F r o m t h e H e a d m a s t e r It is with great excitement and pride that I begin my second year as the leader of the Waverley College community. Following an engaging year of listening to a wide range of views about and experiences of life at Waverley College, we are about to embark on a journey of transformation and improvement which will enhance our strong reputation in the community. I have been privileged to consult with parents, Old Boys, students and staff about our strengths and challenges as an educational community. Four things have emerged as key to our future: ? To continue our proud, successful educational tradition as an inclusive independent Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, engaging with the broader community through educational leadership, outreach and relationship building. ? To provide meaningful opportunities for staff, students and parents to lead and work together in a climate of respect, affirmation, flexibility and collaboration, supported by a clear understanding of roles, conditions and responsibilities. ? To develop and establish a Learning Innovation Paradigm which will transform the ways in which all learning and teaching is viewed and supported in our Pre-School, Junior and Senior Schools With Old Boy General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC at the Centenary of Foundation Reville Mess ? To prudently and proactively manage and build our resource base so that our inclusive, transformative learning goals remain at the forefront of our mission as a Catholic school. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with many individuals and groups in reaching these conclusions. Everything I have experience during my first year – engaged student learning, a dedicated staff, a strong co-curricular and sporting tradition, a challenging Social Justice program, committed parent involvement and lasting connections between Old Boys and the College – are further proof of this. The most important reality for me is the fact that we identify ourselves unapologetically as a Catholic School, celebrating together, forming just leaders for the future and responding to the needs of others. Ray Paxton Headmaster Immersion to India N o v e m b e r - D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 0 At the end of last year a colleague, Dane Inman and I headed off to Kolkata. The trip was a reconnaissance mission. We were to visit projects that Waverley College might consider helping through fund-raising. The possibility of future immersions for students was also discussed. I had been to Kolkata before but Dane had not. He was immediately caught off-guard by the noise, pollution and the sheer busyness of the city. Twenty two million people inhabit the city during business hours! We visited the city garbage dump which is home to 5000 people. The people survive by picking through the garbage and selling what they can. There is one water pump and no toilets. We were both traumatized at what we saw. We hope to help build a school and clinic here. We were very fortunate to visit Arunachal Pradesh on the Tibetan border. The Christian Brothers have a school here which Waverley helped fund. The plight of women in this very isolated community is heart breaking. Girls as young as 10 years old are traded for livestock. Polygamy is common as is domestic violence. The Brothers, through education, are helping to change entrenched sexist attitudes. One young brother runs a Women's Empowerment Group. I was invited along to a meeting. Enough to say that I'll never complain about my life again!! Our travel guide, Br Ralph, exposed us to lots of projects that the Brothers have set up. Edmund Rice would be so proud of these men who literally dedicate their lives to making a difference to the most materially poor people on the planet. The hospitality we received from the Brothers everywhere we went was just wonderful. They also counselled us and put things in perspective at the end of another harrowing day. The trip was exhausting, both physically and emotionally. It has certainly 'disturbed' me but that was its purpose…. Geraldine Cullen Social Justice Coordinator. 2
The class of 2010 is celebrating a number of excellent group and individual results in the 2010 H.S.C. Waverley College congratulates the Class of 2010 The highlights include: 80% of results for exams complete were in the Band 4, 5 or 6 categories (a mark of 70 or higher). The figures below indicate very few marks less than 50 in any course 90 Band 6 / E4 (a mark of 90 or better) 336 Band 5 / E3 (a mark between 80 – 89) 294 Band 4 / E2 (a mark between 70 - 79) 135 Band 3 / E1 (a mark between 60 – 69) 28 Band 2 (a mark between 50 – 59) 3 Band 1 (a mark below 50) 80% of courses studied achieved results above the state average. The Sydney Morning Herald Honour Roll highlighted Mathematics and English. Mathematics Extension 2, 100% of students achieved a course mark of greater than 45 out of 50. Mathematics 2 Unit, 86% of students achieved a course mark of greater than 70 out of 100. English Advanced, 95% of students achieved a course mark of greater than 70 out of 100. Drama, Food Technology, History Extension, Music Courses I & II, German and Visual Arts,100% of students achieved a course marks greater than 70 out of 100. Anthony O’Rourke and Lloyd Wood were included in the HSC All-Rounders List (Band 6 inall subjects) Congratulations to the following students who received an ATAR above 90.
