pie, carrot cake, red velvet cake, and German chocolate cake.
The theme for this year’s prom originated from the Black Eyed Peas song “I Got A
Feeling”, with the colors black, silver, and royal blue. The decorations were phenomenal, and a
huge thanks goes out to Mrs. Wright and all those who helped plan and decorate for such a
spectacular night.
The music, by DJ
Tony Carbaugh and the
help of Tanner
Carbaugh, set the night
off on a good note. The
songs ranged from line
dances such as the
Cupid Shuffle to
Black and Yellow by
Wiz Khalifa. The
dance floor was most
certainly crowded
from the beginning
of the night to the
very end. As the
Seniors Tyler Meredith, Jake Hedrick, Josh Yost, Blake H. Martin, and Tanner evening came to an
Carbaugh begin their evening dressed in their tuxedos and ready to have a good time.
end, dancers left
with a full stomach and plenty of exercise. As everyone began to leave, the girls were treated
at the door with a picture keychain and the boys with a deck of cards adorned in a nice case.
After leaving Dublin, many made their way to King Johnson for the After Prom party
hosted by Donna Stump. Beginning at 12:30, The Saltine Project with members Blake H.
Martin, Tanner Carbaugh, Gianni Massaro, and Jake Hedrick, played an hour long set
consisting of covers such as “Erase Me” by Kid Cudi and several originals. Following the
band, Brian Eslick, famous hypnotist, amused the crowd with his hour long performance.
Volunteers were called up to the stage to be hypnotized. However, according to Mr. Eslick,
“you can only be hypnotized if you want to be hypnotized.” The After Prom party also
consisted of several bounce houses set up in the gym, a Minute to Win It room, a gambling
room, and sumo wrestling. In the cafeteria, the kids were greeted with delicious food served
by the parent volunteers. GHS prom goers thank all who volunteered to make this night so
special!
“…That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night!”
The 2011 Junior-Senior Prom was much a success this
year. On Saturday, April 30, Giles High School Juniors
and Seniors (and guests) all made their way to Edwards
Hall at New River Community College. Tickets cost $60
per couple and only $30 per person. The doors opened
promptly at 5:30 for pictures by Magnifico Photography
and dinner started at 7. The meal was catered by Country
Kitchen out of Christiansburg and consisted of BBQ
chicken, baked ham, roast beef, corn, mashed potatoes,
broccoli and cheese, macaroni and cheese, green beans,
tossed salad, slaw,
potato salad, rolls,
lemonade, water,
tea, cherry pie,
apple pie, pecan
April Teacher of the Month
Lauren Green by Brittany Agee
Ms. Green grew up in Princeton, West Virginia. She graduated at Concord University in
2005 with a Bachelors Degree in Studio Art and Art Education K-12. She has taught four years at
Giles teaching Art 1 and Exploratory Art 8. Her greatest challenge is to inspire students to
believe in themselves and their artistic abilities. Ms. Green also tries to motivate students and
keep them excited and confident about their projects and the class itself.
May Teacher of the Month
Babette Martin by Marti Williams
SAE (Students Active in Education) have chosen the May teacher of the month to
be Mrs. Martin, our favorite Algebra teacher. After 24 years of teaching it is safe to say
that this honor is well deserved. Mrs. Martin has devoted countless hours to helping her
students understand one of the hardest high school subjects, math. In addition to her
before school tutoring she also helps out with Prom, organizes the GHS relay for life
fundraiser, and serves as the Math Department Chair person. When asked what her
favorite part of teaching is, she told us, “I really enjoy watching the students mature and
grow into young adults from 8th graders to 12th graders. I also love the challenge
of helping students see that they are in control of their education and their future
and how Math is going to be an important part of the rest of their life!” Well said
Mrs. Martin, keep up that awesome teaching!

Retiring Teachers
Anne Wheeler by Erica Shaver
After 32 exciting years, Anne Wheeler is exiting the hallowed halls of GHS. Mrs. Wheeler earned
a Bachelor of Science degree in general science and home economics with three teaching
endorsements. She was offered a teaching position at PATS alternative school working with students
from both Giles and Narrows. Mrs. Wheeler left PATS after the summer of 1983 to join the facility at
Giles High School. She began teaching Physical Science along with coaching girls and boys track. An
earth Science endorsement was being obtained at Radford University. She was also teaching foods and
nutrition, exploratory work and family studies. Anne Wheeler was an assistant girl’s track coach for 25
years and also coached cross country and volleyball for a short time as well. In 2007, she was
recognized by the VHSL as the group A assistant Girl’s Track coach of the year. Along with Judy
Mann, she established the chapter for SADD and shared co-sponsor duties for 10 years. Mrs. Wheeler
has sponsored the Monogram Club and ran winter concessions for 22 years.
