Happy Earth Day<br />

People around <strong>the</strong> world celebrated Earth day this year on Tuesday, April<br />
22 nd . This holiday was established in <strong>the</strong> 1970’s to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
environment and has been blooming ever since. In 1969 a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cuyahoga<br />
River in Cleveland caught fire because <strong>of</strong> industrial waste; <strong>the</strong> same year, an oil<br />
explosion on <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong> Santa Barbara spilled over 200,000 gallons <strong>of</strong> oil into<br />
<strong>the</strong> ocean. At this point, society demanded something had to be done. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson came<br />
up with <strong>the</strong> Earth day event. Over 20 million Americans took action in environmental rallies and many<br />
activities dealing with saving nature.<br />
• Small tips that make a big difference:<br />
• Recycle your soda cans and buy recycled paper for your school notebooks.<br />
• Hang your clo<strong>the</strong>s out to dry<br />
• Car pool, ride <strong>the</strong> bus, or skate to your destination.<br />
• Turn <strong>of</strong>f and unplug any electronics you aren’t using in your house.<br />
• Use cold water to wash your clo<strong>the</strong>s<br />
• Change all your bulbs to energy saving by using Compact Fluorescent light bulbs<br />
• Pay your bills online (saves trees and fuel consumption by trucks and planes)<br />
• Save AC in your car and house… open a window!<br />
• Switch your shopping bags to canvas or cloth (every year more than 500 billion plastic bags are used and less than 3% are<br />
recycled) and replace paper napkins with cloth napkins.<br />
• Shut <strong>of</strong>f your computer when you are not using it.<br />
• Wear green eye makeup! Cargo Cosmetics invented “PlantLove”, a botanical lipstick packaged in a 100% biodegradable tube<br />
made <strong>of</strong> polylactic acid—a corn-based renewable resource. When <strong>the</strong> tube is empty, plant it in <strong>the</strong> ground, and it sprouts<br />
flowers<br />
• Use both sides <strong>of</strong> your paper when doing homework or class work.<br />
• Buy Organic Cotton clo<strong>the</strong>s or Hemp.<br />
• Replace paper napkins with cloth napkins<br />
• Shop at Goodwill! Save a tree… buy used furniture.<br />
