8 TH Grade Girls Alexia Burton Breannah Carr Toni Dressler Sara Givens Lyndsey Jackson Arrisa Kasay Afton Lane Paige Metro Becca Price Margee Ragsdale Kelsy Sylvester Eighth Grade Girls Track By Lauren Thompson The eighth grade girl’s team has had an awesome season. They started practicing at the end of February and haven’t stopped working since. They have done well at numerous meets and have a record of 5-4 as of April 22. Their leading scorers, followed by their point accumulation as of April 22 are: Paige Metro(54), Margee Ragsdale(29), Afton Lane(20), Toni Dressler(18), Becca Price(17), and Arissa Kasey(12). The leading scorers in each event are: Paige Metro in long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 400 meters, and 200 meters, Margee Ragsdale in 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles, Breannah Carr in 1600 and 800 meters, and Toni Dressler, Becca Price, and Margee Ragsdale in high jump. The girls finished their season by defeating five other teams and taking first place with a score of 149 points at the Three Rivers District Championship. Congratulations ladies on a terrific season! It started off early in March and didn’t end until the Three River’s District Championship on May 1 at Giles. They did well at the meet and finished in fourth place with a score of 58 points. They defeated both Shawsville and Auburn with a very large margin of 53 points. Tanner Bivens Spring has sprung and Boys tennis is finished. The GHS Boys tennis team has, under the coaching of Byron Hurley, has had a decent season with a current 7- 7 record. Even though they suffered two losses each at the hands of Glenvar (9-0 and 7-2), Radford (both times 9-0), and Christiansburg High School (both 7-2), they scored major wins against Bland (both times 8-1), Floyd (both times 9-0), and Narrows High school (7-2 and 6-3). Coach Byron Hurley is very hopeful for next year and stated that "The current group of players began at 9th graders and are mostly juniors. They have continued to improve with each year of experience." 34

Photos by Andrea Neice Varsity Track 2008 By Andrea Neice The varsity girls started off their season against Blacksburg and Narrows and came out with second place and the scores were Blacksburg – 79.5, Narrows – 0, and Giles – 71.5. The girls have worked every day in practice to get where they are now. They have come out with first pace wins against Radford, Floyd Co., Auburn, and Glenver. The scores are 4/3 Radford – 20, Floyd – 12 and Giles – 110, 4/10 Auburn – 53, Floyd Co. – 12, and Giles – 102, and on 4/17 Glenvar – 36.5, Radford – 32, and Giles – 86.5. There is also a team leader in each event, but all girls play an important part on the team. The team leaders are in shot – Rachel Lang (31-01.25), in Discus – Harmony Tripp (103-07), in Long Jump – Sasha King (16-00.5), in Triple Jump – Sasha King (33-04.5), in High Jump – Michele Martin and Paige Kauffelt (4-08), in 100 Hurdles – Brianna Caldwell (18.2), in the 100 – Sasha King (12.9), in the 1600 – Amber McKinney (6:21.06), in the 400 – Venessa Burnette (1:04.9), in the 300 Hurdles – Michele Martin (54.4), in the 800 – Amber McKinney (2:40.0), in the 200 – Sasha King (26.7), and in the 3200 Nikki Martin (16:10.0). The team is coached by Rusty Kelley. Sasha King takes a first place win at the New River Invitational. Michelle Martin takes a big leap over the high jump bar. VARSITY BOYS Max Ratcliffe finishes his race at the New River Invitational. in the 200 – Max Ratcliffe (26.8). As the season goes on, both boys and girls practice everyday to continue on with an excellent season. The boys are coached by Jeff Williams and they started their season off with second place against Blacksburg and Narrows. The rest of the seasons scores were 4/3 Giles – 31, Radford – 63, and Floyd Co. – 56, 4/10 Giles -22.5, Auburn – 86, and Floyd Co. – 50.5, and on 4/17 Giles – 36, Radford – 95, Glenvar – 44, and North Cross – 27.
