Girls Varsity Soccer By Bryan Stafford The 2008 girls Varsity Soccer team put forth an outstanding effort this season even though they suffered many losses. The team was led by Coach Neil Schmidt. I asked Coach Schmidt about his team this year and he said that the girls have been showing improvement and have become more competitive with teams in our district. The girls have surpassed previous year’s records and have shown greater improvement than teams that started their soccer programs about the same time Giles did. All of the girls wins have been against these teams. He says the improvement comes from great attitudes and the willingness to work hard. Showing heart, the lady Spartans took on the state champion Bobcats and held them to six goals in the first half and zero in the second half. The girls had a wonderful and fun season and many of the girls were awarded all district honors. Junior Kelsey Frazier and senior Grace Meier were awarded 1 st team all district and Astleigh Hobbs, Cassie Martin, Ciara Meredith, and Jenna Warthen were all awarded 2 nd team all district and Kayla Stump received an honorable mention. The players that have hit two home runs this season are Lindsay Meredith and Danielle Bandy. Danielle Raymond hit one. Shanda Higginbotham and Rachel Smith combined for a no-hitter against Narrows in one of the games this season. The lady’s started off their season with a win against Christiansburg in March this year. Unfortunately, following that game they had to face two losses against Craig Co. After having to go through both of those losses, they came out with their heads up high and ended up with three straight wins against Galax, Fort Chiswell, and Narrows. There was no stopping these girls from keeping the season interesting and that’s exactly what they did. They had one loss after the three wins against Christiansburg, the team that they beat at the beginning of the season. Soon they faced two losses against Glenvar and Floyd but still remained to keep on winning against Eastern Montgomery, Radford, Narrows, and Fort Chiswell. The next three losses were hard to handle but they are still working hard in practices to keep winning and they showed that they could do that with their next game Lindsay Meredith gets ready to make contact with the softball.
