1. Diaries, journals kept by officers and soldiers <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> b<strong>at</strong>tlefront. Examples:<br />

Thomas S. McCahan diary describes skirmishes, b<strong>at</strong>tles and o<strong>the</strong>r activities with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Army of <strong>the</strong> Cumberland in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.<br />

John W. Alloway 1863 diary records incidents during <strong>the</strong> Chancellorsville and<br />

Gettysburg campaigns as well as disp<strong>at</strong>ch to quell draft riots in NYC.<br />

2. Letters to and from <strong>the</strong> b<strong>at</strong>tlefront-General Meade and his wife carried out an<br />

extensive war time correspondence. Meade’s letters 1861-72 describe leadership ,<br />

plan of campaigns, str<strong>at</strong>egies for <strong>the</strong> Army of <strong>the</strong> Potomac, accounts of<br />

Gettysburg, controversies among commanding officers, and issues before <strong>the</strong><br />

American public. James Cornell Biddle letters to his wife Gertrude (nee Meredith)<br />

Report on CW oper<strong>at</strong>ions and str<strong>at</strong>egy in capture of Fort H<strong>at</strong>teras, <strong>the</strong> occup<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of New Orleans, and with Meade Chancellorsville and Gettysburg b<strong>at</strong>tles.<br />

3. Collection of regimental papers enlistment certific<strong>at</strong>es for Eastern Shore<br />

Maryland Volunteers, 2 nd Regiment, Company G; muster rolls for NY Volunteers,<br />

67 th Regiment Volunteers, 96 th and 98 th Regiments. Are o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> major<br />

ones.<br />

4. Papers of Citizen’s Bounty Fund Committee formed 1862 to encourage<br />

enlistments through payment of bounties. Includes subscriptions to <strong>the</strong> fund,<br />

correspondence on enlistments, don<strong>at</strong>ions of tents and o<strong>the</strong>r equipment, certific<strong>at</strong>es of<br />

volunteer enlists, financial records and minutes<br />

5. Prisoner of war viewpoint in journal of Cuban born Frederick Cavada in <strong>the</strong><br />

Edward Carey Gardiner Collection.<br />

6. Andrew A. Humphreys Collection ledger books, maps, books and journals.<br />

7. 52 nd Infantry Regiment Reports contain muster rolls and general order<br />
