Until the End of Time
By Abby Johnson
Prom is a long awaited event in which
students plan for months. From getting a date
and choosing the perfect dress to picking out a
tuxedo, it can be very stressful. Although
Prom expenses have been raised, students still
find a way to make everything work. On April
26, students frantically and excitedly prepared
for one special night. The big event was held
at the Inn at Virginia Tech.
Doors opened at 6:00 and each
couple signed in and received a number
to know what time their pictures would
be taken. The theme was “Until the End
of Time,” with the song by Justin
Timberlake. The ballroom was filled
with blue and silver decorations along
with many clocks and each dinner table
had a beautiful vase of roses on it.
Dinner was served at 7:15 and everyone
seemed to enjoy the variety of tasty food:
two types of meat, salad, many
the dance floor. After dancing for a few
hours, Principal Greg Brown asked the
teenagers to take a seat to recognize the seniors. Then the prom court was finally announced.
Juniors Jarrod Alls and Gelsina
Ceritano won prince and princess while
Seniors Ben Mullins and Astleigh Hobbs
received the title of king and queen. “The
entire night was awesome and it made my
junior prom to get princess,” quoted
Gelsina. After the court and their dates
shared a dance, everyone else joined in
until shortly later the dance come to an
end. As students walked out they were
given mugs and glasses and the star the
couple’s names were on.
Students then traveled back to the
Pearisburg Community Center (K.J.) for a
“morning” of fun and games. Some
activities included ping-pong, playing the
Wii and Guitar Hero, bouncing on blow up
games, cards, rock climbing, air brushed
experience and memories will never be forgotten.
GHS Band Trip By R. Tanner Bivens
At midnight, April 1 st the GHS band left Giles County on a trip to
Orlando, Florida and Universal studios for their annual band trip. During
their five days in Orlando the band toured Universal Studios for two
days, made a splash in Wet and Wild, went to Coco Beach, and had a
barbeque on the pier. Drum line player Alex Lane said that “The whole
trip to Orlando was fun.” While clarinet player Alexis Ayers went
shopping and enjoyed the bus ride to Orlando. For some, like Stephanie
Green it was her first time riding a roller coaster which was The Revenge
of the Mummy.
The band also performed at China Wok in Universal Studios and
received a superior rating, the highest ranking that a band in the
time and is looking forward to next year.
Band student Alexis Ayers said “I felt surprised and very happy that we got a superior.”
When asked if they would get a superior rating on next years trip, Heather Katz and Carli Klecak said that they can not predict the
guaranteed to be a success.
jewel heist! It all begins around Rita’s Roller Skating Rink, where the children of the
that she’s installing a new floor, which would shut the rink down for a while. One of the
Chorale Tour ’08 By Lauren Thompson
The Symphonic Chorale waved goodbye to Giles
County on April 9 th at about 10 pm as they left on their
annual spring trip. This year they traveled to New York City
to enjoy the amazing city and to compete in the “Festivals
of Music” competition. They arrived on the well known
fifth avenue at approximately nine o’clock on April 10 th .
Students had the opportunity to take the entire day to enjoy
some New York shopping and to sight see places such as St.
Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State
Building, Macy’s, and NBC studios. The Chorale checked
into their hotel in Newark, New Jersey around seven and
settled in for a restful night of sleep in preparation for their
performance early the next morning.
Chorale members ate breakfast bright and early then
boarded the bus to travel to St. Benedict’s Preparatory
School for their performance. The Chorale warmed up first
and performed around 10:30. They did an excellent job and
Chorale members before they boarded the bus for New York City
on Wednesday night.
impressed the judges with their outstanding performance of the songs “Shut de do” and “Break forth into Song”. The Chorale then
exited the stage and the members of Choral Ensemble changed and warmed up for their performance. Although they were exhausted
from their previous performance in Chorale, the Choral Ensemble did a terrific job singing “Kyrie” and “Follow the Drinking Gourd”
for the judges. Following their performances, the Chorale loaded the bus and headed back to the hotel to change for a night out on the
town.
First, they traveled to the well known China Town
to buy imitations of designer purses, sunglasses,
watches, jewelry, and pretty much anything they could
think of. Then, they enjoyed a true New York
experience: first they ate at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop,
a café style restaurant on Fifth Avenue, and then they
attended an exciting off-Broadway musical entitled
“Jump” at Union Square Theater. After an exciting
night, students were relieved to arrive back at the hotel
to catch up on some sleep.
On Saturday morning, wake-up calls came bright
and early as Chorale members got ready to attend the
“Festivals of Music” awards ceremony, which took
place in Times Square at the famous Hard Rock Café.
Members enjoyed a breakfast buffet and waited
anxiously to hear their scores the judges had given them
the previous day. As it turned out, both groups did
extremely well in the judge’s eyes. The Chorale received
a first place trophy in group-A with an excellent rating!
