INDRAJIT BANERJEE<br />

Originally from India, Indrajit Banerjee has been<br />

Director of Knowledge Societies Division at<br />

UNESCO since 2010. He holds a doctorate in<br />

communication and didactics from the Sorbonne<br />

University and completed a post-doctorate at the<br />

Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He<br />

was Secretary-General of the Asian Media Information<br />

and Communication Centre (AMIC) from<br />

2004 to 2009. He is an expert on the social impact<br />

of information and communication technologies.<br />

He is the author or editor of more than ten books<br />

and has given presentations in more than 80 international<br />

conferences around the world. He has<br />

published articles in several international journals<br />

in the field of communications. Articles and books<br />

he has written include “The Diffusion of the Internet<br />

and Rural Development,” published in 2006,<br />

and “Rhetoric and Reality: The Internet Challenge<br />

for Democracy in Asia,” published in 2003. He<br />

was also the co-editor of the Asian Communication<br />

Handbook in 2008, with Stephan Logan.<br />

Connecting the dots: UNESCO's comprehensive<br />

study on Internet-related issues<br />

This presentation will highlight the preliminary findings<br />

of UNESCO's comprehensive study on Internetrelated<br />

issues, covering four key themes of increasing<br />

debate – access, freedom of expression, privacy and<br />

ethics. The presentation will provide insights into the<br />

views expressed by UNESCO's Member States and<br />

international experts on these issues, their implications<br />

and possible avenues of future research and debate.<br />

Cette présentation exposera les résultats préliminaires<br />

de l’étude approfondie de l’UNESCO sur les enjeux<br />

reliés à Internet, regroupés autour de quatre thèmes<br />

majeurs de plus en plus débattus : l’accès, la liberté<br />

d’expression, la vie privée et l’éthique. La présentation<br />

donnera des aperçus des points de vue exprimés par<br />

des États membres de l’UNESCO et par des experts<br />

internationaux sur ces enjeux, leurs implications et les<br />

possibles voies de recherche et de débat.<br />

Esta presentación destacará las conclusiones preliminares<br />

del estudio global de la UNESCO en temas<br />

relacionados con Internet que cubren cuatro temas<br />

clave de un creciente debate - el acceso, la libertad<br />

de expresión, la privacidad y la ética. La presentación<br />

proporciona una visión de las opiniones expresadas<br />

por los Estados Miembros de la UNESCO y expertos<br />

internacionales en estos temas, sus consecuencias y<br />

las posibles vías de investigación y debate futuro.<br />
