Rosemary lives in Ajo. I’m
not writing about Rose Cameron,
or Rosie Manditch, or Rosalia
in Why (you should visit her
awesome rock shop someday).
Rosemary in Ajo grows as an evergreen
bush; the crushed leaves
are delightfully fragrant and make
a delicious herb for seasoning
your soups, stews, veggies, bread
and meat.
When children praise something
that their mom cooks, then
you know it’s good. And that is
what the children of Josie Robles
do. They praise their mom’s rosemary
potatoes. Josie says to cube
your potatoes (with or without the
skin) into a microwave dish, add
plenty of butter, as much salt and
garlic and rosemary as you wish,
and cook in your microwave oven
until tender. But the best way, says
Mom Josie, is to fry the potatoes
in olive oil, adding the salt, garlic
and rosemary as the potatoes
cook.
When the Christmas season
rolls around each year, the wise
person remembers rosemary.
Rosemary bushes, shaped like
Christmas trees, can be purchased
to use as your family tree, Not
only does this small tree smell
wonderful in your home, you can
clip some leaves to season your
holiday meals, and then after
Christmas take that bush outside
and plop it into your garden. Give
a special name to each year’s new
bush, like Frosty or Rudolph or
Mitt or Barack!
Twelve days
The words to the song Twelve
Days of Christmas originated in
1780 in England and were sung to
a tune that originated in France at
a much earlier time.
It has no religious significance
but is thought by some to have
been a game to help children improve
their memories.