The Choral Ensemble also did an amazing job and received a second place trophy in group-A with a rating of good.
After the satisfying ceremony, members toured Times Square. It truly lived up to all expectations. They enjoyed stores such as the
M&M Factory, the Hershey’s store, a Virgin Mega-store, and countless McDonalds and cafes. After a few hours of Times Square,
students met at the Ambassador Theater to attend the Broadway show “Chicago”, an intriguing musical about murder and deception.
After the show, they traveled to ground zero where students had the opportunity to look at ground zero, Century 21, the church at
ground zero, and Trinity Church. Then they went to the South Side Sea Port, a pier right beside the Brooklyn Bridge, to grab some
competition in Newark, New Jersey.
Park Zoo, Belvedere Castle, Shakespeare’s Garden, and countless bridges and
tunnels. The Chorale spent most of the morning there;
afterwards they enjoyed another experience unique to New
York: they attended a New York Mets game at Shae Stadium
in Queens. Although the weather could’ve been better, many
students enjoyed their first major league baseball game. After
the game, they drove around for a few hours to see Yankee
Stadium and traveled to the South Side Pier again. Later, they
rode the Staten Island Ferry and witnessed the breathtaking
Statue of Liberty at night. It was an amazing experience for
their last night in the city.
The next morning, students woke up bright and early for
the long ride home. They boarded the bus around 8:00 and hit
the road for Virginia. They arrived home exhausted and
happy around 7:00pm after an amazing, once in a lifetime
experience.
Giles County Clean-up Day
By Lauren Thompson
The annual Giles County Clean-up Day was held on March
29 this year. About 75 GHS students from various organizations
such as the National Honor Society, the Science Club, SADD,
and students from various science classes at GHS, gathered in the
lobby around nine on a windy, cold Saturday morning. They
boarded two buses and trash pick-up day was underway. The
buses went in different directions, the first headed toward
Ripplemead. The students on board were instructed to start
picking up trash in Ripplemead and work their way back to the
high school. The second bus headed for the 460 business area
where they picked up trash along the exits and the Bluff City
Hill.
The volunteers worked at filling the orange trash bags from
9am to 12 pm. They found interesting items such as old tires, a
metal bin, a portion of a guard rail, part of an old cap gun, and
lots of glass. One group even ventured into a cave in the area
where the school board is located. At the end of the three hours,
roads throughout the 460 business area and the Ripplemead area
were spotted with groups of orange trash bags filled to the brim
with other drivers’ litter. After the group was finished, the buses
headed to the Pearisburg Community Center to enjoy a lunch of
pizza and hot dogs. The experience was rewarding for all who
participated and it resulted in cleaner Giles County roads.
Senior Ben Mullins sits on one of the
benches in the lobby at lunchtime.
The Real Ben Mullins! By Clay Bowles
Who doesn’t know Ben Mullins? You can see him in 3 rd lunch chilling with
friends, mingling with some of his fellow classmates in the hall and even playing some
basketball in the gym. But what some students may not know is that Ben only has one
functioning kidney.
When he was young, he loved to play contact sports such as basketball, football,
and baseball. As he entered the sixth grade, he got a bruise on his side from an injury
and went to the doctor. The results of the CAT scan found not internal bleeding, but
Ben and his family were informed that one of his two kidneys was the size of a peanut
(from birth), and couldn’t function.
Ben commented “When I first heard the doctor I was sad. I couldn’t play my favorite
sport, football. The reasons I couldn’t play was, if I was to get hit in the side that my
kidney is on, it could cause severe damage to my body.”
“Since I couldn’t play, I did the next best thing which was to manage the little league
football team. I was still part of the team; and went to every game and practice.”
Now a senior, Ben is making the best of his high school life. He plays Varsity Baseball, was the camera operator for the Varsity
Basketball team, an officer in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the 2008 Prom King.
Foreign Exchange:
By Jantana Ruayrinsaowarot
Summer is on its way here and I have been waiting for it as long as everyone else, but it is also a
reminder to me that my stay in the United States is almost over and it will soon be time for me to go
back to my home in Bangkok, Thailand.
This past year I have been an exchange student here at GHS in Pearisburg, Virginia. It has been
the fastest year of my life. I have learned so many things and grown up in so many ways, all of which I
couldn’t have done without the help of my host family, my teachers, and my friends.
When I first arrived I faced a major “culture shock.” Everything here is different than where I
came from i.e. language, food, climate, the landscapes, and the school system. People talk differently
and act differently. But I always keep in my mind a phrase that my father said to me before I left the
airport, “Even though everything might seem to be different, the attitude and the respect people expect
from you will still be the same.” I’ve tried my best to give everyone I have met a good impression and
everything I do my best effort because I know that I am not just representing myself, but my family,
school, and country as well!
