Ajo Elks Ladies
The paramedics and EMTs of Ajo Ambulance were introduced to their new medical director, Dr.
Roger Ottman of Tucson Medical Center, at an agency meeting on Wednesday, December 5. He
and pre-hospital coordinator Dawn Daniels, RN, discussed a variety of topics and answered many
questions. Both Ottman and Daniels said they think highly of the abilities of EMS personnel in Ajo.
Landfill danger
Editor:
On Nov. 28, my husband Don
and the Get Going Get Growing
student interns took a load of
rocks and garden debris to the Ajo
landfill. The dozer operator began
working very close to our car, and
must have run over a large container
of a liquid substance, possibly
used antifreeze. The liquid
shot out, covering the outside and
inside of our Jeep. Unfortunately,
the liquid splashed on the interns
and on Don. One intern was
splashed in the eye and mouth, requiring
an ambulance ride to the
hospital in Buckeye.
We are all very grateful to
have the Ajo landfill. However
the dumping of oil or antifreeze is
not allowed. A nail in your tire is
not the only danger at the landfill.
Everyone, be careful out there!
Rooster tastes vary
Editor:
Continuing on the subject of
noisy roosters in recent issues of
the Copper News: some people
like roosters crowing, some don’t.
Some people like loud rap music,
some don’t. Fortunately, Pima
County has ordinances in place
to protect all of us equally from
noise we didn’t ask for.
Dorothy and I were avid gardeners
and chicken owners on
24 acres until we turned 40 and
realized the time it took—and
that if we wanted a comfortable
retirement we had better get serious
about making real money. We
still applaud home gardening and
egg-laying hens, but we do object
to pea-brained roosters loudly announcing
their presence dozens
of times every night and day in a
residential area.
Greetings!
Artist John Calcott Horsley designed
the first known Christmas
greeting card and sent it to his
friend, Sir Henry Cole, a wealthy
London gentleman, in 1843.
Charles Dickens wrote A
Christmas Carol in the same year.
Sour taste
Editor:
My husband and I were going
to have a nice Thanksgiving
at the local VFW potluck dinner.
We arrived at what we thought
was 12:30 p.m. due to the time
our satellite clock read. We discovered
later it went haywire for
some reason. Anyway we were
treated coldly by the bartender/
commander stating in a very rude
and cocky tone “read the paper it
said it starts at 1 p.m.” He made us
feel very unwelcome. This is not
the first time he has treated us like
this, and I am sure he has treated
others like that also.
We may not be natural Ajo
people but we have made this our
home. We have been in better private
clubs as well as public clubs
and not once have ever been treated
or spoke to like this. We feel it
to be a sad thing, this person can
cost the club membership or visits
and support from other nationwide
members with this attitude.
I am not actually a veteran,
but my father served in WWII,
also my daughter and son-in-law
served during Desert Storm. I was
proud to be a member of this organization
but this experience has
left a sour taste in my mouth so
to speak. We also feel that when
a private club has a public event,
the members of such clubs should
make people feel welcome. To me
this Ajo club is becoming what I
call “Harper Valley PTA.” Step
back folks sweep your porches
and let’s live to learn to live with
each other.
Don’t get me wrong, people, I
do give thanks not only one day a
year, but every day for what not
only the lord has blessed me with,
but what my husband and I have
achieved together.
This was just a bad experience
for us and we were wondering if
others have ever felt this way also.
Dogs & roosters
Editor:
A dog barks when he perceives
a problem — lions, tigers, pigs,
or prowlers. I’m alerted. Should
I worry? Are my gates closed and
my doors locked? Fifteen long
loud minutes later it is apparent
the dog’s problem is personal. The
situation goes wide awake and
downhill on a timer.
The rooster crows to make an
announcement: God’s in his (the
rooster’s) heaven, all’s well with
his world. A quick reminder that
life is good.
We need fewer barking dogs
and more crowing roosters.
