Samantha Owens was overtaken with
excitement and disbelief when she was
announced winner of the Miss GHS pageant.

products and a cash prize of $100. I asked Miss GHS a few questions about her
experience; she told me that she and her friends only competed to support prom and she
had no idea that she would ever win. She said her goal as Miss GHS is to get stereotyped
students to be more involved. She said that being involved in things such as the drama
program can make shy students more outgoing. Her favorite moment of the entire
experience was when her escort made her laugh on stage, and it made everyone laugh
backstage. I asked her if she could give any advice to future contestants. She said, “Just
go for it and don’t think that you can’t win because of age, popularity, or anything else.
She says, “Just have fun and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.”

Last year Giles High School brought back the tradition of the Miss GHS
pageant that had not been held for several years and the event turned into a
success. This year sponsors Babette Martin, Tiffany Matlock, and Erin Burton got
together to organize the event yet again and make it even better than last years.
This year’s competition featured much entertainment including the Giles Country
Dance Academy Competition Teams, the Giles County Storm All-Star
Cheerleaders, and a performance by Giles High School’s own Dewayne
“Dwelvis” Sanders. The competition showcased 22 contestants competing for this
year’s crown. The girls were each given an interview prior to the actual
competition which went towards fifty percent of their overall score. The other
fifty percent is divided into two twenty-five percent categories based on their
casual and evening wear that they modeled during the competition. After a night
of excitement it all came down to five finalists. The five finalists were Kristen
Lucas, Astleigh Hobbs, Samantha
Owens, Amber Lee, and Elizabeth
Loveday. After the five finalists were
chosen they were all asked a question
that they had previously been asked
during their interview. After all the
questions had been asked, the judges
went to tally up the scores and came
back with the three winners. In the
end Samantha Owens was crowned
Miss GHS 2008 by last year’s
winner, Katy Allamong. She was also
awarded with several cosmetic

1 st runner up Astleigh Hobbs were
presented with gift packages.

Absentees

The absentee system is something we’re all familiar with. You bring a note from home
and/or the doctor to the teacher responsible for your grade level, they sign a little slip of
paper, and then you are responsible for having that slip signed throughout the day. A waste
of time? To some, but to others, it is a helpful reminder to get your assignments, or to get a
little extra help from the teacher if you’ve missed a day or two or six. A downside,
however, is that they’re very hard to remember; most of the time these little slips end up as
soggy bits of paper in the next wash.
Another part of the system is the check out early slips and the check in late slips. These
apply basically to the same system, however, instead of getting all your teachers’
signatures, you are only required the names of the teachers whose classes you will miss or
have missed. These slips can be obtained either in the morning along with the absentee
slips, the bookstore, or the main office. You either turn these into the office or let a teacher
turn it in for you, the same as your absentees.
These little pieces of paper may be an annoyance, but they really are for a good purpose. The absentees, check-in, and check-out
slips are a helpful reminder to get your assignments and check in with the teacher, and it also helps the staff keep track of where you
are, in case of emergency or other reasons. So the next time you think, “Oh, why do I have to bother with this?” Just remember that
little rectangle could be the difference between an passing grade and a failing grade.