Samantha Owens was overtaken with
excitement and disbelief when she was
announced winner of the Miss GHS pageant.
Miss GHS 2008
products and a cash prize of $100. I asked Miss GHS a few questions about her
experience; she told me that she and her friends only competed to support prom and she
had no idea that she would ever win. She said her goal as Miss GHS is to get stereotyped
students to be more involved. She said that being involved in things such as the drama
program can make shy students more outgoing. Her favorite moment of the entire
experience was when her escort made her laugh on stage, and it made everyone laugh
backstage. I asked her if she could give any advice to future contestants. She said, “Just
go for it and don’t think that you can’t win because of age, popularity, or anything else.
She says, “Just have fun and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.”
Last year Giles High School brought back the tradition of the Miss GHS
pageant that had not been held for several years and the event turned into a
success. This year sponsors Babette Martin, Tiffany Matlock, and Erin Burton got
together to organize the event yet again and make it even better than last years.
This year’s competition featured much entertainment including the Giles Country
Dance Academy Competition Teams, the Giles County Storm All-Star
Cheerleaders, and a performance by Giles High School’s own Dewayne
“Dwelvis” Sanders. The competition showcased 22 contestants competing for this
year’s crown. The girls were each given an interview prior to the actual
competition which went towards fifty percent of their overall score. The other
fifty percent is divided into two twenty-five percent categories based on their
casual and evening wear that they modeled during the competition. After a night
of excitement it all came down to five finalists. The five finalists were Kristen
Lucas, Astleigh Hobbs, Samantha
Owens, Amber Lee, and Elizabeth
Loveday. After the five finalists were
chosen they were all asked a question
that they had previously been asked
during their interview. After all the
questions had been asked, the judges
went to tally up the scores and came
back with the three winners. In the
end Samantha Owens was crowned
Miss GHS 2008 by last year’s
winner, Katy Allamong. She was also
awarded with several cosmetic
have missed school or are checking
out early. Photo by Lindsay R. Honosky
Absentees
By Lindsay R. Honosky
The absentee system is something we’re all familiar with. You bring a note from home
and/or the doctor to the teacher responsible for your grade level, they sign a little slip of
paper, and then you are responsible for having that slip signed throughout the day. A waste
of time? To some, but to others, it is a helpful reminder to get your assignments, or to get a
little extra help from the teacher if you’ve missed a day or two or six. A downside,
however, is that they’re very hard to remember; most of the time these little slips end up as
soggy bits of paper in the next wash.
Another part of the system is the check out early slips and the check in late slips. These
apply basically to the same system, however, instead of getting all your teachers’
signatures, you are only required the names of the teachers whose classes you will miss or
have missed. These slips can be obtained either in the morning along with the absentee
slips, the bookstore, or the main office. You either turn these into the office or let a teacher
turn it in for you, the same as your absentees.
These little pieces of paper may be an annoyance, but they really are for a good purpose. The absentees, check-in, and check-out
slips are a helpful reminder to get your assignments and check in with the teacher, and it also helps the staff keep track of where you
are, in case of emergency or other reasons. So the next time you think, “Oh, why do I have to bother with this?” Just remember that
little rectangle could be the difference between an passing grade and a failing grade.
What’s Important in a President?
This year’s campaign for the presidency seems to be very controversial; everyone
seems to have varying opinions on what issues matter most and which candidate is best for
our country. So, I decided to conduct a survey to see what is most important in our future
president to the students of GHS. I surveyed about fifty people and here are the results:
1. Do you pay attention to the presidential campaigns?
What is I.S.S? By Clay Bowles
ISS or, In School Suspension, is a disciplinary program that students are assigned for five
ore more demerits throughout the school year. When a student is assigned ISS, they are instructed
to be quiet, do all assigned work their teacher designated, and must be working at all times. If the
teacher has assigned no work for the day, the ISS monitor has the right to assign work for the
student; and absolutely no day dreaming or sleeping is allowed. If any rules are broken, further
actions like more days or OSS can be discussed amongst the school administrators. Through the
day, the students are allowed two bathroom breaks; one in the A.M. class periods and the second
in the P.M. periods. The time the students eat lunch is assigned by the school administrators, they
also assign when the bathroom breaks are taken.
ISS monitor Steve Wilson
Tips to Avoid ISS!
1. Listen to all teachers and respect them.
2. Do not speak to the lunch detention students or the
current ISS students.
3. Dress out each and every day in gym class.
4. No cursing of any kind.
5. No fighting.
6. No bullying.
7. Do not bring any alcohol, tobacco or paraphernalia
to school.
