Chorale Tour ’08 By Lauren Thompson The Symphonic Chorale waved goodbye to Giles County on April 9 th at about 10 pm as they left on their annual spring trip. This year they traveled to New York City to enjoy the amazing city and to compete in the “Festivals of Music” competition. They arrived on the well known fifth avenue at approximately nine o’clock on April 10 th . Students had the opportunity to take the entire day to enjoy some New York shopping and to sight see places such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, Macy’s, and NBC studios. The Chorale checked into their hotel in Newark, New Jersey around seven and settled in for a restful night of sleep in preparation for their performance early the next morning. Chorale members ate breakfast bright and early then boarded the bus to travel to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School for their performance. The Chorale warmed up first and performed around 10:30. They did an excellent job and Chorale members before they boarded the bus for New York City on Wednesday night. impressed the judges with their outstanding performance of the songs “Shut de do” and “Break forth into Song”. The Chorale then exited the stage and the members of Choral Ensemble changed and warmed up for their performance. Although they were exhausted from their previous performance in Chorale, the Choral Ensemble did a terrific job singing “Kyrie” and “Follow the Drinking Gourd” for the judges. Following their performances, the Chorale loaded the bus and headed back to the hotel to change for a night out on the town. Photo by Jason Mills First, they traveled to the well known China Town to buy imitations of designer purses, sunglasses, watches, jewelry, and pretty much anything they could think of. Then, they enjoyed a true New York experience: first they ate at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop, a café style restaurant on Fifth Avenue, and then they attended an exciting off-Broadway musical entitled “Jump” at Union Square Theater. After an exciting night, students were relieved to arrive back at the hotel to catch up on some sleep. On Saturday morning, wake-up calls came bright and early as Chorale members got ready to attend the “Festivals of Music” awards ceremony, which took place in Times Square at the famous Hard Rock Café. Members enjoyed a breakfast buffet and waited anxiously to hear their scores the judges had given them the previous day. As it turned out, both groups did extremely well in the judge’s eyes. The Chorale received a first place trophy in group-A with an excellent rating! The Choral Ensemble also did an amazing job and received a second place trophy in group-A with a rating of good. After the satisfying ceremony, members toured Times Square. It truly lived up to all expectations. They enjoyed stores such as the M&M Factory, the Hershey’s store, a Virgin Mega-store, and countless McDonalds and cafes. After a few hours of Times Square, students met at the Ambassador Theater to attend the Broadway show “Chicago”, an intriguing musical about murder and deception. After the show, they traveled to ground zero where students had the opportunity to look at ground zero, Century 21, the church at ground zero, and Trinity Church. Then they went to the South Side Sea Port, a pier right beside the Brooklyn Bridge, to grab some 4

On Sunday, the group traveled to central park to walk around and see a different side of the city. The Choral Ensemble at the “Festivals of Music” They had the opportunity to see places such as Strawberry Fields, Central competition in Newark, New Jersey. Park Zoo, Belvedere Castle, Shakespeare’s Garden, and countless bridges and tunnels. The Chorale spent most of the morning there; afterwards they enjoyed another experience unique to New York: they attended a New York Mets game at Shae Stadium in Queens. Although the weather could’ve been better, many students enjoyed their first major league baseball game. After the game, they drove around for a few hours to see Yankee Stadium and traveled to the South Side Pier again. Later, they rode the Staten Island Ferry and witnessed the breathtaking Statue of Liberty at night. It was an amazing experience for their last night in the city. The next morning, students woke up bright and early for the long ride home. They boarded the bus around 8:00 and hit the road for Virginia. They arrived home exhausted and happy around 7:00pm after an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. The Chorale spent Sunday morning in beautiful Central Park. 5