Recently Mrs. Wheeler reached the most difficult decision of her life by choosing to retire at the end of this year. She is not sure
how emotionally she will deal with leaving students and colleagues that are one of the most revered aspects of her life. She loved
working with her students both in the classroom, on the track, or during all sorts of extracurricular activities. There isn’t a better place
in the world to be than at Giles High with wonderful people who care deeply for each other. Long term plans include opening a small
business within a year.
Earl Ventry by Lauren Craft
Earl Ventry, teacher of chemistry and physical science at GHS for 35 years, is
retiring this year. Mr. Ventry was born in south Florida, but grew up in several small
towns in the panhandle of Florida. Mr. Ventry says, “We moved around a lot and I went
to 12 different schools from first grade through my senior year.” Mr. Ventry graduated
in 1976 from Florida State University in Tallahassee. When asked about what motivated
him to become a teacher Mr. Ventry states, “I come from a family of teachers. My
mother taught English and I had sisters who taught K-3 and English and music and my
brother taught math and computers.” After retirement, Mr. Ventry plans to drive some
for the Blacksburg Transit and maybe a tour bus company and look for other part-time
work. He says what he will miss most about GHS is the interaction with lots of
wonderful people, and he wishes everyone all the best. Good luck, Mr. Ventry!
Carolyn Painter by Brittany Agee
Caroline Painter was born in Pearisburg, Virginia but moved to Monroe County, West Virginia.
She graduated at West Virginia University with an undergraduate degree in english and home
economics. While teaching in Columbus, Ohio, she attended Ohio State to work on a graduate
degree in special education. After her husband’s graduation from Ohio State, they moved back to
Giles County. Ms. Painter has taught 14 years in Columbus, and two semesters as long term
substitutes. She has taught self-contained special education, English 11 and English 9. What she
loves most about teaching are the students. Over the past years, she has noticed that many students
show the “I don’t care” attitude. “It’s heartbreaking to see so much apathy in students.” Her plans
after retirement are playing, reading, sewing, knitting, weaving, canning her garden and traveling.
Theresa Beckner by Marti Williams
With the end of the school year getting closer still, it can be sad to think about who will be leaving Giles High campus
permanently. 2010-2011 marks the last year before retirement for our Librarian Mrs. Beckner, who
we will all miss dearly. Throughout her 39 years of teaching, she has spent 10 ½ of them here at
Giles, serving as our librarian who has always shown us a kind face when we are in need of books,
“Smile- that is something everyone
understands” – Theresa Beckner
research project assistance, or just a place to
study. In addition to her busy life of book
managing she has somehow found the time to
sponsor three different clubs, SAE (Students
Active in Education), The book club, and WGHS (News Crew). Mrs. Beckner tells us, “I will miss
working with students on the news and with helping students with their research and projects. Also,
I will miss all the good books and discussing them with students.” She advises the next librarian to
use each day to learn something new and to take time each day to read something of their own
choice. “I have many special memories,” she begins, “ most of them center around helping students
and seeing them learn and grow. For several years the students I taught in 4 th grade went through
the high school and I was able to work with them again and to see how they grew up. At one time, I
had taught half of the high school. It was a great experience to share the lives of young children and
then again as adolescents.” Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to our school Mrs. Beckner. We will never forget you!

Symphonic Chorale 2010-2011
by Brittany Agee
Director Larry Marion and pianist Nancy Noble work musically with 38
chorale members everyday in 6 th period. Before school began, they held their
annual chorale camp on Aug 1 st through the 5 th , where they learned new
songs and played various types of activities that the officers chose. They also
sold hotdogs at the Festival in the Park, Country Club, and Newport Fair.
As soon as school
started, they sang the new
pieces they learned over
chorale camp. When football
season kicked in, they
worked shifts in the
concession stand to raise
money for the chorale trip.