8. Do not bring any weapons of any type to school.
9. Do not steal any lunchroom food.
10. Follow the dress code.
two candidates running for the Democratic
Nomination.
Vote of the Century
By Lindsay R. Honosky
The 2008 presidential campaign has been one for the history books; it’s the
first election where a woman or an African American could become the
Democratic presidential candidate. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack
Obama are in a neck-and-neck race for their party’s support, along with
Independent and Republican votes in the presidential primaries. There have
been many primaries throughout the year, all of which showing support for
both candidates; however, Barack Obama has more of the Democratic
delegate’s votes. The race has become so close that the candidates even
campaigned in Guam (a territory near Vietnam owned by the United States)
desperate for those extra votes.
Hillary Clinton has been in
politics for a good portion of
her life. Being the wife of expresident
Bill Clinton, she
knows her way around the White House. She announced her run for the candidacy on
her website, saying “I’m in, and I’m in to win.” However, she is currently behind her
opponent, Barack Obama, by 164 delegate votes.
The other candidate, Barack Obama, is in the lead for the Democratic Nomination.
He’s not as experienced in politics as Senator Clinton; however, his message has
moved thousands, every word promising hope and change. There has been endless
controversy over his religious beliefs, his background, and who supports him, but it has
done nothing to diminish his following. He has won most of the Presidential Primaries
yet his opponent stays in the race for the hope to win over the nation in the last run
before the convention.
Senator Clinton won the previous primary in West Virginia, winning by a 67%
lead. The next primary is being held in Kentucky, with six Electoral Votes up for
grabs. Both candidates seem determined to stick it out until they reach the convention,
then one of them will be deemed the next one to have a shot at the presidency.
Barack Obama is the highly popular
candidate in the Democratic race,
winning most of the primaries and
earning the majority of the Electoral
Votes.
Comical Opinions
By Lindsay R. Honosky
You’ve seen shows like the Colbert Report and the Daily Show on late
night television for years, but how much impact do you think they have as a
whole. It’s amazing how influential these seemingly simple comedy spin-offs
can be on a watching public. They have created presidential candidates,
influenced public opinion, and promote certain authors and artists of a certain
view. But is this a good thing?
Sometimes people forget that these shows are merely that; shows put on for
our amusement. Some people lose track of the fact that, while most jokes are
based on actual news, it is still just a comedy show, which means that facts can
be bent and twisted to support a certain view. Depending on your political
outlook, you could say that these comedy shows sometimes tell more of the
truth than the actual news broadcasts, yet most are based on them. However,
certain comedy shows could be the
difference between unfair and fair
treatment for a political figure or a
celebrity. As an example, Senator Hillary
Clinton had claimed earlier this year that
the media coverage of her was unfair, that
certain news media were highlighting Senator Obama and not giving fair coverage. The normal
stations, such as MSNBC, played it off as “a cry for attention”, however, Saturday Night Live
created a skit parodying the last debate between the two senators, poking fun at how viciously
the moderators attacked Senator Clinton and pampered Senator Obama. Though funny, through
the next few weeks Hillary supporters began to complain about the unfair treatment, and media
broadcasts started to level out their coverage of the candidates.
A very famous face that has rapidly risen to the top is that of Stephen Colbert. The man
has claimed to have created one presidential nominee, promoted fundraisers for schools and
other programs, and has even ran for president himself. He is a very influential character of the
late night show list, however, he is just that; a character. People often debate on whether or not
his show is entirely based on sarcasm, of if he actually supports such ideas. Some people know
that it is just a show and should not be taken so seriously, yet there are always a few people who
take these types of programs as fact, without doing their own homework to see if the joke can be
backed up by actual information.
Comedy is a great conveyor of information; however it is a double-edged sword. On
one side, it gets the masses’ attention and gets them concerned about the issues. On the other
hand, it also makes people jump to the gun quicker, since they can’t seem to find the time to
research the information before they act. The next time you watch one of those shows,
remember this; laugh, learn, but keep your own thoughts. Comical opinions are meant for the
big screen, not for the big picture.
Stephen Colbert, host of the
Colbert Report, has grown
vastly in the past year in
popularity. With a best selling
book and popular late night TV
show, Mr. Colbert has become
a famous and influential face.
Bravo TV By R. Tanner Bivens
MTV, Comedy Central, Spike TV, and BET are
just a few examples of stations that teenagers love to
watch. For the more refined viewer, you might find
Bravo TV a better option. Bravo is a television
station that bases its TV shows on pop culture, fine
dining, and high fashion. Some famous shows from Bravo are Project Runway,
Top Chef, Shear Genius, Working Out, Flipping Out, The Real Housewives of
Orange County, The Real Housewives of New York, and Top Design.
