Ajo Copper News, December 12, 2012, Page 8 Last Saturday’s Second Saturday brought a lot of business to the Plaza with farmers’ markets, arts and crafts, music, people-watching, and Ajo-beautiful weather. DSCHC is making changes, starting new programs Desert Senita Community Health Center has some exciting changes happening, according to CEO Fran Driver. DSCHC has been re-cabling and upgrading the whole medical building in order to make sure they can bring the community the most efficient and up-to-date health care. The health center has been experiencing multiple computer issues over the last year and the new cabling should alleviate the issues. “One long-overdue change that has come out of this process is a new billing system for dental,” said Driver. “This new billing system will allow Desert Senita Dental to bill in a much timelier and efficient manner. As Desert Senita Dental finishes closing out the old computer system, some dental patients will receive older dental bills that have been slow to process. DSCHC will work with each individual to resolve their outstanding balances. She said the staff appreciates the community’s patience over the past several months while they worked through these computer issues. The newest feature now available from DSCHC is the Patient Portal. The Patient Portal allows patients of Dr. Richardson and Ben Blackburn, PA, to contact the health center through an encrypted email system any time night or day. Instead of having to call during clinic hours, this system allows a person to request medication refills or send general questions to the provider through a secure electronic option and receive an answer within two business days. DSCHC is adding a new service for the families in western Pima County. The Healthy Steps program supports families with children from birth to five years old by providing home visitation by a Healthy Steps Specialist who provides education and support to the parents of young children. The Healthy Steps Specialist will also be present for the child’s well child visits. “The Healthy Steps program is a nationally recognized, evidence based program that helps assure a child is ready for school and set for life,” said Driver. DSCHC has changed the hours of the referral specialist to Tuesday through Thursday, 8am to 7 p.m. “These new hours should make it easier for working individuals to meet with the referral specialist face-to-face,” she said. “DSCHC is sad to see Yvonne Crewse, LPC, leave after 4 ½ years,”said Driver, noting the health center is in the process of recruiting a new behavioral health professional. She announced Ben Blackburn, PA, has decided to stay at DSCHC. Driver said she has had many questions from Blackburn’s patients about who to see as a primary care provider and is pleased he has decided to stay with DSCHC for another season. She also noted that Dr. Richardson has taken a brief leave of absence and will be back sometime after the first of the year. Ajo Garden Club to hold clean up The Ajo Garden Club will clean up between mileposts 36 and 37 on Highway 85 on Tuesday, December 18. Members are asked to meet at milepost 37 to sign in and obtain vests, pickup sticks and bags at 8 a.m. Nonmembers are invited to participate in this keep-Ajo-clean-and-beautiful project. Participants will be treated to coffee and a doughnut at Roadrunner Java courtesy of AGC. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month and beautification projects are held at various locations on the third Tuesday of each month. Angelina Santos is the new English Language Learner teacher at Ajo Unified School District. She has 23 years of experience as a teacher. She achieved a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master of arts degree in education, specializing in special education. Santos says she chose to be a teacher to inspire youth to achieve their dreams, maximize their potentials, and become significant members of society. Commenting on life in Ajo she said, “Its simplicity refreshes me and its calmness energizes.” Her hobbies include reading and listening to music. She is married to Joselito Santos and their children are Angela, 15, Margarita, 13, and Raphael Jose, 11. Christopher Ian Beltran Parado is the new schoolbased speech language pathologist for the Ajo Unified School District. He previously taught as a flying lecturer in special education at the Asian Development Foundation College, as a school-based speech language pathologist in the San Francisco Bay area, and as a special education teacher for the severely to profoundly disabled students in northern Arizona. His education includes a bachelors degree in economics from the University of Santo Tomas, a certificate in teaching from Philippine Normal University, a post-graduate diploma in special education specializing in developmental delays along with a masters in communication disorders from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, and attendance at the English Language Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. “I want to contribute positive influence in the life of the students with communication disorders,” he said. “I am always excited working with the kids and their families. It is my professional goal to provide opportunities in honing their abilities so that they will become effective communicators.” He noted that the Ajo community is friendly and welcoming and he enjoys going to the park.