The Chorale practiced music
for their visit to Concord
University on November 4th,
trip.
where they performed with
high school and college
students at the Honors Choir
Festival. Chorale members
also rehearsed their
Christmas music for their Christmas Concert, which was on December 13 th ,
2010. Chorale members Blake H. Martin, Kyle Munsey, Elena Anderson,
Brittany Agee, Jennifer Bradley, and Marti Williams auditioned for All-
District Choir and passed. They each went to the All-District Concert which
was held at Giles High School on February 11 th and 12 th . Soon after, the
Chorale had to focus on the three songs, “Break Forth into Song”, “Festival
Gloria”, and “Joy in the Morning”, for Chorale Competition. They also had to
raise money for Chicago at local stores by asking for donations. With the
help of the community, everyone was able to make the profit needed for the
trip to Chicago. The Trip was held on April 7 th - 10 th . While traveling to the
windy city, they saw windmills and the times on their cellphones change. The
Chorale ate at a Chicago-styled pizza place named Giordano’s. They visited
Eli’s Cheesecake World, where they learned about “The taste of Chicago”.
The Chorale also went to a Blue Man Group concert, where toilet paper,
twinkies, paint, and other various items made the audience have fun. They
On the last day of Chorale Camp, Avery
Mahaney, Dyonna Austin, Brad Lipes, Jasman
and Sarah Givens splashed each other with
paint, ice-cream, and many other messy items.
Chorale members wait for their Chicago-styled
pizza to be delivered to the tables.
also went up 103 floors and dared themselves into standing over The Ledge on the Willis Tower, formally known as the Sears Tower.
The other places they visited were parks, museums, Navy Pier, and the mall. To conclude their stay, they went to Medieval Times,
where all the choirs that competed in Heritage Music Festival ate, watched a show, and won awards. The Chorale won a silver
“excellent” plaque. By finishing off the year, chorale students are singing everyday before the Chorale Concert on June 6 th . Stop by
and listen to some excellent singers!
The chorale stands proudly before their performance begins for the Heritage Music Competition.

Erica Shaver said, “The play was really good; it kept my attention.”
Giles High Dream Team
by Marti Williams
Senior Erica Johnson and teacher Pam Malabad
enjoy some good- natured joking around as the
game winds down.
Senior boys race down the court to defend their
goal from the teachers.
Friday, March 4 th
2011, Giles High School’s
gym could be found filled
to the brim with students
anxiously awaiting the
outcome of our annual
Senior Faculty game. Upon
entering the doors you
would soon find yourself in
the middle of an epic
basketball battle between
our beloved seniors and
teachers. While the teams
were obviously divided
between teachers and
seniors, they were also
divided by gender. The
ladies held the court for
half a quarter followed by
the guys for the remainder.
This hilarious game lasted
Coach Byron Hurley attempts to block Cody
Ratcliff from making a basket.
for a total of four quarters and proved to be quite entertaining for those who
were in the stands. All the players entered the court full of enthusiasm in the
hopes that their team would prove themselves the champions of the evening.
Giles students wanted nothing more than for this to be the year that the seniors
would finally school the teachers. Though our graduates pushed to come out on
top they proved no match to the expertise of the mighty teachers and ended the
game with a score of 28 to 79. Disappointment never to seemed to phase these
players or their fans considering most walked out that night laughing from the
events of the game. Congratulations once again teachers, and remember
Juniors, next year it’s your turn!
G.C.S.D. Goes National by Marti Williams
Giles County School of Dance has recently had one of its most memorable and
rewarding competition seasons on record. This dance team begins training for their
season in early September and by February they have polished their routines until
they shine with hopes of earning multiple awards and invitations. To start off the
year the group packed up
their dance bags and
traveled to Kannapolis,
North Carolina. While
there the Senior Team
unleashed their hard
This year the GCSD competition team gives
work to take home
a special honor to Sarah Carbaugh who will multiple High Gold
be graduating from Giles. Sarah plans to awards. In addition to
return to the team next year to compete even this many girls remarked
after graduation and enrolling at New River that they had received
College. “You can’t get rid of me that easy!” some of the highest
scores of their dancing
she says.
careers.
With the help of Jazz/Tap teacher Tashina Tickle and
Ballet/Contemporary teacher Evelyn Frye, each performer improved
drastically by the next competition, and obviously the judges took notice.
Just an hour
away in
Roanoke,
Virginia, the
dancers were
delighted to
find that their
routines had
received near
perfect scores
putting them
Pictured here is Marti Williams performing her
contemporary solo “Flightless Bird” by Iron and Wine.
This dance was choreographed by Evelyn Frye and
scored high enough to place in overall as well as send
Marti onto the next round for the Miss Dance
competition. (all picture credit goes to Lisa Reed,
G.C.S.D Studio Director.)