Shows like The Real Housewives of Orange County and The Real Housewives
of New York are based off of the TV series Desperate Housewives and delve into
the lives of real housewives in America. Reality shows such as Project Runway,
bring in contestants to discover the next big fashion designer, Top Chef shows
Americas most talented Chefs competing against each other, and Shear Genius is
about hair styling.
With the great shows that Bravo TV delivers, it is almost an impossibility to
turn on the TV and find something not entertaining. I encourage everyone to turn
on Bravo TV the next time they are surfing the channels.
Kess Luyendijk: The very first band
competition of my 8 th grade year. I forgot
my bass drum mallets. Talk about not
being well equipped when you’re about to
bang…the drum.
Shane Bailey: Everyday.
Billy Cook: When Astleigh tried ripping
my shirt off of me all the time in school.
“Stop it” HAHA.
Kayla Harless: When I broke my nose
during a summer softball league.
Danielle Wilson: All the times I tripped
up the stairs.
Ryan Frazier: Falling down the steps on
the 1 st day of school in the 8 th grade.
Betsy Blevins: There have been a lot! I
usually just laugh about them, but one
thing that was embarrassing was when I
was in 8 th grade. I was walking by myself
up the bleachers and fell up them…not
down them and busted my knee badly.
What’s worse is that it was in front of a
bunch of seniors who laughed and made
fun of me. The worst part was how bad it
hurt.
Katy Allamong: I was wearing my black
dress one day, not realizing it was so
windy. As I was unlocking my car, a huge
gust of wind caused a Marilyn Monroe
moment. Needless to say, I watch the
weather before getting dressed now
Paige Kauffelt: Last
year’s pep rally when the
cheerleaders thought it
would be a great idea to
yell in front of the entire
student body “CHEERLEADERS
KICK….” And we smacked our butts. It
was horrible.
Dewayne Sanders: Falling in the parking
lot.
Duston Rakes: Knowing nothing but
smoke on the water on the guitar and
thinking I was the master for knowing
that!!!
Kristen Hamblin: My first day of 8 th
grade I tripped and fell on my face in front
of the gym during lunch.
Emily Heim: When I kicked
over a row of chairs in front of a
group of important men and
women who were evaluating the
governor’s school.
Chris Carpenter: When Astleigh and
Danielle were jerks and knocked my
English binder out of my hands and all
5,000 papers flew everywhere. It blocked
the whole hall way.
Venessa Burnette: Getting sick in front
of the entire crowd at the district
track meet after running the 400m.
Ethan McGuire: Falling down in
the high school parking lot.
Justin Dirico: In the 8 th grade the button
on my pants fell off and I had to hold my
pants up the rest of the day.
Lauren Shied: Passing out in the stands
at the state game.
Lindsay Honosky: Dating a certain
someone……
Bryan Stafford: I guess the few times I
screwed up sound effects for drama
Megan Davis: When a water bottle busted
in my purse and leaked water from Mr.
Reeds room to the locker room.
Stephanie Dolinger: Mrs. McMahan
getting mad at me for calling her Mrs.
Tilley.
Amber Caldwell: THE YUMMY
GORGEOUS pizza incident… enough
said…haha
Mark Amos: Getting hit in the head with
a rock. I was in gym class my 9 th grade
year. I was bleeding for 20 minutes but it
was just a little scratch, your head just
bleeds a lot.
Jamie Suroski: Falling down the steps
during a fire drill.
Grace Meier: I got a
mysterious package sent to
me from some company
that included some samples
of feminine supplies;
needless to say it was
embarrassing opening it up in
class. Still have not found out
why it was sent to me.
Andrew Gusler: When
Sheldon Douthat ruined
Region C championship
Ben Mullins: Sliding down
the hall way on my stomach
for 5 dollars. 1 Gallon of
Milk + Vomit = Milk
Challenge.
Bray Cartwright: One of
the few times I fell going up
the steps.
Ryan Davis: I haven’t really
had any major embarrassing
moments. Although I am sure
right after I write this I’ll
walk outside and become the
victim of
something
humiliating.
Stephanie Robertson:
When I ripped two pairs of
jeans playing volleyball
during lunch in one week.
Josh Radar: Falling up the
stairs twice at the same time.
Joey Stevers: When I fell
down at a football game.
Kent Robertson: Not
catching a basketball and it
hitting me in the face in
warm ups.
Brooke Johnson: At one
of the football pep rallies,
the cheerleaders all huddled
in the middle of the gym and
chanted, “What time is it?”
“GAME TIME!” we then all
yelled “Cheerleaders kick”.
and smacked our butts. The
entire crowd was
ridiculously silent!
Who Supports their Team?
By Clay Bowles
With so many different clothing styles now-a-days, it can be a hard
choice to pick exactly what to wear. For some students, it is an easy choice
one or two days out of the week. They pick to wear their team’s jersey.
expanding from the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, FIFA, NCAAF, NCAAB,
NHL, UEFA, or they could choose to wear their own high school jersey.
