132 Dipole Antenna Equations<br />

Shown be<strong>lo</strong>w is a typical half-wave dipole antenna. The radiation<br />

pattern of a Hertz dipole antenna is perpendicular to the axis of<br />

the antenna. In directions other than the optimum directions, the<br />

antenna is ineffective.<br />

To calculate the wavelength of a signal, l or the dipole length, L, or<br />

the frequency, f, of a half-wave dipole antenna, use the fol<strong>lo</strong>wing<br />

three formulas:<br />

l = Wavelength (m)<br />

k = Ve<strong>lo</strong>city Factor<br />

c = Speed of light = 3 x 10 8 (m/s)<br />

f = Frequency (Hz)<br />

L = Length of the Dipole (m)