Marti Williams, Sarah Carbaugh, Bria Snidow,
and Kaley Tankersley show off their season’s
accomplishments including a trophy for the
highest scoring Senior group in the division.
Congratulations Ladies!
up to a Platinum award. Thanks to the upgraded scores four of the
teammates would be moving on to the next step, which in the dance
world is Nationals. Marti Williams (Giles) Kaley Tankersley (Narrows
High) Bria Snidow (Virginia Home school) and Becca Rash (Macy)
will head out to North Carolina to face hours of in class training,
interviews and a final performance in front of an audience in the hopes
of becoming Miss Dance America 2011. Nationals will also allow the
other team members to compete with their very own solos for other
adjudicated awards starting at Gold and working their way up. All the
hype of this prestigious event has got the girls in a frenzy, but they are
nonetheless ready to show off their talent. Make no mistake however,
as soon as Nationals are over they will begin to practice for next years competition season in the hopes that it will be as successful as
this year.

Varsity Baseball by Lauren Craft
The excitement surrounding this year’s Varsity
Baseball team isn’t for nothing. The boys have put in
hard work to achieve their success this season, and have
come off strong with an excellent record of 13-4 this
year. Coach Williams, the new coach in town this season,
has led the team to many successful wins this year. After
winning the district tournament this season, the team will
be headed to regionals with good prospects of heading to
the state tournament. The boys have shown outstanding
talent this season, defeating Glenvar 8-1, an outstanding
feat for a team that has lost to Glenvar the past several
years. The boys also crushed Radford this season,
winning 16-10. Senior Cody Vaughn says this about the
team: “The team is playing some good ball, and I look
forward to watching many more games.” Hats off to an
excellent season, boys!
an excellent job and some of the girls on JV who will be
moving up to Varsity will have to work hard and live up to
the Seniors that are leaving this year. The team has amazing
team work skills and have done a great job winning this
year. The girls haven’t given up when times were tough, but
picked up the pace and showed that pratice makes perfect.
The team has had a good season with an overall record of 3-
They will be even better next year; even though
some of the team may be moving on to Varsity
they will still do a great job. The girls have
Varsity Boys’ Soccer by Lauren Craft
The varsity boys have really kicked the soccer season off this year with a record of 11-3-1,
including a tie to Galax, and are 5-1 in the district. The boys have really shown their talent
throughout the district, knocking down almost every opponent standing in their way. The team is
on their way to closing the season with good prospects of making their way to the district
tournament. The team took a hard hit this season, losing one of their key players, senior Josh Yost.
He injured his knee and is unable to play for the rest of the season. Brad Kessinger, a starter, leads
the team with numerous assists. Matt Keaton ends the season as the lead scorer not only for the
Spartans and also one of the lead scorers for the region. The boy’s soccer team ends their season
high hopes to advance their way into the district and regional tournaments. Good luck and good
job, boys!
Springtime at Giles is
always an exciting time for
the young athletes who
come out to play soccer.
This year our J.V. Soccer
team has led an impressive
record with only 4 losses to
Christiansburg, George
Wythe and twice to Radford.
It is clear that despite all the
rainy weather and rescheduled
games our players
never let it get the best of
them. Coaches Scott
Keaton, Chris Howell, and
Grady Spiegel helped lead
the team to victory as well
as the two captains Devin
Elliot and Jake Spiegel. Joseph Lucas remarks that his favorite
part of the whole season was practicing at
Macy. Clearly for this team hard
work and practice was a key
element in their success. If you
happen to see a teammate be sure to
tell them good job on a fantastic
soccer season.
Girls Tennis by Brittany Agee
The girl’s tennis team couldn’t be more
proud of their season. I asked a couple of the girls
about how they felt about tennis this year. If there
was a challenge, how did they overcome it? What
was their favorite part about tennis? Emily
Galliher exclaimed, “Tennis was great this year!
We kicked butt! I think that with a record of 9-4
was a great achievement considering we only won
one match last season.” Alex Shelor replied, “The
team improved majorly this season. There is A
LOT of talent here! I think our biggest challenge
was to rebuild the team, since we lost practically
the whole team last year and the year before. My
favorite part of tennis would be simply playing the
game. It’s just a fun and challenging sport.” Nina
Johnson also added, “I’ve really enjoyed
this year and everyone has played on
higher levels. HUGE improvement!
Next year we will dominate!” Congrats
on placing 3 rd in the Districts!