Students have a wide variety of jerseys to choose from. If the student has a
favorite player, then they may choose to just wear their favorite player’s
jersey instead of their favorite team’s. Professional jerseys like Jeremy
Shockey, Hernan Crespo, Marshall Faulk, Alessandro Nesta and
others can be seen through the halls of GHS.
So, if one day you feel like supporting your team, wear your jersey,
and wear it with pride.
Summer Fun Checklist!
By Andrea Neice
Many teens find themselves wondering about what they are going to do this summer and most never find anything to do in Giles
County. For many it is because they do not want to take the time to look for something to do even if it is right there in front of them.
Making a list of things to do before the summer starts is a great way to keep from getting lazy. Summer should be about having a fun
time and making a good use of your time. The list below is an example of things you can do in the summer but feel free to make your
own. All you do is check the boxes off to the side as you do each thing. Never give up and set your goals high!
Splash around in a plastic kiddy pool.
Take your dog for a walk.
Make some tasty treats on your own such as a root beer float or popsicles.
Plant flowers in your yard.
Make a mixed CD of your favorite songs and title it “The soundtrack of my
life.”
Buy some crayons and a coloring book.
Get a job or an internship.
Run around in the sprinklers.
Jump in the pool with all of your clothes on.
Invite friends over and have a tea party.
Swing on the swings at the park.
Tie-Dye a t-shirt or bed sheets with Kool-Aid!
Put on the radio and dance.
Go camping in your backyard!
Have a bonfire and roast marshmallows.
Go fishing in the river.
Have a scavenger hunt.
Hike up to the Cascades.
From Ragsdale to Williams
Passing down a Legacy
By Bryan Stafford
For 30 years the Spartan football team has been lead by Coach Steve
Ragsdale a man who is as iconic as the team mascot itself around Giles High
School. Every Friday evening on game night you can see Coach Ragsdale in
his trademark red jacket leading his team to victory. He’s always on the
sideline helping out his players and coaching them to the best of their ability.
Next year however things are going to be a bit different on Friday nights.
There will still be football, excitement, and the Spartan football team, but the
head coach position is going to be filled by someone else. Coach Ragsdale has
finally decided it’s time to hang up his jacket and pass down his coaching
legacy. Coach Jeff Williams was asked by Principal Greg Brown and Coach
Ragsdale if he would be interested in the position and he said yes. I asked
Coach Williams a few questions about this change and this is what he had to
say. He said that he was both
nervous and excited about the new
Coach Williams will be leading the
Spartan football team next year as
head coach. Photo by Bryan Stafford.
In closing Coach Williams would like
to thank Mr. Brown and the entire GHS
staff for having faith in him to be the next
head coach. He says he appreciates the
support and he’s looking forward to the
upcoming season. He says it will be sad
without Coach Ragsdale as well as Coach
Kelley and Coach Ellison who are also
retiring. Coach
Ragsdale will be
missed but I wish
the best of luck
to Coach
Williams as he
leads the
bandanna
express through
next year’s
football season.
victory for 30 years.
experience. He spoke about discomfort in new challenges that will fade over time and even
gave a piece of advice for seniors saying that, if you are nervous about what the future
holds, to not panic. I also asked about his expectations for next year’s team and how losing
so many seniors would affect the ability of the team. He told me that only 13 players are
returning from last year’s roster meaning that next year’s team will be young. He says,
“There is a lot of potential in our underclassmen and players coming up from last year’s
Junior Varsity team.” As far as expectations, he does expect the team to be successful, if
they make sacrifices such as working hard at everything, having a great attitude, and being
the best you can be.
When asked about how he feels to be the man replacing Coach Ragsdale he said, “You
can never replace or follow in the footsteps of great coach like Coach Ragsdale. It is an
honor to take over his head coaching position, but to follow in his footsteps is something
that can’t be emulated. I am honored to have coached with him, played for him, and now
taking over for him. If Coach Ragsdale ever wanted to return, I would gladly step down.” I
asked if he would continue to coach under the single-wing tradition and this is what he said,
“Giles High School, Spartan Football, and the Single-Wing Offense are synonymous with
each other.” He says that it’s part of our school culture and gives our school an identity of
its own throughout the state and parts of the country. Coach Williams said that he loves this
type of offense and next to Coach Ragsdale, it is one of the main reasons for the football
program’s success over the last 30 years. He said there would be no changes in the program
and that he just wants to build on the foundation Coach Ragsdale has established.
