Varsity Boys’ Baseball

The varsity baseball team started their season in February just like
all the other spring sports. To begin practice, the team stretches and runs
around the baseball field. The pitchers run poles (sprinting back and
forth across the field) because they use their muscles to an excess
amount so running helps take out the soreness. Then the team does a
round of inn field, bat, and go through practice situations. These
situations are set up like something that would happen in a real game
and the team works on how they would handle it. The hard work during
practices pays off when it comes to games. The boys have won districts
games against Floyd, Eastern Montgomery, Radford, and Auburn and
some games were very close but they came out with a loss. The team
also won several non-district games against Craig and Galax and tied
once against Pulaski. Jordan Cole won three games pitching while Zach
Atkins and Gavin Lee won two games. Zach also leads the team with
four home runs and 19 runs batted in. The overall record of the regular
season for the baseball team was 10-9-1. Many of the talented players
received special awards in the district: Zach Atkins and Gavin Lee made
first team, Billy Cook, Jordan Cole, and Wes Conley made second team,
and Michael Atkins and Joey Stevers made honorable mention. The
team won the first round in district play 6-1 against the Auburn Eagles.
“Zach Atkins crushed a two run homer in the first inning and the
Spartans never looked back Wes Conley added an RBI single and Joey
Stevers delivered a sacrifice fly to give Giles a 5-0 lead by the 3rd inning.
Michael Atkins had 2 hits for the Spartans and Billy Cook
laced a run scoring hit in the 4th to give Zach all the run
support he would need. Zach pitched 6 strong innings
striking out 9 and allowing only 2 hits.” If the team wins
the game against Glenvar on Friday May 23, the boys will
be district champions! If they lose, they will still continue
to regions.
