There are still plenty of interesting concerts however. H!~re are a few "highlights" to help get you going. Royal Conservatory of Music World Music Festival The RCM has annourx:ed that it will be offering instruction in a wide variety of "world music" disciplines starting in September. The rationale for this radical development is, according to Jeff Melanson, Dean of the RCM's Community School, that "with world music now an integral part of our musical vocabulary, we want ... our students to be ... well-rounded musicians ... [with] a thorough overview of different types of music .... " To J.auix:h the new initiative, the RCM will present four June concerts of music from different cultures. He sounds like the next James Galway to me. Get out and hear him before he is "discovered." Aram Khachaturian June 6 marks the lOOth anniversary of the birth of Armenian composer, Aram Khachaturian. The Komitas Musical Association will celebrate the occasion on June 28 with a concert at Ryerson Theatre, with the Canadiana Symphony Orchestra and Komitas Choir conducted by David Varjabed and soloists, violinist Haik Davtian, soprano Y ana Ivanilova and tenor Sarkis Koundalcjian. Just six days after the composer's birth date the TSO will also feature Khachaturian's work. L TM's Miss Annie Just a few days later, on June 21, an authentic Jamaican musical, Miss Annie, will be performed twice by the Little Theatre Movement Pantomime Company of Jamaica at the Main Stage Theatre of the Toronto Centre for the Arts. The story is based on the legendary life of the infamous Annie Palmer, who lived a colourful life of luxury as the mistress of a great house and the wife of several husbands, few if any of whom survived the experience! "Pantomime" in the Caribbean is not mime as we know it, but rather a mixture of pageantry, folklore, legends and current issues, presented in song, dance, acting and music.