Happy Earth Day
By Gelsina Ceritano
People around the world celebrated Earth day this year on Tuesday, April
22 nd . This holiday was established in the 1970’s to raise awareness of the
environment and has been blooming ever since. In 1969 a part of the Cuyahoga
River in Cleveland caught fire because of industrial waste; the same year, an oil
explosion on the coast of Santa Barbara spilled over 200,000 gallons of oil into
the ocean. At this point, society demanded something had to be done. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson came
up with the Earth day event. Over 20 million Americans took action in environmental rallies and many
activities dealing with saving nature.
• Small tips that make a big difference:
• Recycle your soda cans and buy recycled paper for your school notebooks.
• Hang your clothes out to dry
• Car pool, ride the bus, or skate to your destination.
• Turn off and unplug any electronics you aren’t using in your house.
• Use cold water to wash your clothes
• Change all your bulbs to energy saving by using Compact Fluorescent light bulbs
• Pay your bills online (saves trees and fuel consumption by trucks and planes)
• Save AC in your car and house… open a window!
• Switch your shopping bags to canvas or cloth (every year more than 500 billion plastic bags are used and less than 3% are
recycled) and replace paper napkins with cloth napkins.
• Shut off your computer when you are not using it.
• Wear green eye makeup! Cargo Cosmetics invented “PlantLove”, a botanical lipstick packaged in a 100% biodegradable tube
made of polylactic acid—a corn-based renewable resource. When the tube is empty, plant it in the ground, and it sprouts
flowers
• Use both sides of your paper when doing homework or class work.
• Buy Organic Cotton clothes or Hemp.
• Replace paper napkins with cloth napkins
• Shop at Goodwill! Save a tree… buy used furniture.
Top Ten Summer Hangout Spots
By Gelsina Ceritano
Spring has sprung around Giles County and more and more
teens are spending time outside. We are constantly asking each other what we can do to occupy
ourselves. It is hard to find places around such a small town that can reach our standards of “fun.”
Most students look past our county and the beauty it holds, but not only are we blessed with
Angel’s Rest and the Cascades, but there are also tons of hidden caves and cliffs around Giles and
Pembroke. Almost Every Friday the Courthouse Café
(located across from the Courthouse in Giles County)
offers delicious coffee and food along with live bands for
students. Stretch your limits this summer and shoot your
goals for new surroundings and experiences. The
following are a few suggestions:
1. Nearby pools- Get a group of friends together and relax
at the pool
2. The Slab/ King Johnston Community Center- Grab a
basketball or softball and stay active!
3. Friend’s house- Plan a movie night with your closest friends on a rainy night.
The 2 mile trail leading up to
the 69 foot Cascades
waterfall in Pembroke.
Photo from gilescounty.org
4. The River- Sign up to Canoe the New River.
5. Jefferson National Forest- Pick a nice, warm night and set up some tents for a night of camping.
6. The Cascades- Pack a picnic, take a camera, and head up to the waterfalls!
7. Wellness Center- A clean workout environment to get in shape for summer!
8. The Blue Hole (Big Stony) - Private swimming hole.
9. Your house- Plan a water balloon fight or cookout.
10. The duck pond- Enjoy the view and bring bread for the ducks.
How Much Can You Take?
By Kelsey Frazier
Many students try and juggle the life of a teen. Constantly trying to find time for
your friends, school and work and can be a difficult struggle. Statistics prove that
students who have jobs often have to study harder to make the grades. Fifty percent of
Giles High School students have jobs, most of them being seniors. Having a lot on your
mind as a senior can stress you out. So, I talked with Shelly Bogess and I asked her what
she thought about seniors trying to do so much, and she said, “I believe that students
know their stress levels and can decide whether its high enough to work and play sports
with school I do however think it does give them a better feel for real life and what the
world has to offer.” For example, Danielle Bandy goes to school every morning, then to
soft ball practice, and
ends her night at Hill
Top where she works
till ten. Kayla Harless
attends school then also
softball. She travels to
New River to work at
pleased with how the team has progressed week to week. The
team has made a significant jump from last years with no
outstanding season. With a
and districts 6-2 they looked
for a promising season.
Trying to overcome the loss
was their hardest task.
Forcing the boys to play
Girls Varsity
Soccer
By Bryan Stafford
The 2008 girls Varsity
Soccer team put forth an
outstanding effort this season
even though they suffered many
losses. The team was led by
Coach Neil Schmidt. I asked
Coach Schmidt about his team
this year and he said that the
girls have been showing
improvement and have become
more competitive with teams in
our district. The girls have
surpassed previous year’s
records and have shown greater
improvement than teams that started their soccer programs about the same time Giles did. All of
the girls wins have been against these teams. He says the improvement comes from great attitudes
and the willingness to work hard. Showing heart, the lady Spartans took on the state champion
Bobcats and held them to six goals in the first half and zero in the second half. The girls had a
wonderful and fun season and many of the girls were awarded all district honors. Junior Kelsey
Frazier and senior Grace Meier were awarded 1 st team all district and Astleigh Hobbs, Cassie
Martin, Ciara Meredith, and Jenna Warthen were all awarded 2 nd team all district and Kayla
Stump received an honorable mention.
