In 1985 the Waverley College Cadet Unit
held the first Reveille Mess Dinner. This event
was designed to mark the start of cadet
training for the year, hence the title
“Reveille”, named after the bugle call for the
start of the day.
The dinner brings together the newly
appointed senior ranks of the Unit (Year 12
boys who are Cadet Under Officers or Cadet
Warrant Officers) and their fathers, together
with Old Boys of Waverley College who
served in the senior ranks of the Cadet Unit.
As part of the Cadet Unit's Centenary of
Foundation events the dinner of 2011 was
attended by 350 guests at the The Sofitel
Sydney Wentworth Hotel. Amongst these
was the Unit's Guest of Honour, General
Peter Cosgrove (Ret'd), AC, MC, former
Chief of Defence. General Cosgrove
delivered the Reveille Toast, which followed
Toasts to the Australian Army Cadet Corps
and the Waverley College Cadet Unit.
Following General Cosgrove's address, the
current OC of the Unit, LTCOL (AAC) Peter
Frost, a College contemporary of General
Cosgrove, carried out the “Roll Call”,
assisted by the Unit RSM, Cadet Warrant
Officer Francis O'Neill. The roll call covered a
remarkable span of the ages with former
senior ranks represented from 1947 through
to 2010. Some Cadet Old Boys had travelled
from Europe and Asia to be present on this
occasion. Souvenir “regimental” ties and
Unit cuff links were available for purchase on
the night, and all guests received a souvenir
lapel badge featuring the Unit crest.
Other notable guests on the occasion
included the Headmaster of the College,
Mr. Ray Paxton, The Hon. Mr. Justice Barry
O'Keefe, AM (Ret) and Brother Paul Oakley,
representing the Christian Brothers and
former Headmasters of Waverley College,
whose support for the Unit was so influential
in the continuation of the Cadet Unit.
Current NCOs in the Unit wore historical
uniforms from the Unit's history and a
continuous slide show on a plasma television
provided many guests with some poignant
memories from their past in the Unit.

Later in the year, on 18 September, the
Unit will hold its annual Ceremonial Parade.
On this occasion the Unit will receive a new
set of flags, donated by the Old Boys Union
