with
thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with
water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around
the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and
river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the
north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer.
Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even
stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us.
www.swedishlapland.com
Heart of Lapland is the local destination company that seeks to develop and market the tourism
industry in Kalix, Haparanda, Överkalix, Övertorneå and Pajala. Here in the borderlands between
east and west, we refine our lifestyle and everyday life into unforgettable experiences and season
them with the warm reception for which the area is known. Heart of Lapland is owned by its
members and is part of Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, the regional industry-governed platform
for collaboration on the tourism industry in northernmost Sweden. www.heartoflapland.com