Girls Varsity Softball
2008
By Andrea Neice
GHS’s Lady Spartan Varsity
Softball team is coached by Steve
Wilson; his assistants are Bobby
Buchanon and Ralph Harless. The
players that have hit two home runs
this season are Lindsay Meredith
and Danielle Bandy. Danielle
Raymond hit one. Shanda
Higginbotham and Rachel Smith
combined for a no-hitter against
Narrows in one of the games this
season. The lady’s started off their season with a
win against Christiansburg in March this year.
Unfortunately, following that game they had to
face two losses against Craig Co. After having to go through both of those losses, they
came out with their heads up high and ended up with three straight wins against Galax,
Fort Chiswell, and Narrows. There was no stopping these girls from keeping the season
interesting and that’s exactly what they did. They had one loss after the three wins
against Christiansburg, the team that they beat at the beginning of the season. The girls
Varsity Boys’ Baseball
By Abby Johnson
Pitcher Zack Atkins gets ready to pitch to an East
Mont player.
The varsity baseball team started their season in February just like
all the other spring sports. To begin practice, the team stretches and runs
around the baseball field. The pitchers run poles (sprinting back and
forth across the field) because they use their muscles to an excess
amount so running helps take out the soreness. Then the team does a
round of inn field, bat, and go through practice situations. These
situations are set up like something that would happen in a real game
and the team works on how they would handle it. The hard work during
practices pays off when it comes to games. The boys have won districts
games against Floyd, Eastern Montgomery, Radford, and Auburn and
some games were very close but they came out with a loss. The team
also won several non-district games against Craig and Galax and tied
once against Pulaski. Jordan Cole won three games pitching while Zach
Atkins and Gavin Lee won two games. Zach also leads the team with
four home runs and 19 runs batted in. The overall record of the regular
season for the baseball team was 10-9-1. Many of the talented players
received special awards in the district: Zach Atkins and Gavin Lee made
first team, Billy Cook, Jordan Cole, and Wes Conley made second team,
and Michael Atkins and Joey Stevers made honorable mention. The
team won the first round in district play 6-1 against the Auburn Eagles.
“Zach Atkins crushed a two run homer in the first inning and the
Spartans never looked back Wes Conley added an RBI single and Joey
Stevers delivered a sacrifice fly to give Giles a 5-0 lead by the 3rd inning.
Michael Atkins had 2 hits for the Spartans and Billy Cook
laced a run scoring hit in the 4th to give Zach all the run
support he would need. Zach pitched 6 strong innings
striking out 9 and allowing only 2 hits.” If the team wins
the game against Glenvar on Friday May 23, the boys will
be district champions! If they lose, they will still continue
to regions.
Girl’s Varsity Tennis
By Abby Johnson
The girl’s varsity tennis team “bounced” into a new season with
fifteen players. Coach Curt Gervich along with his wife is what really
makes the team do their best. There were four seniors on the team: Lauren
Scheid, Danielle Wilson, Olivia Simmons, and Kristen Lucas. The team
captains were Lauren and Danielle who have played on the team for
several years. The captains motivate the team to give the most they have
even at practice. Practices consist of a variety of exciting ways to run and
warm up before playing. The girls stretch, run laps, sprint, and even play
ultimate Frisbee to begin practice. Once the running is out of the way, the
team drills their forehands, backhands, serves, net play, and how to be
consistent. The team was ready for their matches. Although the matches
can be extremely long, the girls try to bring healthy snacks to keep them
going throughout the event. The schools the team played were Pulaski,
Fort Chiswell, Christiansburg, Bland, Narrows, George Wythe, Floyd,
Eastern Montgomery, Glenvar, and Radford. The players came out with
wins over Narrows, Bland,
and East Mont. Even if not
all the matches were won,
individuals often won
singles matches and
doubles. District play was ready to begin and they were held at East Mont. Number
one singles was played by Lauren Scheid. She won her first game against East Mont
and then lost to Radford, who was seeded first in the district. The next day doubles
were played with
Seniors Lauren Scheid and Danielle Wilson, Coach Gervich,
and Junior Abby Johnson after district doubles day at Eastern
Montgomery.
Lauren Scheid
and Abby
Johnson. The
girl’s tried hard
and had some
great strokes but
came out with a
loss against East
Mont. The
season was over
and Captain Danielle Wilson
said something special about
the team, “It was an enjoyable
season in which there were
We had lots of new players that gave our team depth that we
didn’t have in previous years, as well as quite a few returning
